Oh, wait! "Make a vain attemp to open puzzle box"? Not "summons guardian of yogg saron"? Not "Summons Infernal to fight by your side"? It means only one thing - It Makes a vain attemp to open the puzzle box!

WH has this under Combat pets because it summons NPC that whishpers to you. ANd Infernal (along with imp) is Blizz´s favourite model for invisible/credit NPCs, for example, DRW has it in its 3D model, too

I got this and i try to open it every chance i get as i travel around diggin.

All it does is wisper wierd things to me like " There's a Lamb lost in the Dark Wood" and "He sleeps in the Lost Tomb and waits" or "do you still dream of the seven eyed beast". nothing makes sense and i haven't managed to open it yet if that is possible at all.

Anyone else find it funny that you assemble fragments into an unopenable box? that means YOU were the one who put it together, couldn't you disassemble it to get inside if it was in pieces in the first place?

Just finished making this all of two seconds ago, and I only have one thing to say about this item, this item is awesome..

Gotta love the kinda disturbing (Imo) phrases that get whispered to you, just wish it was easier getting Nerubian fragments, but oh well, it's worth it in the end. :)

Oh yeah, after I got it the next artifact that popped up was, believe it or not the Blessing of the Old Gods, so if anyone was wondering, it is possible for another rare to appear under the same Race after you've just made one, thought I'd just mention that. :) (Sorry about not knowing how to link either :P)

After spending three days in Northrend to get this I find it is totally worth it, having been in love with Lovecraftian lore for the last 17 years. It whispers me sweet nothings and looks fantastic in my bag.

Now, I really want to open this. I wish it could be done. I want it to play the music of Erich Zann, suck me into another dimension to be mind swapped with a Yithian and give me a silver key so I can finally enter unknown Kadath. I want to fly on the wings of the star spawn, to have my brain put on a cylinder and carried on the wings of the fungi from Pluto, teleported to the Leng plateau and carried by a dimensional shambler back to Earth, put on an altar in R'lyeh to be eaten by squid-face himself. Until there was nothing left of me and my character permanently deleted.

Sad, yes, but totally worth it.

After grinding on this for nearly 5 hours, I finally have my first Nerubian rare. In the time it took to gather the 104 fragments and 3 Obelisks, I gathered almost exactly 300 Vrykrul fragments + 6 of their Runesticks.

Once completed I macro'd the box to my Survey spell. If I'm going to go insane grinding these rares I may as well have some company.

I'd just like to address, If you are not receiving a text whisper, Right click on your chat log, Go to settings and make sure you have Boss Whispers and Emote Whispers boxes Checked. But at the moment I'm having a problem with sound were if I spin my camera around I can slightly get a glimpse of what he's saying but it's very chunky so it's untranslatable. But other than that I cannot hear the sound he makes.

I'm not sure if this has been said already (I didn't read the downrated comments). Yesterday I finally completed the box, having managed to avoid slashing my wrists at the atrocious spawn rate of Nerubian digsites. If I never see another Vrykul artifact it'll be million years too soon.

At any rate, I clicked it a few times, then put it in my bank along with the other rares. Today, when digging up a troll digsite in Tanaris, I suddenly hear "Give in to your fear" coming from my speakers. And I didn't even have the box with me! Looks like the reach of the Old Gods is long indeed.

I'll go out on a limb here and say, that the box is giving us clues about a coming raid encounter. Yeah, I said it - but think about it for a moment. While questing in Vashj'ir you encountered multiple clues that the Twilight's Hammer are working together with an ancient power (with tentacles), himself was corrupted by an Old God, so it falls in the realm of possibility, that we will face yet another Old God after C'Thun and Yogg-Saron. How Yoggies Puzzle Box can know about the stuff I am about to deduce is above me, but hey - we're talking Old Gods

Old God X may be below Vashj'ir, at the bottom of the ocean.

There is no sharp distinction between the real and the unreal.
Yogg-Saron showed, that Old Gods do like to tamper with our minds - Old God X will probably do something similar.

Maybe, there will be a Phase in the encounter of Old God X where everyone is alone, fighting something, avoiding something - who knows.

Maybe Old God X has some connection to sleep - Emerald Nightmare, anyone?

You know when you whisper to a name that doesnt exist (or not created) it says "no player named "..." is currently playing." OR you cant whisper to any items that i know.

But you can actually whisper back to this item by saying /w Puzzle_Box_of_Yogg-Saron. It doesnt turn you back (maybe i couldnt find how to) but hey still you can have a conversation with a box!

This could very well mean Karazhan, seeing as though there were 2 versions of Kara, both the tower you see, and the mirror image that lies below, as well as the fact that it is stated that is lies on a nexus of most, if not all the ley lines in Azeroth.

While I have yet to reach a high enough archaeology level, I have been leveling it primarily for this epic Lovecraft reference. Remember, Cthulhu still waits dreaming, and Yog-Sothoth still holds the key to this mystery. Next comes Zoth-Ommog through N'Zoth. How have our characters stayed sane for so long when on a planet so corrupted?

