To fully explain, the E'ko quests were originally used to bestow one of several buffs on your character, which would provide useful enhancements. These buffs now happen automatically once the player has completed Una strana forza vitale, with a chance to gain the appropriate buff upon killing the respective Winterspring creature. The following creatures apply:

Frostsabers
Ice Thistle Yeti
Shardtooth Bears
Winterspring Furbolgs
Frostmaul Giants
Wildkin
Chillwind Chimaera

Incidentally, the player is awarded Follia dell'E'ko for gaining all of these buffs at least once.

Actually, you don't need to complete the quest Strange Life Forces to get the buffs.

So yes you can throw it away, or hang it over your fireplace. You decide.

Just for the record, this item is still a drop. Picked up 2 of them just now while killing yetis in Winterspring. Today is 10-31-13.

Alt-tabbed to Wowhead to see what the heck they are. Glad to know they're useless so I don't need to save 'em.

As of Patch 5.4.1 they are still available in-game, ~~unlike what wowhead says.~~
EDIT: It now shows as obtainable

This drop for me as well. currently in 6.2 is it? 8/1/2015 Fury of hellfire is that the last patch of WoD.

It still drops from Winterspring mobs as of 7.1.5. It is white due to historical reasons (WS was an end game zone back in 2006), but it can be safely sold with no regrets
