Not entirely sure about the drop rate (and didn't have anyone else with the questline that I could ask) but I know for sure that as of this writing, out of 6 bosses I've killed so far, 5 gave me Nightshards while the 6th (Krosus, for reference) gave me an Stranezza di Scheggia della Notte Immacolata that also contained 3 Nightshards inside. Seems to suggest that Nightshards so far are either a very high drop rate or 100% drop chance, with an additional rare chance to drop the curio for extra Nightshards.

YMMV, if anyone can confirm whether or not a boss did or didn't drop Nightshards while they had the quest I'll update this comment.

Edit: Spoke to a guildie who killed multiple bosses also, while he didn't get a curio he did get Nightshards from all boss kills so far. So I'm tentatively thinking it's a 100% drop rate so far.

I killed 5 bosses on normal and the first 3 dropped an Stranezza di Scheggia della Notte Immacolata and then the other 2 each dropped a Scheggia della Notte.

I am not sure If I was unlucky or that unlike Corrupted essences you can only get these on one difficult a week, I cleared normal and got some I think from every boss maybe minus 1 then did the first 2 on heroic and neither heroic dropped any shards for me or my friend. So I think its once a week per boss for drop, sadly only got 17/20 :( wanted to finish it in one week.

Just wanted to clarify after having cleared NH Normal earlier this week and ending with 19/20 shards, I went in (on Normal) again tonight to help my guild and got the last shard off Krosus (who did not yield one my first time through).

So it seems that while you may only get one shard per boss per week regardless of difficulty, if a boss does not yield any shard(s) they can potentially do so on a second run through. Or it's a bug but.. yay!

from the other coments it sure doesnt seem like it, but from my experience on 2 diferent chars this had a 100% drop rate; it can drop 1-2 or the curio with 3, and it drops on one difficulty only.
just did 4 bosses on hc and got shard from all of them, and then did full normal run and every boss droped 1-3 shard except the 4 bosses that i had already done in heroic.

If you pick up the quest AFTER you already cleared it on one difficulty, you cannot loot any Nightshards clearing it on a different difficulty. I cleared Heroic on a Thursday, then did the quest up to this part on a Sunday and pugged a Normal. I got 0 shards. As the wowhead comments seemed to indicate the drop rate was a lot higher than...well 0%, I contacted a GM which basically verified that it's not 100% drop rate and that you can't loot them if you picked up a quest after already clearing it on a different difficulty:

I see there was some trouble obtaining the Nightshards for the quest Into The Nighthold which is part of the Balance of Power questline. As I am currently on this quest myself I know how irritating it can become since it does require a lot of hard work. Luckily in this case we can provide some information.

While the comments on WoWhead may say the Nighthshards are guaranteed this is not the case. Must like the Corrupted Essence from the quest Essence of Power there is a chance for the Nightshards to drop none, one, or a Immaculate Nightshard Curio. These can only be looted once per boss during the first kill of the week. Trying to complete this by running Nighthold on another difficulty will not count.

I'm very unlucky or the drop somehow shares id between difficulties even before you got the quest... I cleared NH hc, then I got the quest and then tried to get some Q items from normal, but not a single drop from wholo raid :( so if you plan getting this quest, don't clear Nighthold on any difficulty that week before getting the quest...

Into the Nighthold is one of the last few quests in the chain Improving on History.. and pretty much the biggest roadblock in terms of time (if u already have the rep)..
The quest requires you to collect 20 Scheggia della Notte from Nighthold bosses.
Just a few pointers:

You can only get Nightshards ONCE from each boss on ANY difficulty (unlike Corrupted Essence from EN).. so can't just run normal, heroic (& mythic for the big guns) & finish in a single week. Will take at least two weeks.

Doesn't drop in LFR.

If you've already cleared the raid once this week on Normal BEFORE picking up the quest.. no shards will drop for you this week even on a different difficulty.

