If your after this as a high level character, a good farming method is to go into SM Cath. guaranteed 2 herb points in each run and as level 70, you can easily skip every mob. Walk out, reset, repeat.... Got me 21 Goldthorn in about 7min.

Much like the fadeleaf advice, Scarlet Monastery library was great for this. As a 66 hunter (yes I know I'm way behind) I was going in and getting 3 points towards my herbalism while getting anywhere from 2-6 gold thorns, and usually 1-3 liferoot. I simply reset the instance and walked back in. However, you can only do this about 5 times or so before you're given the "you have entered too many instances at this time," notification. Still, it was fast, super easy, and much better then running around for an hour looking for herbs.

Confirmed finding about 15 Goldthorn after flying around for 30 minutes. It is scattered throughout the Arathi Highlands.

Well i can confirm there are NONE in swamp of Sorrows. However, SOS is fantastic for golden sansum and sorrowmoss, which is good for 275-300 alchemy. I got about 6 stacks of each in 30-45 min.

After 1.5 hours I have exactly two stacks. There are some in Arathi, some in cape of stranglethrorn. None in hitherlands, its now a 30s zone. Maybe more in Kalimdor.

I only needed a few to level my alchemy so I went to Arathi to snag 10 of them or so. It wasn't too tough, it basically grows on the little gray rock outcroppings spread throughout the zones. If you see gray rock growing out of the grass, that's where you need to look.

Unfortunately, it's one of those things where you're going to find three to four other herbs all growing in the same area so it can be a little tiresome.

I would really like to add the fact no one mention Feralas, its under-rated especially if u know where to look and ur there for everything from fadeleaf to blindweed. this isnt for those of u specifically seeking goldthorn as its nodes are space farther apart but the general over abundance of multiple herbs is astounding. Starting at darkmist ruins go north to where the river stops is about a stack in one run itself, from there head northwest towards Gordunni Outpost, and finally south towards Writhing deep and everywhere in between, its not big and with flying mount incredibly easy. Gl and happy hunting, if you are in Gorefiend realm disregard what i said i need the money. lol

I tried to gather some Goldthorn i Stranglethorn Vale and it did'nt went very well. The northern area was useless, unless you are after bruiseweed or kingsblood because I found loads of it. I went south (The cape of Stranglethorn) and I only found 7 Goldthorns... So I shouldn't recommend STV!

Arathi Highlands is definitely a good place, as someone mentioned before I found the most growing on gray rocks in the middle of the map. Think of Goldthorn as if you're mining for ores, they grow on rockscape and hillsides.

It is slow going, but it spawns all over Arathi Highlands, in the middle and along the edges. It is always on a gray rock. It took me about an hour to get 55 of them.

Did a sweep of Arathi Highlands and I found only one node. Did a sweep of the Hinterlands and I found ten nodes. Hinterlands was much better farming for me. Look for it around hilly/rocky areas.

Speaking as someone who farms Goldthorn regularly, I can tell you that Arathi Highlands has the most Goldthorn nodes of any zone. The key is knowing where they spawn, and I recommend using the map above or Gatherer as a guide. The prolific spawn points include the north to south road that is just west of Refuge point, and the other is the area north of Thandol Span along the small creek and to the east of that creek near the Ogres. Also don't forget to check behind Stromgarde (to the west) and don't bother with Southeast Arathi (where the Witherbark trolls live) there are ZERO Goldthorn nodes in that area. One final note, there are a couple spawn points along Thoradin's wall that many people miss.

I spent 35 minutes in Arathi Highlands today and was able to pickup 24 of them. Most of them were in the rocky hills in the NE part of the zone.

ok so i read on here that the best place for this was in AH, however i only got 11 from 30mins grind most of them were other herbs like earth root or wild steelbloom. so i decided to go to the hinterlands and within 20mins i had obtained 31! as above posters have stated they spawn near boulders but not always on them!
i didnt come across anyone whilst i was herbing in the hinterlands so maybe this could have helped my success.

