Could this be affected by spell power? I recall quite a few pre-BC weapons with lifesteal procs that were affected by spell power (Ancient Hakkari Manslayer comes to mind.)

Shockingly poor quality of item considering the difficulty of Magtheridon relative to say, Prince Malchezaar or even Gruul who both drop weapons that are at least equal if not better than this.

I'd hazard that the proc rate is fairly low, if it's the usual 5 or 6%.

They might have buffed the proc rate on this. I picked it up last night because nobody else wanted it (prot warrior) and Procwatch said it was around 8 ppm when I was beating on a blasted lands guy.

I only messed around with it for 15 minutes though.

This weapon has three sockets which is a lot. You can conveniently fill them with Strength or Stam gems if you feel this item lacks pure stats.

For a warrior, then proc is consistent with 9.8% chance on hit, if you count hit as any ability requiring a weapon (white, slam, mortal strike, rend, probably heroic strike, hamstring, execute). Not confirmed for victory rush. There is no minimum time between proc, as procs within 2 sec has been observed (white hit + slam or MS). No haste effect (flurry/trinket/gear) were used when approximating the rate. I doubt you could get a PPM anywhere near 8, expect 4 to 6.

Rate has been establish with 90 minutes of autoattack in the blasted lands and confirmed in instances.

The proc is after a hit, so it won't proc if the hit is a killing blow. The proc won't heal if no actual shadow damage is dealt (resist or killing blow, which lead to partial healing), not tested with shields (PW:Shield, voidwalker sacrifice, mage mana shield/ice armor).

Have been using this Polearm as a Retribution Paladin for a few weeks now, and like the above poster, it's proc chance seems to be around the 10% mark.
Procs off judgement of command, SoCommand, white hits and Crusader strike.
It can be resisted, and 'drain life' immune mobs such as mechanicals are immune to the effect.
The damage done is also affected by avenging wrath, but due to the low %dmg increase from the talent 'Crusade', I'm unsure whether this affects it too.

Overall a very good polearm, however lacking it may seem.

I dont see how this is better or comparable to Gorehowl. The Glaive gets you a slightly higher top end and a DD proc at the cost of:

-49 Strength
-43 Agility
-51 Stamina

The proc does not make up the loss as much as the normalized AP based on a slower weapon, and that an arms spec warrior always should go for the slower, harder hitting choice. 49 strength and 1.4% to crit is just irreplaceable with 3 sockets and that proc (at 2 ppm the proc is only 10 dps, maybe 20 dps in actual use combined with instant attacks).

On the other hand, Gorehowl's 498 ap is about 35 dps. Being a 3.6 speed weapon however it not only has a lower average damage, lower top damage, it also gives you a lower normalized attack power to damage bonus compared to this.

In other words, if you have a lot of AP, a slower weapon will win out against a faster weapon simply because of how WoW calculates your attack damage based on your attack power. The proc and the sockets just narrow the gap.

I can theorycraft about what would be better, X or Y but that really isn't what is concerning me... what is concerning me is the fact that I am going to go absolutely batty having to look at the damn fire effect that doesn't actually follow the glaive but sort of sticks out there like some cheesy streamer...

You know what? I figured it out... the lazy bastards used the exact same flame effect off of the Halberd of Smiting where the fire followed the vaguley "Z" like shape which if you check out the Glaive from the side you can see pretty plainly... to bad the Glaive and Halberd don't remotely share the same shape.

Comparing Gorehowl and Glaive of the Pit (in Warrior/Ret Paladin terms):

Gorehowl:

49 STR = 98 / 107.8 Attack power = 7 / 7.7 Increased DPS - a raw 127.7 / 128.4 dps.
43 AGI = 1.303/1.72 Crit, 86 armor, and 1.433/1.72 Dodge.
51 STA = 510 HP

Glaive of the Pit:

3x Red Gem slots.

Anywhere from 24 STR to 12 STR / 12 Crit Rating- there's a broad spectrum of how you can flex this weapon.

