Obsidium is broadly equivalent to Cobalt or Fel-Iron in cataclysm.

Currently in the beta, folded obsidium is made and used exclusively by blacksmiths - hopefully, this will be changed before release to give blacksmiths a commodity to sell above cost.

What blacksmithing skill will i need to start making this?

My blacksmith char has 446 now and the last four points will be abit time consuming and/or expensive.
Since it is listed as yellow at 450 i reckon i can start making them when i'm at 446?

The ability to create Folded Obsidium is learned at a Blacksmithing trainer. It is not a level 450 skill (and is thus a little higher in the list), which makes it a little hard to find.

Found some of these in the AH for 200g... each. Is that normal for this item?

Folded Obsidium can be trained at level 425. Therefore, there's no more need to use expensive WotLK mats to get to 450. Just make these all the way from 425 to 455, you will need them all (and probably even more).

Why can't I find a trainer to teach this to me? I have a skill level of 460, but every trainer I visit doesn't even have it on the list....

I'm still curious as to the existence of this item in game. The only conceivable use for it that I can think of is to offer a blacksmithing equivalent to Obsidium bolts. Reverting recipes that require say 12 folded obsidium into 24 obsidium bars would be no different, other than possibly filling unnecessary inventory slots.

The short of it is that it's a one-way transaction, converting a material that can be used for myriad purposes into something with a more specific use. It's really not a new or obscure concept, and certainly isn't limited to the engineer's Obsidium bolts. Consider the following examples:

Cloth to tailors' bolts (and bandages.)
Ore to bars (and, subsequently, to engineers' bolts, JCers' settings, and folded obsidium, amongst others.)
Pigments to inks - particularly noteworthy since the only real purpose pigments serve in and of themselves is to act as half an ink.

For people like me who are wondering where this recipe is to use, make sure you are not trying to find it in your Smelting menu and that you are looking in your Blacksmithing menu instead, I spent far too long trying to figure out where it was, so learn from my mistake and make sure you are looking in the right Profession.
