This item puts you into a phase of Nar'thalas Academy. This area is located in the center of Azsuna, at roughly (see map). During the Azsuna storyline, you complete a number of quests in the academy that prove to be quite fun!

One of these quests is Compito in classe: Disegno Avanzato di Rune. This quest has you trace runes that are inscribed on the floor - precision is necessary in order to pass each challenge! The quest offers you 3 different patterns to trace - Arcane, Fire and Frost. Once the quest is completed, you lose access to these minigames.

Chiave dell'Accademia di Nar'thalas allows you to go back and tackle these puzzles again, and even more levels of difficulty!

Apart from rune drawing, there are other challenges you can also access within the academy.

This item is one of the new Rare solves in Legion Archaeology. Nar'thalas Academy is found in the central of the Legion zone Azsuna.

There will be 3 new races of artifacts to unearth - Demon, Highmountain Tauren, and Highborne.

The achievement for unearthing all of the Common Legion archaeology finds is Maneggiare con cura.
The achievement for unearthing all of the Rare Legion archaeology finds is Un occhio sopraffino.

Obtaining Rare Solves in Legion

Based on the latest information, Legion Archaeology Rare solves WILL NOT be obtained from surveying, but rather will be part of an ongoing story questline. Every 2 weeks a quest will appear from the Archaeology trainer (Dariness la Dotta), granting a Rare project at its completion. Note that level 110 will be required for these quests.

In older Dalaran Dariness la Dotta was in the Legerdemain Lounge, but she is now located in Things of the Past, a shop on the northeast side of the Magus Commerce Exchange, between the Forge of Fate and the Like Clockwork, the Engineering shop.

OK this has to be my favorite Archaeology reward in Legion so far.

During leveling in Azuna, you can visit Nar'thalas Academy and can do a few quests involving solving runes (tracing patterns on the floor) and fighting creatures animated in a book. Once you finish these quests, the NPCs are no longer interact-able.

With this key, when you head back there and use it, you enter a new phase of this area with all of the NPCs back before they died.

You can practice Runes at the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior levels for Frost, Arcane, and Fire (so 12 patterns, 3 we've seen before and 9 new)

The NPC with the books will let you fight 3 varying levels of the three mobs you fought.
Level 1 is soloable
Level 2 recommends 3 people (I soloed it as an overgeared DH)
Level 3 recommends 10 people (again, soloed as an overgeared DH)

I haven't found any rewards from this yet but it's pretty fun if you enjoyed doing these quests.

Is this key required to get the 2 treasures that are supposed to be in the lower level of Nar'thalas Academy? I haven't been able to find them yet, and I've finished the questline.

Got this today 18/01/17.
Used the key inside the academy and phased into the "time-lost" version.
I talked to Instructor Nidriel and did all 12 of the runes.
I talked to Sythorne and did all 9 book fights.
This allowed me to walk up to the headmistress and "duel" her.
Defeating her gave me the Headmaster title.

Solo'd the Headmaster as a Guardian druid and got a title for 5 seconds. Other than that, another useless item from this profession this expansion.

So I went into the area and used the key after going up the headmistress I was able to solo her on my Brewmaster monk even though it said to have 10 players.
After killing the Headmistress I was given the title "Headmistress" It wasn't auto applied I had to go into my titles and apply it.

I soloed Elya Azuremoon as an enhance shaman, so you don't need to be a tank solo it. Just avoid standing in crap, interrupt her Mass Slow, and occasionally use self-heals if you have any.

I picked up the key today, and did some experimentation.

The first thing to note is that the alternate phase seems to behave differently if you're in a party than if you're solo: when first I entered the alternate academy phase solo, I could duel the headmistress immediately and got the title right away, and all the book battles and rune tasks were immediately available. This might be a bug, but is how it worked today.

However, when I saw some of the comments here and saw other folks' quite different experiences, I found a volunteer and tried some things out. When in a party, even of only two people, the headmistress wouldn't duel us until we'd interacted some more with the other instructors, and they only offered the lowest level monsters and runes. Once we defeated the lowest level monster in each category the next one up became available (everyone was phased into the book fight together). The runes followed a similar pattern, except that you can't see or assist other people's runes - but the party does get credit for them. Ideally I guess this means you could have three people each working on a different element's runes.

