I tried to farm Heavy Hide in STV, near the arena.
The result was mostly Thick Leather and only a single Heavy Hide.
I farmed for about 45 minutes. I might have been unlucky, but don't say you weren't warned :).

EDIT: in Swamp of Sorrows, as the poster above me recommends, i got 3 Heavy Hides so far, and i haven't even finished one loop around the lake.

You guys posting above me are going to hate me for bringing down the drop rates on this page so much... Almost two full circuits around the lake so far, and only two Heavy Hides to show for it, and nary a Shadow Silk or White Spider Meat.

I can only come to the conclusion that I am, in fact, doing it wrong. (Even if rewards are generated when the critter is spawned, not on-loot. (But what about skinning, I wonder? (And what happens if the person killing it isn't a skinner? (I like parenthetical abuse. =P))))

I recommend Dustwallow Marsh, specifically Wyrmbog for farming Heavy Hide over Swamp of Sorrows. There are a lot of Dragonkin there for the hide and if you're hurting for Heavy Leather there are Hatchlings and Crocks to fill that void from kin to kin. I've had a lot better luck there.

IF you're 50+, I'd recommend soloing Uldaman. A quick glance at the drop table shows that 3 of the mobs within the top 10 for drop rate are found there. The scorpids, in particular, come in packs, making for efficient AoE farming. When you're done, just pop out the back entrance.
Additional money can be made offering lower level people runs for a reasonable fee with the understanding that you get all the leather.

It's still slow going as far as hides, but may be one of the quickest way to farm medium, heavy and thick leather simultaneously. One clear and a run out the back door of Uldaman for a reset is very quick.

Two full clears yielded:

Heavy Leather x50
Medium Leather x28
Thick Leather x14

Thick Hide x1

Dragonkin are going to be your best bet for Heavy Hides. In fact, dragonkin are going to be your best bet for any leather resource.

When the game was first released, all dragonkin (Excepting things like whelps) were Elite mobs and accordingly dropped more silver, leather, etc. When a patch was introduced to scale back the difficulty of leveling quite some time ago, one of the changes made was to make formerly elite mobs normal. Generally this was for things such as Col. Kurzen, the Stromgarde quests, etc -- but Dragonkin were also made non-elite. It doesn't appear that their loot table (At least, their skinning table) was changed in accordance with a scaling back of their difficulty, so the reason why people are reporting much better success rates on them is because they're still dropping leathers and hides at an ELITE mob's droprates.

So regardless of where you are in leatherworking, if you're farming leathers and have access to appropriately leveled dragonkin, they'll be a good source of easy resources all the time.

At lvl48 I found that farming heavy leather and heavy hide was far more easier in Dustwallow. 40min farming=40 heavy leather, 5 heavy hide and can't count how much thick hide. (Method: boomkin, barkskin on and hurricane - do large pulls).

Well, the situation seems to be that anything that can yield Heavy Leather has a much slighter chance of yielding Heavy Hide. I've been going to Dustwallow for the leather & picking up 1-2 hides is always a bonus. I usually rely on AH.

Probably the best spot:
RFK (Razorfen Kraul)

- Did this wit my 52 hunter
- A run took ~15min from entering to exiting and resetting.
- Hides per run: 3-5 (12-20 per hour // Which on my server is - 180-300g per hour @Level 52

How-to?

1. Enter the instance
2. Run straight to the bats(Kraul Bat, or Greater Kraul Bat)
3. Gather them all and AoE, Loot, and skin them (usually gets 2-4 on all bats)
4. Kill the piggyboss (Agathelos the Raging) He has OVER 100% droprate on Heavy Hides according to wowhead =D
5. Ta-daa! Cookiez for us pro players levling a pain-in-the ass skill before cataclysm.. :D

The problem with drops like this is that when the percentage is below 10% or so, count on it being very sporadic. i've gone to swamp of sorrows and dustwallow marsh multiple times to farm the dragonkin there. sometimes heavy hide drop like crazy, sometimes you run it for hours and get maybe one.

I found that the best drops for me were in tanaris right outside town from the little dog /hyena looking things. And if ur trying to lvl ur leatherworking which more than likely u r then make sure to keep all the thick leather you get because you'll need a crap load of it later.

