This is a very useful thing to have as 40 reduced damage is not that good but it also dismounts your target. And you can sell it because they are not bop.

These things are extremely useful for four reasons:
1. dismounts targets
2. cheap to make
3. not bop, so you can sell them
4. does not require engineering, so you can hand them out to friends or alts.

also, in the expansion, a priest or mage can dismount in the air next to someone, hit them with one of these, then levitate or slowfall safely down while the target hits with a considerably smaller amount of safety.

This item has become one of the chief weapons in an Engineers arsenal for Air to Air combat. Coupled with the Parachute Cloak (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10518), this item allows you to turn your target into a leper gnome, dismounting them from their gryphon or wyvern, and causing them to plunge to their demise.

Get five kills and call yourself an "Ace"!

Note: Be careful about using this on Mages or Priests. If they're quick enough with Feather Fall or Levitate, they'll be waiting on the ground for you, and most likely in a bad mood.

Last I heard, the dismounting bug was fixed, and it no longer dismounts enemies.

Confirmed! You can no longer use your Discombobulator Ray to dismount foes on their flying mounts. A kick in the pants for a profession that's already down.

Wrong. This still dismounts people from their flying mount. Was flying around Halaa and a 70 rogue used this on me. Leper gnomes make a sickening crunch as they hit the ground from that high up...

As of patch 2.1 the Discombobulator Ray no longer dismounts at all. Not even fround mounts, which was the whole reason I kept them handy. I hit an orc with it today (5/24/07) and all I got was a Leper Gnome riding a Wolf. Freakin lame!! Thanks for more engineering nerfs... :( There is also a beem graphic from you to the target when you use it now.

I can announce that recently me and two friends succeeded in getting the Discombobulator Ray schematic through the D-Punchograph in Gnomeregan... on a level 15 character.

It was a hell of a job to figure out how to do it, but it all worked out in the end. My level 15 Gnome warrior was out to get the receipe for Warsong Gulch on level 19, and was gathering quest gear at the time so wanted to avoid any XP. Gnomeregan can be entered from level 15 on. Thus, I brought 2 level 70 friends who agreed to help. My main had farmed Gnomeregan for the Delta Security Card and sent it to my warrior. I ran in, one of the two friends using Arcane Explosion rank 1 to get aggro off me, then I died in the middle of the Addled Lepers outside the instance, without releasing, to be able to get access to the loot. My friends began farming for the White Punch Card with FreeForAll on. After 7 minutes a Trogg down the hall dropped it. I was rezzed by the priest friend, was able to pick up the card.

Then they cleared a path from Punchograph A to B to C to D, after which I ran this path myself upgrading the Punch Card on the way. At the D-Punchogaph, I accessed the machine and was offered hidden schematic: Discombobulator Ray.

The feeling of euphoria upon receiving the ability to crate this item at level 15 was overwhelming.

Fortunatly for the rest of us, this item is not BoP nor does it require engineering. Thus it can be made by a non twink, for twink use.

i had one sitting my my bags so i try all 5 charges on my friend and it dismounted him 3 out of the 5 charges it still works just looks like its a 60% chance which kinda sux gonna try and farm to make a few to get a better %.

donno if this makes a difference but i was on my 62 alt and my friend was 70 and red to me donno if that makes a difference i'll try using the ray when i'm on a 70 next time.

anyways will post later for better results

Strange question, since it wouldn't reduce damage significantly... but can it be used on a boss? I know Shrink ray can, but I think it'd be very amusing to suddenly be facing Gnomish Brutallus if for just a minute, but don't know if it would.

Just tested on Vashj, Naga Elites & Striders, the animation works but nothing happens.

It does work on Elite mobs, I have tested it on several of the smaller demons which are part of the Akama trash as well as some of the mobs of Bloodboil trash. It just doesnt always work, just as this doesnt always work on lvl 70 players.

i remember this because we were fighting hakkar and everyone was on vent like. W t f where's hakker?

This works on Heroic Training Dummies :D its probably the only boss enemy you can use it on. ive tested with other bosses, and it does nothing.

Just imagine the fun of having a leper gnome pet...

*edit* Shame, I tried it out, the pet got changed to it's original shape when tamed.

I also got it for my twink (lvl 10 haste Pally) and did a little bit of testing.

Sad that the various nerfs have been added over the years but at low levels this little toy has some pretty drastic base effects on your enemy.

The shape shifting is fun but if you are a lvl 1 or 10 twink facing a lvl15-20 in duels or world pvp (I just love going over to Westfall on my lvl 10 and Pwning higher toons), this thing has bite!

Hunters trying to kite you, suddenly get in alot of trouble with a 40 damage reduction and a 20% loss in movement! Casters that get 'smerfed' by this, lose movement but also 40 spell power? Now i don't know about you, but unless i set out to build spell power into my toons heavily at low lvls (under 20) that debuff will mean that casters are now shooting at you with <negative> Spell Power values! If you have any HP at all, you are gonna wipe the floor with them :)

This ray is now going to be standard equipment when I head over to enemy territory to pick fights.

An important note from my testing: I found that as a lvl 10 player I was NOT able to transform any player over lvl 40... i'm not sure what the internal dynamics are, concerning that but it seems to have a limited effect based on the user. Beware of this aspect if you intend to use it as a poor man's "polymorph + escape" tool.

Also, I was very glad to find out that it DOES NOT need to be equipped in any manner so you don't use up a valuable trinket slot or off-hand slot or ranged. Another bonus was that you can stack these in your bags and get endless charges since they are not unique. I had 3 for my first experiment so 15 charges were available with no shuffling.

And even better, this did NOT trigger a shared CD with my engineering items like bombs or "minor recombobulator", woot!

Lastly, these easily sold for 45g ea on my servers, once they were advertised in trade chat a bit, so possibly some mid-level engineering money to be made off this item.

So simple even ret paladins can use it.

In 19 twink bgs, as a rogue I find it makes me much less vulnerable to those pesky mages, who just love to hit their frostbolt.
