When the Darting Hatchling darts into a random direction, it will continue sprinting until it gets into a certain distance from its owner. Its speed is always slightly faster than the owner's whether the player is mounted or not. Trying to keep up with it or letting him loose in enclosed spaces results in rather long darting sessions. :)

Every few minutes or so, this little guy will "dart" off in a random direction as if he had rocket boots on.

Just a note about his special: As others have noted, he occasionally runs away from you, leaving trails of dust. If you stand still, he returns after a few seconds. However, if you chase him, he keeps running, leaving trails of dust the whole time! I'm not sure if there's a time limit on how long he'll keep running if you chase him around, but I was chasing mine around for at least half a minute before I tripped up on something (I was in a town at the time). I believe he just keeps running until he's put some minimum distance between you and him -- if you can keep up with him, I imagine you could chase him all the way across Kalimdor (but do note that he does NOT keep running in a straight line).

PTR Notes (Build 10623):

Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper.

Personal Notes:

Both the nests and rare spawn raptors can be up at the same time.
Rare spawn raptors no longer drop the mini pets; they can only be obtained from the nests.
100% loot chance for the mini pets from nests.
Nests can only spawn near the location of the rare spawn raptors but not always in the same spot (almost certain).
Example: Dart's nest can only be found around the location where Dart spawns even if it's not in the same spot where it last spawned.
Nest spawn timer is about the same as rare spawn raptors on LIVE realms.

Confirming that the rare spawns and the nests are definitely not on the same timer: just killed Dart about 22 minutes ago on the off chance that it might still drop, have been riding around in the area scoping for nests since then and, well, nada so far.

Just got the Darting Hatchling and I agree with everyone else, he's adorable! ^.^

I went to the area specified by previous post a few times, didn't really camp the area just went there on my free time. Killed Dart twice, after I killed him today I made another round and his nest was by the northern most tree specified by other post (the one above the actual raptors' nest) and there it was.
Not sure if Dart being there has anything to do with the nest, the last time I killed him the nest wasn't there but there's no telling because someone could have gotten the nest and left Dart...

I came across this Nest today at 12:30pm Co-ord's 47 - 17 Just behind "Stinky" Ignatz." between two trees.

Just a regular looking nest nothing to catch your attention too much, when you mouse over, you get the "Cog" showing you can use / collect it etc.

EDIT: I am on Blade's Edge European realm. (just for record)

The location of the nest does move throughout the raptor area. I found it at the southern part of the island, to the right of the path, among debris around a tree. Not sure of the despawn time. I found Dart at the top of the area and looked for the nest then, gave up and did the escort quest with Stinky, then stopped back threw and found it after.

49.1, 17.3 --Bigger nest than the other ones, bright pink eggs. This one was straight back from the path under a tree nestled again a hill.

The best way to farm this pet is to park a char in the area and log on at random intervals.
if you find a nest grab the pet and leave it for around 5-6 hrs before looking again for another

If you have the npcscan addon it makes it a lot easier as the nests only spawn in the area that dart himself spawns in.
The nests nearly always spawn at the base of the trees so i tend to use a downwards view and circle every tree in the area marked out by npcscan.
(remember if dart himself is up you will need to reset npcscan by clearing your cache for next time or the area wont be marked out)

The nest is made out of what looks like light coloured palm leaves with big pink eggs (bigger than the ones in the centre of the raptor ground) and it doesnt sparkle or anything so keep a look out for the cog symbol

Confirmed to still be obtainable as of the 4.0.3a PTR (i.e. after the "shattering"). The zone has been redesigned slightly, but it appears the previously mentioned coordinates will remain (mostly) valid.

Got mine today. Nest spawned at 49.2, 17.3 at the bottom of a big tree. I had already clicked enter dungeon on the popup window for my random when i saw it so i had to port out of the dungeon to grab it before the lvl 80 shaman that was nearby! One of the most tense loading screens ever lol

I'm camping this pet on my alt for days logging every 2h or so to check if it spawns. And few days ago i have something else to see. Nearby raptor targeting lvl 5 hunter but he couldn't attack him. I started to track that hunter and saw him few sec after in Thousand needles, then in Un'goro following Tanaris. All this in under 2 min. I reported the bastard but after 3 days he is still logging and doing his trip probably checking spawn locations of pets and Blizzard just doesn't do anything to stop this behavior. I'm disappointed but I'm not giving up nor am I paying 700g for this pet on the AH from the same exploiter!

after about 10 or 15 visits over the past month and a half. I FINALLY got my hands on this companion! He is so adorable! *girly moment*. Caught him on Antonidas server @ 11:35am :)

Found the nest by mistake, I was on my flying mount, and was flying toward the barrens, and happened to cross the spot where the nest was, I saw the nest there, and then right next to it was dart, what luck right? killed dart so he could respond again, and then got the egg, then headed to barrens, and I did the same thing with the hatchling in the barrens

Found/killed Dart at 12:10 PM server time. About 7 min. after killing him, while looking for nest, found a 'silver locked chest" that spawned amongst the debris at 48.3/17.7 (the big debris pile to se of the 3 raptor nests). It contained a blue item, Sutarn's Ring, worth 71 g on my server, and some silver. Then found dart's nest just a few moments later (my first find) at 49.0/17.2, right next to tree.

