News Round Up: WoW Loses 800k More Subscribers, Mists of Pandaria Interview, and More
Blizzard had their third quarterly call for the year that reported losses. World of Warcraft lost
800,000 subscribers
for this quarter--following a
600k loss this May
and
300k subscriber loss in August
over the past two quarters.
In the call, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said the majority of subscriptions lost came from China and other countries in the East. They also declined to provide a forecast for future numbers. However, though this may seem like a shocking number, you have to remember that this is during a lull in the expansion. Without major content patches, WoW tends to lose subscribers only to regain them during an expansion's launch. Here's to hoping Mists of Pandaria brings players back!
Without further ado, here's the news round up.

Dev Watercooler - The Great Item Squish (or Not) of Pandaria
The item level and stat inflation on gear gets more and more pronounced between expansions--or even new patches. The devs wanted to touch upon this problem at BlizzCon, but ran out of time. In this Dev Watercooler, they address the problems related to stat budgets and propose several solutions. Nothing is set in stone, but the solutions are really interesting to analyze.
We've also got some minor changes to 4.3 PTR patch notes at the end of the post. Of particular note is that Tol Barad Veteran now requires 25 wins, down from 100, and Death Knight pets now properly inherit their master’s crit and spell penetration stats.

But several of us did bring up the issue with players and media we talked to, and it even ended up in at least one FAQ, so we figured we’d go

BlizzCon 2011 Coverage Roundup
It's been a busy week for Ashelia and myself in the wake of BlizzCon. Like our 4.3 coverage roundup a few weeks back, we wanted to organize everything related to BlizzCon in one post--because we know there's some awesome things that slipped through the cracks in your first read-through. We'll be launching a full Mists of Pandaria guide shortly (that will include even more information released outside of BlizzCon--like Thursday's Dev Q&A), but in the meantime, catch up on all the news coverage and relive the last weekend!

Blizzard Insider #42 -- Meet the Pandaren Monk
With the launch of the next World of Warcraft® expansion, the Mists of Pandaria™ will lift to reveal the pandaren, a long-secluded race that has spent generations mastering the way of the monk -- World of Warcraft’s newest playable class.
To get an inside look at the upcoming World of Warcraft race and class options, the Blizzard Insider recently sat down with Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street to discuss the design decisions that went into creating the pandaren monk. So read on, and be among the first to meet the brawling heroes who are, even now, secretly training within the mists.
Blizzard Insider:
How will the pandaren race differ from the other races of Azeroth? What ideas are being explored for their racial abilities?
Ghostcrawler:
Ultimately, the challenge with races is to make them feel unique without actually providing them with so much power that players feel like they don’t have a choice in which race they want to be. If tauren are the best warriors, then Horde players might feel like they are sacrificing too much in order to try out a different race or stick with a race they really like. With t

Mists of Pandaria Live Developer Q&A and Transcript
While there's been developer chats in the past, tonight's chat is quite special--it covers Mists of Pandaria mere days after all the BlizzCon 2011 announcements. I'll be transcribing the Q&A below, after some highlights.
Q&A Highlights
Separate player hubs for both Horde and Alliance on Pandaria--will encourage world PvP.
New cap for professions is 600, no plans to add a new professions. Pet battles will be fun alternative to powerleveling professions.
Unhappy with the implementation of Prime glyphs since they are no-brainers to choose--may be removed.
Pet battles will grant XP in the same way to gathering professions--a decent perk.
Cooking will remain a secondary skill, but there will be specializations.
Valor, conquest, profession, and faction vendors will be scattered around world to encourage travel.
Possibility of increasing conquest point caps by 10-15%, for extra rewards for world pvp.
New guild levels and perks in MoP.
Expect quest hubs that change faction/control like Baradin Hold in MoP.
Players can only queue for scenarios in specific areas--goal is not to have players waiting for queues in major cities only.