Algalon had the right idea, planetary origination...but the Old Gods have been playing our characters semi-like cards.

TL;DR - The maddening whispers are epic, even if they hinder our sanity.

I know a lot of people see this as useless, but this was one of the only items I wanted from archeology. I'm a lover of all things creepy or weird and this puzzle box has to be one of the cooler items in game, especially if you get all of the references. I think it would be kind of neat if it gave you some kind of debuff that gradually drove your character insane and after using it X amount of times you lose control of your character for 5 seconds or something.

Whilst I suspect that you currently can't open it, the box merely says 'Extremely difficult to open' --> anything that is defined through difficulty is (or at least in this case should be) possible to open, otherwise it'd be impossible to open and consequently not labelled with a difficulty.

i have an reason to belive that n'zoth was in the well of eterinty or the "well" for those who have read ,the sundering you know the beggining when tentacles comes out of it and the well takes shape.nozdormu describes it as an evil wich arent demons. and when the sundering really happened ( azeroth torn apart) azhara and the highborne was rescued by something in the sea that was right UNDER the well .

Perhaps it will only open for Yogg-Saron himself, use this item while fighting him in Ulduar, maybe something will happen...

Also "There is no sharp distinction between the real and the unreal." appears to relate to something Mindbender Gur'sha says, "Is this reality?" The whole idea of this item seems to be to depress or drive whoever tries to open it insane, as the Old Gods themselves do when you fight them. Perhaps created to be a final act of vengeance to linger on as Yogg-Saron's maddening presence.

I have wondered if this thing can be opened at all -- I've been clicking on it regularly since getting it and seeing the creepy quotes ... today, however, while in Southern Barrens, I clicked on it and without the sky-color change or any other warning, Deathwing hits the area with his usual fire and death. Meanwhile, no creepy statement from the box.

Certainly, this could have been pure coincidence; but it would fit (sorta) the Box's statements.

Alright, I solved the clues of the Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron. This is an epic item that is "Extremely difficult to open" because it is an extremely difficult location that you have to get to in order to open it. Notice how the box has about 10 sec. delay before it whispers a clue? That delay is there because the item is actually having to find its location and see if it is correct. If it didn't open it would just spit out a random 'clue' as soon as you clicked it. With that said, here is my breakdown of the important clues:
1. At the bottom of the ocean even light must die.
-The location is at the bottom of the ocean. The deeper you go, the darker it gets. So all the way down.
2. Even death may die.
-This would imply that even when you are dead you can die, which is the case with fatigue effect.
3. You will all be alone in the end.
-The end refers to death and your spirit. You will not be able to reunite the two after death, thus a spirit resurrection would be required.
4. All places, all things have souls. All souls can be devoured.
-The great sea is known for devouring souls. All places touch the great sea and all souls that going into it dies.
5. You resist. You attempt to cling to your life as if it actually matters. You'll learn.
-This clue means you won't be able to survive so don't even try. Just get to the location and open the box and let death take you.
6. In the sunken city, he lays dreaming.

-This means by default you won't be able to get there without some kind of enhancement. Suggests underwater breathing potions, faster swimming, survival spells, etc.
9. The giant rook watches from the dead trees. Nothing breaths beneath its shadows.
-Around this location are shadows of what appears to be dead trees. It's actual the abandon reef's shadows that appear as dead trees all over, which is where you want to start.

-This implies swimming down into the dark cold sea.

-The panic you will once you click to opening the box on the brink of death. Do it in time, you will be in peace. Good luck with your adventure.

for all those wandering the quotes are ALL from H P Lovecraft Books, altough some can be a little changed, but some, like Even Death May Die, is exactly how it appears on books. This one in special is from The Doom that Came to Sarnath i think: '' There's no death which can eternally lie, And with strange Aeons even death may die"

Awesome item, and great references to several of Lovecraft's books. For example, "Even death may die" is a part of a quote from the Nameless City. The bottom of the ocean is a reference to Cthulhu who sleeps in his underwater city of R'lyeh. I don't think these are at all clues to any new raid or encounter, but rather have been included simply as an homage to HP Lovecraft himself.

Good god, don't people read classic literature anymore? The whole concept of the old gods is FROM the Cthulhu Mythos, this has been openly stated by the devs! People on here are trying to find connections to Sunken temple and stuff! HAHA!
The only "connection" there is: Rl'yeh, the forgotten dead city AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN, where Cthulhu, an ELDER GOD, lies DEAD but DREAMING. That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons even death may die. Read more books.

I had went to the location mentioned in the latest comment and was able to ask a GM about it. It apparently are the remains of Whale Sharks and a Large Pearl.

I think i know where you can open the box.I dont have it,so if someone can verify the place and then post a reply,it would be awesome.In deepholm,silvermarsh(right from the earthen temple) there is water that adds a fatigue effect(even death may die),and also deepholm is a place very deep in water,right? also there are black spiders with exactly 7 eyes!so i really think this is the place.
