This and its non-heroic counterpart are the only items in ICC so far with Block Rating. Warriors and Paladins will definitely want to pick this up to help counter the -20% dodge in Icecrown.

Edit: Used to have block rating. Now it's dodge/parry which suck for paladins. There's also no -20% dodge in ICC anymore.

Now it's just a nice transmog item.

I've been carrying https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=48055 since september and this shield is exactly what I'm going to replace it with as soon as Arthas is killable (and killed of course). Great stats, blue gem, this shield has it all.

comparison between the 4 shields around that level
check this then look again at what you post the difference in armor is less then 200 and in stam less then 30 AND you need a arena rating of 1800 to get that and since some tanks became a tank for reasons like not wanting to do pvp.

Finally i completely agree with this guy Korasoff who made a wonderfull comment on this subject.

It has 50+ stam and about 300 armor more than other shields (the two stats that matters)
It has no defense , which means the item budget are spent on stam and armor (end game tanks have too much defense).

Actually, Armor is a factor of iLevel and costs no item points, except when it's "bonus" Armor -- such as with the Gauntlets of the Kraken, for example. See how the Armor value is green? That's bonus Armor. Since Wrathful has 6 iLevels on both of the shields you linked, then it automatically has more Armor too.

Therefore, all the item budget is invested entirely in the Stamina and the Resilience. The latter's pointless if you're already at 540 Defense or above -- although with the Wrathful, you could technically be uncrittable for raids with a mere 503 Defense(!). The difference with heroic Neverending Winter socketed with +30 Stamina is:

Wrathful:
+178 Armor
+21 Stamina
5 BV

Heroic NW:
+82 Str
+48 Defense Rating
+51 Parry Rating
+42 Block Rating

Note that the NW socket bonus is +6 Stamina, and is included in the above comparison, thereby closing the gap. Given these stats, and your own aversion to Arenas, heroic Neverending Winter seems like a solid alternative.

Now let's compare Wrathful to the heroic Glacial Wall (once again socketed with +30 Stamina):

10 Stamina

GW:
102 Str
211 Armor
174 BV
54 Defense
46 Parry

With 7 more iLevels for the GW, the winner should be obvious.

You can argue that it also has no parry/dodge or block value/rating but endgame tanks really dont' care about those stats.

I wouldn't quite put it that way. Avoidance has been de-valued via Icecrown Radiance and the changes to mobs's attacks speed, but endgame tanks do still care about it. Just not enough to focus on it over Stamina and Armor.

Most importanty, it has a purple tint compared to the 251 version's blue tint.

I can't be the only one thinking this: This looks totally like the Mask from Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.
Even the name seems to hint the inspirational source of this item.

The mask works as a shield vs the final boss of the game! - makes him unable to instant-death you.

I was actually thinking it looked like the Icon of Sin end boss from Doom 2.
Maybe it has a tiny John Romero head inside it?

We hade abit of a verbal fight about what this shield looks like at work. I claimed that this ofc is a dragon and my boss said that he thought it looked like a satyr.

i think it may be somehow connected with that game called Neverwinter nights idk maybe not but its the first thing that ran in my mind when i saw this item poping out from the gunship armory.
