During the wintery season, these had a chance to drop off any dungeon bosses, you could tell before hand if they were going to drop due to the mob wearing the hat.

They were later turned into a 'Uncommon' item from a 'Common' item in later patches due to random players taking the hat and the rest of the party had a unfair advantage.

There has been reports of the item dropping off any mob in the world.

Probably it only drops now off BC bosses. And you cannot solo BRD on lvl70 and take your hat :(

Please note, that it specifically says that the hats only drop from bosses Dec. 25th to Jan.2nd. So, farming old or new world bosses won't likely net you a hat, until the 25th.

I ran Scholo, and the hat didnt drop. So either they made it so, where it drops at another time, or doesnt drop at all, since people dont run the Azeroth Instances anymore.

This was on my warrior Darowen, on Durotan. The 2nd boss in Mech, was wearing one and I totally ninjaed it.(was with guildies LOL, they understand) Waited three yrs(and many people before BC came out) throwing hissy fits for a xmas hat.

Dropped yesterday (12/16/07) off Grand Warlock Nethekurse by frost mage and disc priest in normal difficulty (Archimonde-EU server). Shattered Halls is definitely the best instance to get it, since you only have to kill the first boss. Can be easily done with 3 people and hardly with 2 like priest/mage.

The red and green winter hats were world drops last year during Winter Veil. I know, because I got one in Searing Gorge. They are BoP: you cannot trade or sell them. I assume they are world drops again this year, as many people have posted that they received a red or green winter hat as a world drop.

I posted before with a European link that showed the hats to drop from old world bosses, but only on certain dates.

Now, it seems that won't be the case. Either you get a world drop hat, or you need to be in the mid 60's to have access to the instances of the bosses who drop the hats.

Sad, really, since Blizzard could have allowed old world bosses to drop the hats, giving people who have never gone to those instances to see them. Instead, its another run of the same old instance. But I digress.

By making it so they only drop off the Outland bosses, isn't that making it a little bit unfair for people who don't have Burning Crusade? I mean, I'm sure there aren't that many people who don't have it yet, but to have to rely on the world drop part of it is a little bit mean.

WOOT! After a long farming adventure I finally got one to drop!

After 5000 Scarlet Workers, 3000 Twilight Guys, 5 BRD clears, etc... Not to mention how much crap I killed last year and didn't get one to drop.

I go back and decide to clear out The Deadmines a few rounds and got one off a Defias Strip Miner on the second clear.

So YES it can be done. I was level 70 the mob level 19.

Its annoying as these are bind when picked up. :( so my bank cant have one. I have the whole other set (boots and clothes) but i cant run her through an instance because she is only level 1.
The only thing possible is to level her to 6 and kill the mobs that have small chance to drop it.

Its also confirmed that the highest drop rate is in {20-29} near the entrance to desolace / ashenvale {humanoids}

On alliance side it drops extreme often near the entrance to Loch modan and in dun morgh.

even if so; its still a world drop and no one can specified tell you where it can drops, this down here is just some examples:

near the entrance to desolace: Flying harpys.

Ashenvale: kill the stealthing night elfs near the horde base camp from The barrens.

Loch modan: kill the ogres {Blink, even ogres celebrates christmas ;).....}.

Dun morgh: The elite near you buy rams. Ops: {Level 11/12 elite}.

This is just TIP, i had it dropped atleast 20-30 times from this.

I can confirm that Mage Lord Urom in Occulus (we only did it on heroic mode, but I assume he also drops it in normal mode) drops a Green Winter Hat.

Yesterday, just killed Grand Magus Telestra at The Nexus (Regular) 4 times, and she droped 1 green hat each time. It looks like a 100% drop rate.

Solo'ed as a Blood DK tank spec - normal mode for green xmas hat.

the first couple pulls in this instance with the whelps can be tough just use your cool downs properly. The only other tough part Soloing this was the Constructs, 3 mages and snowflake adds basically pop your AoD on the first pull and burn one down quick as possible and using your interrupts and strangulate properly. When you get to the 2nd pull just DG one of the mages + strangulate and kite him back as far as you can and LoS the other mages while kiting, after that the rest are easy just kite the rest of the construct + mage groups.

No need for Tips on the bosses as long as you know the fights its cake!

hope this helps anyone farming for the Hats, Nexus was a joke as well did that in my dps gear + tank spec.

Drahga Shadowburner, the second last boss in Grim Batol in Twilight Highlands just dropped on of these Green Winter Hats for us. Not sure what kind of drop rate it is as it was my first run though the dungeon but if WotLK was anything to go by its a 100% drop rate from bosses.

Not sure as of yet if the "old" WotLK bosses have been mugged for their christmas hats by the big bullies from Cataclysm yet but I will update when I find out. Will also post the new location of red hats if I find them before someone else posts.

Seems to be a lot of confusion about the hats this year (post Cataclysm 2010).
Here is my experience, disregard the "dates" in the Blizzard statement everyone is throwing around, as it seems to be inaccurate.

Northrend Dungeons:
Grand Magus Telestra in The Nexus: Red Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!
Jedoga Shadowseeker in Ahn'Kahet: The Old Kingdom: Red Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!
Mage-Lord Urom in The Oculus: Green Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!

