I thought it'd be fun to try drinking it instead of just handing it back to Nathanos but Blightcaller's Easy Death is only usable in Stormwind City. Looks like he no longer wants to let me go.

So dying and corpse running is actually cannonical now? I mean there was the cata quests with Azuregos, but still I sort of took that as a joke.

This item can be kept after completing the quest by destroying it (note that this abandons the quest first time) and restoring it after you completed the quest.
Sadly when I tried using it after the quest I got the message "You need to be in Stormwind City."

As cmdrnate mentioned in the comments here: "If you have already done the whole Stormwind extraction scenario, don't pick up the potion and talk to Nathanos to skip right to the intro to Zaldalar city.".
