I was a music major in college too. Can't believe I missed that Stravinsky nod at 1:16! (Rite of Spring opening bassoon solo - nearly) Of course it's been awhile.I think this piece is incredible overall. I love the use of various familiar themes mixed with some new ones. It's evocative of memories from past Warcraft content while also looking toward the new expansion content. The composer clearly had this in mind. Personally I enjoy the choral sections along with many of the brass heavy sections (former euphonium player). As for some people's concerns about the first minute or so, let me offer this perspective. The name of this piece is "The Shattering" and it is written for the Cataclysm expansion. The jarring almost violent rhythms (another Stravinsky homage perhaps?) along with the use of dissonant harmonies and at times a-symetric meter are well-suited for music depicting a world torn asunder by a cataclysmic event (such as Deathwing's return). Just something to consider. Of course it's always up to the listener themselves to determine whether or not they enjoy the piece and I certainly respect anyone's opinion on this matter. You either like it or don't. However, I feel the composer has done an outstanding job of giving us an evocative piece of music to begin our exposure to the new expansion and allow us to immerse ourselves in this new world and the events surrounding the Cataclysm and Deathwing's arrival.Bravo!
