Magtheridon's Lair has been confirmed by Blizzard to be a quick, raid encounter, similar to that of Onyxia's Lair. It will be a raid wing of the Hellfire Citadel dungeon.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the raid is located somewhere underneath Hellfire Citadel, the room of the last boss of the blood furnace, the floor is see-thru, if you look below, you can see Magtheridon.

The entrance to the lair is on the west side of Hellfire Citadel on the ground, its on the ground of one of the sides of the Citadel just look around, as I entered (solo) I saw 2 patrols of 3 level 70-71 elites, they seemed to be humanoids not sure if sheepable/sappable.

The trash in here is pretty annoying. There are 4 pulls of groups of 3 hellfire warders. The respawn timer on the trash is 1 hour giving, and if you have megtheridon engaged, and any of HIS channelers are alive and the trash warders respawn, they will aggro into Mags room and kill you all.

Each of the 3 mobs in the trash pulls has the same abilities

Shadow Bolt volley - range 41+ yards, you cannot los the bolts. Does decent damage. This is a cast time spell you can interupt it.

Rain of Fire - Summons a rain of fire, instant cast and not channeled, does very high damage, handle this spell by simply avoiding the fire.

Fear - Fears the warders 2nd highest threat target

Death Coil - Same as fear

Shadowfury - They very rarely use this skill, the trigger for it seems to be if the tanks aggro on this mob is low, he will use this attack which lowers everyones threat that is hit with it, thus making that warder far more annoying to deal with.

The basic idea for the trash is you have 1-2 tank on each warder, but since you will probably only be going in with 5 tanks in the raid, 1 tank on each is possible.
The pull, 1-2 hunters will misdirect pull to the tanks that are going the farthest distance
The warders will be fought in a line, each one pulled 40+ yards away from the other. so basicaly the first one is tanked near to where they were standing, the second one is taked farther back tword the instance entrance, and the 3rd tanked all the way back at the entrance. (This does not apply to the 3rd and 4th pull, but if you can understand what im trying to say on where you fight them, you can easily adjust the locations of those pulls)
Each mob will have a tank, a warlock, and a rogue assigned to them for CoT and Kick.

The trouble with the fight is tank aggro, they have very little time to do this, but each tank HAS to be the highest threat of thier mob at all times, if a random healer draws aggro, the tank will be second aggro and get feared, if that happens, people start dying in a massive hurry (The idea behind 2 tanks on 1 warder is that if one gets feared theres another one there that will have aggro, or that the second tank will be getting the fears, but this is not really a need if the tanks can handle them). Hunters will do the distance pulls as the tanks cannot run down, get thier target, and run back or else they will get triple shadowbolted, get healed big time if they survive, and lose thier aggro to the healers.

So the main idea is pull them back, get aggro as soon as humanly possible, cancel the shadowbolt volleys, and win. It takes several attempts to really get this trash learned, but becuase of the 1 hour respawn and the fact taht you want to get as maany Magtheridon attempts in as you can in that hour, you need to perfect this trash so that no more than 1 person dies to each group, so you save time.

While Mag's seen a couple of nerfs since the original comments in this thread, it's still a challenging encounter. The trash leading up to him has become easier as people have picked up better gear, but on the fight itself, there are many roles to assign and bringing him down takes some preparation. If you clear the trash in the start, that means you can get near Magtheridon and the Hellfire Channelers without aggroing.

And I found out that when your waiting for the raid leader to finish saying the tactics, or waiting in Magtheridon's room for any other reason, the perfect thing to do to pass the time i play Jump-Rope with Magtheridon's tail.

Its really amusing.

We started a two man run on him yesterday, me a blood tank DK and a prot pally. Prot pally grabbed all adds while I was working Mag.
It is definitely doable and we had all under control. This setup works fine.

But at about 30% for some reason Mag dissapeared and then reset the boss encounter. This was after 13 mins fighting or so. Must be bugged.

With 6k gs and this spec I was able to solo him. Took about 20 min and the channelers never died. The keep each other up too well. After the fight just run out of the room and they despawn. Reckoning is key to keep your health up. Judge with light and sanc will keep mana up. With the channelers, their summoned creatures and Mag all attacking, reckoing is up near 50% of the time. The time and respeccing is well spent for the 500g and loot he drops.

Easily 2 manned by a fury warrior and a resto shammy. All our gear was above 264, but i doubt that that made much difference since the resto shammy took almost no damage and did nothing but heal.