Once all the 10-man battles and senior runes had been done, the headmistress was willing to duel us for title privileges.

The phasing seems to be slightly strange - using the key gives you a buff that puts you into the alternate academy phase, but we sometimes had two buffs party-wide, and each character could only cancel their own buff, but it wasn't clear whose buff was currently up.

Finally, and this may be of interest to people not interested in archaeology, we found that we could invite people who hadn't done the quest to our party, phase them into the alternate academy, defeat the headmistress, and they got the title. This worked both for people who were on the archaeology quest, and those who'd not done any archaeology at all.

The title seems to be specific to individual characters, NOT account-wide, so the ability to get the title easily for toons who aren't interested in archaeology is convenient.

You only have to kill the one Headmaster not the other dragon dude, i got this title with 1 other person that was there, so if you want to invite your friend to get the title, only you and your friend will be there, just kill the headmaster, go to your titles, and apply it.

Soloed Headmistress as 875 Havoc DH, got Headmaster title immediately without doing any other chores. Should be soloable on any class that has heal and some gear.

Finally got this one but kinda disappointed. yeah the Hall of arcane learning occupants became alive, but the building itself didnt change much still looked in that room in ruins, the rest of the acadamy for me was empty and still in ruins. isnt time lost version meaning the past version before its destruction based on the arcane room occupants?

Make sure to set aside a proper amount of time to complete this. If you leave the area, everything will reset and you will have to start over.

go to academy learning room where you complete the rune quests. the only reward you can get is the headmaster/headmistress title from dueling the headmistress. says 10 players, she only has 40 m health and can be soloed with decent gear.

Did this just now. You don't have to do the runes etc, you can just fight the Headmistress and get the title of Headmaster. Soloed her as 880 Ret.

You can use this key inside the Halls of Arcane Learning (inside Nar'thalas Academy) When you go down inside the academy, go to your left (where you quested previously in Azsuna). When you use the key, you will go to a different phase. You can duel the mistress straight. You don't need to complete any rune challenge like mentioned in other comments. The game suggests 10 players but I think it's soloable on semi-decent gear and if you have even a bit of self heals. I did as a 865 Frost DK without problems. Took a litttle while but she lost the duel. You get the title afterwards.

Like many others, I just got this as well. As soon as I got there, the duel option was immediately available as well, without doing any of the other stuff. Easily soloed as 860 Fury Warrior, and got the title.

It takes up a bag slot but I figured out this little key comes in handy during the WQs in the Hall of Arcane Learning. You can phase yourself and no longer have to worry about pvp or a crowd. So much easier!

Annoyingly, if you log out while in the area, all your progress will be reset. I had finished everything but the 10-player bosses, and logged out to go do something, and when I came back I was back at freshman level for the rune training. This is especially annoying since the higher levels of the fire runes kept repeatedly bugging out, and I had to run around the ring probably about 15 times before it would finally complete.

Not now. Spend a little bit more time interacting with the other instructors, and i might consider it.

me and my bf (Warrior 860+ and DH 870) picked to fight KOBOLD (10player), SEA SKROG (10 player) and The BLUE DRAGONFLIGHT (10 player) from the books that the NPC: Research Assistant SYTHORNE was offering to read through. We didnt do any of the floor tracing thingees. After that we talked to Elya again and her response was different this time :3

A duel? If you insist. I suppose a bit of combat never hurt anyone. Actually, that's probably not accurate. Ready when you are!

After beating her she says,

I yield. Besting your headmistress is no small feat. Congratulations.

That's when you earn the Headmaster/Headmistress title :3 Also only I had the Narthalas Academy key he never did any archaeology but he got the title too! :3 yay

When fighting Elya Lunazzurra, you can kite her around the pillars in the hall. I did this to allow me to reset my healing abilities as fury warrior. And I also found a 'dead spot' on the pillars, so you can stand still and she just stands on the other side and can't reach you. This is very efficient when soloing.

I completed all runes at the senior level and defeated the kobold for 10 players before she was willing to duel me. It may be different for others but that's what worked for me.

