Two great things about this trinket:

1. You get to swim around looking like a pirhana (or Frenzy, as Blizzard like to call them), which always grabs attention. However, if you jump/surface yourself or perform any action like mining, herbing or casting it boots you back into your natural form.

2. Practically, it comes in extremely handy if you are trying to compete for the Elemental Water patches or underwater Rich Thorium Veins in Azshara (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=7080). The Bay of Storms is a real money maker if you have that advantage.

How to get your hands on this trinket?

You must win the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Extravaganza which is held every Sunday between 2-4pm game time. The first player to catch and hand in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay wins and can choose this or the http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19970. Tastyfish are found in special swirling schools which only spawn during the hours of the competition and have a "shelf life" so you can't just keep 40 in stock and hand them in next week. You will only catch the Tastyfish if you land a cast inside the school, which can take multiple casts. I bind my fishing skill to middle mouse to speed this up a bit.

My advice would be to set your hearthstone in Booty Bay before the competition starts and find yourself a quiet place on the coast, without many competitors. Note that the Tastyfish pools do not spawn on Jaguero Isle.

Then, try and maintain your distance from the other people fishing - don't share a school of fish unless you absolutely have to. Move in the opposite direction from the majority when your schools dry up. Carrot on a stick and other riding speed boots may be useful - increases to fishing skill are not, unless you are under the required level for STV fishing.

It could take many weeks before you are successful, so don't give up! Each time you try you'll get a better feel for where the best locations are.

Druid aquatic form adds 50% swim speed, so there's no reason for a druid to get this trinket, unless he or she just wants to look like a fish.

An extremely handy trinket if you're questing under water. You'll practically never will have to get to the air as your breath will fill up as soon as you activate this trinket. Furthermore, no difficult combinations are required to shift in or out this form as any casting or attacking will do that for you. This is actually an advantage, as you can, for example, cast Charge in this form. By the time your mob is dead, looted and skinned the 5 second CD will be done. Saves you helluva lot time. And, of course - it looks really cool :-)

P.S.
If you're really eager to win - try a day where something important happens IRL. A grand football match, a catholic day, something like that. It actually DOES make a difference. Believe me.

Another tip for winning this is to have a guildmate help you out in finding Tastyfish pools to fish. While you're on one, they run up the coast finding the next pool. If the area is busy, they can even pretend to fish the pool to keep others away (but land the hook just outside or keep re-casting so they don't take anything from it).

I still use this at 70 on my Paladin when grinding Motes of Water from Shimmerscale Eeels and never having to resurface.

Just won this today. It's interesting to note, if you are a rogue, you can stealth and then use this trinket, which will NOT break stealth. Useful for underwater afk :)

Ok, there is a very easy way to get a piece of armor that lets you breath underwater, without having to be a level 20+ Druid, and without having to try time and time again to win. Its called a Deep-Diving Helmet, and you make it with Engineering, but you do need a skill level of 230 to make it, and it is cloth which means any class can use it. It is a lot better than the Hook of the Master Angler, because it gives about 69 armor, 2 +stat bonuses, and you can fight while using it. In fact, the only reason to use Hook of the Master Angler if you are able to make a Deep-Diving Helmet, is if you want to look like a fish, which is pretty trivial to spend so much time or money trying to get it.:)

P.S.: You do need a schematic to learn how to use it.

You don't have to wait till Sunday and compete with others. Can also use it while in combat.

I got this today, it's a lot of fun to use in any pvp situation involving water. It can be used in combat and does not break on damage. So if a warlock tries to dot you and swim away, you can just go fish and run him down. I think a unique trinket beats +15 fishing any day as far as rewards go.

This item is part of the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Competition. Which takes place every Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 Server time.

These are the items that can be won if you are the first person to hand in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Bootybay.
Arcanite Fishing Pole and Hook of the Master Angler.

Once someone has won the fishing competition, you can still hand in your remaining Speckled Tastyfish to Jang in Bootybay. (repeatable quest)

Here's a warning for anyone who wins this trinket, anyone who participated in the competition (Of the opposite faction) will likely expess their hatred towards you (in the form of fireballs, bullets, etc.) if you use this trinket to swim around in their pool of tastyfish

I was one of the earliest people on my server to have this trinket - and indeed it takes a lot of perseverance to get it!

I found it very useful pre-BC, even more useful in Outland, but now with all of the underwater quests in Northrend, this trinket is definitely proving itself as one of the best trinkets in the game for my rogue. Stealthfish for the win!

I even got asked (yet again!) yesterday while doing the underwater quests for the Nalu'ak - "How are you turning into a fish?". This trinket might be blue but to me it's epic!

I won the contest acouple days ago, and I took this. I'm glad I did because I am using it in Northerend. It makes you move a little faster, and it's fun. :) I also like hanging out in Dalaran in the fishing hole and turning into a fish there.