I did most of my farming in Arathi Highlands because the level of the enemies there are lower but if that's not an issue for you then The Hinterlands is probably the quickest way to farm Goldthorn. I used the addon Routes(with GatherMate2 as my supporting addon for nodes). For those not familiar with how to set up a route using Routes, let me walk you through it:

-Download Routes and an addon that shows nodes on your map like GatherMate2. Make sure it's compatible with Routes. After importing your nodes the following are the steps for setting up a route:

- type /routes
-Click Add on the left side of the panel above Routes.
-At the top create a name for the route(like ArathiGoldthorn) and to the right of that choose the appropriate zone(in this case Arathi Highlands).
-Below that ensure that GatherMate2(or whatever) is checked(should be by default I believe).
-Scroll down and check Herbalism - Goldthorn
-Scroll to the bottom and click Create Route
-Now back to the left under Routes you should see a new tab with the zone you just created your route for, double click that tab and it will display your route name, click it.
To the right you want to click Optimize Route.
Scroll down and click either Foreground or Background. Foreground will lock up your computer for a bit but is faster at generating your route, Background if your computer is a dinosaur so it won't crash you to the desktop. My comp was midrange about 4 years ago and has no trouble with Foreground so most comps will be fine.
-Finished, open up your map for that zone and you should see a pretty nice route drawn out for you. The lines for that route will also show on your minimap while in that zone so you can easily follow it while farming your herb.

The area around Stromgarde Keep you'll want to detour from and go around the north side of the keep and hug the western wall if you don't have a flying mount.

One bit of final warning if you are Alliance, the route will take you directly behind Hammerfall, you might want to avoid that part and skirt around.

When I saw these sell for 200+ gold per stack, I decided to farm these for some cash on a server I started a new character on. I've been sticking to Arathi Highlands, and have used a route that takes me about 12-13 mins to run on a 100% ground speed mount(I'm only level 43). Over four runs, I gathered 55 herbs(16, 11, 13, and 15 per). At 200g/stack, that's about 700g/hour. I've sold them for as much as 275/stack, as well. I submitted a screenshot of the root I've been taking. With a ground mount, you really have to hug the walls south of Stromgarde Keep to not fall in the sea, running straight into them at a slight angle to get around the corners at one point. I have been to every place listed above and found Hinterlands to be the most abundant for this herb. However it is a slow farm, this area provided the overall best results for Goldthorn. I farm alot of herbs for an Alchemy class I do on my server and trust me when i say this is the best area as of the post date on my comment.

I farmed every area mentioned in this thread so far, to test each theory to find out which one works best.
-Only ONE lap per area (except for scarlet monastery, I took advantage of resetting to my 5 instance an hour limit)
-level 85 tauren druid (fast herbing and able to herb while in flight form for super fast farming)
-Artisan flying

Scarlet Monastery: Cathedral - Since I was on foot anyways, I went ahead and picked the liferoot too. And only killed what aggroed to me.
- 20x Goldthorn, 9 Liferoot, 3 Mageweave Cloth in 5:30ish minutes (using dash on CD) And there is ALWAYS guaranteed to be 2 nodes in the zone

Hinterlands - 1 lap gave me a total of: 3 Goldthorn. 6:35 minutes.

Arathi Highlands - 1 lap gave me 14 Goldthorn in 9:45 minutes

Sooo... If you are looking for a quick stack of Goldthorn. Your easiest option is to go into SM: cath and reset to your limit.
If you need more than a stack, keep farming Arathi Highlands for an hour. Should give you more than SM does. But I still recommend farming SM til the game stops you for too many instances, and then go do something else until the hour has passed. (Maybe go farm in Arathi until your instances reset, or go farm some other material, or go get some food to eat lol)

Well after reading the comments here about finding Goldthorn in Arathi Highlands, I went there to try it myself. I've made two complete laps around the zone, the first lap I found 15 goldthorn, which isn't too bad I suppose, but the second lap I was very disappointed to see that the respawn rates for herbs in Arathi Highlands are very high. My second lap netted me 3 goldthorn (from 2 nodes). I would not suggest farming Goldthorn here, but if you only need about 20 of it, then this might be your place.

Of course if there are a lot of people farming this in Hinterlands and AH, Dustwallow Marsh is a decent secondary option. I farmed 17 today with just one flight around the edge and one node in the wyrmbog. I've yet to do a decent scout of the interior but I think the best place here is the rocky areas on the edge of the zone.