24 STR = 48 / 52.8 AP = 3.42 / 3.77 DPS - a raw 123.12 / 123.47 DPS
4 Crit Rating = .1695 % to Critical Strike.

*2 PPM on 3.7 = 12.33% chance to deal 283-315 Shadow damage / Heal per hit. *

Over 60 seconds- 10 Crusader Strikes, 16.2 White Swings, ( 16 x .43209 ) = 6.91 Seal of Command.
10+16.2+6.91 = 33.11 x .1233 = 4.082 x 285-315 = 1163.5 - 1285.83 DPM / 60 = 19.3916 - 21.4305 DPS (!!) x .95 (5% resist) 18.422 - 20.359 DPS = AVG 19.3905 DPS and 96.95 hp5

I'm not a math genius but I think that's technically correct.

SO

Gorehowl - 127.7 / 128.4 Final DPS + 510 HP + ~1.5% Crit.
Glaive of the Pit - 142.51 / 142.86 Final DPS + 97 hp5 + Very Minor Crit

And Glaive has higher Top-End.

I pick Glaive for PvE thanks.

I'm not sure if they buffed this item or not because of all the bad rep it got, but I am noticing a way higher proc rate than 10%. It actually is almost procing like 30% or 40%. I've had it proc 3-4 times in a 20 second fight as a paladin. And like a poster put above, it does proc off all of our abilities, seals and hammer even. Someone else above said that they don't know why anyone would pick this over gorehowl. I actually have both this and gorehowl, and I noticed that this polearm actually does significantly more dmg compared to gorehowl. The fact that epic gems are becoming more common only means that this polearm will actually be better if you feel like throwing down a few hundred gold on it. Anyway, for dps I would choose this over gorehowl anyday, but for pvp, I would take gorehowl.

I dont know, with a proc rate like that it seems like this weapon would be good for pvp. Especially if it proc'd off of each hit in windfury. pop it and get healed for like 1200? yes pls. (saying that they all proc'd, XD.)

The windfury totem effect only adds one extra weapon swing. The effect of

Chance on hit: Steals 285 to 315 life from target enemy.

would be 570-630 damage/healing if a warrior or paladin got a windfury proc while wielding this. If a shaman could wield this and did get a triple windfury hit with all three hits proccing the lifesteal effect, it would be between 855-945 damage/healing. The parent posters figure of a 1200 heal is incorrect for either case. The parent posters wording does seem to imply thinking of the shaman weapon enchant version of spell. Either way . . . yeah, mod him down.

Anywhere from 24 STR to 12 STR / 12 Crit Rating

There is no 24 Strength gem, only 24 Attack Power, which is equal to 12 Strength gems, which stacked, would only give you 72 Attack Power, 26 less than Gorehowl

And Glaive of the Pit only has 14 more top end damage

I'd still take Gorehowl, as a warrior at least

as a ret pally with the S2 sword... I find this to actually be better. I have only three 8 strength gems in it now and savagery, but the proc itself is pretty sweet for damage. Coupled with the SSO necklace (I'm scryer, so I get the stupid arcane bolt) It really makes up for the wait in between swings when CS and Judgement is down.

That and it makes up for SoB friendly fire :D

And to top it off. Running around SM Cath with this to level my polearm skill I was doing 650 dps using SotC and never judging.

I got this on my paladin after our second mag kill and it owns! After patch 2.1 it
became even better. Lucky for me all our warriors had deep thunder/gorehowl already. The weapon procs a lot too, had it proc 3 times in a row before (and it can proc off SoC). Proc looks looks like a really quick drain life and does shadow damage (it can get resisted which is my only complaint). Also would like to mention it hits like a rather large train!

It's funny how people say "this would be good for hunters with an agility enchant", but so would a weapon like sonic spear with an agility enchant. Enchants don't count as part of the essential weapon scheme, so don't bother mentioning them unless you have a strategy behind it. ANYWAYS, the only class I could see this going to would be arms warrior. It's slow, good for poleaxe spec(+5% crit), and the 3 sockets are there to customize it to fit whatever floats your boat. The lifesteal is handy too. Retri palis MAYBE, but when you think about it this wouldn't give them much advantage since they can heal themselves as it is. Lacks base stats, but hits hard.