I do believe they changed the skin for the fish in patch 3.0.8

It might be my imagination as well, but I think they might have increased the swim speed bonus as well. Either that, or they made the fish smaller and that's what's making me think he's swimming faster.

3.0.8: this trinket has undergone a few undocumented changes:
The fish form is now much smaller
The bonus swim speed has increased to 35%

Patch ? (in between 0.8 and 1.2) undocumented change
You can now swim on the surface of the water (jumping cancells the buff)

Patch 3.1.2 undocumented change:
You can now attack melee while in fish form, others actions like looting can still be performed.

Has anyone noticed that for a while you could swim on the surface, visibly, without breaking fish form?

I considered that a buff because for example hanging out at the summon stone for ssc you would be very noticeable when you could swim on the surface.

Now it's back to the old way where you can't really swim on the surface anymore. Yeah, I love the buffs this thing got but I'd trade it all in to be able to swim on the surface visibly again. Surprising people with this trinket is the best part.

Also, after 3.1 it seems you cannot be in Shadow Form (Priest) anymore while being a fish at the same time. It was kinda disappointing that I cannot be the Shadow Frenzy anymore. Well... the speed increase is a plus, I must admit. :)

Interesting tidbit....

It's been just around 200 weeks since the event was introduced - In other words, there have been 200 extravaganzas so far. So on any given server, there are a maximum of 200 characters (!) who have won the event. Also, in classic WoW the vast majority of people chose the fishing rod over the trinket, because it gave the most +fishing skill in the game. Averaging it over classic, TBC and WotLK, i'd wager only 70-80 characters have the trinket on any given server, of which around half (being generous here) would have quit the game by now.

It's very probably one of the rarer items in the game. I'm pretty sure i saw more people dual-wielding the warglaives by now, since Illidan is so easy to kill at 80 (there were more than enough people dual wielding them even before WotLK)

So you should be glad you got one ^^

Don't know when it happened but the fish is now a different color, at least in northrend. Its a aqua, gold, and orange instead of the purple and pink color shown in the other screenshots. Submitted a new screenshot, just waiting on its approval for it to show up.

This trinket is rather crappy solely due to the fact that it has a 30-second cooldown upon equipping. Whenever you dip into water, you usually go "ah damn, no point in equipping it now, I'll be out of water soon". The only real use for it is deliberately exploring water areas, such as swimming around the old continents and such.

Movement speed with the fish buff is 97% of normal run speed on land.

I won this on my shaman at level 45. Water walking helps enormously. Booty Bay was full of players who had participated, and you can bet higher levels of the other faction were following me around. I made the mistake of testing it in the bay.

Guys, besides all the philosophy i think you're forgetting something essential here,namely:

it turns you into a frikkin awesome fish and you can swim around in lakes and stuff, how many items do you know that can do that ?
it's super awesome to see everyone stare at you in fish form, it is very useful in some situations i admit but it's really more for FUN !
this is even better than the turtle mount ( oh why won't you drop for me :( )

Just wanted to say that ive won the STV fishing event, i took this reward and its awesome even tho its not as fast as the angry druid form seal.
i play on highly populated Silvermoon EU (full) and as a lvl 53 warrior ive made all the lvl 80 @#$%ed for winning the event with such a low lvl.
ive fished on Vile reef near that little troll island with 5 other guys and millions of them in booty bay.
YES u can do this even tho ur lowbie on highly populated server, what u need is a epic land mount, water walking pots and hearthstone in booty bay :)

You can use this trinket in lava and the damage will not break your fish form. Not a huge deal, but I use it a lot taking the short cut to Molten Core.

As of 4.0.6 Do not enter portal or Direbrew's Remote while you are a fish. You will remain Pacified until you can properly remove Master Angler buff such as submerge yourself into water again, use the trinklet, and remove it or get out of the water. Which would be hard to do if you're in BRD...

You can use Vrykul Drinking Horn while the effect from this trinket is active.

It turns you into a big fish, but you don't get a helmet.

I made a list of gimmick items which you can use to transform your character into a different form or race or even gender to play around with. Not certain when this became the case, but it appears that this is now an "override" form for shapeshifts (similar to Leyara's Locket). Druids can be in bear, cat, travel, moonkin, tree of life, or (and this is the cool bit) aquatic form! Yes, you can swim at max glyphed speed while wearing the appearance of the fish. Looks really cool cruising around in Vashj'ir!

One thing that has not yet been mentioned: you can gather herbs while in fish form!

This makes the trinket amazingly useful for non-druid herbalists farming Tol Barad for Azshara's Veil.

Not sure exactly when it happened but there is no longer a cooldown when equipping the trinket. This makes the trinket a lot more user friendly as you no longer have to wait 30 seconds to get the swim benefits.
