The food buff lasts 5 minutes and breaks on damage. At least you can use abilities while under it's effects, I guess.

I understand this is just meant for fun but breaking on damage and only lasting 5 mins makes this seem... extra pointless. Maybe it's involved in some other achievement or something interesting?

Just ate one, it did not break on fall damage, however, it did break when I went through a portal.

If you came here because of the Assaggiatore di salsicce achievement and went straight to the comments rather than the other tabs, the main bit of information you're looking for is this:

Comes from a cooking recipe, requiring Kul Tiran skill level 50 to make
Recipe drops from Raal l'Ingordo in the Waycrest Manor dungeon at a rather poor rate, but is NOT Bind on Pickup and can sometimes be found on the auction house
The sausage itself is also not Bind on Pickup and can sometimes be found on the auction house