So the numbers don't quite match the instance or the aforementioned zones but it's an option nonetheless. Esp if you're doing Kalimdor quests and don't want to travel to the Eastern Kingdoms for whatever reason.

Arathi Highlands is dry of Goldthorn. Farmed for nearly an hour around the edges, and the rocky outcroppings in the center and got maybe 5 nodes. Wild Steelbloom is much more plentiful in Arathi. If you're looking for Goldthorn, go somewhere else.

If you're levelling alchemy as a herbalist, you will find goldthorn a really slow process. Here are my recommendations, I have checked everything people have written above.

First stop (assuming you are high level) go to Scarlet Monastery - Cathedral. Start your stopwatch. In there, there are two goldthorn nodes which proc 1-3 (plus any more you get from the bountiful bags perk). Reset it and run it 4 more times (resetting after each gather). You will likely have just over a stack. Then go to the Hinterlands. There may be some around the edge but, where there is no competition, I always found at least one node on the rocky hills that dot the middle. You're looking at south of Stormfeather, south east of Quel'danil lodge, West of Hiri'watha. There are also nodes that you may come across when oving between these. I racked up around 10 from one circuit without bountful bags. Do 2-3 circuits and you should be approaching your second stack.

You can go to Arathi. I don't recommend going aroudn the edge as it seems to be full of Wild Steelbloom, I recommend making ciruits of the west side, going inland as much as possible between rocks. Check the outside too in the west. However, I really think you run into more of it in the Hinterlands if you keep inside. There are also other alchemy levelling herbs such as Khadagar's Whisper, Blindweed around lakes, Bruiseweed in the troll town, also wild steelbloom around the edge and random nodes of fadeleaf and kingsblood. Much better than Arathi in my opinion.

This should get you up to 55 within an hour if you are using the guide on wow-professions. If not, once the hour is up on your stop watch go back to SM Cathedral to finish the job - you can always run a BG/Dungeon whilst you wait. You should definitely have the goldthorn after a second Cathedral run.

There are only about 25 spawn nodes for Goldthorn in Arathi Highlands and the respawn is pretty slow. Got 15 in one pass. It is best if you just leave to do something else, and come back later to farm the zone again.

Just thought would let people know you can easily get a stack of this from Scarlet Monastery: Cathedral in about 10mins or less.

I needed some to level Alch/Herbalism on my 85 druid, went in picked all the Goldthorn & Liferoots, exit, reset and repeat until you cant enter anymore because of "too many instances entered"

I got 18 Goldthorn & 10 Liferoots in 5 quick runs.

I can confirm hawkyyy's technique above. Was running an alt through the SM and kept seeing Goldthorn everywhere.

Farming tip: Always farm this at night or through the twilight hours. Nodes are everywhere in Arathi, Hinterlands, and Dustwallow. Then hit SM and do a round about. You'll get close to 100 if you hit each area once.

Selling tip: To maximize profit, ALWAYS and ONLY sell this herb when two criteria are met

1) either before a lowbie BG weekend (Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin...) AND
2) When there is close to none on the AH. If you spot a few low priced bundles buy them up and re-post them for no less than 199 gold per stack or 10g per herb.

This works because, obviously, demand is high and supply is low; and most importantly people more likely to pay the steep price are twinks or those leveling alts through pvp. THOSE people have the largest amounts of gold and would rather buy this then waste an hour or two farming it for agility/healing pots. THEY WILL SELL. I typically make 250 gold per stack when the market is low (which is often). Remember to buy up the bargain sellers and repost. I usually stockpile 10 stacks for times like these. Also everytime you hit the AH browse the gold thorn for deals and buy them up for BIG SELLER WEEKENDS. Big time gold maker (better than heartblossom, elementium and even twilight jasmine on Velen).

Just be patient and watch for low supplies. You'll be glad you did.

I didn't track all the numbers, but it seems much faster just circling Arathi Highlands, than running SM. I found maybe 3 nodes (2 in cathedral), plus some fadeleaf in there, even after resetting once.

