This quest can be completed on LFR unlike the EN cosmetics quest.

I got this from killing Helya on heroic mode. Haven't finished the quest yet, only have 174/1000 soul fragments but already have the whole set unlocked. The quest and heroic kills must drop different colors but I can't attest to this until someone finishes the quest. I'll upload a picture of the heroic kill set for comparision.

I got this as a drop from Odyn in LFR. Sounds like it can drop from any of the 3 bosses on any difficulty.

There are four recolours of each ToV armour set. The normal mode variant is the reward for Prova del Valore: L'armata perduta, while the other three colour variants are dropped from bosses in LFR, heroic, and mythic modes.

Prova del Valore: L'armata perduta can be completed on any difficulty.

LFR variant: Rare drop from any boss in LFR difficulty. (purple/gold)
Normal variant: Quest reward. (teal/brown)
Heroic variant: Rare drop from any boss in Heroic difficulty. (magenta/green)
Mythic variant: Rare drop from any boss in Mythic difficulty. (red/gold)

Also note that individual armour pieces, of course, can also be collected as boss drops. The colour will correspond to the difficulty. However, shoulders and helmets can only be obtained through the Ensembles; they do not drop from bosses.

sounds like the sets which drop instead of being the quest reward are quite rare, maybe 1%?

From some rough memory I believe the scripture on the shoulders is "A O M" in elder futhark runes.

There's various comments on how you can obtain the Prova del Valore sets but I still read a lot of comments about people confused on how these drop so I figured I'd post an updated guide on how to collect them.

Raid Finder Ensembles

The following sets can be obtained on any difficulties and from any bosses. This means you can have up to 12 attempts per week per character if you clear the raid on LFR, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. They all have a low drop chance.

Plate set for Guerriero, Paladino and Cavaliere della Morte: Set: Piastre Funerarie del Defunto Prescelto
Mail set for Cacciatore and Sciamano: Set: Catene del Defunto Prescelto
Leather set for Ladro, Monaco, Druido and Cacciatore di Demoni: Set: Abiti del Defunto Prescelto
Cloth set for Sacerdote, Mago and Stregone: Set: Paramenti del Defunto Prescelto

Normal Ensembles

The following sets can be obtained by completing Prova del Valore: L'armata perduta. You can loot the majority of the Frammento d'Anima Valarjars from Guarm and Helya within the raid and in very small amounts from the Missioni Mondiali degli Helarjar. You can loot the fragments from the raid once per difficulty, per week.

Heroic Ensembles

The following sets can be obtained as a 100% drop chance from Helya on Heroic or Mythic difficulty.

Mythic Ensembles

The following sets are no longer available. They were rewarded from completing Prescelto. You would get this Feat of Strength from defeating all three bosses on Mythic difficulty without dying. The lucky players were also rewarded with title, also no longer available.

Additional information/tips

You can queue in solo/group for LFR ToV by talking to Arcimago Timear in Dalaran.
You can only loot the sets appropriate for your class, meaning that a mage wouldn't be able to loot the plate set, and a warrior wouldn't be able to loot the cloth set.
The ensembles are not shown in the Sets tab of the Collection interface unless you actually own them.
You can collect individual pieces for each sets from the bosses as regular loot in any difficulties (including Mythic) but the helms, shoulders, and cloaks can only be obtained through the ensembles (you can loot some cloaks but they aren't technically part of the actual ensembles).
The ensembles can be used by your other characters for transmog, as long as they're appropriate for their class.

I got this as an unexpected drop from from Helya on normal while doing my weekly raid for Prova del Valore: L'armata perduta in which end reward is this particurlar set. Nevertheless, I am going to keep raiding for completing the quest anyway, just to be done with it. There's still mogs to raid for anyway.
