Too bad you can't rename demons with this. I think that would be a major selling point, no more Jhuudun, Jhoodon, Jhuudon in 3 warlocks. If the demons are to be summoned by us, why can't we call them what we want rather than what they want to be called... meet fluffy, my new Felguard.

That reminds me that story of a newbie warrior in a instance that noticed hunter healing his pet so he asked hunter to heal him aswell.
Hunter goes something like "sure, but for that i'll have to make u my pet". Warrior agrees but only for the duration of the instance.
So during instance warrior thought he was getting healed by hunter.
In the end, with full instance cleared, warrior then asks hunter to stop making him his pet.
Hunter denies it, saying he was keeping him as pet and warrior would have to walk with hunter around.
Warrior goes bezerk thinking all of that was true and saying he was going to report hunter for harassment...

When this item is used, after a few seconds of cast time, it disappears and window pops up asking what you would like to name your pet.
I renamed my ghost wolf to Discontinued. :)

The reason behind not being able to rename a demon is because basic fantasy lore dictates that the only way to control a demon is to know its true name.

Why do you need this? Hunters can name their pet when they tame them? Or can they not anymore?

I think you can use it only once - but that you can rename your pet only once every 7 days using a fresh one.

I logged onto my brother's account and renamed his pet gorilla Bjork for the hell of it. He didn't know what happened until I told him XD!

I'm gonna say, that since we haven't so much enslaves most of these demons as we have bound them through really brual trickery and the like... that we cannot rename them. It is the same as binding a person to your service, they still have their name.

Perhaps if we could go beat the %^&* out of a random one, then we should be able to call it whatever we want to.

Though true names are usually not given by a demon willingly, they tend to have an assumed name so those things cannot come to be. For that reason, I could see renaming them to something so someone else cannot find a way to free them.

Sadly this is the only scroll you can feel safe about selling. All other scrolls are secondary to raid buffs so don't expect to make a ton of money off of them.

Note: you do not have to immediately rename your pet when you use this item. You can use this item to erase your pets name, and then rename your pet at some point in the future.

When you use this item, it is used up. The cooldown refers to using multiple Certificates of Ownership. Only one can be used per seven days.

When you use this item, it will pop up a window asking you what you want to rename your pet to. At the same time, your pet name will be erased and reset to the pet family.

If you wish to erase your pet's name, but don't have a new name yet, you can simply dismiss the rename dialog box. Your pet will have its pet family default name again, and you can rename your pet by right-clicking on its portrait and choosing Rename, at any time in the future.

BIG EDIT: This no longer works in 3.1, because of changes to the way the Certificate of Ownership works. Now, when you use the item, you do not get a pop-up window -- instead, your currently active pet simply gets a "Rename" option when you right-click its portrait. You must use the rename before you swap pets. If you swap pets without using the rename, it will be lost, and you will have to wait a week to do it again.

Don't choose an "inappropriate" name when using this item, as it will tell you to chose a different name then close the window. I tried to change my gorilla's name from GrapeApe to Optimus. I guess Optimus isn't allowed, so now I'm stick with the name "Gorilla" for 7 days.

I took out my pet, used the scroll, the scroll disappeared from my inventory, right clicked on my pets name and the only options are Set Focus, Pet Details, Abandon, and Cancel. Did I do something wrong?

Edit: Just used another scroll and the pets name was the same, but this time when I right clicked the portrait there was a "Rename" option. I'm guessing either be sure your pet is targeted when you use the scroll or else it wont work and you'll waste it and have to wait a week.

Edit: Edit: I logged on to another character for a second to send something then back onto my hunter and the 'Rename' option was gone... time to wait a 2nd week and buy a 3rd scroll. I would just go re-tame another pet like it but its an unique rare spawn with an estimated 32-48hr spawn.

Moral of the story:
1. Target pet.
2. Use scroll.
3. Rename it at that moment in time, don't wait.

This may seem silly, but be warned if you use the item and don't rename your pet before you log out. I had used the scroll whilst deciding upon my pet's new name but was called on to another character to do something else. I log back in and find the option to rename is gone!

Don't make the same mistake I did.

This item is often bought out and relisted for outlandish gold values like 500g, not even worth CLOSE to that, just wait for it to be listed for a fair price and then buy.

Don't forget to have the pet by your side and target it before using the scroll. I failed to target the selected pet and had the one, who was in the "call pet" stable, renamed in its place.

