Since the patch, I have killed 1 yellow animal, think a caribou, no drop, a plagued mammoth, drop, and one of those worm things that are all spikey, drop... So, I think they upped the drop rate and the mobs that can drop it. (EDIT: All in BT)

The drop rate on chilled meat is crazy silly high -- in Sholazar. I have around 8 stacks. It just won't go away. Whereas I never get any chilled meat in, say, Grizzly Hills.

Needed for the daily cooking. My personal farming spot is just south from Amber Ledge in Borean Tundra. There are several groups of Rhinos there, and as a Tankadin, I tend to pull 10-15 of them, down them, pull another 10-15, and do that until I get all my 12 pieces for the daily.

Scholazar Basin may be better, I just haven't been there yet.

Thank you for commenting, according to current wowhead, its showing the highest drop rate and only drop rate from non-elites is in the first dungeon of the Xpac..which I thought to be crazy until you two above posted XD

I've had three drop while doing quests around the gnome flightstrip in Borean Tundra - 2 off of oil-covered worgs, and 1 off an oil-covered caribou.

They have not nerfed the drop rate to zero. Only removed the drop from a fair few mobs, including rhino's and mammoths afaik. As to what other mobs the drop has been removed from im yet to determine. I killed well over 50 rhino's without a single drop. Then moved to mammoth's and still nothing after 10-15 mobs. But as soon as i started on the deer's and other such yellow mobs as well as the black worgs near the airstrip boom! drop rate as per normal.

The drop rate scales with the level of the mob your killing along with your own level. Yellow and orange rated mobs drop the meat while green rated mobs have a zero drop rate. This is to prevent people from mass farming the lower level areas.

I'm definitely under the impression that they changed the drop rate after the last maintenance... I had been farming rhinos for the rhino dog cooking daily, getting tons and tons of chilled meat, almost no rhino meat at all (which I assumed was the reason it's the only daily that give 2 cooking awards...).
Now, I'm getting so much rhino meat it's ridiculous, compared to chilled meat which I get 1 every 40-50 kills or so...
A nice 50/50 balance would be ideal... I find it's a lot easier to gather the rhinos outside Warsong Hold and AoE them down than anything else anywhere else I've tried...

Best mobs i've found to farm these are Hardknuckle foragers. They spawn by packs of 5-6 southeast of Scholazar, east of the Sapphire hide.

Not many packs, but almost each mob dropped one, so you've got yourself 10 easily at every respawn. But i suggest getting them while doing something else.

today i found a very good mob to loot this Meat, the mob is Lion Seal
they are Lev70 mobs and grounded, very easy to be Aoeed.

My personal farming spot for this is The Flood Plains, just north of Valiance Keep in Borean Tundra, roughly 61,56.
Great droprate from the Marsh Caribou over there. There are plenty of these mobs even if others are farming that spot.

I don't if it was just me but I could only get the chilled meat to drop either in the water or in a snow area/zone. Anywhere else and the meat just would not drop. I killed wolves and shovel tusks around Howling fjord area for an hour straight and I got nothing, moved into the snow area, killed a couple rams got the 4 pieces I needed. I also got one to drop off a shark.

Chilled Meat no longer drops from the Rhino packs in Borean Tundra. Used to farm both Chilled & Rhino meat for cooking dailies off these. Today I've killed over 150 and gotten NO Chilled meat whatsoever.

Off to check the Rhinos in Scholazar.

I found that killing all of the packs of gorilla usually left me with a small amount of time between respawns. This is enough time to go to your Sholazar faction base (I.e., Oracle or Frenzyheart) and sell the vendor trash from these mobs, freeing up some bag space (The hair only stacks in groups of 5).

After farming 40 Meat, I had over 10 gold's worth of that stuff. Very nice overhead coverage.

There are lots of seals here on a very quick spawn, all of which can drop it - even the baby ones. They have very low HP. I found the drop rate to be higher than stated.

In 45 minutes as a feral druid (hardly a damage class) I got nearly 5 stacks and more than 15gold from the junk they dropped as well as a few greens.