Dear god im seriously sick to death of hunters branding stuff "hunter weapons" True hunters need a melee wep but that does not entitle them to roll for or ninja a dagger or 2h sword with +strength or Dragon's Call (its true it happened to one of my guildies he wouldn't shut up about it for weeks) unless the rouge(s)/warrior(s)/ret pally etc doesent need or want to roll for it and rest of group agrees ONLY should then should a hunter be allowed to roll <there are exeptions like Legacy> but this polearm is not one of them i bet 100g that you would be pissed off your ass if a rouge or warrior rolled on/ninjaed a true hunter weapon (aka bow crossbow or gun)
The Message is simple shut up about this being a hunter weapon, give arms warriors or ret pallies a fair go as they would be far better off with it beacuse hunters need weapons with stats (+crit + attack power + agility etc)not procs
My advice for rouges MS warriors and Ret Pallies put all hunters that roll for stuff like this (or in rouges cases daggers or good 1h swords) without permission on your ignore list and on youre guild blacklist (if they have one) where they belong

Better off with Axe of the Gronn Lords, Hammer of the Naruu, Despair, or Legacy depending on your class, all which drop from lower level instances. Have the Gronn Axe and Despair on my prot warrior (over the months you collect stuff no one actually needs). This one? Maybe if I took it, it would be to play around with, like soloing SM or ZF with a low level alt on follow. Use in raid? Nope.

This weap is craptastic in a raid environment ... about the same DPS as the other weapons and a crappy "lifesteal" proc, the heal of absolute no use since you have about 7 healers around. I'll take the 600 damage proc (which can crit) off Despair anyday over this "Shard of the Pit"

No way I'd even use this on my hunter. Melee weapons are just "trinket slots" for stats. My Sonic Spear, or my BBW Paw + Spiteblade beats this hands down. (no weapon was taken from a rogue, lol, it was unneeded)

Hunters with weapons that proc on hit are just losers unless they really can't find anything better. Procs are a waste of item level.

As a hunter, I have to agree that this weapon is definately NOT a hunter weapon.

As much as I LOVE to have a fall-back to melee something (soloing or PvPing more specifically), and as much as I LOVE to melee the &*!@ out of stuff, I leave that to my pally. A hunter's job is to use ranged attacks to keep the enemy at distance (an epic bow will create at least 1k more crit damage than an equivalent melee weapon).

I'm tired of people labelling things 'hunter weapons' too. Never hear "zomg, rouge weapon!" or "dude ttly an mage wepaon, lol" (Spelling mistakes intentional). Ye, there are weapons that benefit hunters. But, honestly, a melee weapon that has 12 agi > 10 extra dps anyday for a hunter.

I agree that the hunter's job is not the most glamorous, and are often ridiculed for just sittin back and shootin stuff, but that is our job. With only 3 melee spells under our belt, there's not much else we can do or 3 melee ones with one as a 'after dodging').

For you hunters who think that we can melee, yes, we can. IF you want straight, no-spell damage. We can melee rather effectively (albeit when you're getting hit for 200+ damage from PvE and 500+ from PvP with less than stellar health and armor, I guarantee you wont last long). But if you add in that 'melee' is more than white damage, then you're in the wrong area. Wing-cli is awesome, and raptor does amazing damage for itself. I agree. So, raptor for 700 damage then clip, run away, scatter, charge up an Aimed shot, and hit a 3k crit (1.2-7k non crit). I think the damage speaks for itself.

Polearms are also not hunter explicit. Yes, they close our 'dead zone' (for non-hunters, our minimum distance of ranging and maximum distance of meleeing), but that's just so we can do some fancy footwork to get away (wing-clip ftw).

For all you other guys who have been wronged or annoyed by hunters, I apologize. Sadly, I'm one of the few who have some common sense nowadays.

Well the only reason any hunter would ever take it is to DE it...I had it drop for one of my guildies who has two 70 hunters (one surv/other BM) and he DE'd it and sold the shard. The only other reason to take it is to sell it at a vendor for like 10g or whatever.

This is not a hunter weapon, and never will be. As a lvl 70 hunter, there are basic quest items that are better for a hunter than this, and they would still be better even if this weapon had 200 DPS.

Its is statless, and therefore useless to a hunter.
