Before BC and LK this stone was and still is used for Molten Core access. When you turn in the quest Attunement to the Core is cast on you to allow you to enter.

Ragnaros is the final boss in Molten Core, the original 40-man dungeon (pre-BC) crawl-style raid instance. He drops all of the "Tier 2" armor set leggings, as well as several other highly-sought items.

Ragnaros in Burning Crusade was about a 10-15 man easy run.

In Lich King Ragnaros is rumored to be soloed by a highly geared (T7.5+) 80. <Holy Paladin Probally xD>

I can't believe nobody has posted how to find this!

Go to the Grim Guzzler (the bar) in BRD. I used my remote. Kill patrons, or get drunk or w.e. to get the back door open. Go through it, drop down to the Anvil and kill the fire boss (or not), drop down again into the lava and swim. Swim for a few mins until you reach a way out. Go the the mob of three fire elementals, kill them, and kill the next set of three as well. Quest item on your left at entrance to MC.

Second floor, go to the place that says Molten Core. Not that hard guys....

I bypassed the Grim Guzzler altogether (though I wasnt even sure how to get in, in the first place. I was wandering through near the domiciles and saw a Dark Iron Mole that was clickable. It gives two options a) Go to the Entrance, or b) Go just past the Grim Guzzler. I chose b). It takes you right outside the back door of the Grim Guzzler, which remains locked.

Nearby is the Chamber of Enchantment which contains a guy who looks a bit like a Naga. I bypassed him and jumped into the lava, not the greatest move, but if you notice where you need to go, at level 69, you will definitely not die, only lose maybe 1200 health at the most, so even a level 56 should have no problem if you have stamina gear.

As I am a rogue, I should have merely stealthed past all the fire elementals as they only drop their typical: Core of Elements, Heart of Fire, Flaming Pitch and Coal.

So swim to the ramp under the little bridgeway, go past the 3 elementals guarding one side, then past about 4 to 5 elementals on the opposite side. There is a stalagmite that you click on to give you the core fragment. It is right before the Molten Core instance. Frankly not sure how a single soloed Molten Core, as it said "You must be in a raid to enter" when I attempted the instance. Perhaps it is only because I hadnt yet attuned my Core Fragment, but that is not what the warning said...

Anyway, just a different option from the above. The raid group I was in in the first place floundered and although composed of mostly 85s had no clue what they were doing and the raid leader was angry little prickle. Left THAT guild in a heartbeat.

Made an account just for the sake of this post..
Instead of hearthing home and flying back to the guy, or run MC in a difficult way, just enter the raid when you have obtained the core, and exit the raid again, you will be standing on top of Lothos Riftwalker to turn in quest :)

The core fragment is located at 69, 36 inside BRD right outside the entrance to Molten Core.

The length of time it takes to run the dungeon to find this item is dependent on your knowledge of Wow, familiarity with this Zone, level/type of toon, gear, etc. I ended up here because I was quest grinding for achievements using my level 90 Demonology Warlock (original Wow toon). It should have taken about 5-10 minutes, instead I spent a lot of time digging through comments to find this item's location. Thanks to Steinberg5 for coords comment.

Ok, so rather than Lothos Riftwaker teleporting you to MC instance, take the doorway to his left into the Grinding Quarry. Run through the quarry, the Masonary and go into the BRD/Detention Block instance. Take the Abandoned Mole Machine to 'just outside Grim Guzzler'. Go through the Chamber of Enchantment, through the Mold Foundry, clear out the 7 Dwarves in the Summoners' Tomb (talk to Doom'rel to start this clear) to open the door leading to the Lyceum. Turn right just through the door and over the bridge with the Fireguards. The glittery stalactite containing the fragment is on the left side of the instance to MC. Collect fragment, run through the MC instance and then then back out again and tahdah, you'll pop out on top of Lothos! DING, you're done.

Guys, guys! This is what you have to do to get the core fragment without swimming in lava! Just before you enter the Lyceum, there is a guard of the Morgan's Militia at the top of the stairs. Facing the stairs, turn right and you will see a corridor with some flame guards. This is the land route to the core fragment. Just keep going until you are before the entrance to the Molten Core Dungeon and the core fragment is in the pillar to the right!