I can fairly say that Lethlore Ravine is respectively good heavy hide. The drop rate for thick hide is slightly higher but not by much. I think this is a positive thing cuz as mentioned in other comments you will need lots thick leather and positively thick hide. i averaged around 5 heavy hide per 30 minutes. The funny thing is I got more heavy hide from other people's kills who were training in the area and not skinning the bodies xD.

Honestly, save yourself from the hours I've spent trying to find a good, reliable way to farm these, if you're ~ level 60, just go farm Agathelos the Raging from Razorfen Kraul, high drop rate pretty much guarantees a drop everytime. Have to have like a pet or something to take the forced feign death though. (For Shamans, Elemental Guardian, Locks: Voidwalker, you get the idea)

As a skeptic, im gonna have to say that after looking EVERYWHERE, the best place to try and farm is right out Gatdgetzhan (sp?). found 3 after killing the hyenas in 15 MIN! maybe i got lucky, but that was where i got the most.

As with Heavy Leather, and some Thick Leather, Feral Scar Vale in Ferelas is by far the best place. 3 hides in like 8 kills. Tried Tanaris and got 1 heavy hide in about 30 kills the same day, so you can guarantee it isn't my luck. Trust me, the respawn times are great here, by the time you make a loop they respawn. Best place by far for the Heavy section of Leatherworking.

they need to either increase the drop rate on heavy hide or remove it from some recipes. when you get to around 180 in leatherworking, the amount of heavy leather you need to skillup can be cut in half if you have a supply of heavy hide available.. heavy hide is so scarce both in drops and at auction house that i cant skill-up in leatherwork without using recipes calling for 10,12, or 16 heavy leather as opposed to 5, 6, or 8 heavy leather plus 1 or 2 cured heavy hide

From leatherworking 155 to 300 you need this:

180 Heavy Leather
20 Heavy Hides
410 Thick Leather
410 Rugged Leather

Now, if you cut back on the heavy hides you need a *lot* more Heavy Leather.

What can you say. Blizzard should have reduced the amount of material needed long ago.

The Cured Heavy Hides are a major roadblock while leveling up Leatherworking, and I was very disheartened by their price and rarity on the Auction House.

While wandering around with a skinner, I eventually found a good spot. The Shaggy Black Bears just to the northwest of Chillwind Point in Western Plaguelands are level 32-36 and dropped Heavy Hide somewhat regularly.

Edit: They are also plentiful and respawn fast.

Probably they changed something. I didn't count exactly, but after killing about 20 bears I had only 2 Heavy Hides. Mostly I skinned Havy Leather from them.

I've reached over 300 in skinning: got 10 heavy hides in all that time. Don't bother to go to The Hinterlands now, by the way: the gryphons can no longer be skinned.

I'm running into similar problems for other tradeskills...vital skill-up elements are missing across the board. Didn't ANY tradeskillers help develop Cata?

I tried several of the places people have suggested so far and the one I found to be most useful was the location in Tanaris, outside of Gadgetzan. Not far outside the gates is a field of Blisterpaw Hyenas (some are chowing on downed game). The regen is pretty good and the loot isn't too bad as in it won't waste too much bag space (if you ever wanted a lucky rabbits foot, you'll get PLENTY). My numbers in just about an hour of light farming (there was a dungeon in there):

Thick Leather - 22
Heavy Leather - 20
Heavy Hide - 4
Thick Hide - 5

I went back after leveling with the Heavy Hides to get more Thick Leather and the drop numbers were about the same for the Heavy Hides. Not bad, easy to access, Gadgetzan is right there to empty bags if you don't have much space and they have a bank so you could store the leather you get if you wanted to. The same can't be said for many of the other locations.

thanks Nevadagrrl - the hyenas were a good source of variety of leathers, quick regen and handy to Gadgetstan. The are immediately west of there. Decided to try for 30mins with my 53 Orc hunter - one shotted and some still green to me (lvl 44/45). Got the following, tho would have liked more hides :)
33 thick leather
29 heavy leather
4 heavy hides
3 thick hides

+ 36 mystery meats if you need to lvl cooking.

mmm I musnt be very lucky ... 1st hyena was a heavy hide drop (i was after these) ... 30+ kills later no more hide ... then a thick hide ... nothing for 10 more kills ... but did get 26 heavy and 25 thick leather ....21 mystery meat ... and the highest drop was 32 Rabbit's foot (well maybe they arent so lucky after all - except if ur after rabbits feet)
My toon is a skinner not a leather workier so im not sure if that makes a difference to the drop rate. The hyena do respawn fast i was 1 shotting them and never ran out of targets, so if its just leather you're after not bad ... not so good for hides tho..

