This seems like it would have some utility for pvp - perhaps a warrior in 5v5 could use it to disrupt casters? A prot warrior would be resilient enough against melee - with spell reflect and a decently proccing silence, I imagine he's more than pull his weight as a 'utility' class.

Fairly easy to get and - while not high dps - 6 seconds is an eternity in pvp; especially when the opposition doesn't expect it. Diminishing returns exist in pvp for the silence, perhaps, but still. Worth a try, I would wager.

This weapon gained notoriety on the Rogue forums when it was revealed that Blizzard CM, Caydiem, who was in charge of helping balance the class was revealed to be MH'ing the sword on her own rogue. It's now a regular WoW meme.

It is a great utility sword for the level though and should be considered for 59 twinks. Just don't MH it on your rogue.

duel wielding these is stupidly OP even on a lvl 80, there is no DR and they dont share a PPM, its a flat %, vs a caster theres no way they'd even get a chance to cast. or even vs a DK, time to put in a ticket to get the proc rate reduced...

Whenever some player/players think out something that blizzard did not -like using old weapons& items- blizzard punished their intelligence instead awarding them.. Like most of them this got nerfed too.. /sigh

This weapon was golden, back before it was nerfed. It always felt good to watch those high-level ganker-casters squirm when me and a buncha' lowbies jumped on them and ripped 'em to shreds with this. The poetic justice in killing the guy who just ganked you with a lowbie weapon was priceless.

Anyone tried dualing these in bg on a low level dk? While nerfed at 80, these things would murder in Lv59 BG's.

Does not proc on level 70 targets. Tested 5-24-11. Procs fine on the level 60 target I tested at the same time.

proc chance is ~5-7% (approximately with 13 procs out of 220 successful hits 49 lvl rogue vs 49 lvl plant mob), not 14% definitely. With this attack speed(2.40) and such a miserable chance, you should not rely on this proc in any case

Getting Silent Fang can easily become a schlep; This sword may of been ≈14% drop chance back in the day (according to data here), but it took me at least twenty-eight clears to finally get this to drop since the reintroduction of the old school old school. I know unlucky RNG, but 28+ roll attempts was suspicious. If you're determined, keep at it -- it does still drop as of the date of this post.

Also, in the many multiple repeat drops of the other items in Darklord Gandling's loot table, I got one non-listed Headmaster's Charge staff the run just before Silent Fang dropping, which I, of course, took as a good sign that Silent Fang was on its way!