Not a guaranteed drop.. some bosses won't drop any Nightshards.. but rarely you can get an Stranezza di Scheggia della Notte Immacolata which gives extra Nightshards (I got 1 curio in two runs and it contained 3 shards, but some have reported getting only 1 shard from it). You can get both this and a Nightshard separately from the same boss.

If you manage to collect 20, make sure to quickly hearth out, submit the quest in Shal'aran and pick up the next quest (Darkness Calls) BEFORE killing Gul'dan.. otherwise you'll have to wait another week. Hopefully your group will be nice enough to summon u back.. which they should because plenty of people speed running normal NH for this quest.

Confirmed by support, these are NOT 100% drop.
After clearing on Heroic I wound up with 8/10 and had it confirmed that they only have a chance to drop from each boss.

After running 10 characters through Nightholds, collecting data from 9, here are my results:
143 bosses killed that could reward nightshard (as in before I reached the 20)
29x I got 0 nightshards
84x I got 1 nightshard
30x I got 3 nightshards ( Stranezza di Scheggia della Notte Immacolata needs to be opened (duuh) )
This comes to an average of 1.22 shards per boss.
It's just over 20% chance to recieve 0 and to recieve 3 shards with 1 being the most common with just under 60%.
All the runs were either normal or heroic with no noticeable difference in dropchance.

I'm not sure when this has changed but as of BFA 8.3 I'm fairly certain you can only obtain these from a single run each week.

Did a full Heroic run the first week and got 14 Nightshards, the second week did another full Heroic run and only got 5 which quite unluckily put me at 19. After 2 more normal clears, a second Heroic clear and a Mythic clear I have not got any more shards from any of the bosses this week. Looks like I'll be waiting a third week for this one.

I can CONFIRM as of May 26th you CAN loot shards from another run in the same week from bosses you have not yet looted a shard from. I ran normal and got a shard from all but guldan. i then ran mythic and got my last shard from guldan on a different difficulty.

Hello fellow Nightshard farmers.

I can confirm that you can get nightshards from multiple difficulties if that specific boss didn't already drop a nightshard for you.

I got 9 nightshards off of Heroic Nighthold with Star Guy, Ellisandre, and Gul'dan not dropping any nightshards.
I ran it on heroic again with a different lockout: nothing.
Then I ran it on normal: nothing
Than I ran it on Mythic: Gul'dan dropped the last nightshard I needed.

Running out of old content to do because i've given up on the anima grind.

Blizzard should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for making these continue to have an obscenely low drop rate for some people. As of today, I have done 3 full mythic clears of Nighthold and am at 19/20 nightshards for my quest. I'm now stuck having to do a 4th clear in order to complete a single quest. This is the kind of thing that turns people off and makes them lose subscribers year after year. Shameful.

Seems to me that your first run of the week only counts toward getting shards.

3 weeks of mythics.......1st week 5, 2nd week 6, this week today was 8...at 19....having to wait ANOTHER week for 1 more measly f*(&$#g shard....blizz wtf...as if this questline wasnt long enough as it is...you have to put not one...but TWO timegates (took me 3 weeks to finish the EN one....) GG BLIZZ

I got 14 on the first week...I thought, well, next week I'll finish this quest finally...but no...blizzard had other plans to me...it only dropped 5...now I'm stuck at 19, thanks blizzard for having me wait another week...

edit: Oh, just adding more to that, I've cancelled my subscription because of this, I'll find a game that values the grind of the player, and not put ridiculous time gates after 4 months of questing already...bye bye

Make sure you check your bags for Stranezza di Scheggia della Notte Immacolata. I've been sitting with two in my bags since my previous runs and only now finding out that I could have had the achievement already.

Didn't come here to check first and assumed I could just run this on normal/heroic/mythic to get all 20 back to back. Started on normal and got 7 and another 3 from a curio. Then ran heroic and got none, then ran mythic and got 1 more from The Demon Within since that 4th Gul'dan phase doesn't happen on the other 2 difficulties. It's a shame that the content is old enough that the bosses are all 1 shot but still gotta get timegated and wait a week to finish the quest
