It seems like the item is bugged sometimes when fire is asked (the extra button disapear and you lose the buff). Also, 5min cooldown was really unnecessary (it's 5% every 5min)

edit: it happens not only with fire. Maybe it is related to a magic difficulty stuff in the lore. But it looks like a bug

The way it works is that you have to MOVE during cast (yes you can) to catch maximum flying balls you possibly can. If you catch none, the extra button disapear, it's not a bug.

ALSO: other people can catch it (even if not in your group) cast the awakening comp and then cast targeting you with the extra button

I just completed this 01/31/24, here are some tips, this could possibly be a bug, but I can't imagine Blizzard would fix this, since the requirements they put on this item is insane.

You can buy 200 of the cheapest Awakened element, I only saw Frost, Fire, Earth, and Air when doing the quest, so do not buy Order or Decay. You can also just buy 200 of each (Or whatever amount) and just chain complete the quest, getting it done in about 1 minuet instead of saving gold and using a single element.

Queue for the Proving Grounds from your class trainer.

Start a trial (Bronze) and use the item, I did not need to catch any of the falling fire, no movement required... Just stand next to the Panda.

When you get the element matching the Awakened element you bought, use the extra action button.

Yield the Trial (Talk to the panda you used to start it). This resets the item cooldown, allowing you to do it every couple of seconds instead of 5 mins.

This same strategy works with the grip that deals damage to you over time, since you cannot die in the trial you can just keep restarting it and channeling the grip item.
