As you can see from the map, Vashj'ir is effectively a mini-continent with three seperate zones: the Abyssal Depths, Kelp Forest, and Shimmering Expanse.

For Alliance the quest you need to pick up to get to Vashj'ir is in the harbour and is called Into the Abyss.

For those who were as confused as me concerning the way back to Vashj'ir AFTER completing the boat tour quest, and left without a Beta NPC to teleport back to it, I found this useful walkthrough.

With an epic flying mount, fly from Stormwind over the sea, or from the edge of Dun Morogh (this one MIGHT work with a non-epic flyer).

PS: The alliance flypath is at the other end of the beach.

Its easy to get a bit disoriented in this zone, especially when trying to find the quest hubs in those sneaky caves. Luckily blizz seems to have an added small landmarks for finding them a bit easier. Look for yellow ''leaves'' waving in the current, those plants mark the locations of the caves.

Currently if you try to go there (like I did with rocket boots and the peek of Gnomeregan) you will be teleported away to a spot in the edge of Dun Morogh. Link here.

When you pick up the quest line from Orgrimmar you get taken there..... you should do the first few quests fine without drowning but after the first few quests you get a buff that allows you constant underwater breathing which is pretty handy for over all quite a substitutional zone.

If you get to Vashj'ir via the intitial quest, do NOT get the fligth point, then hearth back to a major city...to get back to Vashj'ir, you cannot take the boat. You must go to the island in the north east part of stormwind where the earthen people are and take a portal there. Coords: 74, 17.5

I found this zone slightly frustrating given the lack of information (other than on this site) on how to get back and forth from org. Additional frustrations:
1) inability to use my tundra mammoth to sell items
2) inability to use your seahorse if you are standing on the sea floor
3) bugginess of the abysmal depth instance entrance. There was a bug not letting me exit the depth via the npc. Additionally this bugged caused several inexplicable deaths. I had to hearth to get out.

FLIGHT POINTS - EASTERN KINGDOMS/VASHJ'IR LOCATIONS

From Stormwind/Org

AFTER you receive the initial quest to the zone and have taken the boat over
AFTER you've already gone to Vashj'ir

The portals by the Earthen Ring Circle in Stormwind/Org are now open. For Stormwind, the Ring is by Stormwind Keep, a bit to the north. The portal area has seashells and sea fauna around it (bluish portal).

From what I can tell about the portal is it'll port ya to the latest "cave" flight path you've reached.

To return to Eastern Kingdom from Vashj'ir without a hearth
In the first zone (Keep'thar Forest), swim to the surface to the southern region around The Clutch. You should see an island in that vicinity (there may be some swimming required). There is a Horde and Alliance side (very slender piece of island/beach off the mountain). You will have a water flight path *AND* on the land portion an aerial flight path which will then connect you to all the Eastern Kingdom flight paths.

This area is what you see on the Shimmering Expanse map with the blue flight path and red flight path near another. Initially, I thought this was the underwater ones but yeah, break surface and it's referencing the above water island.

Neat, huh?

For the Alliance, Ironforge is the closest (and cheapest) direct route from this spot.

Note, if you are unobservant like me, the Tol Barad portal is NOT the portal that goes back there. That one is restricted to level 85. You want the swirly blue one right next to the Earthen Ring folks, it doesn't look like a standard mage portal, which the Tol Barad one does.

If you're heading TO Vashj'ir, go to one of the Hero's Call Boards and accept Chiamata alle armi: Vashj'ir!

Follow the quest chain and eventually a portal will unlock in Stormwind that you can port back to Vashj'ir.

If you're heading FROM Vashj'ir back to Eastern Kingdoms, make sure to get the flight path near Shimmering Expanse at . There are TWO flight paths here so make sure to get both as only the one on the strand is the one connecting you to Ironforge.

If you had gotten the Sea Turtle from fishing, don't forget that you can use that mount until you get the Sea Horse here in this zone to make the travel at least a little easier to that point.

