So, Winemaster Lydell shows it in stock (limited quantity), but anytime I try to buy one, I get an error, "That item is currently sold out."

It's right there. I can still see it. Leaving and coming back, it's still there, but "sold out".

In-joke about snooty wine merchants? Or server error? You decide!

Managed to buy one by shift-right clicking it and choosing 1 as the amount. Perhaps there's a reason?

As of 7.2, this isn't working for some reason. I've shift+clicked to purchase the Red Royal in the past with no problems, but now the shift+click selection only moves in multiples of 5, just like with the mana waters and many other 5-stack items.

A GM ticket says that this is intended, and although the representative looked at this very wowhead page, previous successful attempts were apparently unintended. Not sure if it is indeed a snooty jab as Farmbuyer joked or not.

For future readers who come to the game or NPC after this (possibly unintentional) change, yes, it was possible to buy single Farondis Red Royal bottles. I have done it multiple times prior to 7.2.

Everyone's talking about how to buy it, but is there a particular reason to do so? Does it have any effects beyond regular alcohol?

As of now, they can once more be bought in stacks of 1, therefore no longer unbuyable from a vendor who has less than 5