I was able to solo this on my 871 warlock and duel the headmistress right away without doing the other activities. I was in Destro and used my Infernal which triggers "Lord of Flames". I also benefited from food for haste and a Prolonged Power potion. I received the title.

If you're not able to duel the Headmistress right away, you could try relogging. I tried doing all of the runes, and almost all of the storybook fighting, with still no luck initiating the duel. I logged out and came back a few hours later, and she dueled me right away.
As has been mentioned in these comments, when dueling her, it is possible to LoS her with the pillars in such a way that she doesn't follow you, and instead just stands still on the other side. This means you can't hit her, but it also means she can't hit you, nor will any of her casts affect you. If you don't have a self-heal, or you have a weak one, you can still use this method and play the waiting game (if you're patient).

Small tip if you are trying the storybook fights: the 10-player kobold fight is very easy if you're ranged. Just don't interrupt any of his casts; they're all melee-range focused. Let him cast and stay away from him for the duration of the casts and he won't be hitting you at all.

Even though the item isn't a toy (yet), it seems the progress you make with the "lessons" is account-wide.

I did the runes and all but the 10-man book fights on my main (a mage) but realised I'd never be able to take on the headmistress solo. Got on my druid several days later, got the item, again, and to my surprise the stuff I'd already done on my mage was unlocked for my druid as well.

A few tips nobody has seemed to include yet:
-Even while I wasn't away, my progress would digress. So, I'd finish the drawings completely, then finish the marks, but when I couldn't duel the Headmistress, I'd go back and see that literally all of the 5m & 10m drawings were reset. Don't worry if you have the same issue--it's absolutely annoying, but you'll just have to do them over (hopefully not as many times as I've had to) and they'll eventually stop resetting.
-If you're preeeeeetty sure you did everything but you still can't duel the Headmistress, try doing the senior marks and 10m drawings again. Once again, if your progress has been partially reset, there's no indicator that you completed the task.
-Don't go AFK when you're doing this. Was marked AFK for about five minutes and all of my progress was reset when I was one boss away from fighting the Headmistress. I definitely wasn't mad... definitely.
tl;dr: this can get absolutely irritating and repetitive if you're on the same boat as I was, but be patient. I definitely earned the title after all of this.

All I did was the Arcane Rune on the Senior level and was able to duel the Headmistress. It was a very easy fight as an 897 Fury Warrior. Just interrupt her casting when you can (Interrupting Shout & Pummel) and stay out of the bad stuff on the ground. Even getting caught in some of it, my lowest health was around 74% before I popped Enraged Regeneration.

Just Beat the headmistress as an 823 Frost mage (I had Aethas with me) - I didn't drop below ~80%.
As soon as I used the key she was available to duel, I didn't have to do anything else.

IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING INTO THE SCHOOL OF ARCANE LEARNING

-Read this.

So, I was seriously struggling with this item. I was super excited as a Harry Potter nerd to experience more of this area. However, when I went to Nar'thalas, I was unable to enter the school of arcane learning, there was a big door that was locked and would knock me back if I tried to enter. After a few tickets and being told to "check WoWhead, which I had done many times and tried googling my heart out, this is what worked for me. First, if you've completed the actual quest line in Aszuna for Nar'Thalas, I haven't tested this, but try simply opening your toy box and using the item Cappello Mistico da Matricola if you have it. If you do, use it and click on the door, it may allow you to open it. If you don't have it, start on the quest Le nostre ossa, you don't have to do any of the other quests near him, just get him to go to Nar'Thalas, then complete the Nar'Thalas quests in that area. When you're done you'll receive the toy Cappello Mistico da Matricola, equip it and click on the door, it will open this time.

One last thing. For me, I tried talking to the headmistress and she absolutely would not duel me. I went and killed the other bosses, etc, but she still said, go learn more. So, I had a friend invite me to his group (he wasn't even in the zone) and then all of a sudden she'd duel me. ilvl 890 WW Monk and I easily solo'd her. Just keep her stunned and interrupt as much as possible, because she loves to stun you.

I hope this helps anyone else that was struggling with this, because I was starting to feel like I was the only one with this problem, especially after being told that I just needed to look at WoWhead.

