Seems kinda useless. Is there anything actually in the lava that would make it more interesting? A questgiver, unique achievement, anything to make this worth getting.

This oil is used to loot the Time Lost Chest, at the opposite end of The Slag Pit. The chest holds the Blacksmithing plans for Blazing Rapier. The oil lasts for 30 seconds once used, and the chest takes 10 seconds to open. If you want to avoid death, make sure to have an escape plan.

I got one to drop after 10 kills. Either today is the luckiest day of my life, or the drop rate is a little out of date. Hopefully for you, it's the latter.

www.wowhead.com/item=142359 has a cast time. Don't just click it and dive into the lava like I did.

Lava Oil is used to get to the Time-Lost Chest, which is immersed in the lava to the left of the bridge that leads to the Quarry Gates. Using the Lava Oil makes you immune to the effects of the lava you are swimming through for 30 seconds, allowing you to open and loot the Chest without being interrupted by fire damage every time you try to open it. The Timer is quite long, and each interruption forces you to start over. The lava damage will make you quite dead very quickly so the Lava Oil is a MUST. On a Well-geared (All Greens) Level 90+ Protection Warrior I was taking 2000+ damage every hit.

After farming the Searing Flamewraiths for 45 minutes and acquiring 12 flasks of Lava Oil for testing, I followed Lycanthropics' warning on application time, then dove in off the bridge. After looting the Chest I tried swimming out and discovered it's a VERY long swim to the end of the lava channel! 3 flasks were required to open the chest and make it to the end, where I was able to haul out and get to safety.