Most of the despawns for me happend during the knockback phase. I think it has something to do with him not getting hit for a moment. Saved my avengers shield to atleast get a hit on him and got him down. Could just be luck.

2 manned it on my UH DK with a guildie (also UH DK), were able to burn down the last summoner right as he got free, switched to Mag (didnt bother with Abyssals, they despawn), had him down in under 5 mins. 250ish gold each, as well as a 20 slot bag and his head

Will be trying him solo after reset (if the dont change the gold he drops when 4.0.6 hits that is)

Solo'd him on the PTR 4.0.6 as a prot pally. After realizing I could not kill any of the summoners I just focused on Magtheridon and was able to kill him without too much difficulty. The summoners despawn after the fight.

I've been trying to solo him all day.
He keeps despawning at different times, for no apparent reason.
Sometimes he despawns after 5min. Sometimes 15.
Doesen't matter if its 5%hp or 95%.
Kinda annoying that I can't find the reason to why he does it.
No, I'm not hitting the gate.

Anyone had the same problem and found out why?

Last night I was very mad because of Magtheridon disappearing 5 times in a row - I lost an hour and about 60 gold for repairs. I wrote a ticket. Here is the GM response:

What you report normally happens when Magtheridon is either being soloed or the party facing him has very small numbers (less than 4). We have reported the issue to the development team, but the fact is the magtheridon encounter is a raid encounter and was designed having a raid in mind and not a small party, and because of that they are not very tempted to alter the encounter.

As such the only advise we can offer is to not try to solo magtheridon and build a small party.

Did it with m8, me fury, he protection pala. Easy fight, I killed each add in 5 sec, after that boss is simple tank 'n' spank fight, I even tanked whole time. Had to used regeneration once, but I imagine if pala kept aggro I would survive without it. It can be soloable, but only if you are plate with high dps (because adds heal pretty fast, I don't think tank can kill them, unless his dps is over 10k), and boss himself doesn't hit hard, but with his high amount of HP it takes time to kill him.

At the end, 250 gold + lots of items. Easy money every 2 day :)

Yes you can PuG the Magtheridon's Lair raid. Just find people to join your group, turn it into a raid and voila!...got yourself a PuGged raid. The only requirement that I know of is that you must be at least level 68 for this raid. It is a lvl 70, 25 player raid from the Burning Crusade expansion. It is located in Hellfire Penninsula where the other 5 player dungeons are at. Have fun and good luck!

After patch 4.1, this is no longer worth soloing. Or even duoing or anything. Mag dropped 48g for me about 10 minutes ago. Yes you read that right. Forty-eight gold. Totally not worth it anymore.

Tips for soloing as a Blood spec DK.

Keep your diseases up on everything at all times. Use outbreak and pestilence to lower attack speed with frost fever. Cast icy touch/plague strike and pestilence if outbreak is on cooldown.

Don't try to kill the channelers as it buffs the remaining ones. I only managed to kill one before the rest started healing too fast. Put your back up against a wall and just tank everything in addition to Magtheridon.

It will still be a long fight, but slightly more manageable.

Just solo'd VERY VERY easy as a feral druid tank. 2 set pieces, rest raid 359 gear besides weapon/relic is heroic blue gear. I have 155k hp and don't think I dropped below 125k anytime in this whole fight. The healers, they are annoying as crap, but easy to deal with. Took me 20 mins to kill all of them, but I got it done about the time Mag was around 40%. So burning the healers and just aoe damage on mag worked out ok. For the healers, I just dropped them down fairly good and then I waited to bash a heal on the one I was targetted and popped berserked and burned, since it his 3 the others had to heal also, leaving the one I had targetted easy mode, then I pretty much dpsed and had to wait on berserk to kill another, unless I got lucky.

But overall, this is pretty easy to solo. Nothing special, he's gravey. I made about 100g so far with quest turn in and selling all loot, not counting the gems in the bag, which when they sell should put me around 175g total for this kill. Not bad at all for around 25-30 mins worth of easy mode.

Solo'd as a 352 iLvl BM hunter and a spirit beast. Didn't dps adds, just kited ones that aggro'd on me. Occasionally FD if there where a lot on me. Kept Serpent Sting up on Mag, popped Beastial Wrath on cool down. Kept Mend Pet active as much as I could, and used Spirit Mend often.

Fight took 12:30. Dropped 48 gold plus items.

it's impossible to Solo, i think. when ever i've tied on my recently turned 85 Blood DK, i almost kill one of the adds during P1 and all the other ones just heal it. it's 2manable though. because you -need- somone to pull an add off you to stop the others healing it.