Just about to finish as loremaster of Kalimdor as a leatherworker / skinner.
I mostly concentrated on quests and skinned all skinnable loot as I came across it, and also tried to grind whenever possible (I did the green hills of stranglethorn though - just for the leather)..

Heavy Hides going for about 45G on my server - with only one or two in the AH at any time. I am right now stuck at lvl 196 LW and in need of heavy leather, or heavy hides to get to start sucking up the massive amounts of thick leather in my bank.

Medium hides were found easily in STV. But heavy hides - I only ran across 2 in my time questing Kalimdor. And maybe total of about 60-80 heavy leather.

When I start over in Eastern Kingdoms I hope to have better luck, and will definitely be grinding more skinnable mobs in those zones (where I'll be starting.)
Going to try the other part of STV next, then will move on to badlands, and swamp of sorrows before starting on the early level zones.

Feralas for sure. I lvld up LW from 190 to 225 so I needed heavy leather, and heavy hides didn't hurt ether. Went farming in the two yeti caves, the areas around the southern of the caves is filled with bears, stags, wolves and hippogriffs, left with <100 leathers and 10 hides. The wolves dropped 5 of the hides, and I only killed about 15 of them. Happy huntin'

I've gone to every place suggested here, and guess I've had no luck, so I've been farming the boss from RFK, I get at least one per run, when my guild perk procs I get 2-4 per run, now this isn't the fastest heavy hide farming because of the amount of instances per hour you can do, but it's one of the few ways of getting a granted drop from skinning.

I found the best place to farm for hide is off the Noxious Whelps in Feralas, they have a chance to drop emerald whelpling and the sprite darter egg too so its sort of a 3 in 1 =]

30 minutes of farming the Mottled Drywallow Crocolisk (lvl) 36, Raptors, Noxious Reavers, and other crocs in Dustwallow Marsh (Location: Lost Point (Quagmire) I got 101 Heavy Leather, 7 Heavy Hide ( All from Mottled Drywallow Crocolisk) , 2 Medium Hide, 16 Thick Leather, 14 Medium Leather, and some meats. I haven't even started on the dragon kin yet. Bountiful Bags perk has helped out a lot as I got 2 extra Heavy Hide from it.

After 45 more minutes of farming dragonkin, whelps, level 38-39 crocs and finally back to the level 35+ Drywallow Snapper(crocs) and Mottled Drywallow Cocs, I netted 141 Heavy Leather, 12 HEAVY HIDE (6 Heavy Hides were from 1 kill I swear a level 35 Drywallow Snapper) Bountiful Bags works awesome! 38 Thick Leather, 9 Medium Leather. Dustwallow Marsh seems to be great if you farm the 35+ crocs. Lemme just say I am a level 80 Goblin Shaman as well. Hope this helps.

The Yeti Cave in Feralas (where the mechanical chicken quest/beacon quest turns in) is a good a farming spot for this, as it is many creatures close together. We had better luck there over RFD, & RFK. Desolace was too low for this.

Ouch farming this is just ridiculous tried the yeti cave for about an hr and only got 2 heavy hides, just tried plague bats in Eastern Plague lands and got 3 hides within 30mins.

Ok plague bats in eastern plaguelands was better for drops i got my 10 i needed in about 2hrs farming.

Every single post I have followed for heavy hides has been a bust! I went to Stranglethorn vale to farm gorillas and jungle stalkers and got 0 hides, i went to RFK and got 0 hides, I tried a few other posts I looked up on google and got zilch. Not sure how Blizzard expects you to use this ingredient when you cant get any!

i decided to go try rfk for these, and by far its seems really good at least 2 heavy hides per run, with 100% off the boar boss, and killing all the bats in the cave and then all the boars down below while running back, getting between 2-4 hides per run not to bad, and if you also farm your own leather, you can get a bunch of medium and heavy leather and also medium hides while getting ur heavy hides for lving LW enjoy

A guild member and myself ran around trying to find a good place to loot heavy hide since MoP and after no luck in Desolace, Dustwallow Marsh, or Razor Fen Downs, we decided to try Western Plaguelands. We found 0 hide from skinning in those 3 places.