Cataclysm Dungeons:
Lord Godfrey in Shadowfang Keep: Green Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 3% - 14% Approximate DROP!
Drahga Shadowburner in Grim Batol: Green Winter Hat

As always your mileage may vary as far as the NORMAL MODE drops are concerned, all in all if your REALLY want the hat, run a heroic.
There is of course always the slight less than 1% chance you can loot either of these hats off of any HUMANOID mob in the game.
Don't count on it however.

Please be mindful that Wowhead receives it's data from it's users, so the loot tables of the for-mentioned Bosses can be, and probably are inaccurate to some degree just from not many people looting the hats and uploading the data.
Also, the bosses get looted thousands of times when the holiday even is NOT going on, so if the hat appears on the loot table, the drop percentage is likely horribly inaccurate as well.

Yet another achievement only the highest level players can get first try, guaranteed for crying out loud?
WHY can't you let the normal level runs have a 100% drop rate so players who aren't anywhere near level 80-85 have the same chance as the big boys?

They can get 2 of the 3 winter garb requirements but the hat? NOOO of course not.
Why not make the hats drop in every single instance on normal mode.
This includes RFC, WC, Stocks, Deadmines etc.

Let everyone have the SAME chance for a change...
Is it really so awful a thing to allow a level 10 toon to get an achievement for wearing 3 pieces of clothing?

Come on Blizzard ... lighten up on the NEW players who would really like to be able to achieve some of your World Event achievements.
You dudes are seriously taking a lot of the fun out of ALL the world events by making it impossible to get so many of the achievements unless you're an endgame player.

It's like you completely don't care about anyone under level 80-85...

Soloed HEROIC Occulus at 85 and the hat dropped. I didn't bother trying to get it from one of the Lvl 85 dungeons because (a) others would want it and (b) the queue time for those heroics are about 30 minutes for DPS. In that time I got through to the third boss - Mage Lord Urom and I was guaranteed the hat.

For 2011, it looks like the Normal mode Northrend bosses no longer drop the Winter Hats. I just went through normal mode Old Kingdom and Nexus and neither Jedonga or Telestra dropped hats. I did a quick run through Heroic mode Nexus and saw that Telestra was wearing the hat, though I didn't bother to kill her.

My guess is Blizzard didn't want obtaining these hats to be too trivial. Players in 2010 experienced some challenge in getting the hats, it's only fair for the same to be true for 2011.

Edit: I just remembered that the hats didn't drop on Normal mode WotLK dungeons in 2010, but they did in 08 and 09.

For lower levels:

So I decided to start farming the Red & Green Winter Hats on one of my level 20 characters because I was bored. I did a lot of research and it turns out the only way to get one on a lower level is to farm/kill low level humanoid or undead npcs. As far as I know, all humanoid and undead npcs have relatively an equal chance to drop these hats but the drop rate is very low. But I decided to farm the Murlocs in Elwynn forest simply because the spawn rate is amazing. I'd say farming the Murlocs at Crystal Lake, or the Murlocs at Stone Cairne Lake (on the right side) are the best places to do this. The strategy I used was I kept a level 4 warrior on a different WoW-Client following me. So I didn't have to chase the murlocs, instead the Murlocs came after the level 4 and when they got close I used Thunderclap and killed about 4 at once. Its easy but becareful, the small little murloc islands will be littered with corpses and can be confusing. So its best to take breaks after 10 minutes of farming. Only do this if you're really bored or otherwise I wouldn't advise it.

Here is proof that I got it on my level 20 twink. I went around farming other Humanoids for a while, but decided the murlocs were best. In total I think I must have spent about 5-6 hours of farming in total.

Ignore the weird chat happening in the background. I come from the Moon Guard server so there's always weird chat/stuff going on in Elwynn Forest lol. But my point is: If you want the hat on a lower level toon, farm the murlocs because of the fast spawn rate, take 10 minute breaks so you don't get confused with looting all the corpses (the floor will be covered in corpses), and most importantly... don't give up. Your hat will drop, it just takes time. Lots of time (took about 5 hours for me)

I can confirm the hat still drops (as of patch 5.1) from Signore dei Maghi Urom on heroic difficulty! Tried normal as well, but although he wore the hat, he didn't drop it.

Heroic Oculus is easily soloable for any 85+ nowadays. Probably the easiest way to get your hat if soloing!

If your doing quests in Tirisfal Glades when Feast of Winter Veil is being celebrated do this, you might find it.
1. do Succo di Segugio Oscuro.
2.find the worgen and turn in the quest that you get.
3.get next part of quest but don't turn in after you finish.
4.kill alot of worgens.
eventually it will drop. It might take a while but there easy to kill, so it's a way you can get it if you want.

Just remember...DON'T HAND IN QUEST!

This hat dropped for me today from a Gordok ogre at Dire Maul. I wasn't in the dungeon itself, just doing the quests in the Feralis area. I'm not sure if it was an ogre-mage or one of the other types there, but it shouldn't make a difference.

Confirmed today that Berretto di Grande Inverno Verde has a 100% chance to drop from Signore dei Maghi Urom on 5-man Heroic in Oculus.

Also confirmed today that Berretto di Grande Inverno Rosso has a 100% chance to drop from Gran Magus Telestra on 5-man Heroic in Nexus.

Edit: In case anyone is confused, these are Dungeons, not Raids.