For those of you that hate swimming around in the stupid water, here is a trick. (this will only work if you are a DK or in a party with a DK, you have to have Path of Frost buffed on you) Go to surface use Path of Frost, or have it buffed to you, then get on top of water hop on your mount and take off to were you need to go!

Warning: There are some places however that will dismount you in abysall depths.

Vashj'ir is a very nice place to farm herbs for Herbalism if you know where to go. I have constructed a route for this, which can be seen here. This route is heavily populated with Stormvine and Azshara's Veil.

This very well could be a stupid question to ask... but my main is a mage so getting from one spot to another is easy.
How does a Horde toon (that's not a mage) go FROM Vashj'ir to Eastern Kingdom? I was questing with my rogue and I can't figure it out, and I already changed my hearth to Vashj'ir. Now I'm trapped here and I really need to get to the mainland.

I flew from Dun Morough to Vashj'ir easy, with a 150% mount. Fatigue got to about 25-30 seconds.

Aquatic Form in Vashj'ir

371% Swim Speed when glyphed (same as the Abyssal Seahorse)
The extra speed boost is available as soon as you have aquired Sea Legs (so a handful of quests earlier than the Seahorse quest)
Insta cast
Can be cast while on sea floor (at least as a Tauren I can't mount the sea horse unless off the ground)
Gathering is possible while in form
Castable while in combat!

So basically it's benefits are the same as the druids flight form except it has the added bonus of being usable during combat... I wouldn't be too surprised if this changed in a future patch.

Ok, so i've done over 115 quests in Hyjal, over 75 in Deepholm and Uldam each but I still can't get the Vashir quests. Wth?

Update: Ah I went back to all the quest givers in the quest line and must have deleted the quest call of duty locaten SE of Org near the dock.

If it hasn't been said yet, Silver Tide Hollow in the Shimmering Expanse appears to be the first "inn" that grants rested xp. I noticed a lot of hearth locations didn't come with rested xp bonus, a pain in attempting to make leveling faster.

If you're someone who wants to make the most of your rest xp, then Vashj'ir is probably not the best place to go. The first place you can start getting any rest xp back (Tide Hollow in the Shimmering Expanse) is about an hour or two into the questing experience - maybe less if you're quick, but probably much, much, more if you're reading all the quest text.

Spatially It can also be a bit frustrating at times, but despite it's hangups it can still be a very fun and unique zone with some cool lore. If nothing else I'd recommend going through it once to see how they dealt with the gameplay mechanics.

This place is pretty fun including the fact that you get a sea horse and its underwater . But it can also be really aggravating , the fact that you have to go one place to another , back and forth . And the most annoying of all , you have to fly with your mount back to Eastern Kingdoms until you get the FP on land . Besides all that , this place is ok and pretty fun . Happy hunting !

The place can be kind've annoying (especially the first couple quests) because unlike most places (besides flying monsters) the monster are all around you. (because they are swimming) I was attacked by a nagas and a gilgoblins and eels within the first couple quests. (which have a really annoying DoT) It however get's better.

Alliance flight master for points on the mainland is on an island (above water) in Shimmering Grotto almost exactly one "Grotto" 's length northeast from the g in Shimmering, at least on my carbonite. Horde is nearby on same island.

If you're a druid, you can make use of Aquatic Form, if glyphed properly it will go as fast as (or faster, can't remember) the Sea Horse mount.

Not only that, it's instant cast AND usable in combat. So the druid's mobility in this zone is extremely smooth.

Question: how I could I get to Vash'jir on a toon that is not high level enough to get the starting quests for it (80)?

A couple months ago I saw that a friend of mine was in the zone, and her toon lvl was in the mid-70's at that time. There was another friend of ours who was "escorting" her around with his lvl 85 toon (probably with a passenger mount like a mammoth or equivalent, but IDK). I asked friend 1 (w/ lower-lvl toon) but she couldn't remember clearly enough to explain. My other friend (w/ the max-lvl toon) isn't online now, so I can't ask him.

