This is dropped in WC by Mutanus, who appears during the event, where you have to escort and protect Disciple of Naralex (the druid NPC at the beginning of WC).

This event is available only after you have killed Verdan the Everliving (the last big boss).

If your group has time, I suggest that you complete the event, because this short questline provides some nice bonus exp from WC. Quest rewards aren't bad either.

Just remember to clear the beginning area from all the raptors before you start the event.

You'll need to talk to Sputtervalve first, right next to the flight master in Ratchet. They won't have a quest-questionmark, you just have to talk to them. They're at 63,37

They will tell you to talk to Falla Sagewind who is on top of the hill where WC is, at 48,33.

After you talk to Sputtervalve, Falla Sagewind is on top of the mountain due west of Crossroads. If you run west of the town and climb one of the spines on the mountain she is right on top.

3100xp for my level 17 warrior. If you can get someone to help you kill Mutanus it's well worth it.

Its worth more later on. I turned it in at 24 and got 3400Xp from it.

With the new RAF, at level 15 i got 9400 xp.
4k XP under a full level.

i soled wc and did the quest.. i got 320xp at lvl 38 so it eventually goes down

just take out the fang leaders in any order u prefer, then talk to the npc at the entrance to activate the event

might be helpfull to clear the path already of any enemies as during the event 2 spawns of enemies will attack u

pretty easy as a 28 tank with some blue gear with mainly prot skills

made some nice cash too

Just dropped for me today, at about 3:50 central time on the server Moon Guard.

Today is March 14th 2013. Was running through WC on a 58 DK and it dropped from Mutanus.

I read the comments and the quest has been removed for awhile now, but i think I'm going to keep this item just for the luls.

That thing drops for me almost every single time I run WC... Since the quest was removed a couple years back, I wonder how blizz STILL didn't remove it... I mean, deleting something out of the loot table doesn't seem that hard when it's cool gear, why would it be on a useless quest item?

I can also verify that this item is still dropped from the end boss of Wailing Caverns, though it is useless, it is still* in the game.

Just so you know it dropped again today March 3, 2014 I had know idea what it was for so I came to wowhead to find out looks like it's an item from the past I guess it wont have a special place in my bags :(

I just got the 'Glowing Shard' in WC on 3/24/2014... It's still here, yes, wish it at least had vendor value.

I'm keeping this and some other non-value items (books/keys/crystals) in bag since they act as kind of 'buffer' to the new and old items in my bags.
Using ElvUI it sorts these kinds of items as first and so act as buffer of sorts which tells me where new stuff ends and old stuff begins. It helps that you cannot sell these items by accident.

2020 update! The Glowing Shard is not useless in Classic WoW. In classic it gives you a quest and 2,000 XP and some boots!
