When you summon Goc there is a friendly NPC to help you. He will end up tanking Goc for you but you cant heal him. Goc is Level 70 and has around 130k HP so you need to burn him down before he kills the friendly NPC.

We didn't need 3 people though, I was a 67 Mage grouped with a 66 Pally and we were able to complete this.

Rexxar will tank for hordes while Baron Sablemane for Alliance . Not sure about hordes though but it was Baron for alliance .

Downed him with a rogue and hunter any myself as a lock, Baron was still over 50% hp .

I tried to summon Goc last night. It keeps telling me the same error message "Needs the Altar of Goc and Goc not to be summoned", even if I stand right next to the Altar and Goc is not around.

I have over 5 bugged group quests, which is OK. The expansion has hundreds of quests and a couple of them may be bugged. :)

Got it to work by making sure I was in a group when starting the event. Group members don't have to be anywhere nearby. Make sure you have enough DPS to get Goc down before Baron dies, as a protection spec pally I had to rely on others in the area doing the quest to help.

Interesting side note, as it is sometimes bugged, it is possible to summon both the Horde and Alliance NPCs at the same time. Instead of fighting Goc, they fight each other and Goc, well, pummels you instead. Fun times.

Baron Sablemane does a great job tanking throughout the whole fight. I was able to complete it (with some bandages) with another Hunter (myself being a Rogue). Not too tough, since Sablemane holds aggro at all times.

A way to work around this bug (Baron Sablemane and Goc spawn but neither start attacking) is by aggroing a mob nearby to Baron Sablemane so he starts attacking the mob. After the mob has been killed Baron Sablemane and Goc will despawn and you can try again. That happened with my group anyway.

Was able to kill Goc solo as 68 warlock. But the fight was so close that the Baron (the guy who appears and tanks Groc) died and therefore the quest didn't complete. You must kill Goc and the Baron must survive to complete.

Someone turned up and helped me in the end but it prob is possible to solo at 68.

Groc is immune to fear but as Baron tanks it's no problem.

Completed by level 66 and Level 69 Hunter. Both of us in majority greens and some blues, finished fight with NPC at 15%.

At somepoint after getting Goc to less than 50%, a dragon the size of Nef spawns and will attack the NPC. Ignore the dragon, and focus all damage on Goc.

An easy way to avoid taking damage and the knockback from his ground smash is right at the end of the cast jump, not only will you avoid the damage, you won't get sent flying either.

I'm not sure it will actually give you credit for this quest if you attempt to solo it. I always make sure Sablemane survives, but never (under ANY circumstances) get credit. Attempted three times so far.

Atempted a couple of extra times, couldn't survuve it or beat it. Either I died, or it didn't work. I think it actually checks whether you're in a group. Ah well, impossible to find groups for these zones on my realm, abandoned this bugged junk.

Just soloed this as a 70 Hunter, BM-spec. Very easy, actually, and I just have blues and greens. Near the end of the fight, Sablemane turns in to a dragon and that seems to turn the tables. Hopefully it's as easy for everyone else.

Bugged the first time I tried it. Baron Sablemane spawned but then disappeared and I couldn't attack Groc. Waited 5 minutes and then soloed the event as a affliction/destruction lock. I had to soulshatter 1/3 of the way through the fight but after that Sablemane held aggro and I went all out. He had about 30% health at the end.

As a 70 shadow priest with fairly nice gear (full Spellstrike/FSW, everything else quested/rep/heroics), this was easily soloable. To avoid pulling aggro from Sablemane, I avoided using SW:D paired with VE to reheal myself, and just went light DPS for the first 10%.

As others have said don't worry about aggro, but do keep in mind when the fight starts Goc runs at you while Baron Sablemane casts his first spell. Was able to take him down first try (although it was very close) soloing him as a ret pally. If you were to try this as well, I found that a Judgement of Light works best, since it will heal Sablemane a bit, and also heals yourself.

He does a stomp periodically which causes damage to melee attackers as well.

