I hate this gem so much. From what i've noticed, it is far and away the most expensive pre-BC gem. Also, next to Aquamarine, it's the one you need most to level Jewelcrafting in the 1-300 range. If you are on a high population server be prepared to dish out 20g+ for one of these.

As the above poster said you're doing yourself a huge favour just grinding Thorium Ore, prospecting it and using the gems out of it if levelling Jewelcrafting.

290-295; the best route is prospecting thorium ore, because you can use the large opal in a green recipe, azerothian diamonds in a yellow recipe, and huge emeralds in an orange recipe. There's a high chance of at least one of these to be found, so it will save you some gold. And then I just bought the last 10 huge emeralds from the AH to get to 300.

After 2 days of mining thorium (for blue sapphires, azerothian diamons and large opals) i have no less than 32 of these god damned gems. I just need 1 more of any other to level enough to use these. Im drowning in the damned things so i have to question how rare they really are.

Honestly, I went around these entirely for my last ten levels of JC, I just continued making Sapphire Pendant of Winters Night. I can almost guarantee that this way is cheaper, and on servers like mine, the only option apart from prospecting thoruim.

Was powerleveling JC'ing, found them on the AH at 30g each.

So, I blew about 600g on prospecting Thorium Ore (at 15g/stack), to not get a single one. 25% drop rate my ass. -_-

They are at least 10g each on my realm and i was kinda poor so i decided to farm thorium
Best place in my opinion is Un'Goro Crater i got like 60-70 ore in each run and i only needed 2 (relatively short) runs

Huge Emeralds & Blue Sapphires can be found in abundance while prospecting Thorium ore, as several others have noted! :-)

After flying around again, much lower to the ground; I did finally start getting some. But no where near as many as previous comments. The WoW Mining guide even tells you to come here.

It is not that hard of a gem to get. I spent less than an hour on Slithus (off-hours so that I pretty much had the place to myself, mining-wise), and had nearly a stack of Thorium ore. (186 - close enough!). I prospected about 100 of them in order to get 17 of these gems (I had 3 of them show up just from the mining - and needed a total of 20 to make 10 items to get me to level 300). Granted, it was not quite 1/3rd, but I got what I needed, and had enough to make the thorium settings and move onto Outland gem cutting.

The best place to farm Smeraldo Gigante so far is Cratere di Un'Goro.
You can mine it from Vena Ricca di Torio and Vena Piccola di Torio.
