Once you reach the northern ogre camp containing elites right outside of Gruul's Lair you can begin killing any of said ogres for the key for the cage. The cage can be found by walking straight forward into the camp and just looking up and to the left a little. On a side note, the raptors and ogres paired on patrol are not linked pulls; this leaves alot of possibilites open for solo kiting.

Important to note that after you do finally get the key (took about 25-30 ogres for me), you have to climb to the veeeery tip of one of the nearby spikey-rock-things to open the cage. THEN you can summon Spirit.

Oh, augh. I tried to solo this as a 66 Warlock.. and it can be done, but it takes a long time. Chain fear + health funnel + 11 Felguards + 27 Ogres + 67 minutes later, I got my key. There's not much room to fear kite inside, and more than once I had to turn tail and 'git. I strongly suggest you take a group in the interest of preserving your patience and sanity.

This quest is Blizzard's idea of sadistic humor. They put you into a group, tell you to go kill some ogres and find a shiny key and save they day!! Little don't they tell you though, except for the fact that these ogres hit like trucks, and the key has about a 3% drop rate. So you will want to have some time on your hands. I spent an hour on this stupid quest when everyone else in my quest bailed out. Good game blizzard, I hope you have fun poking needles into your voodoo dolls.

You need to kill the elite ogres in the north east part of the valley (by Gruul's Lair) until you get the key to drop, then use the key on the hanging cage inside the camp, then use the whistle to summon Spirit. It's not entirely clear, but once you have the key, you right click the cage first, then after the door opens right click the whistle in your inventory to complete the quest.

Cage Location: 65.7, 20.1 (walk up the long spike to get to it)

I did this quest solo as a 70 hunter today (Feb 21, 2007) and the key dropped on my third elite ogre. In response to all the droprate concerns above, I am not sure if the droprate was changed, or if it just looks low on the stats because it only drops if you have the quest.

The elite ogres have approximately 25,000 health and hit for around 400-600 damage. They do a Thunderclap in melee range, and go berserk (with slow movement speed) when at low health so they can be kited with relative ease.

That may be true, but you don't have to open the cage. I went about 3/4 of the way up it, simply because it's safe in that spot. All you have to do is get close to the cage and use the whistle .. then Spirit will open it.

if you are adament you want to solo this one there is a sweet spot behind a hut at 66,28. there are 3 easy to pick off ogres in the area, just kite them to safe area behind hut and do what you do, fear kite, pet tank etc.

Soloed this with a 69 Paladin. I snuck into the area on the right side and found a 67 Bladespire Enforce on his own, killed him (using lots of healing and long-cooldown abilities) and got the key. Then I left, mounted up and made a dash for the cage. I managed to get out of combat behind the main building, but had two ogres to get past to get up the spike. I ran up it, died, and then spawned right by the cage and called the spirit to open it, quest done.

70 Combat rogue solo'd it got key on first drop. only stunlocked no cd's. and still was left standing with 3.5k hp.

And the NPC was DND.... Spirit 2 uses the key to open the cage.

It's really easy to solo with a shadow Priest 67. You just need the time. As soon as you get the key then go inside the camp on the left side there is a cave.. Just go close to it and just the whistle. The quest is completed well done. The drop rate is really really bad for me.. i did about 60-70 ogre kills..

I just spent 2 hours grinding solo for the key. 70 feral druid, it wasnt fun or easy but possible. You will question your sanity by the time this quest is done. I killed the repeated mobs over and over and finally at 63,19 a enforcer on the top of the tower dropped it. Gl, Blizzard dropped the ball on this one.

- The raptors and ogres ARE linked, whoever said they weren't is wrong.
- The Bloodmaul Ogres will NOT help you kill these guys, don't try.

The ogres are crowd controllable(fear, roots, slowing effects), which means that they definitely are possible to solo for quite a few classes despite the fact that it will take some time.

