I have in my gear one Purple gem ("Matches a Blue or Red socket.") and all the others are Red gems ("Matches a Red socket."). When I socketed this meta gem, the requirement text was grey, which would mean it doesn't work. When I changed zone (took portal to IF), however, it turned to white. It's only a display bug.

In other words, this gem will work if you have in your gear at least one more gem that matches a Blue socket (it can match other sockets too) than gems that match a Yellow socket (which also can match other sockets).

It deffenetly works on heals. Free instant cast heal when this procs and holy consentration on my priest not too bad but the 3 second effect is kind of lousy for a priest. Normally no one is going to need a heal within 3 seconds of my last heal. I think they should up it to 15 like the netherwind set bonus considering the cost of this gem.

After Patch 2.0.10 desc says

They ruined the best Meta soket and accualy the only good one for locks... We don't have many instants as mages, and restore mana on spellcast with dark pact means nothing... we can lifetap...
1% Reflect? ... that is only 1%... useless...

if that half time casting would be for a period of time it would be worth something...

Its not useless. With the instant version it was hard to "catch" if was spamming scorch because it would proc by the time i started the next cast of scorch. It wouldnt boost my DPS any because the cast time and the global cool down is the same. So instead of waiting the 1.5 durning the cast i waited for the global cool down.

Now with the 50% cast time, i can have a better chance to "catch" the buff and cast something else like a 1.5 fireball or 3sec pyroblast. Both will actually increase by DPS. So if the cast for scorch starts i have .75 secs to stopcasting and cast something else. So now I when i see it proc i hit my marco that is something like.
/stopspellcast
/cast pyro

However for mages who spam frost bolt or fireball it will nerf dps slightly.

The buff will not be used up on instant cast spells unless they are made instant due to a buff or talent (ie. improved corruption, nightfall proc).

This effect can stack multiple times if it procs off of a natural instant cast spell while you already have an effect. I've only had this happen once but I believe that the second buff was NOT taken when I cast a spell, so you should be able to get off two half cast time spells.

You will have to wait out the global cooldown if the cast time is brought below 1.5 second cast.

Haste effects like the proc off of Quagmirran's Eye (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27683) will stack with this and appear to halve the already lowered cast time. I believe it brought my shadowbolt down to ~1 sec cast time.

This would be a really good meta socket gem to use, but imo the requirement is a little harsh. As a warlock, my items are filled with red and orange (red+yellow) gems and have only one blue gem. I'd need to replace most of my sockets with Radiant Talasites (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24066) and Glowing Nightseyes (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24056), but I'd loose a lot of spell crit and spelldamage. I think Blizzard should change the requirement to something more appealing.

It's still extremely good in PvP. 5% chance means it will proc around once a fight.

From a mage's perspective, a 1.25 frostbolt is amazing. If you're fire, you know how crazy a 1.5 fireball would be.

It's not as crazy as it was, but It's a toss-up between this and 18 stam 5% stun resist for PvP. The stam is probably better for arena, but I'd take the skyfire for everything else.

So, for this gem to work am I required to have any yellow gems socketted at all?

Right now I have only one piece of socketed gear, which is a headpiece. The other gem socket in it is red. So I could put a purple gem in it and have one blue gem toward the requirement, but no other gems. 1 is greater than 0, right? Or is at least one yellow gem required for it to work?

Raiding mages really need to work towards maximizing their +spell hit to 164 spell hit rating, in order to not miss any more than the minimum of 1% on lvl 73(??) bosses. Therefore the Veiled Noble Topaz(red+yellow) and the Great Dawnstone(yellow) are king until you are able to max out. I have 7 yellow or yellow/red gems and only one blue on my engineering helm. If you look at any sort of calculator for determining what increases your dps as a mage the most, you will see that this is true. Therefore, we have to sacrifice way too much on current gear to be able to equip this. Maybe in the future we will be able to get our hands on more gear with innate +spell hit on it, however, to date this is not the case.

there are 2 choices for socketing arena items as a paladin:
1. go for +18heal gems (red) all over the place, since you will rarely get focused first with a high arena rating and you will be able to heal in raids better than with choice 2

2. go for +12 stamina (blue) all over the place, if you don't raid at all or feel like beeing the main target all the time ;)

other things to think about:
choice 1 will leave you with many red sockets making it hard to choose anythig else than http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25897 wich has even more heal, but -2% thread wich you won't really need as a holy paladin -.-

the good thing on this gem for a pala is the HPS when it procs you can heal like crazy even with holy light as a ONE SECOND cast and flash of light beeing 0.75 second cast, almost instant

of course you won't be able to spam it because of the global cooldown, however HL will still be down to 1.5sec (1sec cast time + 0.5 sec remaining global cooldown) wich is still -0.5sec less casting time

along with the scarab trinket from hdz2 this is a really insane possible HPS and that's what counts most if you heal a focus target in a 5on5 match, imho

and since in both pve and raids you will spam either flash of light or holy light or a combination of both all the time anyway this is not only a dps caster meta gem in my eyes ;)

This gem used to be a 2% chance for an instacast spell, like PoM.

This gem was used in the movie Sorrow Hill 9; an elementalist mage was able to pull off some incredible stuff even without the gem's proc.

I saw the movie, and was hoping to get the gem... it's been nerfed quite a bit it seems but it's not completely useless.

The meta gem can be seen procing twice in the video. Once per boss.

Boss one.
Opens with Pyroblast 6 second cast.
Meta procs
9 arcane missles in the next 4.5 seconds (arc missles takes 5 seconds to cast without the meta gem and only drops 5 missles in 5 seconds)

Boss 2
Opens with arc missles
Gets Clearcasting (nice crits)
Gets Clearcasting again this time with the metagem
9 more arcane missles in 4.5 seconds.
Ends with a 6255 Pyroblast to kill the boss.

Drain Life won't consume the proc buff, but it benefits from it!

That means, if the gem procs, you have enough time to cast for example a 2.5sec Drain Life and a 2sec Soul Fire. Or just two 2.5sec Drain Life's. Or maybe a 2.5sec Drain Life and a 7.5sec Drain Soul.

But ssshhh... don't tell it the dev's ! ;-p

I've testet it with more than 10 proc's it always worked!

The best meta for a Shadow Priest. I socketed my Tier 5 Helmet with it.

The beautiful thing about this meta-gem is that it doesnt consume channeled spells, i.e you can fit a maximum of 3 mind flays in 5 seconds. If you time it right and Flay 3 times at 50% the speed you can achieve about 2,000 Mind Flay DPS -- fitting all 3 MFs in is about 80 effective spell damage according to www.shadowpriest.com. Even if you only fit in 2 Flay it's still 50 or so spell damage.

In the 2.2 patch notes the "Focus" buff will be extended to 10 seconds, and will not consume channeled spells (unless they stealth nerf it).

This is my personal choice for PvP gem as a 0/30/31 Mage, sometimes 17/0/44 too depending on mood anyway. Reasons why I like it over stamina & stun resistance here:

1) Proc is very imba for my current spec. If it procs on Frost Nova I can launch a 3Sec pyro + Ice lance which mostly both crit. High burst, which is great for arenas. :)

2) Proc makes Arcane Missiles cast in 2,5sec, you ever hated catching those pole lamers? Nothing funnier than a shitload of damage in 2,5sec and he cant use LoS to avoid it. And when you have shatter, it's about 4000 Dmg (with 750 spelldmg) on a frozen target if all crit.. _in 2,5sec_. Unload your instants on top of that and *flex*

3) 0.75sec sheep, has saved people getting that MS from the warrior I'm supposed to keep CC'd. :)

List could go on longer but I think you're catching the drift, sometimes when you need that extra little kick for something and the meta procs, its good time.

And for me, it's normally from 0 to up to 5 procs in a normal length 3on3 / 5on5 arena matches.

For mages who need to be hit capped, this is not an option seeing as you'll need to socket a fair share of yellow/orange gems. Until you start stacking spell hit on your gear, you'll need to look elsewhere for a metagem.

I have this meta in my Moonkin's http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32480 and it is pretty awesome. Like posted above it procs off buffs and instant casts, and I think it proc'd earlier when I shifted out of moonkin. The only downside is sometimes I miss the fact that I have the buff.
The coolest thing about this gem is that it stacks with the Nature's Grace talent. Depending on luck and the order they proc, a 1.25s star fire and a .5 second Wrath is pretty awesome. If you have reduced HT cast time you can get a 1 second HT.
HT/Starfire- 3sec->meta proc->1.5sec->natures grace-> 1sec
Wrath- 2sec->meta proc->1sec-> NG -> .5sec
While grinding its more likely to get NG to proc then the Meta, but if you have a decent amount of mana regen and little down time you will end up really increasing your dmg output and reduce the time to grind. I also look forward to trying this out in my 5man arena team, where I am lucky enough to be able to stay in moonkin and not worry about healing others.
I raid as a tank and do not have much experience as a moonkin in raids, but in 5 mans even with reduced threat talents I pull off the avg pug tank, with this new toy, I assume I will be taking a few more hits. I and other crit monkeys out there with this will need to be more careful, or let the 4 sec buff that it provides pass more often, although someone up above says they will be increasing the buff to 10secs. Take a competent tank or have another lid to switch out with this one if you have a problem pulling aggro bc of a high crit chance.

I have this stuck in my Justicar Helm and I must say I'm almost 100% satisfied with this over the +26 healing or the 2% chance for +300 mana gem. Paired with Scarab of the Infinite Cycle I can get my Flash of Light spell to fire off at .5 seconds or so and my Holy Lights down to about 1 second (assuming they both proc).

It's perfect for Flash of Light spamming, and best of all if you're in mostly Kara gear (and this could be the same with TK/SSC as well) then it won't require you to break your nice socket bonuses like some of the other pure healer meta gems.

For some reasons bliz loves melee, and isnt too keen on trying new things with casters. All of the unique enchants and gems seem to be on the melee side of things, and now looking back it appears that this was always the case. This gem is the only meta option for dps casters, and as demonstrated in the above posts it sucks and is in no way the automatic choice like relentless earthstorm is for melee.

PreBC crusader was king, and casters were forced to using basic and lackluster weapon enchants, 30 damage, or 22 int.

Now virtually every melee goon with a decent weapon is running around with mongoose, yet we have 40 spellpower or soulfrost which is just repackaged 30 damage.

This gem is just the latest in a long line of crap that casters are forced to eat. I would love to see a reduce threat meta gem that stacks with subtlety and has innate spell damage, then give us easy requirements to meet like relentless earthstorm. We will probably see that when they get around to giving us a spell haste+spell damage proc from a weapon enchant.

For 4 DPS 5vs5 teams which concentrate burst to beginning, I love this gem after the "nerf" since I can rely it to proc right in the beginning when I want it to, rather than proccing 4 times in one game and 0 in the next.

This item now has a new use.... it's the only way for Hunters to tame the new Ghost Wolves summoned in by Grimtotems in Dustwallow (as they die quickly).

I prefer to see this as a healer's choice, who generally has 3+ seconds requiring spells to cast. For any caster dps, besides fire mages (pyro when it procs:), since your usual -not instant- damage spell has less than 3 second casting time, this gem's proc should bring out the gcd problem. I haven't tested it myself yet (I didn't want to spend that much gold to see what happens:) but I wonder if this one also shortens the effect of gcd just as bloodlust does..? That would make a huge difference of course.

Ok, as of this comment, evocation IS affected by this gem: It casts in half the time, same benefits-the ticks just happen faster.

This Gem is totally F***ing fun. I mean really. Of course I am a deep fire mage for raid dps, but i love this thing in pvp also. Getting off a short pyro or maybe a 1.5 fireball is awesome. Its rad. It gets me all excited, like clearcasting does. And I have had this, power of aracnos, (from a kara robe) clearcasting, and spell haste procs all pop at the same time. When you have spell haste gear this thing really gets even cooler. Look, most people playing this game hardcore forget some basic things.

Its a game, and this gem makes the game more fun. Its great in boss fights in 5-25 mans, gets you a pyro in your spell spam rotation, oh and arcane missiles is like a machine gun. Blizzard for ice spec is affected by this, flamestrike is even more an option, even tho that spell is overlooked by many fire mages. for those new 70's arcanist gear and this make flamestrike get off really fast, and thats cool for aoe grinding fire style. Thats all from a mage perspective of course, but this was one of the funnest/coolest things I have found in the game. Just wanted to make sure that aspect wasn't forgotten.

The proc is slightly predictable also, if you haven't cast in a minute, pretty much gonna proc often right after first cast.

this is a really fun gem, gonna be hard to give up, but with spellfire gear and battlecast stuff, it fits in. Ill lose a little +4 anything to keep this in, so socket bonus loss is negligible. anyways im a JC/tailor so resocketing costs me less. Just clarifying my bias- not bragging. Also, for JC's, if you have an alt who is an alchemist, you can make skyfires for pretty much just primals, as you'll have a pantload of lesser gems, and if you've learned how to farm, getting 5 primals of any kind in a couple of hours isn't hard. I make skyfires every cooldown, cut into MSDs, sell em for 250+. Clockwork money maker recipe with an alch alt.

On the 2.4 PTR this Diamond has changed to grant 320 Haste Rating instead of a flat -50% casttime.
320 roughly translates into 20% haste.

It is "rumored" (got no source, sorry :S ) that the cooldown has been eliminated in return, can anyone who's character already arrived gather info about this?

Recent "fake patch notes" were implying that the gem had been changed from:
"Chance to reduce the cast time of your next spell by 50%" into
"Chance to reduce the cast time of your next spell by 20%"
For some reason they just changed the tooltip of this gem, which makes me believe that these "fake patch notes" might actually hold some truth to it.

Currently gives 320 spell haste rating on 2.4 PTR, which amounts to about +20% casting speed. This doesn't appear to be consumed by the next spell cast.

this also affects enchanting speed. so if you're creating a rod for example, make this proc first so you don't have to wait a minute until the rod is created :)

this is also good for warlocks and paladins when you have to get on your mount super fast (if you have this procc'ed from buffs or something)

last i checked it also affects hearth speed.

As of Patch 2.4, the meta gem has either been changed and it is undocumented.

Then the Focus buff procs, it does not disappear after the initial cast, but rather stays on for other casts after the latter. The buff was been reduced to 4 seconds long and the cast time is no longer cut in half but now grants 320 haste for 4 seconds with a 45 second internal cooldown. The meta gems does stack with other haste procs such as Scarab of the Infinite Cycle.

Haven't really decided if this is a buff or nerf (based on personal opinion of course). I'll look more into it.

I predict in 2 more patches having the mystic skyfire gem will actually increase casting time and perhaps debuff you with mortal strike. This poor thing has been nerfed and nerfed and nerfed again.

Reduced the bonus to 17.8% speed on a 3 second buff (sorely hampering utility to arcane mages) that procs once every half minute for an overall damage increase of slightly below 2% IF you're in the best case scenario (Continuous damage dealing, not healing, not soloing). Blizzard has indeed $%^&ed in your coffee.

I am a raid dps fire mage, this gem is useless now. Arcane missiles, a quick pyro in my fireball chain cast, this used to be my single most favorite gem in the game. now its crap. I am keeping the gear, in the hope that they revert to pre 2.4 status. I suspect they wanted to make this a better gem for chain healers who use the 1.5 sec casts. Maybe now with spell haste supposedly affecting GCD this will be better for instant cast spammers like aff locks allowing their PVP macros to be even faster to apply. Basically I see this as taking everyone who WAS using this gem and ruining it so that other classes who wouldn't of used it before or at least as much would use it more. I am SO disappointed in this change, I hope that everyone who had it posts on the wow forums about their discontent. Or is it just me?

I dunno, this was so crappy to log on to. The first time I tried to machine gun arcane missiles while grinding fire elementals I thought it was bugged, I could barely tell the proc was working. This used to be such a fun Gem. Sigh.

Just timed it, and got a procc after 35 seconds. This is from patch 2.4.1.
This includes that you need an avarage of 7 casts to procc it, due to the 15% procc chance.

should be like http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=43338 if you ask me, not exactly, just a 20% cast time reduction (or 320 haste, to keep it in line with 70+ lvling etc) and some mana reduction.

make it work like a charge, internal cooldown that doesnt start untill the charge wears off, with 1 charge only.

I did some spell haste calculations. I can get ~100 spell haste with items alone (Guardian's Ring of Subjugation, Vindicator's Ring of Subjugation, Cloak of Arcane Alacrity, Guardian's Pendant of Subjugation), then another ~30 with gems. This means a total of ~130 spell haste (i think its 134). coupled with season 3 / 4 pieces, my crit will be fine and I'll be machinegunning frostbolts with icy veins + heroic sp trinket + meta gem (each grants 320 spell haste).

The total spell haste I'll have with all my gear and if all procs happen simultaneously is ~774, which will give me a 1.67s frostbolt and a 1s poly. Then, popping IV (now total 1094 spell haste) will give me around a ~1.47 second frostbolt, and a .8s poly.

I want to use this gem along with Quagmirran's Eye. Through the ages, the gem has been buffed, nerfed, rebalanced and so on.

Right now, would the proc of this gem stack with Quagmirran's Eye and Icy Veins?

Okay, so I think it is time to give a little history on this device and it's application for mage PvP. Back in the day, as we all know, pushback on spellcasts had no cap and was very irritating for casters. Back then, a powerful application of this gem was in conjunction with Arcane Missiles. Why use this expensive and relatively low damage ability with your beefy haste proc? Because you could achieve 5 pushbacks in a 2.5 second cast. It would literally take out a cast while dealing damage and looking awesome at the same time. It was the TBC version of Missile Barrage. Sadly the days of heavy pushback are gone, and this gem turns into a sporadic DPS buff, but any mage who PvPed back in the time of this method will always have the fond memories of knocking a shadow bolt back 5 times while dealing 2k damage with style.

I finally found someone who were able to make me one of these. I was very keen to try it and was very happy when I discovered someone had it.

However the description is not right. The proc gives 320 haste -yes, but it does not last 6 seconds, sadly it only last 4 seconds, which makes this gem even less desirable. For a raid spec this could maybe be handy, but not sure if it is better than the WotLK metas. As for pvp I'm sure you could be good at taking the advantages of the proc, but when you only have a 4 secs time, it's very hard to take any advantage of it at all :-/

This is by far the most powerful meta gem for the 60-64 and 65-69 brackets when you have acess to the meta gem socketable helms. This averages 28-32% spell haste during those levels. Primo Twink gem, though very difficult to obtain, finally in MoP 5.2 we will see this gem again as a Legendary Meta gem with about the same haste bonus.

This gem is being returned at level 90 as a legendary gem, with the same effect. It will be much easier to get the new legendary meta gem than to try and find someone with this extinct recipe!
