I may be terribly unlucky, but by my count, I've looted and skinned 32 monsters that should drop these and have not yet found a scale. With even a 15% drop rate I should have seen at least 3... I'll try a few more to see if my luck changes, but these may be bugged somehow.

My mistake, after 54 kills one dropped. However (and I realize my sample size isn't sufficient) the drop rate may have been changed on this from what's listed here. Your mileage may vary but happy hunting!

This thing needs to be updated. The whelps in the Wetlands are no longer Red Whelps, but Ebon Whelps and drop only Black Whelp Scales. WTF Blizzard? Why the change?

Was checking an old alt I don't play anymore and found some of these scales in her bag. They are gray now and the one recipe that I remember using them, Red Whelp Gloves no longer need them. (Can still make the gloves, they just use medium leather now.)

I just noticed these went gray tonight when I was on my bank toon. That's why I came here to see if they were still used. Apparently not. I always thought it sucked that they only stacked to 5. I just wish I knew they were going gray before Cataclysm.