Well, the bad news is there are only 7 Sand Turtles if you plan to go that route for chilled meat, so if you plan to grind them you are in for a short wait as they respawn. The good news is that there is nothing there that can kill you (only plenty of neutral Landing Crawlers) so you can take quick afks after you kill all 7 to wait for them to repop. It's a nice lazy way to skin and get chilled meat while leveling an under 70 pet while typing in chat to friends/guildies. I really don't recommend it as a grinding spot for chilled meat, however, as the drop rate seems to be lower than the reported 40% in my experience.

I believe that chilled meat is only dropped from mobs of your level or mobs you can gain experience from. Or they have a much higher rate of dropping them. When I first came to Northrend the Wild Worgs near Vengeance Landing had like an 80% drop rate and I was thrilled. Recently I've been using many chilled meat for cooking and went back to find no drops of chilled meat in over 40 wolves...I did however manage 26 worg haunch. Just a guess...but slightly educated :D

The Reef Cow and Reef Bulls are a great source of meat and leather, and respawn extremely quickly. You might bug a few players as they are quest-related, but the quest is short and the respawn rate shouldn't be an issue.

Sure, Sholazar mobs might have the better drop rate, but everyone knows the most entertaining way to farm Chilled Meat is by massacring the baby seals in Howling Fjord.

The croc's in Sholozar have a near 100% drop rate, tried the hardnuckle foragers and it was like 1 in 4. Less competition for the crocs, better drop rate = better grind.

Without a doubt, the large packs of Seals at 75, 75 in Howling Fjord is the best place to farm if you can AOE, particularly as a Frost Mage. Gather up 3-4 packs (like 20 mobs or more in total), frost nova, blizzard, loot. Extremely fast, extremely easy.

The deer in Crystalsong Forest do not appear to drop any meat. I killed about 15 today while farming for the cooking quest -- no dice. Meanwhile, the caribou in Borean Tundra drop tons.

My advice: Stock up whenever you get the chance, because there aren't any areas near Dalaran where this stuff can be found.

Edit: Upon closer examination, it appears that the deer-type beasts in Crystalsong are the only ones that do *not* drop meat. Every other deer I encountered in other zones have dropped this stuff. Looks like an oversight on Blizzard's part.

If you need to farm this stuff and you're an aoe class, massacre the seals at 79, 74 in Howling Fjord.

If you are planning on farming Chilled Meat, may I suggest that you farm Icepaw Bears on the snowy mountains at the border of Zul'Drak and Storm Peaks.

The Mangal Crocolisk has a droprate about what is advertised, around 60%. So if you're doing the daily Appeasing the Great Rain Stone for the Oracles, take a little time and kill every Crocolisk you see. It should keep your stock of Chilled Meat steady (unless you get Convention at the Legerdemain two days in a row...)

one thing that's not taken into consideration is that you actually MAKE money from doing the dailies. often times i can break even if i buy the chilled meat and then use it for the daily, and i'd still end up ahead due to cooking awards and spice rewarded.

You're also not taking into consideration that it's used for more than just the dailies. The Great Feast, which can give a serious food buff to an entire raid, requires four of them apiece. It is that useful.

Chilled Meat + Worg Haunch combo spot

Outside of Conquest Hold in Grizzly Hills there are both worgs + Tallhorn Stags aplenty, stags drop the chilled meat and worgs drop the worg haunches. However the Worgs kill stags after a few bites so I suggest killing those first. You will get a solid mix of both meats farming this area.

If you need to get about 4 Chilled Meats for a cooking daily, I've found that stopping by Valkyrion before doing Sons of Hodir dailies for the Blighted Proto-Drakes there is a quick and easy way. to obtain them.
They seem to have a fairly high recorded drop rate as well.

As stated above, the best place to farm these is 77,75 in Howling Fjord slaying seals.
Just to give you some numbers I've done an hours run on Aszune with a lvl 80 hunter with skinning profession.
I picked up:
75 chilled meats
About 40g of vendor trash
124 borean leather
3 arctic fur

Well worth an hours work in my opinion.

As a skinner and capable of Aoe´ing I found the seals in South Howling fjord the best place for me to grind Chilled Meat. After clearing the beach twice I ended up with:
39 Gold 14 s worth of Grays
2 Arctic Furs
2 Greens
86 Chilled Meat
66 Borean Leather
Took about 15 minutes, Happy Hunting.