I found I wasn't effected by the ground slam when I was at my limit of Mind Flay range and on a slight rise just under the cliff face to the North. This might be dependent on Goc's positioning and Sablemane of course but it was easy to deal with the first time I was punted.

Beware! The comments above about sableman being a great tank made me dps fully and I got crushed by Goc.
I am an arcane L70 mage and arcane gets 40% less aggro but I aggroed Goc very quickly (I had given the Baron some lead but he has low dps compared to a L7O dps in epic gear).
The second time I did it very easily by dpsing VERY SLOWLY, just watching out that Goc's health is always below the Baron's.

Did the quest as a 70 Tankadin. I attempted to solo it several times before, and even though i held aggro for over half the fight once i still wasn't getting credit alone. I had to team up with a 67 DK to do it.
It's probably soloable by a Retadin, but not by a tank.

Easily solo'd a few minutes ago as a 68 Unholy Death Knight.

Once the Baron had aggro, I went all out and had no issues with accidentally pulling aggro. Stayed in Blood Presence the whole time, had a ghoul pet out, and used Gargoyle. Baron only got down to about 40% hp by the end of the fight.

The only real annoyance is the Ground Slam and I just ate it and healed myself back up via Death Strike and healed ghoul pet with Death Coil.

Easily much easier to solo than the previous step (Massacre).

I'm sure people will wonder what the point is to do this questline especially as a DK at 68+ since you can just go to Northrend. I wanted the plate chest because of the hit rating and the fact that there is a distinct lack of easy to acquire (read: solo) chest pieces and if you replaced any of your starter gear with Outland quest items, you'll be heavily lacking in hit rating which becomes especially annoying.

I noticed one thing when i soloed it with my L69 Ret Paladin. If you get aggro like i did, bubble, he will then start hitting Baron again. Seems like i lost all my aggro and i could dps like mad after that until he was dead :S Baron had about 40% of hp when the fight was over.

Soloed as a 65 BM hunter.
Main trick is to disable your pet's auto-cast Growl ability and if done correct you'll never get aggro.
Having a threat add-on like Omen to avoid personal over-aggro helps.
And even if yer threat goes up too high, use a Feign Death to wipe it.
I do have to mention that my hunter had 5 heirlooms (2x Balanced Heartseeker with +15 agil enchant, Upgraded Dwarven Handcannon, Prized Beastmaster's Mantle and Champion's Deathdealer Breastplate) and quite a few BoE blues.
So if yer new and geared with mostly greens it might be tricky, but overall my combined pet and personal dps was arround 325/350 ish. So if you can get that you should be fine.

solo'd as a 67 frost mage..no deaths. They must have seriously nerfed this quest. I have only Outland greens. Just keep a potion for when you get low and 3/4 of the way into the fight pop mirror and you are gold! Sablemane still does a great job tanking just watch out cause the guy will send you flying and it WILL cause a lot of damage, coords are 64,18... After reading the posts here, I thought for sure I would go down in an epic fail, but it is doable! I also got credit for it and ended up with 19k exp!

Safe to say they dumbed this one down. Soloed as a 66 Rogue, just keep recuperate up and let Sablemane do all of the work and it was nothing like the 9 other times expansions past that this guy kicked my butt.

I was able to solo this as a 66 bm hunter
Rdps should be able to solo this as Ground smash hits everyone within about 20 yards and pulls you from where you are standing through goc to about 20 yards on the other side of him, hitting you for about 1.5k at the same time.
don't stand near Sablemane as Goc will occasionally Boulder Volley him which is a very painful aoe.
Sablemane finished on about 50% hp and tanked the whole time. Just make sure that you keep DPS up, because to complete the quest you need to do more than Sablemane (which isn't that hard as he's a caster but uses his melee if he's tanking)
If you are melee i suggest either getting a healer or being very careful about not getting caught in Ground smash.
I would suggest burst damage using DoTs and damage buffs and then running away or popping a cooldown when he uses ground smash.