This was soloable as a 70 protections paladin and I assumed I was going to get the key on the first few kills. 40 ogres later the key finally dropped, took a few deaths and wasted pots before I got the hang of it. About 3 minutes per kill adding up to 2 hours for a quest that cost me mluch more gold than the juicy 10g reward you get from this. The rest of the chain was simple and rewarding but I think the Blizzard developers feed on our torment and suffering. Why else would they have quests like this in the game? The beta testers can hardly say, yes, good job Blizzard, I really had fun mindlessly killing ogres for hours to become 10g richer. They are evil. Or this is just their way of making pointless things feel more rewarding as the satisfaction when that damn key finally drops is immense. That way they get us addicted to doing these pointless things. Either way they are evil sadists. My head hurts.

Soloable for 70 prot warriors aswell, just have shieldblock up all the time and keep some rage in store when fighting against caster ogres to interrupt their flamestrikes with shieldbash or concussion blow.

This guys arnt that hard they are solo able ( 68 hunter marksman ) you just need to have mend pet on all the time and when your pet gets on low hp u just frezze trap the orges and heal your pet white bandadge and the kill the orge. Not very hard but take a wile . i solod theese guys for an hour but didnt get and then i was out of water =/ .

As far as the drop rate is concerned:

I got the key on my very first kill. While looking for help for the next quest (Showdown), I found a person that needed to do the key quest, so we started doing it again. It took us 38 ogre kills to get his key. So despite my getting the key on the first kill, the drop rate is not always good. I'm guessing the true rate is less than 10%.

Nice trick I found out for soloing these as a mage. All I did was sheep the ogre and the raptor would keep on walking. Once the raptor was a decent distance away I could pull the ogre without aggroing the raptor.

I got this key to drop on my first Bladespire Enforcer kill, Solo'd as a 70 rogue in T4/T5 without any cooldowns, leaving combat with 1k health remaning. I didnt read ALL of these posts but at 66,21 I had trouble finding the cage. It is hovering in the air next to the Hut there and leokk is a wyvern within the cage, after i got the key I flew up and landed on the top of the cage, used the whistle, easy gold. Hope this helps.

Soloed it as a 67 frost mage. U don't need to get close to the chage, just use the whistle and the bird will fly and free the wyvern, but the drop rate for the key is bad, i had to kill 20+ elites :(.

One easy way to separate the raptors out of the patrolling pairs. You need one person who is King/Queen of the Ogres. Have them run up to a patrolling pair and spam /dance (while targeting the ogre). The ogre will start dancing, the raptor will keep walking. Keep spamming /dance until the raptor is far enough away (they'll stop dancing a couple seconds after your last emote), then pull the raptor out of range to kill. Then, pull and kill the ogre solo.

just use the usual combo of seal of righteousness, judgement of righteousness, holy shock and consecration
heal with FoL and they'll go down pretty fast

however, i would suggest fighting the battle mages over the other, they can be taken head-on by a holy paladin and you'll require little healing

killed about 5 and then i teamed up with a resto shammy, with who i killed at most 10 and then the key dropped..

suppose we got lucky there? not sure, but i didn't think this had a bad droprate

a good tactic for resto sham/holy paladin team ups is having the paladin tank(regardless of health) and let the resto shammy keep earth shield on the pally(perhaps downrank to waste less mana) let the paladin bash away while the resto shammy nukes with lightning bolts

earth shield can easily keep a plate user of level 70 up since the mobs hit about 350 on 10k armor

didnt heal durring pulls, only after and had to drink up after each. mages are deffinaly easier then enforcers and the chef seems to have a ridiciously fast attack speed (couldnt get him down). deffinatly NOT the quest to pick as your last one to finish up before bed. been at it for probally 20 mins so far and no key. =<

btw, the beer doesn't work on these guys. it was worth a try though. too bad
but maybe taking a break to check if it would did help XD 2 pulls after i came back with the usless beer from the other end of the zone the damn key finally drops =3

Soloable as a mage, and im assuming as a hunter, as you can easily kite them. They do about 600 damage per hit (on a mage) so they should be pretty easy to solo if you are 70. If you aren't 70, and are not a kiter, then you should get a buddy but it is still a pretty easy quest.