Invited a guildie to grp while i was finishing runes (had asked in guild chat earlier) and was not able to see her until she caught up to me in runes and book encounters. One thing I noticed is that once the guildie phased in, the rune options were set to the first one, but after we got the title, I dropped grp before unphasing, and found that my personal progress was preserved.

The only thing I can take away from this is if your grp starts progress together at the same time, each different requirement can be done by a different person, which then contributes to progress for the whole group.

After doing all the runes I changed my spec (cat to bear) for the fights... and got phased back into the regular academy. I don't know if that happens every time, but I'd suggest not changing spec while in there.

NPC's Gone missing

Tried this yesterday 18-01-2018. I could not duel, had to spend more time with the instructors. Did a 10P Kobold fight and started with the patterns on the floor, first fire. Until senior level no problem. After completing (or during completion) the senior fire level, all the npc's were gone and there was nothing to interact with. Elya was not there either. I was forced to either use my hearthstone, run out of the building or use the key. Any of the three options resets your progress and you have to start all over again.
I used the key and started again. Did some patterns (1 until and including senior), then some fights, one of the 10P. Checked with Elya in between, still had to spend time with the instructors. Then for the second time after (or during, I did not notice) completing a senior level pattern (arcane this time) again the while room was empty, all npc's gone. So either I am doing something terribly wrong, or there is a time limit for staying in the academy or this is bugged at the moment.
I have not tried a third time.
I sent a ticket to support, have had no reply yet but will update this post when I do.

'Thankyou for reporting this issue to us, as someone who plays I know that this can take a while, so encountering this bug must really have been frustrating. After spending some time looking in to this, I found that this seems to be an issue that isn't fixable by the game master team, while we do have great powers, they do have limits.

Instead we will need the developers to work on this. We don't actually deal with bugs ourselves but it would really help us out if you could report this to our bugs team by using the bug report tool ingame - it's found just to the left of where you made the ticket and it will send on the details for this to get fixed the moment they can!'

I created a bug ticket in game. Not sure if it is standard procedure, but I did not get a confimation or status of the ticket an no link to follow it.

Got the title "Headmaster" today (1/27/2018). I did all the fights in order on the NPC's chat log, then all the rune challenges in order, and no one despawned for me. Good luck, everyone.

If you get stuck in one of the drunk walk around the circle tests, the best thing to do is start over. Just start a different test, then go back to the one you were stuck at, and start from the bigger rings.

Can anyone confirm that Fire - Senior pattern is not bugged after patch 8.0?
I did all pattern except this one. Tried several times and the biggest ring doesn't fleshes when it is completed.
Edit: After re-logging removing the key buff and activating the item again I tried and I did it from the first try. It is working.

1-15-2019 Got the Key today while doing archeology. Had to look it up here to find out what it was for. I entered the Hall and used the key, went straight to Elya and dueled her. Got the title "Headmaster". Did not encounter any bugs or issues at all. I was not in any party or raid.

Tip: Check your titles (under Character Info) before you go through the trouble of visiting the Nar'thalas Academy. It's possible to accumulate keys if you do a lot of Archaeology quests. I had two keys sitting in my bags but already did the quests long ago and already had the title.

FYI Completed this today and had to do all steps, (Level 114 rogue) I asked the headmistress to duel after each step and she said she'd consider it if I talked to others first. So maybe the skip has been fixed.

I was unable to complete today. I completed everything the instructors asked, but the Headmaster keeps telling me to spend more time with the instructors. Must be bugged. I checked and I do not have the Headmaster Title

The quest Dariness la Dotta offers changes every other week(Every quest is up for 2 weeks), in the same order as they are listed above.

These quests require Legion Expansion and Character-level 45+ and are available to both Horde and Alliance.

Can someone with the key get another person that doesn't have the key the Headmaster/Headmistress title? Even when the quest isn't up, just by using the object? It may be a stupid question but I can't seem to find an answer to it. I'd like to use it to get my friends the title and even my alts that are on a RaF account bound to my main account.

If you're doing this in DF and you're like me looking for a door as it is a "key", there isn't one. Just go to the Hall of Arcane Leaning (the section w/ the NPCs that can give you quests ) and click on the key it will transport you into the past where you can challenge the Headmaster.