But clearly, it can be done. Is there any method of transportation from any place that a less-than-80 toon can use to travel from the mainland to the Vash'jir continent on their own? Or if it can only be done by being brought there by a higher lvl toon, then how? Portal in SW while in a group? A boat from SW or TH while riding on friend's mammoth?
(FYI I don't have Epic Flight or even Artisan Riding, and neither does my friend yet, so I know that's not the answer.)

I had leveled horde-side to 85 completely avoiding Vashj'ir and could not reach the zone due to the call board not having the quest anymore. If you're in this situation, your quest NPC is Comandante Thorak to the right of the dock in Durotar (55.8 , 12.2). He will give you the Call of Duty quest and the Mercenary Ship will appear outside immediately.

The slight hazey ripple effect of the water can be negated by using the follwing command ingame
/console SET ffx "0" with the quote marks on the 0 change the zero to a 1 to reset :)

Getting into one of the Swift Seahorse grottos to find the Seahorse Master is an obscure thing since the underwater entrances to the grottos are a ways away from the coordinate of the Seahorse Master and down at the bottom of a trench nearby.

Here's some help if you are trying to swim down to enter the grottos.

If you lose your quest from one of the call boards that takes you through a couple quests to get to Vashj'ir, you may still be able to pick up the chain from the NPC at the land end of the northern dock in SW - Recruiter Burns at 27.4,24.2.

Note that to get the mercenary boat to appear, you need to go the end of the dock and listen to an ENTIRE dialog by the soldiers there - you probably should not be mounted while listening.

If for some reason the mercenary ship doesn't appear at the end of the dock in SW (note - the mercenary ship is NOT the Kraken), it's best to fly to Vashj'ir from Dun Morogh. Flying from the SW docks just about reaches exhaustion even with a 310% mount. If you have the Hero's Call quest but can't get the mercenary boat, you are flying to Vashj'ir to turn in to Erunak Stonespeaker down inside the hull of the ship at 45.0,23.2 in Vashj'ir.

Pretty good place for skinners since a lot the skinnable mobs there aren't hostile. Another thing which is totally unrelated, druids look like their on the moon when they run on the seafloor here in cat form or bear form, I haven't tested it in tree form and moonkin form yet though.

During the first week of Cata I started this zone on my Shaman (80, Elem). Before day one was over I thought this place was the biggest pile of dung I had ever experienced. The re-spawns were so fast you could not loot before they popped back and the aggro distances were longer than I thought was decent. In hindsight I think that the re-spawn thing was purely a matter of too many people in the zone at one time and no longer applies. As to the aggro distance I can't say as I can't take an 80 or lower into the zone to test. For that matter that might have been the result of too many people in the zone as well.

In the past 10 days I have run 6 toons* all the way thru the zone and I must say I am impressed. They put a lot of effort into the zone and it shows. And as others have mentioned the herbing and skinning are superb. I just wish the Sea Horse you get was usable elsewhere.

There is mistake in the description. The name of the Zone is stated correctly (Vashj'ir), whereas the first mention in the description mentions it as 'Vash'jir', furthermore the last word of the first sentence in the third paragraph also makes this mistake, along with the last word of the last paragraph. Due to the consistency of this mistake (occuring on all typed references within the description) I would say that the author misread the name, which is rather foolish considering the reference to Lady Vashj in the article itself.

People are still getting lost trying to leave Vashj'ir, so just to clarify the directions...

If your hearthstone is set to Vashj'ir and you don't know how to get out:

In Kelp'thar Forest swim to The Clutch in the south region and swim to the surface.
On the map you will see to the west the Shimmering Expanse.
It has an upside-down U-shaped mountain range.
Fly/swim west toward the closest small mountains.
There you will find a beach with Alliance to the north and Horde to the south.
Both have flight paths that can fly you to the Eastern Kingdoms.

As for getting back in if you're not herthed to Vashj'ir:
(after the initial quest and boat ride in)
There are portals by the Earthen Ring Circles in Stormwind and Orgrimmar.

So, if you thought 'Oh, I'm gonna go quest in Vashj'ir!' and took the job-board quest but after turning in the first part realized - 'Screw this, going to Hyjal instead!' You might have abandoned the Vashj'ir quest thus completely setting yourself up for some srs Tom Foolery later on.

