This'll mean that the ton of BOE vendor or item drop Aquatic pets can be useful when you convert them to Rare.

Pesce Palla Viola, Piccolo Pesciolino, Rapidino, Ser Freddolino, Pesciolino, and Pincopallina are good examples of great pets that are only limited by the fact that they are learned as Uncommon only.

Family specific Flawless Battle-stones can be found in the Sack of Pet Supplies obtained from performing Pet Trainer quests, and are Bind on Pickup.

If you are a serious rare pet collector, don't use the stones on your caught pets until you've upgraded all these first. They can not be upgraded in any other way.

Inspired by QuickBASIC37's post on Flawless Battle-Stone, I've made exhaustive lists of green-only pets, with alternate pets with the same type and moveset (although not necessarily the same stats) that can be obtained as rare without using a Battle-Stone.

(Much of this data is taken from WarcraftPets.)

Fishy - Same moveset as Tiny Goldfish, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Jubling - Standard toad moveset. Mojo is always rare, and there are more than a dozen wild alternatives, such as Small Frog and Toad.
Mr. Chilly - Pengu is always rare, and Tundra Penguin is wild and can be rare.
Sea Pony - There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Shore Crawler - Strand Crawler is always rare, and Emperor Crab, Shore Crab, Spirebound Crab, and Strand Crab are wild and can be rare.
Speedy - Darkmoon Turtle is always rare, and Softshell Snapling, Spiny Terrapin, and Turquoise Turtle are wild and can be rare.
Tiny Goldfish - Same moveset as Fishy, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Tree Frog - Standard toad moveset. See Jubling above for alternatives.
Wood Frog - Standard toad moveset. See Jubling above for alternatives.

Just received one of these after winning a pet battle in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

Just got one when capturing a rare Eternal Strider in the vale. Used it on Fishy and upgraded him to rare quality. So far have not gotten any stones from the pet supplies, and this is the first high-level rare I have caught (needed to catch) since the patch went live, so I think ill spend less time on the daily quests and more time capturing rares, even if I have them already. Cheers!

If you are going to use a flawless stone of any variety consider leveling the pet to 25 first. It will take the pet down to level 23 and you will get credit for hitting 25 both times on the level x number of pets to level 25 achievements.

To use this item you have to summon the pet you want to upgrade target them and use it on them. Don't try to use it on pets while the are in the pet journal like I did.

While working on Una mandria professionista I farmed/battled pets in Vale of Eternal Blossoms for the most part. Received 4 of these aquatic stones during battle wins. If you're in need of one of them, this is the perfect spot to farm it.

After fighting in the same area with aquatic pets for few hours, I managed the get 2 of these.

Using the stone on an uncommon level 1 Tiny Goldfish granted 5 health, 1 speed, and 1 power

The Emperor Crab and the Leopard Tree Frog (two pets you can get as rare) are well worth using this battle-stone especially if you have the correct breed. The Emperor Crab is best as a power model, the Leopard Tree Frog as a speed model.

The Emperor Crab power breed can be used to consistently take out two (and even finish off the first of the elite pets of the Pandaren Fire Spirit in TownlongSpirito del Fuoco dei Pandaren. Using Surge, Healing Mists, and Shell Shield make it nearly invincible in many battles, and also make it excellent for capturing and leveling other pets. Rares of this model may be worth your time in trying to acquire one.

Leopard Tree Frog speed breeds are not plentiful even in poor quality, so you can imagine how difficult it is to find a rare of this specific breed. If you come across one that has a 50 point difference or greater between power and speed, make room in your journal for it. It probably isn't worth your time to try for the rare model. (I wish I would have had this advice before I started to work on it.) BTW, going first and morphing with Frog Kiss is extremely effective </hmm>.

Capture these two pets rare or get them stoned ;)

Just re-affirming that these stones tend to drop off the mob you encounter. Just killed off a group led by an emerald turtle and this aquatic stone landed in my bag at the end.

Will the stats on a pet be any different, If I use the stone on a higher level pet, or on one low level, then level it up?

Even though these are Soulbound, they can be, in a sense, sold. The way I went about doing this is I bought a Rana degli Alberi off the AH for 10g, applied this item to it, and then resold it (almost instantly, I may add), for 1k gold. I'm guessing this could be done for any of the aquatic pets listed by "AMIB" and "rhinoloupe" in their posts. I honestly have no idea which one would stand to provide the best profit as I know very little about battle pets and their respective values. Maybe others with more knowledge could reply with their advice.

Using the Pietra Evolutiva Rara Acquatica

1. Go to your pet journal then select and summon the pet you want to upgrade.
2. Target the pet you summoned in step 1.
3. Right click on the Pietra Evolutiva Rara Acquatica in your inventory.
4. Don't panic - your pet still seems to be same quality and you suspect you wasted your stone - but....
5. Dismiss and summon again to see your shiny, rare quality (blue), lean, mean, fighting machine.

You CAN farm a specific type of Battle-Stone by battling pets of that same type. While you may occasionally receive some other type of stone, you definitely have a higher chance of receiving an aquatic stone by fighting aquatic pets, for example. I kept reading people say that the type of battle pet you fight has nothing to do with the type of Battle-Stone you receive, and that it's completely random. My experience had shown that not to be true, so I decided to do some testing and post my results in case anyone wanted to farm for a specific type of Battle-stone.

Battling Aquatic pets (which have 3 aquatic pets about 50% of the time, and 2 aquatic/1 flying about 50% of the time.) My results: 178 battles = 6 Aquatic stone, 1 Flying stone, 1 Humanoid stone

Battling Flying pets (which have 3 flying pets about 50% of the time, and 2 flying/1 aquatic about 50% of the time.) My results: 142 battles = 3 Flying stone, 1 Aquatic stone, 1 Critter stone, 1 Flawless Battle-Stone (which can be used on anything)

Battling Critter pets which usually have all Critters, and occasionally have a Beast in the group. My results: 96 battles = 3 Critter stone, 1 Beast stone

As you can see, it would appear that you can indeed farm a certain kind of stone. Just find an area where you want to level your lowbie pets that has the type of critters consistent with the stone you need the most of (usually Beast, Flying or Critter, since these types have the most pets that cannot be obtained above Uncommon quality.) Also, remember that if you've got one or two stones of a type you don't need, you can farm the additional one(s) to make 3, and then trade them in for a Marked Flawless Battle-Stone that can be used for any pet. Good luck!

If you're finding a lot of these, but want to upgrade a different-type pet, you can trade three of any family-specific battle stones to Audrey Burnhep (Stormwind 69.4, 25.1) or Varzok (Orgrimmar 52.5 59.3) for one Marked Flawless Battle-Stone.

Since AMIB hasn't been around for more then a year, I would like to continue the trend and I've finished the other pet types:

Mechanical
Undead

For those that didn't read AMIB's post, these are lists of uncommon-only pets, with if available, alternate pets with the same type and moveset that can be obtained as rare without using a Battle-Stone.

I kno they are pointless now with the ease to buy charm stones but still wondered...