Got a stack in Arathi in like 15 minutes of just random flying.

Arathi Highlands is so the way to go. I farmed for my lowbie mage on a flyer and with gathermate, I know know exactly where to go on her so she can farm it on her own instead of aimlessly riding around on the ground mount.

If you go into fortress (sorry, forgot what it was) I even got the grave moss to spawn several times as well.

yep, SM isnt a bad place for Goldthorn, its just you are limited for five resets, i got 7 gold thorns in total, considering time spent flying there, than geting to trisfal glades, than instace itself, its hard tell is it really worth it.
But then again, its hard to find any other area where you can get a lot of them,, especialy for alchemy, i need loads of them.
if anyone still going to SM for that dont forget you need to go to cathedral part for goldthorn.
P.s. the graveyard part gives you few grave moss, so if you are alchemist you might whant that as well, cause its quite rare.

5 runs in SM Cath and the combination Arathi/Hinterlands both yield 10 nodes and both take 10 minutes for a lvl60+ with flying mount.

The advantage of SM Cath is that you cannot run into competition and that you don't need to know your way. And you will get 5 nodes of Liferoot as a bonus.
After doing it 5 times you will have to wait 1 hour before you can do another 5 runs, though.

The above is no longer true in MoP.

In Arathi/Hinterlands you won't have to wait that long between rounds. And you can do it at lower levels, but of course it will take much longer than 10 minutes when done on land mounts.

The routes: after arriving at Refuge Pointe, fly east, then go around Hammerfall along the mountain range until you are back at RP. Then check the short road west of RP and fly through the tunnel to the Hinterlands. There the route is a little more complicated: fly northeast first until you are east of the Lodge; from there, visit all the prominent sites on the map east of the lodge up to Razortalon's little hill. That way you should find 5 nodes in Arathi and 5 in Hinterlands, all within 10 minutes.

Arathi is not the place to go. I play on a very low population server. I have repeatedly flown around arathi to try and guage how much Goldthorn there is in this location.

The stats are pathetic, why people are harping on about this zone, compared to BETTER places like the Hinterlands is beyond my ability to understand.

In the time I did a circuit in Arathi I had 4 nodes...by the time I circuited Hinterlands I had 16 Nodes...bare in mind I play on a very low population server, where people herbing is pretty much non existent at this stage.

Went to SM, and again it's really not as good as it once was, when there where no 5 per hour caps.

You really are better off, just waiting until night, maybe a little beyond midnight and then blitzing the area..respawn rate is shockingly slow...around 35+ mins and possibly longer.

SM Cathedral as a standalone zone is gone with panda: the new zone combines Graveyard with Cathedral. You must kill Thalnos in the Graveyard section before you can even ENTER Cathedral section. The old herb nodes have changed and there is now one dragons teeth node in the GY part and 2 Fadeleaf once you get into the cathedral gardens section (instead of 1 Liferoot node and 2 goldthorn nodes in the gardens as before)

Count this one off your list for easy grinding of Goldthorn, and get used to paying 20g ea in AH :-(

Arathi and Hinterlands are adjacent zones. Farm them both for Goldthorn.

Since Mists, Arathi is useless for goldthorn. I spent over an hour there and did a complete sweep of the area, and nothing. Kingsblood? Yes. Liferoot? Yes. Khadgar's Whisker? Yes. Fadeleaf? Yes. Goldthorn? Nothing. So, I went here, and while there are many comments that still tell you Arathi is by far the best place, that may not be the case anymore.

After scrolling through all the comments, I decided to try the Hinterlands, and this was much better. After 10 minutes, I had already gathered half a stack. It's not extremely fast, but compared to Arathi, I had much better luck here. I also found a few kingsblood and wild steelbloom.