I did this and couldn't find where the heck to go. I flew over to Vashj'ir and looked around in the quest hubs and wasted about fifteen minutes going 'Holy hell I'm really confused!'

If you did what I did... no boat to Vashj'ir wanting to take you, no board quest to give you a hunt, no quest givers in the quest hubs...

That means you actually abandoned the quest to actually TAKE the boat. That quest you can get from Recruiter Burns. He is standing on the right before you run onto the dock that normally takes you to Northrend. You will know this is it if he has an exclamation mark on his head and gives you 'Call to Arms.'

Just go on as normal, run to the end of the dock, watch the npcs emote, and then take the boat to Vashj'ir.

Haven't seen such a beautiful zone since old Ashenvale. Shame the dynamics make it a frustrating place to quest and move around in, I imagine if I were into RPing in WoW it would be here.

Don't bother leveling here, 90% of the quests are bugged out to require very specific placement of character or whatever. It's extremely irritating to say the least.

If you changed faction and you cant access the portal in Vashj'ir.
You need to do the Il dovere chiama and to open the portal in Roccavento.

Great region & some excellent quests, but boy it does take an age to complete. The caves are also well hidden & you will get lost a few times trying to find them. Trick is, every time you are sent to a new hub (cave) make it your home. That way you can always get back if you're completely lost.

In a perfect scenario you would head to Vash'jir after completing Northrend, although I have left it until much later. If you want to use Vash'jir for serious leveling then don't leave it too long. Rep values for kills plummet & because of the huge jump in rep needed to move up the quest rep points make this a long slog.
The quest line drops from the command board after you reach a certain level so pick the link up from Recruiter Burns at the dock (Alliance).

Despite what you'll hear from most people, Vashj'ir is a truly amazing zone. It's so atmospheric and beautiful; you can tell that simply from the music that's playable with Wowhead's new feature. The questing told a great story about the Naga, about how you were stranded at sea; struggling to survive out of your element, constantly being hunted by the naga and whatever dark, Old Gods commanded them.

A reason why people hated this zone so much because 95% of it was completely underwater, and while personally i agree that it could've used a few more land parts to it so people don't get bored - I also think Vashj'ir is one of the most unique zones in-game because it gives us a completely new environment from the usual zone which is on land and is probably one of Wow's most aesthetically pleasing zones so far. Blizz really went all out on this zone and i think the main reason people didn't like it is because underwater combat in wow has never been that great, i think blizzard could've used this time to improve the submerged combat in WoW (or atleast do something that changes the mechanics of it while in this zone) to really add that extra sparkle on this magnificent place.

With that being said, i think the good outweighs the bad here - the underwater fighting is pretty tedious, and you're submerged the majority of the time, but this zone is currently WoW's biggest to the point that it had to be split into three separate zones (keep in mind that only continents are made up of different zones in WoW. Vashj'ir is the only exception.) and each one is very beautiful, and atmospheric in numerous ways. You get a rich story-arch that continues through all 3 zones of Vashj'ir along with lots of lore and involvement with the Naga & Old Gods.

I highly encourage you to try out this zone on your main, or AT LEAST one full playthrough on an alt or something during a content drought.

I just went from lvl 80 to 81 in this zone. It is beautiful and lot's of interesting stuff to check out, however moving around in the water is kind of freaking me out. I am going to check out Hyjal to get level up to 82 and report back a comparative experience.

Ok, I decided to keep at it and actually leveled up quick in this zone. It took some getting used to and thanks to Wowhead I managed in fine style. There's a lot of quest lines to complete in this zone and some decent gear was dropped. The storyline, as mentioned in previous posts, was very informative and fills in a lot of game detail.

Overall, it's worth grinding here for a couple of levels.

Ok, just for a little tid bit of information here. If you have previously completed the quests in this area say as like a horde, and then you switch to alliance and attempt to go back (say you are a hunter looking for the spirit crab), you will drown. You HAVE to go back to the hero board and accept it all over again and go through the scenerio and such in order to breath under your new faction. I went back and my breathe meter wouldn't go away. Went to the hero board, and wham there it was.