Soloed with a lvl 67 prot pally, took three tries to get credit. Not sure how I managed it...poisoned my weapon, used cheapo scroll of strength and protection, hit him for all I had. Did not avoid ground stomp. Weapon had just 57.7 dps. Did use some WoG but no other heals.

soloed at lvl 67 as a rogue. this quest should be soloable by anyone in any spec as rexxar can basically kill it for you because he brings a boar and a bird with him to help kill. you can probably sit back and watch him kill groc for you. one thing to note though is if you are going to help kill groc, rexxar is a horrible tank. you have to give him a good 10-15 sec before you lay into groc or else you will pass rexxar's threat. and that is no fun.

Soloed post 4.1 patch as a frost mage. The main problem I had was I didn't let the Baron get enough threat generated before I opened up; as a result Goc made pretty short work of me. The quest still does not reset on death, though, and by the time I had hiked back and resurrected, the Baron was still fighting and doing fine. He can take the punishment, so just watch your threat meter. With that caution, it's quite straightforward and not even difficult.

I just finished this quest and I soloed it (along with Baron Sablemane's amazing help ;)) and I had literally no problem at all. I am a lvl 68 Prot Pally. And only had to revive twice along with using 1 Super Mana Potion. I just thought I'd put in some advice because I was questioning the fight myself but it was fairly simple. Just watch out for when he hits you and sends you flying, try not to aggro any other elite ogres in the area cuz that can just be annoying.

Outland group quests are supposed to have been nerfed in 4.3, so I wasn't expecting to see a 70K mob when I tried to solo him with a level 67 hunter (okay solo is relative as there's me, my pet and the Baron). I needn't have worried. He was no real trouble and seemed to be reasonably easy to kill, despite the fact he kept flinging me around.

The quest was red for me, as a level 65 hunter, but I just successfully soloed him wearing quest greens and blues. I just let the NPC and my pet get aggro for a second and then used all my special abilities and trinkets over the course of probably a 30-40 second fight. Don't be afraid to try it at 65.

Goc now only has about 70k health, he is very easily solo'd but from what I could see, he does not have a cast bar on his knockback any more. If you can not tell from the map shown above, you must use the Sableman's Signet at the Altar of Goc that is located to the right of the tower in Gruul's Lair (or at the points 64, 18) hope this helps. Emboldened by the posts above, I attempted Goc with my level 67 Discipline Priest in quest greens and blues. I used only Mind Blast and Holy Fire (Smite is too slow). It took a long (LONG!) time, but eventually he went down. The Baron kept Goc off of me pretty much the whole time.

Now I have a fancy new bonnet! :-)

It needs to be said at this late date, if you wear mail armor of any kind and you finish this quest, take the Malefactor's Eyepatch as the reward, and don't throw it away, ever. Its one of a kind in game.

I spent at least an hour and a half over 3 days trying to find Goc's Altar so I am going to describe in tedious detail how to find it.
At this point I assume you have found Gruul's Lair and that it shows on your mini-map.
Directly N of the ul in the Gruul's Lair label, there is a marking of a small hut and
directly N of that hut is another slightly larger hut with another building to its E.
If you place yourself just S of that NW hut in Gruul's Lair and are pointing due N, to your left/W you will see Goc's Altar; it's small and tucked kinda in an inconspicuous corner.
It may be difficult to find - you need to be fairly close to see it - it might not show during a quick fly-by. You should look for the "banner", but be aware that there are several similar banners near by.
Once I finally find it, I had no problems (Level 68 Tauren Hunter).
There is already a screenshot of the altar fairly close up; I have submitted a screenshot farther away to help you locate its position. The screenshot should be published @3/16 or 17.
P.S. Goc appears S of the alter.

Not sure if I'm having a glitch or not, but I appeared to be on my own...just me and my pet. I am a level 73 Hunter and judging by everyones comments figured I could take on a level 70 easily. Maybe I missed it, but this guy is a 70 ELITE! and with no apparent help from this "gift", I got him down to about 1/8th heath before I was toast. hhmmmm... Let's try this again..at least I know what I'm up against now.