Like BroTimmy, I use the addon Routes (default optimization settings) with Gathermate2 (latest data). My (level 90) flying speed is 220%.At the time when I wrote this: Arathi Highlands has 71 spawn points, all of which I could see in a route that is 8875 yards long. That averages out to 125 yards between spawn points. My first circuit gathered 14 Goldthorn, while my second circuit gathered 9 Goldthorn. That works out to a circuit that gathered 1 Goldthorn every 772 yards. Line of Sight and flying conditions are 'excellent' (very few trees). The Hinterlands has 52 spawn points, all of which can be seen in a route that is 4663 yard long. That averages out to 90 yards between spawn points. My first circuit gathered 10 Goldthorn, while my second circuit gathered 7 Goldthorn. That works out to a circuit that gathered 1 Goldthorn every 549 yards, on average. Line of Sight and flying conditions are 'moderate' (many trees, but tends to spawn on small hills in small clearings). Dustwallow Marsh has 63 spawn points, all of which I could see in a route that is 10605 yards long.That averages out to 168 yards between spawn points. My first circuit gathered 17 Goldthorn, while my second circuit gathered 6 Goldthorn. That works out to a circuit that gathered 1 Goldthorn every 922 yards, on average. Line of Sight and flying conditions are 'poor' (many trees, and tends to spawn on hills near cliffs) The Cape of Stranglethorn, Desolace, and Feralas also have Goldthorn, but each only has about 20 spawn points. Based upon the above (admittedly flawed) results, I would tend to favor The Hinterlands until I farm it faster than it respawns (i.e. when the diminishing return is unbearable), and after the Hinterlands 'dries up' I would farm the Arathi Highlands. I would only farm Dustwallow Marsh if I was near to it (nearer than The Hinterlands or Arathi Highlands ).

Still today Goldthorn is a real wall when leveling Classic alchemy. It's a rare herb to find outdoors and will therefore be short in stock on the auction house as well as costing a lot. I even payed 50 g each for a couple of Goldthorns just to be able to continue leveling alchemy. The big issue is that you enter a period during which all trainer recipes need Goldthorn or equally rare materials. This happens after you leave Pozione Inferiore dell'Invisibilità behind you. Here is a short list of a couple of recpies that can help reduce or even remove completly the need for Goldthorns.

Getting Ricetta: Elisir della Forza degli Ogre Ricetta: Elisir Maggiore del Sangue di Troll could really help you, but these are world drops and buying them could be more expensive than just paying for the Goldthorn.

Ricetta: Pozione della Gran Rabbia could also really help and can be picked up for free by the right vendor but it's dependant on Zanna Grande which may also be low in supply and high priced just as Goldthorn.

My absolute favorite item for getting past Golthorn is the Ricetta: Olio del Freddo which tends to be expensive on the auction house put can be picked up for free from the right vendor Bro'kin. This is one of the most important recipes you can get for alchemy leveling. I should also mention Ricetta: Elisir del Potere del Freddo which is very similar it's a seasonal recpie only obtainable during the Vinter Veil Holiday, so the prices and supply may be somewhat shaky. But if you can get your hand on it, it to will be a huge help.

A small note on Bro'kin, he can easly be reached by taking the portal to Dalaran Crater located in the Broken Isle Dalaran. Hord characters can also reach him from Undercity. But make sure you bring a character that isn't hated with Booty Bay, which can be the case if you have done Alt, Ammiraglio!.

And in case you're wondering there's still plenty of incentive to actually level Classic alchemy.

Pozione Inferiore dell'Invisibilità, Olio del Freddo, Tonico dei Titani and a couple more items are actually regents for popular transmog items.
Trasmutazione: Arcanite is very much needed for transmog, Furiatonante, Lama Benedetta del Vento Eterno and Sulfuras, Pugno di Ragnaros
And finaly 300/300 Classic alchemy is also needed for Maestria nella Trasmutazione and the other mastery specializations.

There's a decent amount in swamp of sorrows. Grows on this hills like earthroot or briarthorn theres like 3-5 veins per loop. Didn't realize it was as rare as I'm reading in the comments. Just got 13 goldthorn in about 30 min

Arathi really didn't yield much in terms of Goldthorn. Using Gathermate2 to see all Goldthorn nodes, I was able to get 13 Goldthorn in one pass, but then I circled around for a bit and realized the respawn rate of Goldthorn was remarkably slow. So then I turned my attention to Hinterlands, which turned out to be a great idea! I got loads of Goldthorn, and then I was able to sweep Arathi again, before returning to Hinterlands. My advice is to alternate between these two zones!