Confirmation: you can use common flying mount from Dun Morogh to reach this zone.

But if you want to fly (using this mount) from Stormwind, you'll die from fatigue very close to destination place. :(

For the rested XP boost, you can rest in Silver Tide Hollow. It takes quite a few quests to get there just going with the flow.

Coordinates are about 50.73, 40.77 or so. Look for the waving yellow anemone-like plant/creatures that pop out of the purple tubes -- they indicate a cave/grotto/hollow entrance.

There is no need to bind the hearthstone. I got ZZZs upon standing on the dry ground in the STHollow.

Rejoice! I saw no mention of this anywhere but it seems the portals that take you to Cataclysm zones (Level 80 - 85) no longer require you to do their introduction questline to open their respective portal, which is to say, the portal is now open from the get-go.

As of 7th of March 2017 to get to Vashj'ir you MUST do the starting quest.
Pick the quest up from the quest board.
I was forced to do the starting quests on two new alchemy alts when I wanted to transmute volatiles because the Vashj'ir portal was there but couldn't enter it.

If you are too low to get the openning quest, but can fly? Simply go to the westernmost part of Dun Morogh. Keep flying straight out to sea. Your fatigue bar will get to about 50% then you will get to the zone area and it will go back up. The sandy beach FP will be right in front of you. You can then fly over the various parts of the zone and simply drop down and swim in to the different FP caves to pick up the flight paths. Did this to get the Cataclysm bonfire at 72.

I'm in Vashjir with an old avi so I can farm some turtle tongues, and I'm mystified about inns, repairs and so on. My minimap shows a mailbox, repair and so on at 54,71 (Korthun's End), but I've gone all the way from the surface down to the bottom of the sea and not seen anything. Do you have to be on a quest line before these become visible?

Level 120 HORDE here. I needed to get to Vashj'ir to complete the last selfie for Fotografo professionista

When you head to the Cataclysm portals, you will notice the Vashj'ir one is the only one not accessible.

Talk to Chiaroveggente Krogar that is standing there by the portals and do the L'occhio del ciclone quest. The quest is completed by clicking the little water bowl on the little pedestal behind him.

From here, you would expect the next quest Ordine del Capoguerra: Vashj'ir! to pop for you at the Warchief's Command Board but at level 120, it will show the three highest ones for other areas. You can:

A) Keep accepting those quests on the board as it will keep replenishing and eventually you will hit Ordine del Capoguerra: Vashj'ir! to accept.

OR

B) Go to Bladefist Bay outside south exit of Orgrimmar, head to the tower, as you enter you will see Comandante Thorak and he will give you Il dovere chiama. From there, go to the end of the docks and wait for your boat. You will notice the NPCs on the end there begin dialogue and eventually it will lead to introducing the arrival of the boat to Vashj'ir. (Talking about the land that appeared near Eastern Kingdoms).

Get on the boat and take it from there.

You can simply fly to Vasj'ir starting from Khanaros, Dun Morogh. If you're level is high enough you will survive the fatigue. The Portal to Vash'ir in Stormwind 73.3, 17.0 opens up after:

How to Get the Portal to Vashj'ir in Orgrimmar
I was a level 110 Horde losing my mind trying to get to Vashj'ir to complete the Elders of Cataclysm achievement. I've read through tons of comments, and none seemed to get me there, so here's exactly what I did to finally get to Vashj'ir and to get the portal to Vashj'ir from Orgrimmar. It looks like a lot, but I figured this all out and documented here in part of a day, so hopefully it's pretty quick for you.

In Orgrimmar where the Cataclysm portals are in the Western Earthshrine, I had every portal except Vashj'ir. So I accepted Warchief's Command: Vashj'ir. I turned in that quest to Commander Thorak and what I've read says he will give you the Call of Duty quest where you catch a ship to Vashj'ir, but he didn't have the quest exclamation point above his head (I show low-level quests, so that wouldn't be the cause). It seemed for some reason I can't get the A Call of Duty quest yet.