Solo'd this with little problems as a sub rogue. Drop rate does indeed stink. Killed probably close to 30 before getting the key to drop. There is a nice little area behind the hut that the cage is attached to, and to the right of the chef behind the hut, where you can easily pull 1 at a time. I cycled through the chef, and 2 of the enforcers. 1 enforcer spawns right in front of this lil safe area and the other just down the hill in front of a hut on your right.

Technique for the sub rogue was fairly straight forward, premed, ss, ambush, shiv, rupture. Always kept Ghost Strike up when the CD was down and used evasion when it was necessary. Kept crippling on my offhand for shiv and it allowed me to back away enough to bandage if necessary. Primarily racked combo points up with hemo/shiv always capping with a rupture when points were racked. Worked quite well. Think I used maybe 5 heal potions the entire time I was out there.

Solo this as a 70 demonology warlock. I had just ding 70 so i didn't had any special gear. I simply pull back the group at the entrance (hadn't my flying yet), fear the ogre, kill raptor, while my Felguard was tanking. Use health funnel a LOT. Put curse on, maybe a drain life or two, then HEALTH funnel.

The raport have less life than the ogre, but i would say they hit a little big harder. not sure though.

After this pull i enter the camp and killing the ogre alone was a piece of cake. Got the key on 12th killed or more.

Just did this quest on my own with my 68 Druid. I used flight form to get to a Bladespire Enforcer on top of the tower near the cage and beat him down with the help of my Treants. Dropped the key for me on first kill. Then i flew to the rooftop next to the cage and used the whistle. Done.

set out a freeze trap, single shot the rapator to pull into the trap
Bashed crap out of the ogre
had to freeze trap the raptor again
Killed the ogre, started bashing the raptor but my poor gorilla kicked it
Feign death.
Got lucky, key dropped
Jump on the mount and go to just below the cage
Feign death to loose all the followers
blow the whistle
Mount and got the hell out of there.
Note: i died a number of times before i got it to work, Bloody auto shot would break the trap.

I used my flying mount to fly from Ruuan Weald to the ogre camp. The key dropped on my very first kill. It was a tough fight and had to heal several times before I dropped the ogre and his raptor. Once he was down he dropped the key. I healed up and drank then got on my flying mount and flew to the rooftop of the tower where the cage is hanging. I landed on the rooftop with the cage just in front and below of my position. Used the whistle and got the message "Quest Complete". Mounted back on my flying mount and flew out. Completed as level 70 Prot Paladin.

Don't ask me how, but pulled an ogre and the raptor just kept walking(just outside the gate) Pulled him up a ramp, droped FireEletot and let it get aggro, Lightingbolt away but be sure to heal the elemental, don't want the tank to croak now do we =P.

From there, I had to get through the 4 elites(two ogres two raptors) at the gate... Reincarnate....
Ghostwolf and run through, fast. If you have a free action potion, all the better, just get through far enough how ever you can be it pop a health pot something. reincarnate, and you shouldn't enter combat... Dance around the ogres, up the spike blow the whistle and get the hell out of there(my hearth is set to Thunderlord Stronghold so just ARecalled out)

I just solo'd this as a level 69 BM Hunter.
The key dropped on the first kill.
To complete this quest I only had to kill 1 mob (an elite for the key), then run underneath the cage. Simple, quest complete.

I'm sure any class could complete this if they use up any of their cooldowns.

There are two ogres and a raptor at the NE edge of Gruul's Lair which can be individually killed. Kill the raptor first, then pull the ogre chef when the enforcer wanders away. If necessary, then kill the enforcer. The key dropped from the chef for me. Getting to the area is simple with a flying mount. I've not tried on foot, but it does appear possible to go north from the meeting stone to safely reach the raptor. The quest was rather straightforward for my level 70 hunter with a flying mount.

Easy peasy as a 67 BM Hunter..buff up your pet with some extra protection scrolls (if you have them) and go to the tower with loc 63-19. In my case there was only one elite Ogre and fairly easy to put down solo. Lucky for me the Key dropped at 1st kill. Fly to the cage, land on top and use the whistle....done. Repeat if the key doesn't drop the first time and watch the adds.....2 elite ogre's is way tomuch at lev 67 :-)

just did this solo as a 67 Subtlety Rogue with average BC quest reward gear, and Deathblow X11s. I should note that I finished the fight with 187hp. with the new changes, I was amazed by my success with a simple stun lock, one super heal potion and some bleed effects with a wound poison on both blades. Soloed this with a lvl 66 destro Warlock.

At the very back of the northern cliffs there is a lone mob. I just took this mob down, using my Voidwalker as a tank and got the key. Ended up with one third health left.

I then flew up to the top of the cage, because there was a mob underneath the cage, and blew the whistle. That dismounted me and the Voidwalker materialised on the ground, aggroed the mob and died. I couldn't mount and fly away because I was in battle. I couldn't hit the mob because he was under the cage I was standing on, but he could hit me so I died.

Might have been better going for the mob under the cage initially but I thought I would get adds there.

Just solo'd lvl 71 DK. If you go to 66,22 in the northeastern point of the camp, there are a few Ogres with no raptors. Thus, you can Solo these guys. But, they are pretty powerful for lvl 67 elites. I have beaten lvl 70 that were easier. They hit hard. Got Key on first kill!

Oh yeh, don't unmount on top of the cage. Something invisible attacked and killed me.

The above post is the easiest way. Do not try to fight your way through the roaming elite pairs.
As a level 69 warrior, I couldn't take both elites down at the same time for two tries before checking in here.

If you go to the northeast next to the cave opening, there are several individual ogres that you can solo to get the key.

Once the key is obtained, fly to the top of the cage and blow the whistle.

That's it.

Soloed one of the mages as a 66 Sub Rogue. Opened with a cheap shot, then got 5CP up and hit him with a Kidney shot. When he went to cast his flame attack I interrupted it with a kick. He was down to about half when KS wore off, I then blinded him and healed up with first aid before finishing the job.

Easily soloable as a 68 frost mage. I got the Wyvern key on the first kill and then just flew up and landed on the roof of the hut that the wyvern cage is attached to. Summon the spirit and voila! :)

If you're not 70 group up. Kill the elites right by Gruul's. IF THEY'RE NOT ELITE THEY DON'T DROP. I killed about 100 before i read this... about 7 afterwards.

First, sneak into the Bladespire hold. You can avoid the guards with easy wallclimbing on the right side of the wall. Inside the hold, ogres and raptors are separated and all can be soloed. Raptors were the hardest to solo for me, and the chief I tried killed me but they are rare and can easily be avoided. Enforcers are quite soloable and battlemages too (just avoid the flamestrike that hits for 1500 fire). Once you have the key, come close to the hanging cage and kill the enforcer there (be careful for the patrol though!) then release Spirit and quest is done.
You can also get the key on the enforcers outside of the hold, but they are hard to pull without their raptors.

Haha, was doing this quest today with a druid (key dropped after the 5th or 6th ogre) and we got to the area where Leokk is suspended up above in the cage. Anyway, we were both wtf about the whole thing because we had no idea how to get up there in order to open the cage. It took us a few minutes to realize that we needed to call Spirit using the whistle we had. We felt like noobs. :P

soloed as 68 lock its easy if u got some skill to keep the mobs away from u.they hit really hard so i fearlocked them.as affliction dots made the job but have to say they dont go down easy.but for those who can handle 1 mob at a time go behind the building at 66.20 and range pull mobs

Been trying this as a 68 hunter for about 2 hours now. Easy to solo the enforcers with healing gear and mending pet when necessary but haven't had the key drop yet and must have killed about 30 of them. Just bad luck I guess, but it is definitely soloable for hunters.

As a mage I had no problem killing those ogre. I killed about a douzen before the key droped. Once u have to key just go under the cage, wich isint far in, and use the wistle.

Funny how everyone says that theres a bad drop rate. Maybe I'm just lucky but I flew in and droped by one of the first little huts near the cage and killed an Enforcer and got the key right away.