It's perfectly possible to solo this guy.

I have 155k health as a feral (bear) druid, self buffed (Steelskin Flask, 90Stam/Agi food, no Mark because I derped). I'm in the ZG/ZA gear with the rings and one trinket from the Firelands daily vendors, and the cloak from being friendly with Avengers of Hyjal. Not the most fantastic, and easily obtainable.

The lowest I got was to 125k and that was from the trash mobs outside Magtheridon's room, because they like to fear you into other packs that will all but chain fear you, leaving you unable to dodge/parry/block. Keep Thrash up on cooldown (I use the following macro to save me a button in my rotation):

Thrash, Lacerate, and watch the trash die while they chase you down for more happy fun fear times.

You don't need another person to pull the mobs off of you to interrupt them when you're in Mag's room. You just need patience. Keep one of them your focus, while spreading Lacerate around as well as Thrash. The heal they do is not an AoE one, and they'll have to choose their target - which will generally be the one you've focused - meaning you'll be watching their health drop around you while you just bash your focus target's heal.

This will not take a few minutes. I popped out twice to renew my thorns before I forgot about it completely. You will get Magtheridon before the other mobs are down, but if you've lasted that long, then all he really is to you is more rage fodder. Just work the mobs down bit by bit (I had three die all at once while they attempted to save my target), and throw all your rage on Lacerates on the others to trigger your free mangle. Blow Berserk whenever it's up if you like.

When they are dead, just kill Mags. He'll take as long to kill on his own as the mobs did, but he also won't hit you for anything. His blast nova was hitting me for ~1600 a tick when it -did- hit, though I absorbed more of his blows through mastery than actually taking them.

These mobs and the boss together never got me lower than 148k. Mags himself never dropped me below 150k.

Completely soloable, you just need patience.

I just completely ignored the adds, as I wasn't able to do enough to kill any of them and just simply focused on Magtheridon. Took me a long time, but keeping my back to the wall, he never despawned and I didn't have much trouble healing myself.

Just gave this guy a shot today with ~330 gear (lv 85 Fury Warrior). I could hit and last awhile but couldn't drop the healers with even 3K DPS. Have gotten them down very low in executable range but even alternating, they simply heal too fast. Will return later.

Just spelling out a few things for anyone new to soloing Mags...

1) Around the perimeter of his lair there are stationary and roving mobs, in sets of three. These must be taken down. Any you miss will run into the central area when the Mag fight begins.

Looking at the damage they deal I suspect that even a well geared DK tank would be advised to do this preliminary clear, at this stage of the game.

2) Next you enter his circular lair. There are these single mobs spread around, seeming to channel his bonds. They have cubes. You do not click the cubes and never will be able to click the cubes. Just eye candy.

Agro one of the channeling mobs. That causes all to run at you. They heal each other. Devise your own strategy to nuke them down. I popped Bloodlust etc and used my stone golem and Feral Spirit too.

You need to kill as many as possible so that few remain when the fight automatically shifts into the second phase. I had two left.

3) Phase three begins after a while - Mags activates automatically. Stand with your back against a wall. Do not move. You will notice his attacks "trying" to move you. Always be doing something to ensure threat is maintained.

Obviously tank and spank. You know your own class for when you need to heal through damage.

pro-tip, if you've never been there before like me you want to kill all the groups around the edge first otherwise if you go straight to mag. first they all aggro and chain deathcoil you to death basically.

You need some decent gear to kill the adds quickly.

1- Make sure you kill all the trash before the fight

2- Kill the adds one by one quickly, turn on all your cooldowns. This would probably be impossible if I was Prot, you need lots of burst dps to outdamage their healing.

3- Don't dps "Burning Abyssals". They despawn after a while and they don't hit hard. Just focus on Mag after you're done killing the other mobs.

4- Use your defensive abilities whenever they're available. Heal yourself during "Blast Nova"s

Well something has changed!
I went in tonight with another Pally, he being 85 & I being 82.
All the mobs were ? to us.
NONE of the mobs gave us experience!
We were not able to loot any mobs!

We managed to fight our way down to the boss but wiped a couple of times trying to mange the crowd and the boss.

I don't know what changed since last year but this info is out of date.

The mobs in the main room spwan fast.

I will revisit with a few more level 80's and try again.

So much for this being an easy quest, a level 70 quest!

