The proc will rarely happen, and even if it does, it's barely any armor. Plus it only affects party members. Just plain bad. If you get one, DE it or sell to someone who thinks it's useful.

While this is without a doubt the most useless epic in the game, it's an exceptionally rare drop and people will actually pay good money just to say that they have one. It's that infamous.

It's not a very good item, so don't waste money on it. Also, reference to WC3, an item of the same name provided Devotion Aura.

Essence of the Pure Flame is, mind you, pretty bad. But it in aoe tanking situations - which it was I imagine designed for - it offers a robust increase to your outgoing dps to all those mobs you're picking up. And that is pretty respectable.

Now, THIS thing? THIS thing is horrible. It's just awful. It was awful at 60 and it was awful at 58. It's awful at 45. If this dropped off a mob in Wailing Caverns when you were level 17 and being run through by a higher level character, you would equip it ONLY because you don't have trinkets at that level, and it would STILL SUCK.

For one thing, passive armor trinkets are generally kinda iffy. They were useful while tanking things like Patchwerk, where a mob is landing huge hits on you nonstop that are pure physical, and they were also useful to bear druids. Well, they still are useful to bear druids, but there's not too many patchwerkesque fights out there. Granted I'm not saying there isn't, I'm just saying I can't think of any off the top of my head. Now, this would still suck for patchwerk. 250 armor? That's not really a whole ton. I mean it's useful bonus, but ONLY if it's up ALL THE TIME. The minute armor isn't up all the time, you can start considering it as divided by the amount of time it isn't up. Now, most mobs hit you something like 2-3 times every five seconds, or we'll say 2.5 every 5 x 12, or 30 hits a minute. So you can probably expect to crack the buff, oh, I dunno, once every three minutes. That means it will be up about one-sixth of the time, so we can divide 250 by six.

Or a passive armor bonus of ~41.6. Wow. Now that there is an epic item. Epic SUCK. Granted it does effect your entire party, but how often is everyone in your party taking hits? Not especially often.

The best thing you could ever do with thing is shown right up in the top corner. Buyout 750g. Yep. It's very rare, so it gets sold to collectors who want those oddball items that never drop. This is sort of like an artifact from a lost age, except instead of being a fascinating relic of lost times, it's god awful and so terrible you'd never hear the end of it if you wore it.

Actually, this used to be the ultimate trinket for flag carriers in WSG. The reason is that it had a bug where it would disconnect players who attacked someone wearing it.

So you would see the flag carrier going through with the flag and everyone would focus fire him. Then all of a sudden those attackers would start disconnecting.

See, all this criticism is fine and dandy, but no-one has said how it drops.

It's a World Drop, with about a 0.02% chance, at best, amongst level 55+ elite mobs.

And I find this item, along with Essence of the Pure Flame, to be VERY handy while farming Deadmines...

Back in Warcraft III there was an item with the same name and icon. It gave your hero a lesser replica of the Paladin's Devotion aura which could translate into 5-6% damage reduction for all nearby friendly units.
I guess this item is reffered as "epic" in WoW just because it is an old part of the Warcraft universe, not due to its ...great quality.

Whilst having the reputation of being the worst item in the game, this item is very important lore-wise. The horn references to the old days of Stormwind before it was destroyed at the end of the First War. The Lion being the mascot of the kingdom of Stormwind for generations. (Although, oddly enough, lions aren't indigenious creatures to the Stormwind. Nowhere in Elwynn, Westfall, Redridge, or Duskwood are their lions. Plenty of wolves, but no lions.)
Also this horn is found in the caverns of Stonetalon Peak in the Warcraft 3 Mission: The Oracle. During the Horde Campaign, the horn is found by Cairne Bloodhoof, leader of the now united tauren tribes and patron of the Horde city: Thunder Bluff.
Cairne locates the horn in a forest of mushrooms, if you, the player, decide to wait on the thunder lizard looking beast to eat his way through the forest of shrooms. How it got into the deep caves of Stonetalon Peak is beyond me. The stats for the horn in Warcraft 3 were passive, not a chance on hit. Basically it was a trinket that allowed the hero character, Thrall, to have his own aura. If you decide to give the horn to Thrall since Cairne his own "endurance" aura.
Why'd Blizz make an item from Warcraft 3 so useless is beyond me. But then again in Frozen Throne the 2-hander axe Killmaim and the one-hander axe Serathil were classified as artifact weapons, so I can see how Blizz had to change a few things.
I know its rather useless info on the item itself when it comes to WoW but hopefully lore-cravers and Warcraft 3 fans will enjoy it.

I had always hoped they would improve this item, as they iterated through, say, Hand of Edward the Odd, but I suppose that was due to that item being originally OP and then, later, their efforts to bring all haste effects in line. But in terms of item names, this trinket had SO much potential, lost on a passive proc (should be active, it's a HORN) that properly affects the party but that raises a stat that only the tank would generally need. Ugh, so sad.

I can think of a use for this trinket: One is being run through ramparts by a paladin that has just bubbled, one is not on the aggro list and one is the furthest party member from Gargolmar. 1/100 times one will provide a buff that'll help the pally running one through and anyone that accidentally takes aggro.

How about: one uses taunt or some other non-damaging spell on a critter while being power levelled through an instance? The critter will be able to proc the trinket, but will do insignificant damage otherwise.

Prices for this item have dropped significantly since the Garrison's Salvage Yard.

Since they are now obtainable from Grossa Cassa di Riciclaggio they've dropped from around 20k on my server to about 5k.