Make sure you check your "keyring" before giving up ont he quest. You may have picked it up along the way and not have known it.

You do not need to kill mob below cage to do rescue. Just stand behind the ramp and blow whistle.
Also getting inside the area as solo is easy if you are willing to die 2 or 4 times ;7

I'm killing ogres for 3 days now and no key. I killed over 200 mobs, got greens, cloth, etc, but absolutely no key. If you want do this quest, good luck, you'll need it alot. VERY low drop rate. Sure, you can get it on first kill, as anyone can get an epic drop on first kill.
Even so you want do this quest, find a group. It's VERY frustrating to solo it. Takes time and you may spend several days until you get this damn key.

Biggest waste of time. Lost count of how many elites I killed and key never dropped. If you are lvl 70 and questing just for cash, don't wast your time on this one.

The ogres are easy to single pull because raptors dont attack if you pull an ogre from a distance. Also there is a big open area to the right of the entrance that is perfect for fear kiting if your a warlock =)

The drop rate for this quest is ridiculous! Me and three others were there for almost two hours killing elite ogres, and never got the drop once. We were killing pretty fast too, so I figure we killed at least 100 without a drop.

Well being on a server with a terrible horde:ally player ratio, I didnt find a group. So I braced myself for some long grinds on these elites, I pulled an enforcer and luckily dropped the key.

I did this quest in a group of two, the key dropped after the 5th or 6th kill. The person who had the key in my group used the whistle, and i received credit for the quest also.

So like others on here I spent hours killing mobs, receiving no key. In despair, and just to piss him off, I summoned Spirit anyway. And he went up and released Lerokk, completing the quest. I was aghast. I looked in my keychain and there was an empty spot. Somehow, sometime in the past, I had received that key, although I can't remember ever killing those ogres before.

Ok, for those that cant find this quest, after you spawn the spirits, you have to wait for them to stop talking, then the center one offers the quest to talk to Rexxar. If you run off they eventually despawn, you'll need to wait for someone else to turn in the quest that spawns them

It is strongly recommended to complete ALL Og'rila prequests, so all BEM ogres become neutral and it's much easier. Droprate for the key is hopeless.

Pretty terrible drop rate, so yeah, you've been warned. Went in with a group, after an hour, we all gave up.

Dunno if we were just lucky tonight, April 8th, but a group of 3 of us started killing the elites working our way back to the cage, which is on the left side of the road by the way. We killed about 8 elites working back there to Leokk and got 2 keys to drop out of those 8 kills. Incidently, we only needed 1 key. When the first person in our group summoned the birdie, we all 3 got credit for the quest. Hope that helps for those having a hard time getting a key. Make sure you are killing elite ogres outside grulls lair, and you only need 1 key per group.

U need to do all quests in Thunderlord to unlock a spirit that gives u quest to talk to Rexxar. Good luck

I am a level 70 druid. I have completed all the quests in thunderlord, Ruuan Weald, as well as Mok'Nathal Village. I have not been able to receive this quest, I do see 3 spirits there that appeared after I completed a quest chain. Yet I am unable to get this quest.

tried to solo this as a 69 shadowpriest. My first pull i got an ogre alone and killed it, but no key. Second i used MC on a ogre and used it to fight a raptor near it. The raptor totally kicked the orge's ass, but MC wore off and i ended up getting owned. the ogre had like 50 health left, cause i had barely missed Shadow word: death and ended up killing myself with 1k damage. anyways...i saw a 70 shammy lfg for showdown, and i told him that if he helped me find the key id do showdown with him. he came over, second kill in we got it. when we got to showdown however, the whole thing glitched. Rexxar never showed up and the boss wouldnt friggin despawn. So oh well, the shammy helped me for nothing. yey!

lvl70 afflic/destro lock. Engaged Bladespire Enforcer, loaded up DoTs, switch to health funnel on VW. Ogre down to 75% health, suddenly pops back to 100% and after a pause standing still, VW loses and can't regain aggro even after I stop casting entirely and hit soulshatter. WTH?