Something to bear in mind: when someone aggro's any of the mages standing around Magtheridon, spikes will block the entrance and prevent that person from coming out. Make sure the entire party gets in before anyone aggro anything. I recently did this for the first time, and since I had no idea about it and we were only a few people, I was locked outside and after about 15 minutes, Mag despawned on those who were in there.

like others said , kill all the guys in the groups of 3 before you enter the chamber , they give nothing , no loot from them , i have yet to be able to kill any of the ones inside the chamber , they all heal each other , as a lvl 85 Ret Pally ilvl 373 i just leave them be and once Mag attacks i center on him , and basically just kite around and use Divine Storm for the mobs chasing me , Seal of Insight and Word of Glory to heal , Divine Protection everytime its up and usually have to Lay on Hands once as well , just go all out on Mags and you will eventually down him , he has despawned on me a few times right before i had him dead , seems to be some kinda bug , but keep with him and you CAN kill him , just solo'd him on 3/18/2012 and will be farming him everyweek now , good luck !

Just solo'ed this as a lvl 85 Blood DK with okay gear (average ilvl of 356.) I didn't use any flasks or pots, only buff I had was Blood Presence.

The steps I used were quite simple:

Pound on a single Hellfire Channeler to build up Runic Power while waiting for Mag to become active.
Once Mag becomes active, pop Army of the Dead (though this could probably be ignored, as it doesn't do a whole lot for you.
Throw up Outbreak.
Spam Death Strike, Heart Strike, and Rune Strike.
Pop Dancing Rune Weapon whenever it is off of CD and you have the Runic Power for it.
Use Anti-Magic Shell during Blast Nova.

Profit!

For point of reference, I have:

144.6k health
12.19% Dodge
17.96% Parry
27 Expertise
20.56 Mastery

Mag never dropped me below 135k health.

It took 6:30 to down Mag, and he dropped 3 T4 tokens, some other shinies, the bag, the head, and the gem sack, as well as 50g and some change.

I soloed this as an ungeared 85 Prot Pally in about 40 minutes. I suggest that once the fight starts, don't pay any mind to the channelers. Before Magtheridon wakes, though, kill off some of their elementals.

Once Magtheridon is free, focus on him. Use Seal of Insight (To regain lost mana) and the Blessing of Kings. Use Crusader Strike, Judgement, Holy Wrath, Consecration, and Avenger's Shield whenever possible. Do not waste holy power on attacking, instead use it on Word of Glory. Word of Glory is your MOST IMPORTANT SPELL. If you are low on health and WoG is on cooldown, don't forget your Lay on Hands or to combine Divine Shield and Divine Light. Also, don't forget your Guardian of Ancient Kings, Holy Shield, and Avenging Wrath, preferably used at the same time.

It's an endurance match, have fun.

Soloed today as a 399 ilevel Assassination Rogue with stage 2 legendaries and Heroic DS Shoulders (rest of gear was normal DS/Valor Vendor gear). This took me quite a few tries, and ended up having to respec to a more defensive build to balance DPS and defense.

The build I chose was very similar to the normal Assassination Rogue PvE build at this point, but Murderous Intent and 2pts of Opportunity were removed in exchange for 3pts Deadened Nerves, and 2 pts Improved Recuperate. This combination was enough to survive the healers and the Burning Abyssals that they spawn.

The "strategy" is fairly simple. Start off by applying Wound Poison to your thrown, so you can fire off a couple of FoKs to help reduce the effectiveness of their heals. After that, just keep switching from healer to healer, killing them off one by one - throwing kicks on Dark Mending when you can. I suggest firing off both Evasion and Cloak of Shadows - fairly early, so you reduce that initial damage and so you'll have it ready for later on in the fight.

Once you get those healers down - Magtheridon should have broken free of his bonds. At this point, just concentrate on staying on the move, and throwing a couple of Mutilates here and there on Mag to use on Recuperate to keep your health up. After a short time the Burning Abyssals will die, and you'll be able to have some alone time with Mag.

At this point it's pretty much cake. He won't do enough damage to really hurt you as long as you keep Recuperate up, and Safe Fall will prevent any damage from the bouncing. While other people here recommend fighting him at the wall, it really isn't that necessary - as you're still able to attack when he bounces you. So just keep beating on him like you would with any other mob, and he'll eventually go down.