For those who are wondering why you can't Rename your demons, It's because they are Summoned, You can't rename someone that has a given name already & they only respond to their real names(In lore and in real demonology folklore), Pets don't come with names because they are incapable of giving themselves names and pets(irl and in-game) learn to associate (their) names with themselves.
Example: Thokthyk is my current warlock's Voidwalker name, When I go to a demon trainer to request a new name, I'm summoning a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Demon.
My main Hunter's bear name is Ursidae, I can rename him with this Item, because regardless, my pet(lets pretend they are irl beings) will respond due to association.

again, If you "rename" a demon, You are just Summoning a Completely Different demon, If you rename your Pet, You are just Re-associating your pet to a different word/name.

Yesterday I tried to rename my hunter pet. It didn't work, even with no addons activated.
The scroll was consumed, but the window that lets you rename your pet didn't pop up.
A 2nd try didn't work either. Seems to me it's broken.

Now that rare pets can keep their unique names (even if it's 3 words long or has special characters like ' and -), I wanted to see the Certificate would allow you to reset your pets name or copy/paste the pet's original name. It does not. If you want a rare's original name, you just have to go retame it :(

Blizz, why are you trying to make this game like real life? Seriously, a freaking CERTIFICATE is required now? This is another one of many things that no body asked for or wanted. Go back to the simpler method of just right clicking the freaking pet portrait.....

I usually don't need to rename pet often, but I seem to remember when you could rename your pet more than once without any special 'certificate'...? When did they make that change? :O

Just tried to rename my newly tamed pet today and was wondering why the "Rename" option was not there anymore. After further research turns out we now need one of these.

So annoying wtf. Such an unneeded change. Anyway I bought one off the AH and activated it, it gave me the option to rename my pet once again. I guess every time we rename our pets we will need one of these.

My pet was just a generic cat pet btw. Doesn't have to be a rare, you will still need one of these

Just bought 7 of these (basically all of them) off the AH. They created by Inscription. But back in the day I gave some of my pets weird names and now that you retain the original Beast name after taming - and I want to have the double pet look - I would like to rename my pet back to it's original in-game name if possible so these come in handy :)

ALSO - if you're wondering why these don't work or how to use... This is how it works:

When you tame a beast it either keeps it's name or doesn't (case in point - go tame Shango the orange kitty in Sholazar Basin. The name changes to "cat" once you tame it). So if you name the cat Bob - but later decide to actually use it's original name Shango. You now have to buy a certificate to change the name again.

So basically: Tame. Change name. Use certificate. Change name again

I feel sorry for non-max level hunters. They're 100g on my NA server. Imagine being a new player and not being able to rename your pet until you can bomb 100g on it.

is it nothing like this in classic? i tamed the wolf from LBRS and it was hard then i named him wrong.. dont wanna have to do the struggle of taming him again

I spoke to multiple GMs today about this-- apparently the inability to rename a new pet may be intentional.

I did some digging into this issue. As far as we can tell at this time, this may have been an intentional change. It seems the previous GM may have assumed this was a bug, but this is happening for all players as you mentioned.

There's a clarification request in now, but for the time being, our external article seems to suggest that the Certificate of Rename being needed is an intentional change. We'll update it if that changes though, so thanks for pointing it out!

Very inconvenient and unnecessary, imo.

SOLVED: I had to disable ElvUI to get the pet portrait frame to right-click on. Also discovered you must have the pet in your first pet slot to be able to rename it, otherwise the "rename" option will not appear.

Original post: Patch 9.1 - I tamed my pet and renamed him, but now I want to change the name. I bought one of these certificates, target pet, click cert, casting bar completes and then gives error "You can already rename your pet." But when I right-click the pet name bar, there is no option for renaming. Any ideas?

Using the Certificate of Ownership STILL doesn't work if you're trying to reset the pets name too default. Case in point:

I originally named it Loqi back in the day.
Now I want the default name back.
Used certificate. Can rename - but cannot use apostrophe - so therefore cannot rename it by original name. You also cannot leave the name empty and rename it in hopes that it will revert back to its original name - which is stupid.

It seems the only way to get the default name - is to go and tame another one which in this case with a spawn as rare as this - is 'hell no' - I'm not going through that again... I have my 2.

I'm just going to use a couple of certificates and take the apostrophe out completely.
...unless I'm missing something here...
