Not Without Great Sacrifice - Datamined Dragonflight Dialogue Reveals Ysera's Price

Toward the conclusion of Shadowlands, Ysera admits that although she had been fully revived, she was bound to Ardenweald and unable to leave without great sacrifice. Although Tyrande quickly offered to pay it, the Dreamer declined, mysteriously expressing that she would return if Elune willed it. In the latest Alpha build however, datamined dialogue reveals that sacrifice has a name.

Datamined Dialogue
Our previous articles explored the potential
involvement of Elune
and two distinctly named weapon models gave us our first hint that Ysera might return in Dragonflight, though the how remained unclear. In our follow up, a now removed spell more explicitly confirmed her return through the use of the
Globe of Rebirth
, though still lacking context.
This week's build doesn't fully confirm if the Dreamer will return to Azeroth or how she will manifest herself, but it does give us a good idea of how. Please keep in mind however that this is
datamined dialogue, which may be incomplete or subject to change

Tyrande: Ysera, your flight needs you.
Tyrande: We need you.
Tyrande: Whatever the price may be for your return to Azeroth, name it.
Malfurion: Tyrande...
Tyrande: Tell us!
Malfurion: It's me.
Malfurion: I must be the one to stay.
Tyrande: What?
Malfurion: Ysera knows this -- though she would never ask it of me.
Tyrande: No.
Tyrande: We will find another way.
Malfurion: When she gave her life for mine in Val'sharah, it was not her time.
Malfurion: And now... the balance may be restored.
Tyrande: Then... then I will stay as well.
Tyrande: Shandris and the others can...
Malfurion: Tyrande...
Malfurion: Should everything we hope come to pass, the Kaldorei will need you.
Tyrande: I am so tired, Malfurion.
Tyrande: Do not ask this of me.
Tyrande: After everything we have endured...
Malfurion: My love.
Malfurion: You have always been the strength of our people.
Malfurion: They will follow you ever onward, and you will never be alone.
Tyrande: Until I see you again...
Tyrande: I will dream of the night we may truly rest... together.
We don't have full context of the conversation just yet, so we don't know that the characters actually go through with this trade, but we can see that Malfurion is a more than willing participant. In a way, it makes some sense - as the foremost Druid of the Night Elven people, Malfurion has a close connection to both the Emerald Dream and Ysera, who was his long-time mentor alongside the demigod Cenarius and helped him further in Legion. On the other hand, he's another major character joining a long list of those who have been killed off or otherwise pushed aside in recent years, making room for a revolving door of new characters whose story rarely progresses beyond their specific expansion. Many players have criticized this as a form of "faction tax," as the removals typically mirror one another across factions - Varian for Vol'jin, Anduin for Sylvanas, and so on.
Gone, but Not Forgotten
Still, while it's unclear exactly how "Elune wills" Malfurion's trade for Ysera, it is important to recognize that this does not mean the Archdruid is necessarily dead and gone - just shelved for awhile. World of Warcraft features a large cast of major NPC characters, and has often had a difficult time giving appropriate screen time to each, especially when storylines flow from one expansion into another. This trade of Malfurion for Ysera would be a convenient way to sideline a character without killing them off completely the way
Varian
,
Saurfang
, or so many other stories have ended, still allowing him to return at some point in the future, while explaining why he's not involved in present events. Interestingly however, Malfurion isn't the only major character to remain in the Shadowlands -
Vol'jin remains in Ardenweald
as a wildseed waiting to be born anew,
Sylvanas continues her penance
in the Maw, and
Anduin remains in self-exile
, so it's completely possible we'll see more stories unfold involving them... just probably not within the immediate future.
That doesn't mean it's entirety palatable either though. While it wouldn't exactly be the first time Malfurion took a long nap while the rest of the world went on without him, it's a heart aching intermission and feels wrong for such an important character to be wantonly cast aside. It isn't an overly satisfying conclusion to Tyrande's arc either, as the two continually express their great and undying love in dialogue, but are rarely given any chance to enjoy it without being interrupted by one event or another.
We previously found a
new Malfurion NPC
in Dragonflight, which will presumably be taking part in this conversation with Ysera and Tyrande.
An Evolving Narrative
As for where the story will continue from here, only time will tell. The spells associated to the
Globe of Rebirth
uncovered last week appear to have been removed,
Elune remains aloof
, and there's still no concrete evidence of of exactly what
the Sister's Tear
will be used for, but we expect all of these questions to be explored further as Dragonflight Alpha testing continues.