Just remember - if you Vanish and do not hit him again immediately, the entire encounter (healers and all) will reset. But then again, unless this is your first raid/dungeon you've attempted to solo, you should already know that :p

I solo'd Magtheridon easily as my prot pally with about 377 ilvl. I even lost my shield halfway in because I forgot to repair it. Definitely not a hard fight, or really even worth the gold anymore. I killed off one channeler before the fight, otherwise don't even worry about them. Just keep up Seal of Insight, use either hammer of righteousness or crusader strike, hammer only if you wanna look like you're doing good dps. Make sure you time your avenging wrath, word of glory, and shield of the righteous correctly so that when you're low on health you pop avenging wrath, word of glory, then work back up to 3 holy power for shield. worked great. Not a hard fight for any tank or well geared plate dps.

Just to update for the Mists Patch: This is now a very simple solo fight. Ret Pally in quest greens and blues at 90, nothing special just a rare heal here and there then show his face was your weapon looks like up close.

Might have to jump a bit to show him, he is a big guy.

At lvl90 this is a cake walk, even without amazing gear. My health as a 90 combat rogue is 355K and it never got below 300K. iLvl is 437. It just takes a while to whittle his health down.

Just kill the adds first, including the annoying healers that surround him. Kill everyone but the Abyssals! The Abyssals despawn so they are a waste of time, but the other adds will all come to Mag's aid.

When it comes to the fight, just wedge yourself into a corner and never leave, even when the walls start crumbling. I didn't even need to use killing spree, I just spammed sinister strike, kept Slice & Dice up and spammed Eviscerate when I got combo points. For health, I had leeching poison up and hit recuperate every so often.

Just soloed 25man as lvl90 BM Hunter. For some reason I could'nt enter the 10man raid. I had it set for 10 man, but when i entered the raid it changed to 25 man. Maybe there isnt a 10 man Magtheridon. I had Arcturis as tanking pet, and Pogeyan, Chromaggus, Prince Lakma, and a shattered hand wolf in my "stable". The only real problems were the adds keeping Magtheridon restrained. I managed to kill one before the others were on me and Magtheridon was released. They heal themselves from as low as 1/8th health. They also summon Infernals that are seriously tough. I tried to keep them all on my pet while I dps'ed the boss. I ate food to give me a mastery buff (200 from grilled dinosaur haunch). I had to use Exhileration a couple of times but didnt really use Heal pet much.Using Dire Beast, then Readiness, then Dire Beast again, and finally Stampede allowed several pets out dps'ing at once and helped a lot. I still had a summoner and a couple of infernals still to kill after I had killed Magtheridon.

Soloed as lvl85 ilvl 367 disc priest. Ignored the adds, since I couldn't kill them fast enough. Kept my back to the wall, and just focused on Magtheridon, popping a shield and heal every now and then. Took about 15 minutes to kill him.

I'm a relatively new player and I just received this quest. I'm Level 70. Usually, when getting dungeon type quests, I can access them through the Dungeon Finder. But I've read this is a Raid and Raids aren't available until Level 85. Most of these comments are written by people describing their solo accomplishments. I doubt I can solo this, so is there any game mechanic that will allow me to join a raid at this point? Or do I need to manually assemble a large group or wait until 85?

Solo'd this afternoon. 540 BM Hunter.
Killed adds on one side on the way down.
Pulled boss, killed adds, killed boss.
Popped Stampede, Rapid Fire, Bestial Wrath.
Whole fight took about a minute-ish and done.
Absurdly easy.

This raid is easily solo-able, did it on my frost Ilevel 460 mage. No strategy. just ran in and killed everything. simple. and I also did it on my 85 prot paladin. it is very easy and others great T-mog.

Was surprised that I could solo this as a 78 Assassin Rogue. All mobs appeared as ? figured I'd be dead before I started. Key is to kill off all secondary mobs before entering the main room. Ignore the rock elementals that get spawned if you can.

There's a short pathway that is visible on your minimap to use to find the raid. :)

Located directly behind the whole of Hellfire Citadel, just follow the path.

To find old raids and dungeons - you can try Handynotes_DungeonLocations. It gives the new symbols (green or blue circles) like Legion so you can find all those raids and dungeons on your maps easier. It is only a matter of time before Blizz does this to integrate everything.

So, to add to the "this guy is solo-able" argument, I just did it as a level 93 Guardian Druid. I think the fight lasted about 8 seconds and he was dead. I took maybe 1% damage.

Note trying to solo Mags as an 85 priest. Make sure you damage all the channelers in Magtheridon's room so the encounter doesn't reset.

Took a couple resets before realizing that.
