My guess about this is for classes that want to use a staff but because they have a main hand mace/sword/dagger and an offhand item/shield they can get better mileage from +50 spellpower and the added benefits of the offhand.

The tooltip only says 'staff' it doesnt say 'melee weapon' so my guess is people woth the aforementioned problem can still use a staff and enchant it with this to give it that boost to be better for them than a main hand and offhand if they prefer a particuar stat on the staff.

Very much needed to give an alternative to Mace+OH combos, but seems to be a little prohibitively expensive. Just have to see if the SP values will match up to the combo ones - though it seems slightly unlikely right now, unless new staves have more SP than equivalent level maces (this is 18 more than the mace enchant, but most offhands have far more than that)

This is true, but staves already have more SP than the one handers. With the extra from the enchant it should bring it level to the main+offhand combo.

Since it's a skill level 450 enchant, it will most likely require abyss crystals to purchase like the +40 stamina on bracers thing.

Grand Magister's Staff of Torrents was a nice step in the right direction. Greatstaff of the Nexus is also introduced as one of the best itemised staff in wotlk so far, and moving away from the stat-stick staves we had in BC. Sockets along with this enchant could be a viable solution to make staves competitive to their MH/OH counterparts and also to close the spellpower gap a bit.

This makes Staves superior to 1H/OH combos. Runescribed Blade/Guiding Star combined with Overcharged Fuel Rod and a 63 SP enchant adds up to 687 SP. Staff of Endless Winter + Enchant Staff- Greater Spellpower adds up to 668 SP before you add in gems, and even if you add in the lowest +SP rare gems possible you're still getting more SP out of SoEW than 1H/OH combos. (Albeit only 8, as we're talking 695 SP vs. 687.)

But if you throw in 2 19 SP gems, that number increases (706 vs. 687), and if you're a Jewelcrafter there's no contest. A JC using Staff of Endless Winter can potentially get 741 SP out of this item using 2x Runed Dragon's Eyes. That's 54 more SP total for the Staff over the 1H/OH combo.

I grant that this example isn't totally equitable because neither Runescribed Blade nor Guiding Star have sockets, and it's really the sockets that are the deal-breaker. If you compare the Unraveling Reach (w/81 SP) with Pulse Baton or Firesoul (w/63 SP) plus Surplus Limb (which seems to be the most popular OH at the moment, and we're using it because I do not see any OH items dropping in 10-man Ulduar), the 1H/OH still wins.

I'm curious to see how Staves fare once we start to see sockets on 1H caster weapons. But that's the future, and for now the best caster weapon you can get is a hardmode drop Staff (in both 10 and 25 man Ulduar*) with 81 SP enchanted. Kinda cool to see the role reversal.

Though maybe 1H weapons won't get (or just won't get as many?) sockets as Staves because they are naturally paired with an Off Hand, while Staves aren't and thus have a greater "need" for sockets. Or I could be talking out of my ass.

*Just to clarify, this means that the best caster item you can get out of a 10-man is the Icecore Staff, and that the best caster item you can get out of a 25-man is the Staff of Endless Winter. Thought I would just clear that up.

Maybe in the future I will start using links. It's not a requirement of posting on the boards at all, and all that I'm making you do is type words into a search function, but it does make posts look nicer. So. Sure. Okay.

I had thought that Runed Stormjewel was being added next patch. Is this incorrect? It's up on the PTR items page on the WoWHead mainpage, so I assumed that it was. If so, then you'll be socketing 23 SP gems into the Staff, which provides a 26 spellpower boost over the MH/OH combos. That's significant. 18 is significant too, but 26 is certainly more substantial.

I wouldn't take the raw stats too lightly, since many classes have a way of converting the stats into damage somehow (i.e. Moonkin convert Int/Spirit into SP). But I agree that they're not a primary factor in determining which weapon/weapon combination is better, since that's on a class-by-class basis.

I also don't think that the JC gems are irrelevant, since resocketing them into this staff means getting a 9 SP bonus as you mention. That's a really, really strong bonus. Unless resocketing means losing really good bonuses (which it likely won't, since most socket bonuses aren't really that hot), in which case don't resocket them. If you would lose, say, Int or superfluous Hit rating (or negligible Hit/Haste rating), then it's well worth resocketing for 9 SP, easily.

Let's please remember that both Runescribed Blade and Guiding Star are item level 232, rather than 239 like the Staff of Endless Winter. I predict that if there is to be a main hand caster item that drops from a hard mode, with the same item level as the staff, it would at least have the same amount of spellpower and a single socket. Perhaps not as much versatility, but the staff seems more like a healer item (not to begin this argument, it will be looted to whoever it is looted to and will be properly utilized in anyone's hands), and DPS don't really need versatility with our gemming as we basically just straight stack spellpower (with exceptions, of course).

As I said, the example isn't totally equitable. This is yet another reason why.

The only problem I have with the comparison between MH/OH and Staves is the lost hit from my OH, but I suppose that there will be ways to make it up.

Yeah, it can easily be made up on other pieces of gear, but whether or not that means using items that aren't BIS is something that should definitely be a concern.

you guys seriously disappoint me. you are forgetting the most important question: does it glow? and the answer is yes. yes it does. a scintillating blue glow, highly visible, that "crackles" on the staff head and even leaves particle trail.
