Sale Salmastros are used as a turn in to Blixthraz Blastcharge (Horde) or Binny Sprigspinner (Alliance) during the battle between Dookthar the Destroyer and Arachni, mechanical elites. This event occurs during the assault in Vol'dun and is located on the bridge in Bonetrail Gulch. There is a related quest for this, Battle Bots, but this item can be turned in 10 at a time during the fight to energize your faction's mech.

Important note: I had completed Battle Bots on a Horde character but not an Alliance one, so I went to the battle (again, the quest was not up today). It seems completion of this quest is required to be able to collect and turn in
Sale Salmastro.

Appears to drop even when an incursion is not active, so feel free to delete it from your bags or wait for it to disappear on its own. Serves no other purpose and can't be sold.

Is there a level limit to looting and getting the salt? My lower level horde character at 112 was not able to get any compared to my 120 main.

Whilst it takes up a bag slot I'd suggest hanging on to these when they drop if you are interested in getting the pets Ragno Meccanico Ricostruito or Gorilla Robot Ricostruito. Handing these in can help your side's bot win so if you save them up you can do multiple hand-ins per fight. Could be the difference in you getting a chance to loot the components to make the pet if you are on an unbalanced server as your side's bot has to win for you to be able to loot the chest.

Edit 29th Jul - Spent 25 minutes killing Krolusk Spinasalina in the area today on a horde toon whilst incursion was on and not one salt dropped for me. Either it's bugged for horde players atm or they've severely nerfed the drop rate quietly during a patch. I noticed when targeting the spider bot that alliance players must be getting them to hand in (power meter went up as alliance toons stood next to their hand-in npc. Have submitted bug report.
On running the incursion on other Horde toons I've found the salts do drop for them, just not for my Nightborne or Highmountain toons. Not the first time I've come across bugs with allied races (Argent Tournament in Icecrown comes to mind).

To get the salt to drop you need to have done the Incursion quest, where you are tasked to collect 10 of these briny salts. After hand-in you can then continue to collect more. It seems to be a secret flag for the character. After that hail the two chars without salt first. They ask you to get salt and then start collecting. I hailed the gnome with 100 salts in the bag and she ate them all, without increasing the energy of the spider!
