Make sure you take off all gear with durability before whacking your critter of choice, because the act of being in combat slowly reduces durability.

Also, you cannot log off in combat , so don't fret about coming back to your keyboard every 29 minutes. And so long as no one kills your critter and you keep hitting it, it will not disengage. Just find a nice quiet spot when you know you won't be playing for a while :)

I reccomend the Tram, drag the rat down the hall a ways. For Horde, just find an isolated hill in Durotar and whack a boar, I don't know.

I'm only level 50 currently, but I'm glad I read this instead of throwing it out. I made myself a sandwich and came back and had lost approximately 200-300hp and had levelled from 0 to 245! That's about 10 minutes of idling, this is great.

Hmm you can wear a sheild well Geting yours skill up and sense that wep doesnt hit any higher then if you have just your fists anyway kill Grove walkers By Dalaran Cords 53,55 they heal themselfs

As of Patch 3.2, this baby still works!
As I type this, I'm idling in Eversong and whacking the Dragonhawks there for easy skilling.
Thanks to those who mentioned removing items to prevent durability loss, you saved me a gold or two in repairs!

Currently if you got rid of yours, tough luck....you'll have to level up your unarmed the old fashioned way.
I'll still have the dubious honor of leveling up my 1h skills. As a ret pally I hardly ever use 1h weapons but going for the achievement makes me want to get the weakest/fastest 1h weapons that I can find.

Also, I kept this item since it goes *perfectly* with a full Midsummer Festival outfit!

Agreed, goes perfect with midsummer outfit. if u destroyed yours, go talk to the dude and he will give you one fo free. afk auto attack on a level 1 is awsome. goes swimmingly with tuxedo outfit, haliscan outfit, Scarlet monastary mage outfit.

Nothing better then equipping this beauty and heading down to the Deeprun Tram naked to lvl your unarmed weapon skill against a Deeprun Rat... imagine the stories people tell when they see a naked toon fighting an epic battle with a Deeprun Rat to lvl his unarmed skills!

If you're a hunter, put pet on passive and use Eyes of the Beast to aggro a low level mob. Then run up and auto attack the mob while it whacks your pet. Regen will take care of pet health while you level your unarmed skill. Go make a sandwich and play solitaire for the next 30 minutes. The last point from 399 to 400 takes forever.

I am not seeing the modeling on my in-game character as of this patch, and in the character select screen it shows a blue/white checkered cube in my hand. There is no light effect. Sad if this is not a bug, been using as a torch since vanilla WoW launched.

It appears that as of cataclysm this beautiful staff is no longer equip-able. Its a shame, especially since it no longer matters that you could once level your offhand skill. I just love the idea of equipping a quest item, plus it looked awesome.

No longer equippable with 4.0. I don't understand why Blizzard has to ruin our fun by nerfing these items.

Not only was it fun to attack critters and such while doing no damage, but it also served as a portable light source while riding around on a mount.

As a Rogue, there is no suitable replacement.

This makes me very sad. :( Why would they take away this wonderful item's equipability! If Blizz didn't want people using it to level unarmed skill, they could just make it not give skill-ups anymore! I happen to like how it looked and I loved that it lit up the ground around me all the time, unlike lantern off-hands that just light up when you have it out (which is rarely, especially for a caster like me).

If you happen to do this quest before Cataclysm. And you kept the quest item in your bank like i did. You'll have to go grab it since the quest item is Unique. Sadly it isn't equippable anymore. Kept this for a good 2 years and now it makes no use for me now. Hope this helps!

I was very confused about this -- trying to level my Thorium Reputation, i was completing quests in the zone and got to the need for this item, but didnt have it. Turned out i had one in my bank, from loooong before Cataclysm... but after all the zones/quests reset, i'm having to repeat a lot of these.

So check ur inventory if this item doesnt appear for u.