News Round Up: Guild Services, Mists of Pandaria Talents, and More
A lot of news following the aftermath of BlizzCon. We've also got a cool contest coming up that I just got into today--it should launch before the end of the week, so be on the lookout for it!
Guild Services: Relocation, Faction Changes & Name Changing
We are in the process of adding new guild services that will make relocating to a new realm, switching factions, or changing your guild name easier than ever before. Relocating your guild to a new realm or faction with this new service will keep your guild structure intact, including the guild leader, guild bank, ranks, and guild name (depending on availability). You won't even need to pack.
Guild members who decide to relocate with their guild may initiate their own paid character transfer. Upon a successful transfer they will automatically be part of the guild when they first log into the new realm. Their guild rank and guild reputation will be intact.
Guild leaders who do not want a change of scenery may also choose to pick a new guild name using another new service.
As a part of the process for adding these new services, we are launching on a single realm (Illidan-US) to perform additional t

BlizzCon 2011: Mists of Pandaria Talent Calculator, Today's Panels, and More
Today was another huge day, so we have combined this post into a day two guide--nothing was quite big enough to stand out on its own.
However, we have some pretty big news here at Wowhead. All weekend, we had a huge focus on Mists of Pandaria, and our team manned up and worked overtime on a special project.
Even though the new talents are going to be changed and retooled, we have built an initial version of
a Mists of Pandaria talent calculator
! This was just a
huge
team effort, pretty much everyone worked very hard on it. Thanks everyone for putting in overtime during BlizzCon weekend just to get a visual representation of the contents.

Oh, and Noxy was also awesome and drew a comic about her feelings about Mists of Pandaria. She thinks you might find it similar to other games on the market...

Cheat Sheet for Mists of Pandaria
Rather than force you to sift through liveblogs and official previews, Perculia and Ashelia have broken down exactly what is coming with Mists of Pandaria. Find out what's happening, what you'll be doing, and more with this first peak cheat sheet we've included right here at the top of the post.
And, of course, Perculia got some immediate hands-on time with the starting zone. Word on the street is that she rolled around a lot and had a blast--but maybe you should read her actual preview below!

Leveling in Pandaria
Pandaria has been shrouded in a mist. The alliance and horde wash up on the shores of Pandaria during a naval battle. They immediately want it for their own for the war--so they are going to destroy the pandaren to get its resources!
I was able to test out most of the starting zone in the press room--here's my thoughts!

BlizzCon 2011: Opening Ceremony
We have our team at BlizzCon down in Anaheim and some of us are watching the stream at home. We're bringing you the latest and liveblogging the opening ceremony plus the World of Warcraft panels. Since this is the first BlizzCon without leaks, this should be a pretty huge opening--it's confirmed there will be a new expansion for World of Warcraft, but it also looks like there will be tons of new other announcements.
Make sure to join in the discussion here in this post as if you're watching along on the stream.
Notable highlights:
Free Diablo III to WoW players via new 'Annual Pass'.
Mists of Pandaria confirmed. Level 90 cap. New class is monk. New race is pandaren.

Blizzard Trademarks "Mists of Pandaria," Next Expansion?
Put on your tinfoil hats--it looks like an April Fools' joke may become a reality. Last week, Blizzard filed for a trademark for "Mists of Pandaria" under computer software. This is a common practice for the registration of expansion titles; for example, the Cataclysm was filed for trademark on June 26, 2009 and its domain was bought subsequently. Similarly, a Pandaria domain was also purchased last week.
This means that it's possible that the next expansion will be announced at BlizzCon and that it will be Mists of Pandaria.
Let the speculation run wild--what do you guys think? Is this our future expansion or a false alarm? Will the pandarens be a playable race for both sides, a neutral faction even though Blizzard has said that they like factions to be identifiable and distinct for horde and alliance? Or maybe their role will be more of a lore one, focusing on them as quest hubs and a central conflict?
Click here to see the official filing!