Came here right after I hit the barrens. No sign of Dart but I got the nest along with the pet :) 46,17 between the trees.

I found mines next to the tree at the back on a raised part of ground. The next time I found a nest was at the base of another tree, cannot remember what one but it was in the same line of sight as one of the big raptor nests in the center of the area.
I found a third nest which was a bit away from the main nests off nearer the edge of the area closer to the river.

The best thing to do is follow Dart if she's around as I assume the nests turn up in her pathway.

Also, I found these nests to appear less often than Takk's nest in the Barrens. I base this on looting a Takk nest, flying to the marsh, no nest, fly round farming Goldthorn and still no nest. Return to barrens and there was another Takk nest.

I could have been unlucky in that a player looted the Dart nest before I got there.

I also found that they sell whereas Leaping hatchlings don't do as well on auction.

1.Download the WoW-Addon TomTom and install it.

2.Move to Dustwallow Marshes.

3.Make a Macro including this:

/way 48.0 14.2
/way 49.2 17.5
/way 47.9 19.0
/way 46.6 17.1

4.Follow the TomTom-Arrow and look for nests.

Found my pet on the first try this way, hope it will help you too.

No one looks for these much, so it's very easy to find. Especially all the other three as well. It's very easy to find these if you check every day. I found three out of the four just today. Just keep looking and you should find em sooner or later.

Found Dart running around at 9pm server - then found the nest at 47.93 - 19.11 at the base of a tree. The eggs are larger than the other nests and purple. I happened to come back in the area at 10:37pm and ran into Dart again behind Stinky. Could not find nest after 30 search of the area.

This is the easiest pet to farm. i love it, it is a great pick me up whan you are getting down on farming bacuase you can never find anything like me. My husband and i have found 4 of these in the last two days. Good luck everyone and happy hunting.

Found at 48.00, 19.10, at the base of a wide tree and a narrow tree, right next to a barrel and broken crate and other junk.

Finally got him....He showed up near the back of the area (if you enter from right off the road) and he spawned at 2:34 PM CENTRAL TIME on moonguard

I had been looking for an exact time he'd spawn on these forums but people are vague so there ya go...
I think I have gotten him before awhile ago.. I got him in about 6 hours after this one... so about 4:34pm central time he might spawn again

Thought I'd do a post laying out the different color variants of the hatchings, having recently completed my collection. I won't get into where each one comes from, as each link has plenty on that.

It's interesting that some of the hatchlings have very defined stripes on their backs, while others have less defined stripes and more like splotches/lines of color.

They are:
Darting Hatchling - Orange with cyan stripes and green eyes
Deviate Hatchling - Purple with cyan stripes and yellow eyes
Gundrak Hatchling - Cyan with dark blue splotches. Yellow eyes.
Leaping Hatchling - Dark Cyan, almost slate with violet splotches and yellow eyes
Obsidian Hatchling - Olive and sort of grey-purple with aqua splotches and yellow eyes (and round pupils, oddly enough)
Ravasaur Hatchling - Lime green with orange stripes and squinting orange eyes
Razormaw Hatchling - Light yellow-orange with blue stripes and green eyes
Razzashi Hatchling - Red/Burnt orange with green splotches. Cyan eyes.
Lashtail Hatchling - as the unique reward from An Old Friend, your 'aka has a slightly unique model. She's a bit bigger than the others, and has a more defined "beak" color. She also has large round eyes with round black pupils, whereas the others have the classic dinosaur thin line pupils. That aside, her colors are almost identical to Razzashi's, but with much larger stripes.

Most of the hatchlings do an idle roar(more of a screech really) animation/sound, with a few exceptions. One wanders around and leaps back to you with a screech when out of range (Leaping), one will tear off running around with a dust trail a la Egbert (Darting), and Lashtail reportedly will play with the bones of your fallen enemies.
(I could have sworn I'd seen a raptor other than Darting do the run but couldn't get him to do it, would like confirmation if anyone sees it)

Man i have been here and staked out the area a few time, with no luck mind you, However today after completing a couple of quests in the general vicinity i was on my way back to the flight master when i thought what the hell ill go run through and see. Well bugga me dead there he was like a streak of orange leather. man am i glad i took the detour.

Ported to Theramore on my mage...decided to look for the hatchling...ran to spot, saw Dart coming running, killed him, then looked around for his nest....was about 20 paces N of where I killed him....just ran to look for the Leaping Hatchling....bam...nest was up as well, at 60, 92.....guess it was my lucky day

Dang, I've killed this guy at least 10 times and the Daring Hatching ALWAYS drops. Killed him today after not seeing him for a LONG TIME and he dropped only a green armor item and some white trash. What the heck is up with that?

EDIT: Looks like the rare no longer drops the pet. You can find the Darting Hatching in a nearby nest. Weird.