For me, to get the most entertainment out of my meat, I am more into doing the monkey slap rather then clubbing. A lot of us who have spent time on those long remote Nesingwary Expeditions would agree it is much more cost effective to do the work solo of churning that Hardknuckle into Chilled Meat then it is to go into the city and buy it.

The update should be coming soon since I have the client and I am farming Chilled Meat right now, but just moments ago I discovered the Longneck Grazers at Sholazar Basin around 41,88 currently have a 100% drop rate*. I am sure the same applies to the other Longnecks in the zone. The nice part is that these guys also happen to be along the routes for both ore and Adder's Tongue farming.

Edit: *Here it is the next day, and I guess I was just having a sudden burst of luck when I was farming but now after a sample of 50 total Longneck Grazers I have a new rate estimate. According to the fresh data my MobInfo3 estimated the actual rate of 72% for the level 76 Longnecks and 62% for the level 75 Longnecks. In any case, this is still very high and really convenient when you are farming herbs or ore long that route anyway.

The error in this is that you assume they're exclusively and freely convertible (as in the only reason people would get chilled meat is to get the spices).

First off people do the dailies for recipes (which consume awards), so a fair amount of chilled meat isn't going to be converted to spices. Secondly, a lot of people keep the spices to themselves, again raising the price of the spices. Thirdly, you can only do the daily once a day, whereas meat is in unlimited supply (meaning you end up with a 'premium', much like an alchemical / titansteel style transmutation cost).

Given these three, I'm not entirely surprised that meat is a great deal cheaper than spices.

frost leopards.If you're not the type to want to massacre baby seals, and find the monkeys too slow, another good place to grind out chilled meat is Zul'Drak, south-east of the Altar of Har'koa. There are quite a few Icepaw bears and some Frost leopards. The drop rate for both is probably about 50, and the only drop a few trash items that are still valuable. I was able to farm up 40 meat and about 20g in greys, plus 80 leather in less than an hour.

I agree with Zul'Drak, but not quite the same area. Look on your map and you will see a fairly large open area between the Altar of Har'koa and the Altar of Quetz'lun, this is full of frost leopards and icepaw bears. As an 80 retridin i could burst down each beast in about 3 secs, and the area is large enough that a circuit will give enough time for respawns, so you can farm continously. The drop rate seemed to be very high, ~70%, and i had 3 stacks of chlled meat in under 25 mins (timed by blessing of might).

Just a word of caution to those factioned with the Oracles: the mobs in Sholazar Basin that drop chilled meat sometimes spawn dangerously close to Frenzyheart Hill. Just be careful where you go to farm, otherwise you might run into large groups of Frenzyhearts.

The rhinos/mammoths running around in Storm Peaks, are the closest mobs from Dalaran.
Personally, I use to farm a lot of Chilled Meat when I'm bored, so never really have to go farm short term.

Edit: Pretty low drop rate here, so if you're up to farming you should go to Howling Fjord or Sholazar Basin.

when I'm doing the cooking daily in Dalaran, I just go slightly south by southeast to tom-tom 56.83, 12.3 at the Crystal Vice crevase in Dragonblight and hit the Ice Heart Jormungar Feeders & Spawn for both chilled meat and Worm meat. Short hop and great drop rates. Occassionaly some other stuff too. Wish I knew how to put the grid location in a blue hot link.

UPDATE- This'll teach me to keep my big trap shut. Since this post, the drop rate for me has shrunk dramaticaly. Now it's 1/10 or less. Wah.

Learn Northern Cooking and/or Northern Stew in Northrend

If you are in Northrend (Wrath of the Lich King, WoTLK) and want to learn cooking and/or the recipe Northern Stew do the following.

Each of the trainers in Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord can teach you to cook Northern Stew. All you have to do is finish a short quest where all you have to do is bring 4 Chilled Meat. Buy or farm 4 Chilled Meat. If you are going to farm the meat I give some advice below depending on if you are going to Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord.

Alliance Learn Northern Cooking

You can learn Northern Cooking either in Dalaran, Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord. In Dalaran go to the inn A Hero's Welcome and locate Katherine Lee using these 2 Waypoints:

Any beast may drop the meat but I usually just kill mobs in Howling Fjord along the coast south of Vengeance Landing. For example you can farm Lion Seals and Lion Seal Whelps with about 40 percent drop chance for Chilled Meat. You can use these coordinates:
