Oils count as a temporary enchant on your weapon and the buff will persist through death.

You always get full bang for your buck with wizard oils.

Too bad they only allow 5 uses per bag slot with these.

I can confirm that the 'required level' on this oils is based on the ilevel of the weapon u're putting the temporary item buff on, and not on the required level to use the item. There is no way to tell the ilvl of an item in game without using an addon.

Really good recipe for leveling, went from 340-359 with 19 oils. Even at green I still got a skillup every time.

there are 3 different ways to buff your spell power, temporary Weapon Enchant buff (this item, +42)... battle/guardian elixir (Flask of Supreme Power, +70) and Well Fed (Requires cooking known by you, a friend, or someone on your server liking to AH cooked items... for +23)

all in all, you get 135 spell, quite essentially it all persists though death, since you can probably buy the items for less than 1g each.

This stuff is so cheap, 5-7g on my bad server, that it's very worth it to always use some as any caster or even a leveling one, you can use it from 58 onwards, so it'll be a great boost when you hit Outlands with your crappy green gear.

I have a bank full of oils and nightmare vine, the oils I created leveling my enchanting, the nightmare vine, I stockpiled - since I loved the oil so much.

I once opened a ticket because the oil wasn't working - didn't receive any worthwhile response, but the oil started working again after that - for a while. Once I changed weapons, it stopped again. I tried opening a new ticket - but got No positive action.

QQ I know, but I what I would really appreciate is for Blizzard to put a specific description of the limitation of the Oil into the enchanter spell used to create the Oil - so all would be able to really know when it would work. Even something as mundane as "May not have an effect on very high level items" would suffice

At the release of Lich King, temporary weapon enhancements (oils & stones) worked on items all the way to those requiring level 80 (I applied it to Totemic Purification Rod with no problems), this was changed by Blizzard within weeks of release. After much experimenting I found that (at version 3.0.9) the current cut off for using these is any weapon with item value of 162 (as rated in the Armory). Any weapon at or above 166 will alert the user that the attempt failed but will not consume the object. I was able to apply oil to a Levitating Dagger (BOE green) which requires level 75 to use.

This item doesn't work on the Heirloom staff no matter what character my spellcaster was. It will always say: Target is to low level.

Yeah, right, it REALLY takes away from rogues and warlocks..... especially since their enchants are better.... and how do they figure it "only helps certain classes"?

Since more classes have weapon buffs now, these items only help the classes that don't. This also takes away from the benefit of the class specific buffs. That's why Blizzard is phasing out these items.

Wizard oil was originally added because blacksmiths could make sharpening stones and weightstones, but there was no caster equivalent. Class specific weapon buffs weren't as prevalent back then: warlocks didn't have them, alliance didn't have shaman.

The game has changed so Blizzard had to make this change. Boo hoo, move on. Lower level characters can still use these items.

This is correct. However, they have made one mistake. As of 12/31/08, the counterweights still work on high level blunt weapons. I imagine this will be "corrected" in a future patch.

Counterweight or weightstone? Iron Counterweights aren't weapon buffs, they take the place of enchants. Wizard oil does not take the place of an enchant.

So Blizzard removes temporary weapon enhancements (oils & stones) because according to them it takes away the uniqueness of certain classes.

Sharpening Stones and also Wizard Oils have been discontinued. While they were something nice to use once in a while for most people for many raid guilds they were simply another burden to the cost of raiding. They also caused some issues in that they only helped certain classes and took away some of the uniqueness of other classes who were able to imbue their weapons with temporary enchants such as rogues and warlocks.

Only to give leatherworkers the ability to give Blessing Of Kings (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49633) and Mark Of The Wild (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49634)? All i got to say is LOL.

This item now works on heirloom weapons after patch 4.2.
I was able to successfully apply it to Dignified Headmaster's Charge when my character was level 72. Few days earlier in patch 4.1 with a level 68 character it did not work.

In my opinion, you should always use items like these. Weapon oil, sharpening stones etc. They are extremely easy to make, and reasonably cheap on the auction house, and they give such an extreme boost.

it's December 2023- this item requires character level 24 to use, and cannot be used on item level 51 or higher.
The minimum item level for heirlooms or dungeon drops or satchel items seems to be at the lowest, item level 54.
Given that information, this item appears do be unusable on soulbound gear with current squish levels.
Someone please correct me if wrong.