Per others in this thread I should have been able to solo this mob and looked liek I was doing so until whatever bug took over.

It recommends a group of 3, but good luck getting the key to drop. I had myself, 70 demon warlock, and a 70 hunter and we spent about an hour killing with no luck. We ungrouped and the hunter left and I thought I would give soloing a try as mentioned previously in this thread. I got the key on the second kill. It looks as though if you solo kill one of the ogres the drop % goes way up.

My 1 cent, keeping the other for gas.

Confusing thing is just that the area where you have to kill the "Bladespire"-Elites is near the "Bloodmaul Camp" and not - as many of the previous writers have thought - the "Bladespire Hold"

Like one just said before, only Elite-Bladespires drop the keys. I killed three Enforcers (the fat ones with their cute little raptors :X) and found the key. You can pull the Ogres without aggroing the Raptors!

So you can quite easily solo this quest. Especially as a Druid :P

i have been killing 2 ogres just outside of gruul's lair. mages are the easiest to solo as a MM hunter. ive been going there for 3 days now, only about 20 min per session. still no key drop. so easier if you get a group and just wipe the whole place out, then maybe it will drop.

Kind of hard ogre's we got the key after a few droped from a enforcer. Cage is at 65,20 if you standing on ground look above your head at that loc good luck.

but these ogres have a lvl 67 elite raptor on the side, like a doggie almost all the time! are there any ogres on their own? ( i found one after a long wait)

The key dropped off an enforcer 3rd kill, the cage is hanging from the building at 65, 20, blow your whistle and the quest is done.Druid, Mage, Warrior. 10 min.

I think you are a bit confused! only elite ogres drop the key not the ordinary ones.i got it from an enforcer.65,22 all over the place.this is for those who complained that they kill 2000 ogres!

As a lowly geared 70 rogue my only advise if you really want to solo this part is to go for the battlemages only. The rest hit too hard, even with CDs.

You need to get the key (which has a really low drop rate). It seems like the mobs aren't "linked" per say, but they will call over friends (e.g. when a raptor walks by, it will join the fight). Once you have the key, stand under Leokk's cage (65.7, 20.1) and use the Spirit's Whistle (looks like an Inscribed Scrollcase).

If you find yourself doing this in 2022 and you are surprised at the lack of elites in the area worry not. I have the answer for you. All those elites are now non-elites. I have killed at least 40 Bladespire Enforcers and Bladespire Battlemages until one of them dropped the key. You just have to go around the area next to Gruul's Lair and kill the Bladespire ogres. Might take a while.

At the southernmost end of the area where the elites are there is a wide open space to the right that is completely empty of mobs where you can kite stuff forever. I was able to solo a few of the enforcers + raptors by kiting them around that area before lvl 70 but it wasn't time efficient so I gave up and came back to it at lvl 70.

At lvl 70 as an arcane/frost mage in mostly ilvl 115 gear/a couple kara epics I was able to solo an enforcer in around 40s. The enforcers/raptors tend to move around together so I would sheep the raptor, start off with a frostbolt on the enforcer then nova and blink away. Then I would pop cds and burst the enforcer with arcane blast, cone of cold/kite until nova or blink was up again to get some space to continue arcane blast spam etc. Once the enforcer was dead, I was usually far enough away from the sheeped raptor that I would already have dropped combat. Rinse and repeat.

Slay Bladespire ogres to get the Wyvern Cage Key. Once you have it, go to the Wyvern Cage and use Spirit's Whistle to summon Spirit, who will unlock the cage to free Leokk.

Shortly after my arrival in the mountains, I came under attack by a group of Bladespire ogres.

Though I fought free of them, and slew many, they took my wyvern, Leokk, captive. Spirit has found him, locked in a cage in the heart of the Bladespire encampment outside of Gruul's lair.

One of the ogres must carry his key. Find it and Spirit can use it to unlock Leokk's cage.

You will find the encampment at the north end of the Daggermaw Canyon down below.
