This and every other engineering helmet is exactly on par with other ilevel 359 helmets, in terms of stats budget.

However, what this provides is the benefit of going for the best itemization possible through the cogwheel. The current options are:

* , Parry Rating +208.
* , Mastery Rating +208.
* , Expertise Rating +208.
* , Haste Rating +208.
* , Hit Rating +208.
* , Critical Strike Rating +208.
* , Spirit +208 (this is the only Cogwheel that provides a stat).
* , Dodge Rating +208.

Also, remember that engineering helmets get 9000 ilevel points for being pure awesome.

I was wondering what these would look like on the Worgen, yet it appears that the model viewer doesn't support Worgen helms. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

I just put +208 hitrating and +208 expertise in for Fury dps, but dont get +20 strength socket bonus.

anybody got idea?

if you're lucky to get some tank helm Raid drops early on, then its gonna be short mileage...

The way I'm looking at this... Engineering got screwed.
If you compare this to a non-engineering ilvl 359 helm, the differences are:
-2x secondary stats
-1x color socket
-10 primary stat socket bonus
+2x cogwheel sockets

When you look at the cogwheel stats, they are equivalent to the secondary stats which would already be on another helm. If we cancel the two out, we are left with:
-1x color socket
-10 primary stat socket bonus

Whereas other professions yield roughly +80 primary stat, engineering gives you -50 primary stat (maybe a little less depending on socket color).
There is a 130 primary stat discrepancy :(
And no, not BiS at all. The utility and accessibility are nice, but this is not great even at release.

Disagree completely.

First of all, you're valuing these too low. Compare these to the other plate non-set helms of ilvl 359; there are only three alternatives. These goggles have between 20 and 42 more strength than the rest and cogwheels add up to 20 more of the secondary stats. Comparing socket bonuses, the +20 str on this is probably not as good for tanks as any other helms' bonuses, but it's almost definitely better for dps than mastery or haste - as people have already said, the socket bonus is relatively small, but 20 of a primary stat is still probably better than 30 of a secondary stat. All things considered, I'd say that these are comparable on stats, probably slightly better for dps and worse for tanks than other items of their item level, and certainly not "-50 primary stat".

But even if they aren't best in slot, so what? You're missing the point. They're much better for while you're still gearing up. These are available the first time you run a heroic instance, assuming you win the orb. And these are customizable like nothing else. None of the other plate ilvl 359 helms (again, not counting set items) have hit or dodge at all, and none of them give you a choice about what combination of stats you want. With these you can get points in whatever stat is lowest to avoid diminishing returns, or stack whatever two stats your spec needs a lot of. Up to you.

As for the stat bonus that most professions offer, engineering has always been about quirky, risky effects rather than minmaxing stats. Until Wrath, the goggles were the ONLY engineering item AT ALL that were viable for their stats. Shrink rays and bombs and parachutes and seaforium charges and jumper cables are cool and fun and have some utility... but the idea that engineering can be useful in endgame content is a new thing. For an engineer, the valid comparison with other professions' self-only stat buff isn't the goggles, it's the tinkers on your belt and gloves.

I am gearing my tank for gear and I had ALL the mats but the chaos orb. I find it a bit stupid Blizzard made these BoP. Why can other classes trade their item but not engineer?

(Requires an alchemist!)

So, *raw* mats are as follows:

14-16 Volatile Air

6 Pyrite Ore

1 Chaos Orb from Heroic Dungeons in Cataclysm.
2 Inferno Rubies which can be mined, prospected from obsidium, elementium, and pyrite (all with terrible prospect rates), transmuted by an alchemist with 3 Carnelians and 3 Heartblossoms, or found on your local AH for a premium price. Good luck!

This is an excellent helmet for casual raiders such as myself. I've had it equipped since I dinged 85 and it's lasted me through to Firelands when I finally got lucky and was able to replace it with Greathelm of the Voracious Maw.