Baron Sablemane could solo Goc down to about 20% before he dies. Your goal is to make enough damage, so that Goc dies before the Baron does.

Don't get too near, his AE-Stamping-Attack hits you for about 2500 damage

Stop saying it's bugged, it's not. Read the other posts - YOU HAVE TO DO AT LEAST 50% OF THE TOTAL DAMAGE TO GET CREDIT.

It's very easy to kill Goc without doing that, I killed him solo as a 68 BM hunter, Sablemane was at about 10% at the end, didn't get credit.

Came back at 70 with better gear (but not great, just blues/greens), killed him again, got credit.

According to SW Stats I did 52,000 damage, my pet did 21,000, so 73,000 total damage, which is more than 50% (I read somewhere else that Goc has 130,000 HP, so you need to do more than 65,000 total damage).

Soloed the quest at lvl 68 (druid). Went to bear form and took a few blows from the boss. after a while Sableman start doing damage and takes aggro. At that point I heal myself full and start DPS:ing as much as possible can in catform. The goal is to do enough DPS so that Goc dies before Sableman. He does a knockback AOE from time to time that does ~2500 damage. If I got under 3000 hp I heal and shift back to cat. Killed him twice, but didn't get the quest done. Then I invited a random guildie and tried again. Seems that you need to be grouped in order to get the kill.

Horde was doing the quest as i arrived, waited for them to kill him.

Then summoned him myself... they started talking etc. but then he just stood there nothing happened, can't attack him or anything. I bugged the quest once again? ;O

Just solo'd this as a 70 frost mage. I let the Baron grab aggro and hold it for a few seconds. I popped my WE and started attacking with everything I had. I never pulled aggro and it was just a straight dps fight. Very nice.

To be able to get the kill u have to do more then 50k damage,tried him 4 times,the first i died once,so dps was pretty low and Baron died,the second time,i killed him and Baron was alive but didnt get the kill,the third time i abandoned it cause dpd was too low,so i could get another shot,4th time,threw everything i had on him,did 52k and got the kill:P patience and tactics is the way to go, enchancement shammie btw, blues and greenies equiped, hope that helps guys.

You have to make 50% or more dmg on gruul to get killcredit (like with every single mob out there which is attacked by npcs and you)
Thats the mystery behind "bugged for soloing"...

me as 65 affliction lock and a 66 beastmastery hunter friend of mine nailed this on 2nd try, hes immune to fear and stun effects so dont waste the time, just dps the heck out of him.

Someone must've summoned him and failed when we showed up. He's sat here and we cant attack him nor summon Baron. Weve been here for about 20 mins now, hasnt despawned.

a alliance group kill him just as we got there so one of are people in the group tryed to summon him and nothing happen after wait 3 sec everyone left and i stayed behind and keep trying about 5 mins maybe this is what happen

i keep blowing the horn and nothing but when everything despawn i blew the horn again and he was summon got him to 5% and die

any ways WAIT TILL EVERYTHING DESPAWNS then stand on the alter and blow the horn it should work for you GL

Solo'd him as a lvl 70 BM hunter... easy kill. I do believe you have to out-dps Sablemane to get the credit. It's pretty standard work. Flew in, popped him, let Sablemane get aggro and just threw everything I had at him, including a couple trinkets, Bestial Wrath and all that. I was mostly in blue and green gear. I think Sablemane was till at about 20 or 30% hp when Goc went down.

You summon goc and Baron Sablemane (who assists you) and the fight begins...
Half way through, Sabelemane reveals his true self (Father of all the dead dragons at Dragons End) and Goc is pretty much orc chow.

Its a lvl 70+ quest with a suggestion of 3 players, we did it with 5 lvl 66s and it was pretty easy.

To the loreplayers, his transformation is either bugged, or my group killed Goc too fast, but it didn't occured, which is kind of a shame for an rpg game. Hope they fix it.

Just did this on my warlock. I died early in the fight, released, and ran back. Fight was still going on so I ressed, resummoned my felguard and finished the fight. Still got credit.
