This is used for one thing, and one thing only: the Philosopher's Stone. Every alchemist will need one, but once you've made one you're done. That means every 200+ alchemist will only ever need one of these, so considering the number of miners around and how common it is, this isn't very valuable.

It can still sell decently (think 50s) simply because a lot of people don't know what it's for and thus don't bother to AH it, but expect the majority of the black vitriol found to simply be vendor trash.

i just found one of these in a mithril vien id been mining iron gold silver mithril and truesilve and i only have had one of these dropped thought it was rare, i exspect its worth more than 50s now northrend has opened

Un'Goro is a good place to get your Black Vitriol, plenty of Small Thorium Veins around the perimeter, and a few Rich Thorium Veins as well.

The Black Vitriol will only drop from the small veins, but Thorium is usually a decent seller so by the time your Black Vitriol drops, you'll most likely have 2-4 stacks of Thorium to sell as well.

I had to do one and a half runs around Un'Goro before my Black Vitriol was good enough to make an appearance, and finished off with nearly 4 stacks of Thorium as well. (50G per stack on AH, as well as a good wedge of Dense Stone.)

Obviously you'll need to have mining, or have an alt with mining to do this, and it'd help if you were mining with an 80 as the mobs will completely ignore you.

So don't despair if there's none on the AH (there wasn't for me), it's not that hard to farm it out.

Oddly, this will not go in a Mining Bag, an Engineering Bag, or a Gem Bag. And, because it's used in Alchemy, I tried and it will also not go in an Herb Bag. It comes from an ore node, and it's gathered via mining, but will not go in any related bag. Useless (nearly) item that even the bags dont want to be associated with. Sad.

I am a 525 Miner/Blacksmith and I mined 258 Thorium in Un'goro with my level 85 and got zero Black Vitriol.

I, too, thought that each higher-level stone replaced the one before...like an Enchanter's rod. Much to my dismay, I encountered an exception, and found myself making a new Philosopher's Stone. I don't remember which recipe was being so ticky, but suspect it was a transmute. At that time, I also recreated the other lower-level ones I'd replaced (I was skill-level 525 at the time, just avoid another issue...lol).

sad part, it seems they might have nerfed the drop rate pretty hard on 5.3 PTR. I spent a couple hours and roughly 6 spins around un'gorro last night without a single drop and another two spins around today and no drop either.. About to go do a couple more but this feels like the old 3 hour tour syndrome to me.

Just updating info: Apparently, Black Vitriol doesn't drop from Thorium anymore. I got about 4 from Mithril in Thousand Needles today. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add that I find these a lot more from mithril rather than thorium veins. A run around searing gorge or burning steppes will usually yield me 4-5 black vitriols.

If you wanted to farm this for any reason, a nice place to farm this is from Mithril Deposits in the Burning Steppes. The deposits spawn everywhere along the mountains, approximately every 60 yards. This is what I looted in one lap:

Mithril Ore: 102
Course Stone: 99
Citrine: 1
Black Vitriol: 2

I spent a lot of time mining for this shot from mithrils in badlands I got 0 black vitriol and 3 tainted vitriols. Ii must say I'm quite disappointed. Mine is cataclysm by the way.

Today I farmed around silithus( not sure about the spelling) probably 6 rounds. I got 15 stacks of thorium, 1 "tainted" vitriol and a lot of stone, but 0 black vitriol. I've given up on my philosopher stone.

zero thorium veins in burning steppes when I did the circuit. However, Winterspring is all Thorium and I picked up 3 Black Vitirol within half a circuit around the mountains. Plus various jewels, and arcane crystals.

So I had a stack of 40 of these rotting in my bank and I was choosing valuable items to put into a character's inventory that I was changing realms from a medium to "full" population server. I nearly just vended them but forgot, and when I got to the high population server, they were selling for 5,000g each! I lowballed them down to 3k and made the fastest 120k gold you could imagine. They are still going for 10g on my medium population server, so... *headsplosion*.

I did a whole circuit around Badlands, then Searing Gorge, mined dozen of any kind of mineral deposits. At the start of the second circuit in Badlands, I got a Black Vitriol. The final ore count is:
243 Solid Stone
171 Mithril Ore
15 True Silver Ore
9 Gold Ore
1 Thorium Ore (dropped from an elite)
1 Black Vitriol

The comments say Burning steppes because that has the most mithril but I got only one in thirty minutes where Ungoro Crater thorium spawns black vitriol almost every time. Alchemists use it to level up skills with something they have to sell as vendor trash

The best place to farm Vetriolo Nero so far is Cratere di Un'Goro.
You can mine it from Vena Ricca di Torio and Vena Piccola di Torio.