When we got into Western Plaguelands, we found 2 on the first skin. The bears gave us the best return from there.

I have tried every place that has been posted here for heavy hide with limited success. The Silvermane Stalkers in the hinterlands was pretty good. After about an hour there I had 3 heavy hides, so I decided to go look somewhere else. I went to the Southern Barrens just below Hunter's Hill (approx. cords. 40.94, 24.48) where the raptors spawn. GOLDMINE! After 30 minutes of skinning raptors there I had 9 heavy hides! Granted it's all RNG, but this was by far the most productive spot I have tried. And the raptors respawn rate is crazy fast. They are all in a small area so it's easy skinning. Hopefully this wasn't an isolated incident. Give it a try. At the very least you can load up on medium and heavy leather in a short time with very little effort. Happy skinning!

I did RFK, killing bats, boar and Agathelos the Raging. Got 1 heavy hide from bats, 2 from boars and from the Agathelos the Raging some times i got 6, some times i got 2. Best place to farm

northwest of Camp Mojache in Feralas (coords: 71; 41) there is a huge field full of bears, wolves and dragonkins (and some stupid tree elementals which are not skinnable >:( )
They all drop heavy leather, sometimes thick leather and our desired heavy hide. I got 5 heavy hides in only 10-15 minutes. Maybe just pure luck, but I think it is a good farming spot.

For those who are having trouble finding this like i was, go to Dustwallow Marsh and kill and skin the dragonkin that are around the entrance to Onyxias Lair. In about an hour i got 17 Heavy Hides and 280 Heavy Leather.

Got 16 from Scalding Whelps while farming for Dark Whelpling, in about an hour. (Cloak and Dagger + Glyph of Stealth + Subtlety makes for quick kills).

Vendetta Point for Heavy Hide- do eeet!

I just went farming lions (plains Prowler), stormsnouts, plainstriders, and really just anything that moved near Vendetta Point in the Southern Barrens and came away with 5 heavy hide after 30 minutes. (I was actually there for some last minute heavy leather since I was close by on my alliance toon already.) This is a WAY better drop rate then the areas in feralas and much easier then farming razorfen for that 1 drop over and over. (after an hour in feralas I had 1 hide, and after 4 razorfen runs I was ready to scream lol.

As a level 60 rogue I found Razorfen Kraul to be a good farming spot. Took me 15 mins each run to skin the bats, the boss and then down to the boars at the end. First run got me 7 heavy hides (1 off boss, 3 off bats, 3 off boars), second run got me 3 (1 of boss, 1 off bat, 1 off boar). 30 mins for 10 hides seemed a decent enough rate.

As of 6.0.3, they have redone some old instance, unfortunately RFK was one of them.
Boar boss is no longer there, neither are the boars after last boss.

I ran this killing only the bats, got 0 heavy hides.

So I went to Western Plaguelands and Tanaris to no avail. I farmed each location for at least 20 minutes, and I got no hides.

I decided to try Uldaman instead, in the Badlands.

Each run took me less than 10 minutes, and I got 17 hides over the course of 10 runs. Way better droprate than anywhere else. Be sure to kill the scorpids, too! They dropped the majority of the Heavy Hides that I received.

Also, I ended up needing more Medium Leather so I hit up the northern bit of the Cape of Stranglethorn Vale (coords 64.8, 29.8). I killed the basilisks (Ironjaw Basilisk and Ironjaw Behemoth) there (inside the cave and out) making a circle, and I actually got some Heavy Hides from them to my immense surprise and pleasure. I wouldn't recommend farming them for the Heavy Hides because they also drop Medium Hides, but if you're already needing Medium Leather, I would recommend starting there first, then moving on to Uldaman when you're in dire need of the Heavy Hides.

The area around Stonemaul Ruins in Dustwallow Marsh was good for me today. 10 heavy hide, 64 thick leather and 272 heavy leather. That's a drop rate of 10 in 336, or around 3%.

Important notes:
1. Don't just nuke dragonkin. Everything skinnable in the area will drop heavy hide (e.g. crocolisks and the noxious flying snake things). You can then just run around and around the area and there'll always be a mob ready to kill, even if someone else is working the area at the same time
2. Blizzard is using a decent source of randomness. Don't expect the drop rates to be uniform.

If you choose to farm in Uldaman, I recommend using the back door , as it leads directly into the hallway with the skinnables.

You may choose to kill the boss Grimlok , as he has a basilisk pet that can be skinned. I include him in my route but he's not necessary if you want to cut your time down.

Usually I just run from the back entrance to Grimlok, aggroing everything which I then kill at once and skin. This takes 2.5 mins or less for the run and 2 mins or less to loot and skin. It takes a little less than 1 minute for me to run out for a total of ~5.5 minutes per run.

Here are the Heavy Hide drops I've gotten so far:
1st run - 0
2nd - 2
3rd - 0
4th - 1
5th - 1

Even counting the runs where I got 0 drops, that's 4 hides in less than half an hour. Best drop rate I've gotten in all the places I've tried and there's no competition. The only problem you might run into is the instance limit. As far as I know, it's still 10 per hour, though, so at 5-6 minutes per run, if you do hit the cap it won't be a very long wait. Take the opportunity to fly out and mail greens to your bank alt. :)

This method also yields a ton of heavy and thick leathers as well as scorpid scales and I've gotten two Guardian Leather Bracers patterns in 5 runs as well.

As of the current patch, these hides will not drop for characters at max level because the mobs get scaled to level 60, putting them out of the level range for Heavy Hides. I have skinned nearly 200 mobs today in Uldaman and Feralas without one dropping.

Nevermind, they still drop! I just had bad RNG.

After killing enough dragonkin around Onyxia's Lair to collect 100 heavy leather, 26 thick leather and 1 rugged hide <.< I finally got 1 heavy hide. This was also after a friend sent me a heavy hide in the mail.

For anyone leveling vanilla Leatherworking now in Shadowlands time:
Your best bet to get this damn piece of never dropping trash mat is to go to Blackfathom Deeps, make a group finder group (just to port out of the dungeon fast later. no need to invite anyone), run to the Guardian of the Deep boss (he's underwater below the Moon shrine sanctum just before the last 2 bosses) and oneshot him with pretty much anything, then skin him with Tailoring. Leave the group, wait to get tp'd outside, reset the instance and do it all over again.

That's definitely faster than grinding countless mobs with 1-10% drop chance (usually 10% chance mobs are rare) and getting frustrated.

If you're farming for other Vanilla skinning materials, I recommend going for these last because you will probably pick some of them up along the way. If you end up needing more, take the portal to Caverns of Time, then fly to Northern Tanaris. The area between Gadgetzan and Sandsorrow Watch, stretching south towards where the dunes/bones are, has hyenas, scorpids and basilisks that all have a chance to drop heavy hide, including:

One of the nice things about this area is that most of the mobs are the ones you need, there are no trees to get in the way, and the area is so large and populated that by the time you've gotten from one end to to the other, they've already respawned. And personally, I like the variety and find the scenery calming. The downside is the drop rates are both painfully low and also quite variable. But in an hour of farming I got 6 hides, as well as a bunch of other leatherworking supplies and some green BOEs.

I do recommend investing in Corroborante di Lunacupa or bringing a Worgen to speed up the skinning. If you have one that is a druid, even better. I didn't and I still did pretty well.

Edit: Well, I farmed for another twenty minutes (enough time for me to question this post), got nothing at all, then got another 6 hides in less than 5 minutes. These drop rates!

Leatherworkers, Heavy Hide drops fairly decently from Dire Maul. A few things to do before you get there:
1. EMPTY YOUR BAGS!
2. Be on the lookout for Gordock shackle key. These are unique, and are used to free Knot Thimblejack. Knot will give you random goodies for freeing him, including leatherworking patterns. I suggest killing Ogres until one drops, and head straight for Knot. Use the key, collect your reward, and then work your way back to the entrance killing doggies and skinning. If another key drops, head back to Knot, rinse and repeat.
3. If you are just after the hides, there are about 15 doggies in the pit just past the entrance. Kill, skin, exit and reset. They drop a fairly good amount of heavy and thick leather as well,
NOTE: Unless you COMPLETE the instance WITHOUT killing Stomper Kreeg, (the drunk ogre just past the pit of doggies) there is NO one to sell or empty your bags to unless you exit the instance. A Traveler's Tundra Mammoth is essential, but keep in mind you CANNOT mount up inside the instance.
