As Archmage Vargoth's Staff is considered a quest item and is left in your inventory after completing the quest chain what will happen to it during a faction transfer? The FAQ was not clear in this case as it is an item that is available to both factions and is not associated with any active quest.

Amazingly, during the Lich King encounter in ICC, you can spread Necrotic Plague to the Image of Archmage Vargoth.

It's been a long standing guild tradition to 'drop your Vargoth' when working on a progression boss, and our Shambler tank happened to have his out. I watched very clearly the plague spread to the Image and then ... poor Vargoth, 5 seconds later he was clutching his chest and falling to the ground.

Go try it, it's awesome.

I can confirm that a Game Master will return this item if requested after completing this questchain. However keep in mind that normally they do not do this so you have to be lucky to have a flexible GM.

I advice to make a ticket each 1-2 weeks and keep asking for it untill you get it...the time between is so they don't get the feeling of spamm to soon.

During the Pre-Cata events, you can pop this guy by a Water elemental rift and you can watch him cower in fear...

Edit: Seems all of the Pre-Cata Elemental Rifts makes this guy get shakey

***Race changers beware.*** This is a quest item and it will be destroyed when you race change - even though the Blizzard faq states only items associated with active quests will be destroyed.

Note: Dartol's Rod of Transformation is destroyed also upon race changing.

You can petition a GM to get the items back, but think twice before race changing if these items are important to you.

Does not work very wall in the Throne of Four winds once Al'Akir is dead. I tried to pop him out for the kill pic of our first kill, and it turns out that despite only being an image of archmage Vargoth, he's still very much affected by gravity.

Poor, poor image of archmage Vargoth. We hardly knew thee.

Today Image of Archmage Vargoth appeared to help me with my Guardian's of Hyjal daily quest, if I remember correctly he's an arcane mage. It reminded me that I need to get his quest summon staff back ASAP.

I was levitating while fishing in the middle of a pond and decided to say hi to Vargoth. When I summoned him, he sank down to the bottom of the pond. I /waved at him and he bolted right up and stayed "levitating" on the water. :)

Not sure if this happened in 4.3.2 or earlier, but he will not make the human laughing sound when you /dance with him. If this is a nerf it's just another example of Blizzard taking away a small part of the game that was enjoyable. The game continues to go downhill with stealth changes like this that are made for no reason.

Sometime between 4.2 and now Blizzard has updated their FAQ to show that the item WILL be destroyed. When I submitted a ticket in OCT-NOV 2011, the FAQ mentioned nothing before or after I went through with the race change until recently. Only that first verse was there, and not the 2nd verse that states completed quests.

Quests which are active in the character's log at the time of the Race Change will be cleared and ALL quest items will be destroyed, including those associated with previously completed quests (ex: Archmage Vargoth's Staff).

Race Change FAQ

When I submitted my ticket after race change in OCT-NOV 2011, they always refused to restore the item. Some people have been lucky with cool GMs, but most have not. So if you have a toon that you had for years, with all kinds of sentimental quest items saved, strongly consider the consequences of race changing. And even though at the time the FAQ was worded erroneously, your items will be deleted and likely not restored.

As a Rogue I can say I've had several hours of fun with this item for a freaking long time, even when Blizzard gave Rogues a "Decoy" via glyphs in MoP, I can say that this item worked and still works far better as a decoy cause it stays in place for almost 120 sec while the glyphed one stays for barely 3-5 sec and is completely unclickable and let me explain why this is a small disadvantage.

The spawned NPC can be a real distraction if macroed with Vanish in the middle of a sudden skirmish, enemy players tend to click on it by mistake, (tested with guildmates several times) and if they never completed the quest chain, the quest log related to it will pop up messing up their gameplay and effectiveness a bit.

Plus it's really amusing to see enemies targeting the NPC and (if alive) walking around of it, most of the times you can clearly see they're wondering what the hell is it or how the hell it got there since I'm fairly sure 90% of players either don't remember the quest chain from Outland or don't know it altogether.

If you're leveling in a crowded area on a PvP realm and you're on a murder rampage dropping this decoy after every kill, players will start to realize that it might be about the same rogue, giving you some sort of personal signature, therefore, certain level of temporary fame and believe me, enemy players who realize this WILL start hunting you "Assassins Creed"'s style. If you're murdering a lowbie or a low hp player with a sudden Ambush and you drop your Vanish and Archmage decoy, most of them will target the NPC wondering what the freaking hell killed them, probably they'll end up checking their logs to see your name on their pwnd butt.

I put some sugar to my Vanish macro like this:

This macro executes both actions at the same time (no double tap/click) and Vanish and the staff have the same 2m CD

This item is pure, priceless, pwnage magic.
For me, is one of the few items that makes my gameplay really amusing sometimes.

I used to have this item mixed with my Vanish on my rogue.
Was hilarious in BGs. The rogue disappears and Vargoth appears.

Subtlety Rogues should note that he is target-able for shadowstep. Which can be useful for section jumping. Keep in mind for placement, that he appears to the front right side of you - unless you are close to and facing a wall: which he then appears behind you; while always facing the direction you were facing. As a result of that, you can not use him for wall/door jumping like other positioned enemy mobs.

If you talk to the Immagine dell'Arcimago Vargoth in your garrison, in addition to the normal patrol dialogue option, you will also see "Is this yours?", if you have either the original Bastone dell'Arcimago Vargoth in your bags or bank, or if you have the Bastone di Scorta dell'Arcimago Vargoth toy in your toybox. Clicking it prompts Vargoth to say the following:

Ah! That old thing. I was so young and naive when I made that staff. Look at that hair! And that nose!

And I can't BELIEVE I ever wore something so atrocious as a hat like that.

You should keep this old staff. The image is from a few years ago, and hasn't quite caught on to current events. May you enjoy the nostalgia of my more youthful visage.

Still in game as of 6.1. I completed the quest chain yesterday to see how it was currently working. I noted the following:

- The staff remained in my bags after the chain was completed.

- If you don't complete the chain, the image of the archmage will have a quest marker above his head when summoned.

- If you abandon a quest during the chain, the staff will disappear from your bags. I was initially worried I had lost it for good, but I was able to get another from Ravandwyr.

- Although the quest text says you receive the staff when completing Il bastone dell'Arcimago, you don't get the physical item in bags until you complete the third quest in the chain, La maledizione della Torre Violacea.