These 3 Solutions From Comments Didn't Work for Me, But Might for Others:

I tried waiting on the dock in Bladefist Bay to see if the ship would just show up. I read a comment saying the ship wouldn't spawn if you were mounted, so I dismounted. The NPC dialogue never played and the ship never showed up.
Looking at the quest series, I see that I probably need to complete To the Depths, which is given by Farseer Krogar, located by the Cataclysm portals. He also does not offer any quests, just says "we're in need of your assistance" when I click on him. I did not need to complete that quest to get to Vashj'ir.
I tried porting to Undercity, flying to the Forsaken Front then just flying/riding my Darkwater Skate mount there, but I got fatigued and died. Headed back to Orgrimmar.

Here's Every Quest I Did to Get to Vashj'ir & Get the Portal in Orgrimmar
I read a couple comments saying it was necessary to complete the Battle for Lordaeron, so I completed that. Commander Thorak still did not offer the Call of Duty quest. I don't know if this had any effect on the following, but it only took maybe 20 minutes.

I started doing the portal city quest series, including:
A Dying World
The Stormwind Extraction (this opened up Zuldazar & the Welcome to Zuldazar series for me, which I completed)

I returned to Orgrimmar and now, Farseer Krogar has 2 quests for me: The Eye of the Storm and The Call of the World-Shaman. I completed both quests and series.

Upon completing Elemental Bonds: Doubt, the next quest was Into Coaxing Tides, WHICH TRANSPORTED ME TO VASJ'IR!

I was able to finally complete the Elders of Cataclysm achievement. I returned to Orgrimmar to see if the Vashj'ir portal had opened, but it hadn't yet.

Although this did not open the portal to Vashj'ir, it did open the Call of Duty quest with Commander Thorak. Upon accepting the quest, I headed to the pier in Bladefist Bay by the Horde banner. The ship off to the left side of the pier disappeared and the ship to Vashj'ir showed up almost immediately. I got on the ship and ended up getting logged out of the game. When I logged back in, the ship was stuck, surrounded by tentacles. I tried to fly off, but I guess I got thrown. Maybe this is normal. I ended up in the Immortal Coil right in front of Erunak Stonespeaker, where I turned in the quest and he gave me the Sea Legs quest. Upon completing the Sea Legs quest, you'll get the Sea Legs spell/buff.

I proceeded to complete the following quests in the following order:
Buy Us Some Time
Traveling on Our Stomachs
Pay Attention!
Finders Keepers
Bring It On!
Blood and Thunder
Better Late Than Dead
The Abyssal Ride - you get the Vashj'ir Seahorse mount here
Good Deed Left Undone
Gimme Shelter!
Ain't Too Proud to Beg

At this point, I went back to Orgrimmar to see if I had the portal and it was finally there! I'm not sure after which completed quest in the list above that I got the portal, but these are all pretty quick to get through if you're higher level. I hope this guide was helpful to you. I was sure losing my mind trying to figure this all out, so I thought I'd share it to help others more efficiently get the portal to Vashj'ir.

Not sure if it's like this for everyone but like 50% of the quest markers are broken like it might say go hand in a quest at this location but the actual quest hand in is like 200 meters away in a completely different location, also a ton of the mobs specifically the naga near the big castle are like half phased into the ground for some reason wrote a bug report but don't expect much to come of it lol.

Anybody else having an issue using the portal for Vash'jir after the latest patch? I can't zone in. I can zone in to all of the other areas (Hyjal, Twilight, Deepholm and Uldum) but not Vash'jir. Is it a bug or a change to make that zone unplayable?

Horde folks: if you're like me and you never opened up Vash'jir and you've gotta venture there for the Viticcio Spirastretta for the Esca per Aurelide, the quest to start/open it up is Il dovere chiama, given by Comandante Thorak to the east of the Orgrimmar entrance down by the docks (he's inside the tower).

To get here as a F2P you can use either a water walking potion or a water mount like the Sea Turtle or Druid travel form. Swim to a location west of the Dun Morogh mountains then head west towards the mountains in the distance. These are the coordinates you need:
