This mount brings back some good memories (i just got it on my Undead DK)....oh those endless nights in AQ, this was a skin of the Bug mounts that you were able to get from AQ, saddly you could only use them in there. Blizz did a good job with Archaeology, thanks for the nostalgia.

Just got this queued as my 3rd Tol'Vir rare. It will be my 20th completed for Tol'Vir.

I've spent all my time, minus a few hours in EK leveling archaeology up initially, in Kalimdor. For other hunters to compare, at scepter being queued I have all NE/Fossil rares.

I haven't noticed this on any of the other wowhead pages, so excuse me if it's redundant. This was the history text that the scepter displayed before it was solved. ~~It's not the same description that you see when you check the completed artifacts section~~. This now shows up when you mouse-over the scepter in the completed artifacts section; also added the portion from the history itself.

History:

The aqir were a race of incredibly evil, expansionistic insects who battled the troll empires for thousands of years. Eventually, the great Azj'Aqir civilization split in half, with Azjol-Nerub in the north, and Ahn'Qiraj in the south. The night elves were able to contain the qiraji for many years until they were awakened again by the Old God C'thun.

completely baffling as to why this is Tol'vir when it has a much stronger connection (ie: it HAS a connection) to the Nerubians (who were once the same species as the Qiraji)

I think you're coming at this with the wrong attitude. Yes it's a rng grind, and yes that means it could take a very long time. But consider this: each time you solve you have a chance at the mount being your next project. Those of you who've farmed Baron's mount, or who used to farm ZG, know that the more frequently you are given a chance at the drop the higher your probability over time of seeing it. And, with the way this works, you can get multiple solves per day compared to the old 3 day lockouts of ZG, etc.

Just tough it out, and keep going. I don't plan on purchacing the keystones everytime, I'm just sovling as I'm able to. (I realise this isn't the most fragment efficient, but I don't want to burn all my money on this either) I expect it to take some time, and in the meantime I'm selling Highborne Scrolls on my server for 50-80g each. Put on some good music, and just keep going, and eventually you'll be rewarded for your efforts, and it'll make it just that much more satisfying.

Also, you can use this macro to help you keep track of your artifact counts by race:

This was probably one of the most heart thumping moments in WoW when my next discovery was indeed what i'd been farming non stop for.

It wasn't yet another Castle of sand -_-

I understand why people talk about how long it took, they simply want to tell someone about the joy they felt when they received the item.

So congratulations to all who succeeded in the grind, i know your joy, i understand, just don't rub it in others faces, intentionally or not.

Just got my mount after my 61th Solve, I'm so happy you can't even imagine. Anyway, I got the Scarab pendant and the Scarab ring within the first 15 solves. It was a long run to get the mount and fustrating at most, but keep it up and you will eventually get it aswell! Here are some tips / facts in getting the mount and archaeology in general:

Since the patch it is not possible to collect more then 200 artifacts. My tactic was just solving as I got enough artifacts to do a Tol'Vir solve. But don't expect the mount to be your next project, just keep on solving and go on to the next digsite. It will come up eventually.
Do something else while your flying to digsites, watch a movie, listen to music, watch tv and try to do some battlegrounds to break the boringness. Anything to keep you going really.
When auto-flying, watch out for low skyboxes like Ashenvale. You really need to fly through the tree's to get through Ashenvale.
Yes, it is possible to have three Tol'Vir digsites at once. I only had this once though.
The most rare artifacts in a row was five, they were five Highborne Scrolls though. My most rare Tol'Vir artifacts in a row was three.
Artifacts can spawn up to two times at the same spot. So you are picking up a artifact and it will spawn at the exact same spot again, twice.
It is possible for Tol'Vir digsites to spawn another Tol'Vir digsite when your done.
When your a horde mage, use your teleport to get around the map faster. Druids can use Moonglade spawn, but it's not really effective because there aren't many digsites around moonglade. Shamans get your Astral Recall glyph so you can port to Ogrimmar faster. Also use the portals to Hyjal and Uldum at Ogrimmar.
When a Tol'Vir digsite pops up, I generally went straight for it to get the artifacts. This because it has more chance to spawn another digsite in Uldum because of one more free spot, well, this is what I think atleast.
I didn't do archaeology before the patch where they implented the gold values of the items that you solve. So I made up to 15k gold while going for the mount. I also sold all my Highborne Scrolls etc. but I did used my Tol'Vir rares to make it go a little faster.
Last but not least, Don't give up!. I had many occasions where I thought I was going to quit. I know people have it way worse with having over a 100 solves and no mount, but it still is very fustrating knowing that it has a dropchance and may never drop for you. I also farmed the Winterspring mount before the nerf, but you had a 100% garantuee that you will get the mount at the end of the race, this race is way worse.

Addition to my theory I described earlier, I think that 19 of the 26 rares in game have fairly fast/high proc chances, and the remaining 7 are much rarer. Meaning getting that last project for your title was probably a #$%^& (or you got lucky). Now you're stuck trying to get the last few very rare solves.

Notable about this mount is that when you log out mounted and log back in, you're not mounted anymore. Probably a glitch but might be inconvenient in some cases.

Scepter of Azj'Aqir:

About 16,000 years ago, the Gurubashi and Amani empires had little love for one another, but rarely warred against each other. At the time, their greatest common enemy was a third empire -- the civilization of Azj'Aqir. The aqir were intelligent insectoids who ruled the lands of the far west. These clever insectoids were greatly expansionistic and incredibly evil. The aqir were obsessed with eradicating all non-insect life from the fields of Kalimdor.

The trolls fought them for many thousands of years, but never succeeded in winning a true victory over the aqir. Eventually, due to the troll's persistence, the aqiri kingdom split in half as its citizens fled to separate colonies in the far northern and southern regions of the continent.

Two aqiri city-states emerged -- Azjol-Nerub in the northern wastes, and Ahn'Qiraj in the southern desert. Though the trolls suspected that there were other aqiri colonies beneath Kalimdor, their existence was never verified.

Both city-states were built upon conquered tol'vir cities.

The Azj'Aqir kingdoms of Azjol-Nerub and Ahn'Qiraj have also survived in present day Northrend and Tanaris (respectively).

Jut got mine today. Took me 35 solves to get it. I didn't expect to get it and it popped up. People say to do tol'vir site right when the site spawns but i feel like its faster if you let the tol'vir sites stack for some reason. Good luck to all who endure archeology to get this mount and don't give up!

I can also confirm the common pattern of ring - amulet - mount. Got it today, my 94th Tol'vir solve. Finally, after all those hours of grinding, i sit on the best gorund mount ever.

I'd like to but in and put half of an end to the ring > amulet > mount theory. I started farming this recently and I got the amulet fairly early on and then much later got the ring. I don't think there's necessarily an order to it but rather completely RNG.

Seeing people state 20-60 solves and feeling hard done by makes me wonder. I'm over 350 Tol'vir solves, have 4/6 Tol'vir rares. I have all Night Elf and Fossil rares, but still no Scettro di Azj'aqir. The other rare I am missing is Bastone di Ammunae so it seems that there is no set pattern to the acquisition of rares. It's pure RNG, and some are luckier than others. Good hunting, Dr. Jones.

I haven't gotten this yet, not sure exactly how many solves I have (anyone knw how to check? I had this macro once but it didn't work after a few times...weird) but I think I'm in the 30s or 40s.

So far I've had the pendant and ring solved, and now just a huge streak of common artifacts, I doubt there is a pattern, but I sure hope there is because I always hear of people getting the pendant and ring then the mount after common solves.

I'll report back if I solve it.

Scettro di Azj'aqir (and the Insetto da Guerra Qiraji Ultramarino that it teaches) is arguably the most coveted artifact obtainable through Archeologia. The following is my guide to grinding this out as efficiently as possible as a level 85 (applicable to 90s too).

Things that I did:

I prepared myself mentally that I might have to reach at least 200 Tol'vir solves before sniffing this out.
I would consider heading to Tol'vir sites whenever they popped depending on proximity, though more often than not I'd farm northern dig sites until I had clusters in the south - this would usually end up including a couple of Uldum sites. People on Wowhead have gone to great lengths to decipher the statistical probability of pushing Tol'vir sites - some say dig them up immediately upon spawning, others say let them stack. Both methods have sound rationale. Personally, I went with convenience (or my mood at the time), and avoided absolutes.
I would use Hyjal and Uldum portals to get to northern or southern ends quickly.
I took mage portals to Theramore (as an Alliance toon), and set my Pietra del Ritorno to Desolace. Horde players could probably just port directly to Thunderbluff instead.
I would also use Ultima Reliquia di Argus whenever it was available as pot luck (so long as my Pietra del Ritorno or Manto della Cooperazione was off cooldown in the event I ended up somewhere completely inconvenient) - sometimes I'd land close to where I wanted to be... And if not, I'd mosey on 'home' and carry on from there.
Whenever dig sites where close to each other, I would fly in a straight line from one to the other.
I used Geroglifico dei Tol'vir whenever I could get my hands on them (I bought up EVERYTHING on my server and even transferred alts to other servers to buy up more and return to my main archaeologist - this option is only for the die-hard). I would also advertise in trade chat and in every zone I entered with the following: "WTB Geroglifico dei Tol'vir and lots of them. Paying 600g each. PST or COD. Tell your friends, tell your guildies..."

This ensured everyone knew I was on the hunt and it meant my personal supply of keystones wouldn't dwindle too much. Also bear in mind prices on your server will vary, and your interest alone could spike the market by 200-300g - my server pricing spiked to 1k!

Unfortunately I did solve at least 30-40 without keystones when I ran out... The fragments cap is 200. Beyond that, it will not let you dig anymore. It will come up with the equivalent of 'Inventory is Full'. So at least your fragments won't disappear into a virtual abyss.

I solved everything I could when I could irrespective of its race, including Tol'vir.

With 4.3 (and most recently 5.04), it became possible to get as many as 54 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments in a single dig site. This means that you can solve one common Tol'vir artifact after every digsite by using up to two keystones (Geroglifico dei Tol'vir) given that common solves required 45 fragments, and with two keystones, you only need 21 actual Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments to complete the solve and push the next one.

Since the release of MoP, you can also trade a Manufatto Restaurato for a Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir which contains more Tol'vir fragments and can also include an additional keystone.

Most importantly, I just kept digging!

Myths about Scettro di Azj'aqir:

There is no guaranteed order in which you will get this artifact 'pop' - ring>amulet>mount is a popular theory. If you have scanned as many wowhead pages (deleted and other), forums and all other manner of online content, you will know that everyone has different data. Sometimes there are similarities or congruencies, but at the end of the day... RNG is still bloody RNG. Love it hate it, that's how WoW rolls.
There is no guaranteed number of solves at which point you will get this artifact 'pop' - some people say they got it on their first, others woefully carry on beyond 400! It does appear that the median might lie between 100 and 200.
You do not need to have all your BoA rares on your digging toon in order to get this to pop - though if you choose to for luck's sake, it doesn't hurt! Some people wear lucky underwear.

Truths about Scettro di Azj'aqir (and digging for it):

It does exist!
Tol'vir sites will be more likely to spawn based on a recent Blizzard update suggesting that if you have solved all rare artifacts for any other race (Night Elves and Fossils will be applicable here), then those races' dig sites will be less likely to spawn, therefore increasing the chance of Tol'vir, Troll and Dwarven dig sites.
It is possible to have all four Kalimdor dig sites in Uldum.
It will turn heads in cities and battlegrounds - many people will think you found a loophole with your AQ mounts and ask how you did it.

There are six rare Tol'vir artifacts:

Pendente dello Sciame di Scarabei requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (my 5th Tol'vir solve)
Anello dell'Imperatore Bambino requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (my 12th Tol'vir solve)
Bastone di Ammunae requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (my 32nd Tol'vir solve)
Artiglio Strisciante requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (my 50th Tol'vir solve)
Scimitarra dello Scirocco requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (still don't have it - my warrior tank would have loved this pre-Firelands)
Scettro di Azj'aqir requiring 150 fragments with 3x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used (my 126th Tol'vir solve 05/03/12 - follow the item link for screenshots)

There is also one common artifact that alchemists will eagerly hunt for, as it has a chance of containing Ricetta: Fiala delle Sabbie:

Vaso Canopo requiring 45 fragments with 2x Geroglifico dei Tol'vir that can be used

For a complete tally of ALL the archaeology solves you have slaved through, use the following macro (updated for MoP):

there seems to be a bug (lol) with this mount in combination with the deathwing polearm Kiril, Fury of Beasts, you can mount it even though you have its proc (only mount i know so far) and it sometimes bugges with your hitbox...

anyone else noticed this?

Since i got my whole informations about this here, i wanted to add my statistics. I got my mount yesterday, after the following amount of solves (number of solves when the mount "receipe" popped):

Draenei: 1
Fossil: 128
Night Elf: 159
Nerubian: 1
Orc: 2
Tol'Vir: 116
Troll: 44
Vrykul: 1

Makes a total of 461 solves overall.

As a side note, i got first the Ring, afterwards the Scarab thing and finally as 3rd Tol'Vir rare, this amazing mount.

EDIT: On 1/14/2013, after 2,844 archaeology solves (820 Tol'vir), I finally found the Scepter of Azj'Aqir.

What a relief.

I'm currently at 308 Tol'vir solves. It's getting really, really difficult to stay motivated to continue farming.

I have completed every single non-Tol'vir rare other than the Dwarf BoA staff (and I'm sure that's only because there's only one Dwarf digsite on the continent). I have found the Tol'vir Staff, Troll sword, Night Elf trinket, and Fossil shield, none of which I will ever use.

Seeing people saying they got this after 30-100 solves makes me want to cry. I still say 'RNG is RNG', but I understand why people QQ about it now.

The only thing keeping me going is the fact that I've sunk far to much time into this to get nothing in return. Every time I see another Engraved Scimitar Hilt que up, I die a little inside. RNG is fun.

Just a Side Note .. Ring > Pendant > Mount Theory is more or less wrong.

I'd be certain that the Ring and Pendant have a much Greater chance to spawn then Sword/Staff/Pet/Mount .. And those last four are all extremely rare. So the Ring popping up first and Pendant second is extremely highly likely ... And what you get third then boils completely down to RNG of the extremely rare.

I Personally got the Sword Third, and now am still going for the mount.

It's Depressing enough being on 227 Solves and still not having had it spawn. Then I see comments where people are at 300, or 380 or 500+ and they still don't have it ... Archy is so boring it's taken me like 1.25 years of doing it on and off just to get to 227 Solves... At least now I guess I got a Mission where I want a REALLY awesome Ground Mount for Mists Of Pandaria since we'll have to do 5 levels on it.

Just really really really hate RNG.. buuuuuut I guess there's not really a much better way they could've done it.

Got this on '4-1-12' (ironically April fools day) Im going to slap another dosage of RNG. First off total tol'vir solves: 183. The same pattern of rares often seen in post ring-->scarab pendant-->bug mount.

To those saying RNG is RNG and to those who are ok with this RNG grind...

No, its not fair.

RNG works in WoW because it is normally used in drops, there it works fine.

But this is diffferent, this is a profession you gather materials just like any other profession, and "craft" things with it. Archeology is the only profession where you can be at max level and be highly dedicated, without recieving any worthwhile or useful rewards. Sure there are some cool things here and there along the way but most of the cool stuff is EXTREMELY hard to get.

Its not fair or right when people with so little solves can get something that other who are much more dedicated, get nothing. Thats not proper use of RNG thats just plain torture imo.

A simple way to improve this would be to make it so that the more solves you have of a race the more likely you are to get the rares rather than commons. Simple as that.

Just got this mount. I have been very lucky with Archaeology. Got Nelf trinket when i had 40 nelf solves and then i got this.
Only 21 tolvir solves. Got Ring and that pendant before this mount.

17 rares so far but still not the one i actually care about.

Waiting for an Uldum site to pop up (sometimes taking an hour+)and then getting 5/5/5 from it is probably the most frustrating thing out of all professions.

Just popped for me on 4-15-2012. Currently working on solving it.

Scarab thing, Ring, Hand Pet, Mount was the order my Tol'vir rares went in. 110 tolvir solves total, mount will be number 111.

Just gonna say this was the only reason I picked up arch in the first place. Ive solved all the other rares minus 4 (both staffs, and both swords left) and I probably wont touch arch again until MoP just because of how much RNG is involved with it. Just terrible!

I have been farming this mount since 2-3 months:P anyway i share the stacking theory. Always leave 1 digsite from tol vir and solve the others. If you leave it there it has much higher chance to spawn a tol vir digsite again.( i know its totally random but maybe the digsites are spawn close to each other.) It is working for me. I was grinding Kalimdor archaeology when Cata came out for this mount, but quit Wow for a good year and half shortly after.

I'm now back on the scene and on the grind again, and just got lucky!

I have 35 Tol' vir completions.

Just completed 2 cat statue's in a row then it put me 3 dig spots in Uldum, after finishing the first It gave me the mount needing 150 artifacts :D

It then continued to give me about 6-7 Uldum dig spots in a row. Just luck? :)

I recently , after several months of not touching archaeology, decided to farm for this mount again. I didn't expect much and after the 3rd or 4th day of casually farming, when I least expected it to, this bad boy showed up for completion.

Just hang in there, when you least expect it will show up, promise!

Here are my theories, some of which are congruent with others'. I took the advice of someone, and left 1 Tol'vir digsite up all the time. (I picked the Cursed Landing Digsite, so I could still stick around areas where the Camel Figurine might pop). I did finished Nelf and Fossil Arch a few weeks ago. Seemed to be more spawn areas popping up. When I solved every area in Uldum, less sites seem to pop. Got my Crawling Claw also, around 94-ish solve, and got my Tank on my 130 solve. I also had the similar order of rares to others': Scarab Pendant, Ring, Pet, Mount. Still missing 2 staves, 2 swords, and the Alchemy recipe (even tho I'm an Alchemist). I'll agree that RNG is still a factor, but it seems that a pattern still exists to a small degree. Don't downgrade this please, just trying to help others. I would have kept going for this even if it took 500+ solves because I'm that persistent. Don't give up, you will get yours! Good luck to all :D!

i did !@#$loads of archy farming last 3 days started with level 250 or something got to 525 and with 29 artifacts i got this mount, cant believe how lucky i am. Good luck with farming this mount its worth it.

Just got it as my next project as 70th tol'vir solve.
Had all Nelf and Fossil rares, and got the Ring and Scarab Pendant before it.
Started grinding for it together with a friend, he also got the Ring first followed by the pendant, and as solve number 13 he got the mount.

Ring > Pendant > Mount seems a reasonable path to solve the rares, but at the end of the day it;s still RNG, Gl to people still grinding!

Got my last NE Rare @ 300. Last fossil rare @ 75. And have every rare from Tol'Vir including the Vial of Sands recipe (which I dropped profs for Herb/Alch TO get) except the mount (original reason I even picked Arch up.)

I have sold every single Hieroglyphic to the same person on my server. Probably over 100 of them by now, the first 1/3 for 500g and the rest for 400g. I did not think I would be digging this long to get the mount but am glad I did sell them, as I've made a LOT of money selling all them along w/ all the stupid vendor trash items.

Starting to get burnt out, and I've been working on this since March. -_-

Finally got this bad boy after 2 weeks of non stop grinding, what's sad is I still never ended up getting the Tyrande's Doll....that thing is a myth, nonethless, I am quite satisfied with the result.

Took me at least 76 Tol'Vir solves to get everything except the Sword.

ALSO to take note, they made archaeology easier from what I recovered, each site will allow you 6 digs instead of 3 now, which should make grinding less painful.

My best advice is hang in, keep the persistence up and it will show up when it's least expected.

Solved this last night during a 4 hour Arch binge -- my first rare Tol'vir solve, 14th Tol'vir solve overall. So, don't believe the myth of Tol'vir rare solve orders! It's all random, don't lose hope.

They did indeed buff the number of digs in a site from 3 to 6, so solves go by in a jiffy. I was lucky enough to have 3 digs in Uldum at once, with another that spawned after. I thought my luck had run out when I didn't see another Uldum spawn for a while, but it all came around again!

Not going to say for sure but I think the drop rate has changed due to previous comments post 5.04 and the fact that i got this after my first Tol'vir solve today. Or it is just one of those stupid lucky days that u get rare stuff considering I got this Redini dell'Orso Polare Bianco Pony Marino and Redini del Proto-Draco Senza Tempo today.

Finally got mine today as my 276th Tol'vir solve.

The first 210 were on my warrior who is my main, and the other 66 were on my mage who I leveled archaeology on to make the process faster (because of teleport). I got it on my mage's 66th solve. My warrior got the pendant, and ring within the first 10 solves, then got no more rare solves up to when I switched to the mage at 210.

It took forever and a day but I finally got it. If you set out to get this mount, be prepared to do 100-300 tol'vir solves+. It is possible to get it before 100 solves, but it is unlikely. There are always going to be people who get it within 10 solves, but remember that they are the exception, not the rule. I have heard of people who have 600+ sloves with no mount =/.

This mount is awesome and I am glad I did the work to get it, but just know that if you want it you are most likely going to have to spend countless hours farming it. With that said I wish you the best of luck, and if you choose to farm it, I hope it doesn't take you as long as it took me XD.

My theory is when the game decides that your next dig site is going to be a rare it randomly picks one of the rares, for example if my theory is correct if you haven't gotten any of the rares there is a 20% chance you'll get this when it procs, or if you are missing 2 more (1 being the scepter) then there is a 50% chance of you getting it when it procs

Hello fellow archaeology Professors!

May I say that archaeology is much, much more boring than camping rares (and I would know, I have them all).
May I also say that RNG is much, much more annoying the more you become acquainted with it (again, I would know).

However, I seem to have gotten a major luck streak today, receiving this elusive mount as my 45th Tol'vir artifact. My first Tol'vir rare was the Ring of the Boy Emperor and my second the Pendant of the Scarab Storm. Also, it just so happened that before RNG decided to pop this beauty up, I had 8 (yes, EIGHT) Tol'vir dig sites in a row! And, on my last artifact made with the many fragments from those 8 dig sites, the Scepter of Azj'aqir appeared! Yes, I got very, very lucky, and you'll all hate me for it now. I take my downrates with honor, for this mount is well worth it!

I do have some constructive information to add, however. I completed my last Night Elf artifact (Tyrande's Favorite Doll-my hundred-somethingith solve) shortly before Scepter of Azj'aqir popped up, and I must say that the Tol'vir dig site spawns increased dramatically after I did (even before the 8-dig site streak).

I would highly recommend that you farm this mount on one character so as to collect all the other races' rares and increase your Tol'vir spawns.

Got my mount today, after 68 solves (really lucky)

The fastest way to get solves done is by farming kalimdor until you have all the rares from the other race digsites in kalimdor. I had done all the rares except the troll sword, and at several times during the day I would have four digsites active in Uldum. This is by far the best way of farming for the mount, and I highly recommend it. Though it will be very frustrating to begin with until you are done with the biggest nuisance which is the damned night elf digsites.

I TRULY feel bad for people who haven't gotten it after 200-600+ solves, while people like me, who don't even grind of rit get it much, much sooner.

I got mine as my 15th solve and it took me a bit to realise the ABSOLUTELY GODDAMN EXTREME ammount of luck I had.

For those who are frustrated with trying to get an Uldum archaeology site to pop up, I highly recommend the method that I used. Do digsites in Pandaria, and crate your solves. Turn them into Brann Barbabronzea at the Seat of Knowledge in Vale of Eternal Blossoms for Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir. Repeat this over and over. It proved to be a whole lot faster than trying to get an Uldum dig to spawn, which I previously tried, and I had about 2 pop up out of about 40 that I did in Kalimdor.
I got my Scepter after only 22(!) Tol'vir solves, two of them being Anello dell'Imperatore Bambino and Pendente dello Sciame di Scarabei in that order. Keep trying!

The grind for this literally makes me want to gouge my eyes out, I've been farming archaelogy for the past 3 days straight and refuse to do anything else in game til' I get this mount. I've made well over 5k in just selling the junk items I have acquired. I've already solved the Pendant and the Ring in that order, and it's been well over 50 solves since I have seen a rare in Tol'vir at all. I really hope I don't end up being one of the people that take over 400 solves to attain this. ... Lack of sleep blah

Took about a week break away from archaeology, came back and did the suggestion someone mentioned of just farming Pandaria zones and turning in the Restored Artifacts for fragments and the Crawling Hand popped on my 98 solve, 3 down, 3 to go, hopefully the mounts next. :)

I have a new method for farming this mount that works for lvl 90 characters in 5.2

It relies on two objects both attained though archaeology and one requiring Lorewalkers rep (very easy to get)

1. Manufatto Restaurato made by solving MoP artefacts
2. the Localizzatore Sonico di Manufatti dei Mantid brought from lorewalkers vendor for one of the above items.

The concept is simple but again time consuming, upon acquiring the sonic loctator all dig sites in Pandaria become Mantid ones (from my experience these are all clustered in Dread Wastes and Townlong Steppes) and as such are closely grouped and easy to farm, each completed artefact can be made into a create which will net you 6-9 fragments and the chance of a corresponding token of your choice when traded in. (bonus 3 crates for a pristine item)

This means you can have a steady supply of fragments with out relying on dig site placement and long travel times.

(other items and npcs to reference Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir & Brann Barbabronzea)

Had 0 solves when I started hunting this 5 days ago. 5 - 8 hours a day and finally had it appear as my 233 solve today. Got 2 other rares early in the solves <50, then the hand pet somewhere around 100, then nothing. Made over 6k in trash items. Was really starting to get tired of RNG. Still wish Blizz would introduce a weighted RNG to at least slightly improve odds for people that put in the time to grind things.

Up to 330 solves, still no luck, for those who arent taking advantage of the sonic locator bug, go buy one from lorewalkers, the go to uldum, do all the arch zones you have, log out, log back in, be amazed. is infinite tol'vir zones, it's been this way since 5.2 and blizz is aware of it, but apparently in no hurry to fix it, I understand it is a bug caused by the CRZ's and the locator helps it along.while this has helped me get a TON of solves, and my crawling claw, and the boa staff, the ONE thing I want..no... NEED, still eludes me. :( back to grinding.

RNG for Tol'vir is horrible /bang head. Here is my story 138 Solves tolvir and still haven't seen my 3rd rare. I have completed many other rares on this toon figured it was string of bad luck. I decided to start tolvir on hunte today. He had only completed 4 rares total before digging tolvir sites. 3rd roll on hunter Scarabs pop this was similar to Dk. 17th roll on hunter Ring pops again similar to dk but here is where things didnt add up. Kept digging on dk figuring i would make his 3rd rare pop first to compare number at 138 rolls i got frustrated and said im going back to hunter. On Hunter his 34th roll he get his 3rd rare the staff. I dont know if its just random RNG or if the fact my dk has 23 Total Rares solved and my hunter only 4 but I started wondering if the total rares solved was factored into the chance on another to come up. Sadly after opening a ticket the gm couldn't confirm this said that info was only known by developers. Only reason I even asked because another thread on here stated a gm told him that it did matter. I call bs

For those concerned about whether the mount (or other rare you're after) actually exists, I would just like to say that I only got my mount at 750 Tol'Vir solves (Sonic Locator trick) and am currently on 1150 solves with no sword (all other rares complete).

Also took me 605 solves to get Zin'Rokh.

In other words, hang in there, it'll happen eventually :)

I just received this last night on my 256th Tol'vir solve. It was a long grind, but worth it. I actually can't even believe I'm typing this... I'm still kind of in shock.

Miscellaneous insights and pieces of information:

I got two rares within the first 30 Tol'vir solves, but then no rares for the next 225 Tol'vir solves (until the Scepter).
The initial two rares were the Ring and the Pendant. It seems to be a common theme among people with 50+ solves that these two will come first in some order. That's not guaranteed, but common.
I used the add-on called "Archy" which really helped (see below).
Out of superstition, I kept the other Tol'vir rares that I had solved in my bags at all times.
I used Tol'vir Heiroglyphs for faster solves, but I didn't purchase any (just used the ones I found).
To prevent yourself from going crazy, forget about the mount. Just set goals to reach certain numbers of solves. My initial goal was 50... then 100... then 150... then 200. I would do 25 Tol'vir solves per day, and that was that. I treated it like another daily (one that took a long time). I got to ~250 solves in about 10 days.
Figure out some sort of set-up where you can watch TV or Netflix while you farm. The fragment grind is mind-numbingly boring. I watched some Arrested Development and the NBA/NHL playoffs to pass the time.
I had two or three instances of complete hopelessness. After 200+ solves in a row without seeing a single rare, I debated opening up a ticket to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. If you get down, just take a break for a while.
Once the Scepter popped, the game had to get in one more parting shot on me: it gave me pretty much all 5s and 6s and no heiroglyphs for the last 150 fragments. I didn't care, though... my prize was in sight.

"Archy" add-on information:

It will show a distance meter that changes color (red, yellow, green) based on the distance from your last survey. This is helpful when judging how far to move.
The minimap will be marked automatically with previous fragment locations as you find them. The colors of the markers change based on your last survey. So after you survey, look to the minimap and find a marker of the color you need (in the right direction), then head there.
It is worth noting that I solved over 200 Tol'vir artifacts using the method of clicking the Archy UI solve shortcut. I got a little superstitious and wanted to change my luck, so I started using the regular WoW archaelogy UI to press "solve" instead of Archy. I got the scepter within 5 solves after that change.

Well, I finally got it on my 146th solve. Not nearly as many solves as some people have had, but as I've been doing this off and on since I hit 85 the day after Cataclysm launched, I can say that I'm still quite excited. I used the method with the Mantid Artifact Sonic Locator to fish for Tol'vir dig sites by zoning in and out of Uldum. Was it legit? Maybe not to some people, but considering players have stated that GM's confirmed that this was intended, I feel as though I didn't "cheat" necessarily. To each his own.

Just recieved mine this morning, it was my 417th Tol'vr artifact completed. Prior to getting it I had the following 4 Tol'vir epic artifacts crafted. Ring of the boy emperor, Pendant of the Scarab Storm, Mummified Monkey Paw, Scimitar of the Sirocco, then Scepter of Azj'Aqir - In that order. just as a note for anyone editing any possible drop rate percentages, I had recieved Scimitar of the Sirocco on my 102nd artifact completed, so I went from 102 - 417 without recieving anything else.

Got it as my 429th Tol'vir artifact, so it exists. Some advice:

Do not attempt this grind unless you're ready to spend several weeks exclusively on this.
You must be doing something else on background. Ideally on a second display or a tablet. Have that book you always wanted to read, or an anime series you always wanted to watch? Now's the time.
The rate of Tol'vir spawns seems to greatly increase once you're done with night elven rares. By the end, I had solved more Tol'vir artifacts than night elven ones.
Teleport to Uldum as soon as you unlock two digsites there, one if you have means of transportation other than the hearthstone.
Judging by statistics, the chance seems to be somewhere around 1% per artifact.
Don't purchase Tol'vir keystones. Far too expensive for the required amount of artifacts.

It took me 15 evenings and around 80 hours. I also got about 20k gold from selling junk.

Remember, as long as you have something else to do, it's only a matter of time.

Lets do some math!

Judging by the other comments the chance of your next artifact being the scepter is around .5% which is also .005. The chance of it being something else but the scepter is .995. So the probability of it being the scepter is 1-.995. So our little equation is: 1-(.995)^X where X= the number of times you have solved tol'vir artifacts. So for me X=118 therefore the probability of me having gotten the scepter is around 44%. At 150 solves the probability of you having gotten the scepter is roughly 50%. For the unlucky people, the probability that you have already gotten the scepter at 450 solves is 90%. Now, since you obviously haven't gotten the scepter you were in the bottom 10%. Just because the probability after 1000 times might be 99% doesn't change the fact that each individual time you solve an artifact there is a .5% chance that the scepter pops.

If my math is wrong please tell me so I can fix it. For those still surveying, good luck.

Recently returned to MOP after a few months of break and learned about the way that you can use the Mantid object from the Lorewalkers to effectively get infinite dig sites in Uldum. Since I wanted this mount badly for a long time but never had any luck getting it(had around 70 solves before this) I decided to use these last weeks before 5.4 to farm the mount and try my luck.

Spent the last 4 days farming the mount and reached close to 400 solves without ever seeing the mount. I told a friend of mine about the mantid device and 20 minutes after reaching Uldum he sends me a message linking the mount...In total he didn't even reach 20 solves...

Last week another friend links me the reins of the Onyxian drake after the 7th kill(I have 65 kills) and yet another one links me the Ashes of Al'ar after 2 months farming(i have around 60 Kael kills). To make things worse a guy from my guild randomly found Aeonaxx a few weeks ago(a mount which I had spent 56 days of camping to get).

I've been playing WOW since 2005 and have no tales of luck but I wish I could, even for 1 single time, to be that guy that randomly gets that mount that everyone is after with absolute luck ...

Edit 2: The next day, the same friend connected a reroll right as he left his raid and...found Poseidus, just like that. It's hard enough farming this mount and being at 500 solves and still keeping your hopes up, but having lucky friends that constantly find things while you are that miserable guy that has to work your butt off to get something makes everything seem harder and frustrating...

Okay...

Traditional Archy vs. MoP Archy... This is the question I have seen posed a few times. To *me* - the answer is pretty brainless. MoP wins hands down for obvious reasons - but I'll list them out below anyway:

Reasons to do Archy in Pandaria:

#1: The digsites in Uldum are about 3 times the size of the digsites in Pandaria. That means if you are doing the traditional digs - more than likely - you are running like Forrest Gump between points to do your digging, which sucks because there isn't anything else to really - besides run... In Pandaria - you can run from spot to spot in only a few seconds and be done with the digsite.

#2: The distance between digsites in Uldum vs. in Pandaria and what the space in between can do for you (or NOT do for you)...

----> In Uldum: as you fly from one digsite to another - (if you are lvl 90) - there isn't really anything to do. The herbs there are worthless on the market and barely even used anymore... You might look for the Camel Figurine - if the spawn points are in the area you are flying over or close to it - otherwise you are spending even MORE time going out of your way to check them before you get to the next digsite... Mining? Hardly. Rares? Not really... So there just isn't a whole lot going on there.

----> In Pandaria: Herbs are worth a lot and there is a ton everywhere. Mining - same thing. Rares? Lots - easy kills - make 20-30 gold per kill from the drops (it adds up) and obtain your Glorious ACH in the process... Better scenery, better ambient environment sounds and rain. Who doesn't like the soft fall of soothing rain?

#3: Crates vs. normal artifact finds.

----> Pandaria Crates: In Pandaria - as any Archy knows - once you find an artifact you can crate it up. They stack up pretty fast. You can use those stacks of crates to buy artifacts. So basically one crate will get you about 5-9 artifacts. But not only will it give you artifacts - but it might give you some keystones. BUT - it might ALSO give you some random item as well - like a "Digmaster's Earthblade" - which I got yesterday from a crate. This is a Brawlers quest item - opening up a new fighter for you. Trade in about 40 crates - you have a ton of artifacts. You can solve a bunch of "digs" - and if you don't get the mount - go back to digging in Pandaria - build up the crates again and bam. Repeat.

----> Normal artifact from digs. Per dig you'll get what - 6 artifacts or something and maybe a keystone and nothing else? THEN - you have to run or fly to the next one, repeat for a few artifacts, solve ONE (maybe two if you have a keystone). Time spent is horrid compared to what you can do with the crates...

#4: There are way more Archy achs in Pandaria then for Uldum. Plus - the storylines and historical info that are told from the digs in Pandaria are pretty awesome.

#5: The Mantid Artifact Sonar Locator: So you have this in your possession. Okay - yes there is the bug that enables you to get twice the digs in the old world from having it with you. Great - but that doesn't mean those digs will ALL be in Uldum. You still might have to fly back and forth however many times to get 2-3 digsites in Uldum using the zoneline randomizer effect... I tried it - sometimes it took me about 15 minutes to get 2-3. That 15 minutes I could have spent in Pandaria - doing everything mentioned above. If you're lucky enough to get a good set of digsites in Uldum - once you dig them all up - you'll have to do it again. It's not gonna be the same everytime so don't count on that to work like a charm for you...

Do what you want but the difference between using the MoP method and the traditional dig method are HUGE...

It's up to you.
Good luck digging for the mount - however you want to do it.

This is hands down the most infuriating mount I've EVER had the opportunity to grind in all my years of WoW!

Sure, RNG is RNG, but nothing is more disheartening than spending days/weeks/months (even years) going digsite to digsite either in search of Pandarian/Mogu artifacts to convert to Tol'Vir artifacts, or going old school and just digging until you get Tol'Vir digsites, only to be met with trash project after trash project after trash project.

I have now filled 5 full bags with stacks of trash from Tol'Vir solves and I'm not any closer to getting this mount than if I just started fresh today.
One great tip that has kept me, and many others going strong over the years, from going crazy is that there are No repeat Rares to solve!
This means that if you have successfully completed all of the Tol'Vir rates except for the mount scepter, then the only Rare solve you will get going forward is the mount.

This doesn't change the fact that it can be 1 solve, or in my case, over 500 solves, before your next solve goes from Trash to Rare!

Just remember, getting a Rare Tol'Vir solve that is not the Tol'Vir mount scepter, means you are making concrete progress towards the mount !

Don't give up all you crazy mount collectors! It will come when you least expect it!

Found the pet yesterday on my 181st Tol'vir solve (my 4th rare Tol'vir solve) and the mount today on my 196th Tol'vir solve (fifth rare Tol'vir solve). As somebody who's farmed and grinded over 200 mounts, I would easily rank this among the top five hardest (Alani, Rivendare, Sea Turtle, etc.).

There are 6 rare Tol'vir solves total, and once you find one it won't come up again. So don't despair if your first couple Tol'vir rares are like the sword/ring... you'll eventually get it. I farmed in Pandaria and bought crates of Tol'vir fragments at the Seat of Knowledge in Vale. Here are some tips to increase your efficiency with MoP Archaeology:

1.) Buy Pandaren Pottery fragments, Mogu Statue fragments, Mantid Amber fragments, and Tol'vir heiroglyph fragments from your auction house. I often found them for <100g apiece on my server's AH.

2.) Buy Restored Artifacts at the Harmony vendor in Shrine. Farm harmonies at your Sunsong Ranch each day for additional Restored Artifacts.

3.) Use the Magic Broom mount during Halloween. It's an instant cast mount, so you can move around digsites faster. Druids should be able to get the same instant-cast effect out of their Travel Form(?).

4.) Equip a set of Forager's Gloves for very fast gathering in Pandaria.

5.) Use a Scuttler's Shell (from Timeless Isle) to reduce your aggro radius (very helpful) and a Windfeather Plume to increase your mounted ground speed (moderately helpful).

6.) As an Engineer, use your Pandarian Wormhole Generator often. This thing is amazing for archaeology as it often ports you to the fringes of Townlong/Dread Wastes where there are many digsites. Then if you find yourself in the middle of no where, use your hearth. Ideally, there will be at least two digsites clumped up in one general direction/area of Pandaria. Head that way and see where the digsites take you, then port/hearth on cooldown when you run out of local options.

7.) Use Lorewalker's Map/Lorewalker's Lodestone sparingly. I might keep one just in case, but remember that you burn an Artifact to buy these. I might use a Lorewalker's Map if my hearth/Wormhole Generator were on cooldown and the four digsites were spread out across Pandaria... I might use a Lodestone when there are two clusters of two digsites at opposite ends at Pandaria... Again, only if my other teleporters/hearth are on cooldown.

8.) Look for other opportunities while you fly across Pandaria. Check to see if warbringers are up. Kill a few rares. Mine a few ghost iron nodes. Check to see if a set of dailies you need for an achieve are up. Etc.

Guys, after a total of 230 solves i finally have it :) what i have to say is, don t quit. It "dropped" me by the famous sequence of ring - scarab - mount. Did only 50 solves in tol'vir what makes me fell pretty lucky since i saw comments of some people that are already in 200 solves just in tol'vir :| i have almost all other rares from night elfs and fossil ones... Did more then 100 solves in night elfs and have every rare, did almost 50 solves in fossil and have the mount and the two hatchlings (companions) and much more other stuff. I think that anyone who farms this, will end up having almost everything that archaeology can give to you. The best advice i think is "just keep diging". Be happy when you solve a rare artifact from tol'vir because it just means that your mount is closer and can be the next rare to be solved! I followed the advice of everytime i had a dig site in Uldum, i instantly went overthere to do it even if i had a dig site close to me and was in the oposite side of Kalimdor. Also, used my Tol'vir Hieroglyphic everytime i had it. Didn't bought anyone. Put some nice music and stay with some nice friends in skype, like i did :p and eventually this mount will be yours. The best of luck for all farmers! :)

EDIT: It took me about 3 days of farming to get it. But farmed more then 6/7 hours straight per day. Cheers everyone

I feel like a total jerk, but I just leveled Archaeology, and this was my fourth solve for Tol'vir. I think I just used up all my luck in one go of it...

Solving Pandaria digsites really makes it so much easier, though, because every solve can get you Tol'vir fragments. Still gotta get the pet! :)

what i did was got all sites up in uldum and kept them up, i did not do the sites there.
then i solved pandaria sites for the boxes u get from solves. after about 89 solves with Tol'vir, two of them being ring of the boy emperor and pendant of the scarab storm, i got the scepter of Azj'Aqir. My 3rd rare with them. good luck all.

Just to confirm: restored artifact works. I got my mount (215th mount) yesterday from restored artifacts turned into Tol'vir crates (decided to get all Archaeology achievements in Pandaria).
185th Tol'vir solve. I still miss the pet, but I still have to complete 10 achievements + the 2 pristine ones; so I have time to be lucky and get the pet.
Don't give it up, just dig in Pandaria :)

So when this (finally) procced for me, ~3 years later, I was excited and then unexcited just as fast. I had thought it was a mere Wand for my level 85 alts. I was sad and I went on with the rest of my day.

Then something made me decide to come here. Needless to say, I'm very excited.

I have never been this excited on wowhead before, not to this degree, not that feeling of "OMG Finally!" because that is usually in game.

But here I am, sitting, kind of, jumping from my chair, cheering. I'm so excited.

Things like this simply remind me of the insidiousness of RNG. I've been going after this mount on and off since archaeology was released. The achievements of Professor, and Diggerest are old news. With over 220 Tol'vir solves alone, I frown at the time I've put into obtaining this. But even so, I'm keeping on. The battle tanks are gorgeous mounts, and I most certainly want one.

Agreeing with a lot of other people - Mantid archaeology is by far the best way to get Tol'vir fragments. Yes, a digsite gets you one solve (roughly) and that only means 5-9 fragments for Tol'vir, but those add up and every single solve in Pandaria can go towards Tol'vir if you want it to. Also, Pristines give 3 and a keystone for that race, Pandaria keystones are 20 (Cata and lower races are only 12) making this that much better. I got to 160 solves the old way and this is much nicer. Smaller digsites closer together, and the Mantid locator means only 2 zones, instead of an entire continent.

Just passed the 200 solve mark myself, no sign. Have the ring, claw, and pendant. God I hope I don't get the sword AND staff before this, but with my luck I will.

EDIT: Got it as solve #226. Pandaria is by far the best way to go.

Just received the recipe for the Scepter on my 50th try. Definitely easier to complete the digs in Pandaria and turn in with Brann Bronzebeard. Keep it up you'll eventually get it!

i was doing archeology in mop and whenever i get close to 20 restored artifacts i exchange them for tol vir fragments, i solved 96 tol virs and the 97 was the mount.Before him i already had solved the following rares ring of the boy emperor,pendant of the scarab storm,mummified monkey paw,scimitar of the Sirocco.So thats almost every rare from tol vir except one in under 100 solves. I know i will be down voted because of my luck to get all thoose rares under 100 but i just wanted to show to others that you should not give up like most people did after reading so many comments 400+ solves still no mount.

Some thoughts after farming this for a weekend:

I got every fossil artifact in 33 solves, so that was a nice bonus, and I got every night elf artifact except for Tyrande's trinket, currently on about 160 NE solves. In the same time span I achieved 60 Tol'vir solves. I got 3 tol'vir rares out of those, in the order of scarab summon thingy -> ring -> staff.

After that I moved to Pandaria because the traveling time between dig-sites in Kalimdor is brutal. It was really nice getting 3 or 4 digsites up in Uldum at the same time and have then re-pop in the zone too. That is obviously the fastest way to farm artifacts BUT as you can't rely on it I feel like Pandaria is the better choice.

Listen to audio books when you farm this! Archaeology doesn't required any cognitive engagement so it's a great combination. I've gone through quite a few hours of books I've been putting off listening to / reading so it's a nice bonus.

Listening to a book about evolution when farming this and I hear "anything that isn't impossible, becomes probable with enough time" so don't give up friends, I know I won't!

After 442 solves I got tired of being disappointed every time I did a solve so I spent 3 straight days farming panda archaeology. Gathered 400 crated artifacts to turn into tolvir. I also bought a bunch of tolvir hieroglyphs. Then of course the bug mount was my next solve and all that farming for 3 days was for nothing. Murphy's law is a &*!@# but at least I finally got it at 443 solves

Mostly stayed in Pandaria using the sonic locator then trading in crates for Tol'vir artifacts. It may seem slow but you're guaranteed to get Tol'vir artifacts as well as the hieroglyphs. Stay committed, it will eventually come to you. Good luck!

Been farming this for ruffly 12 hours straight, too concentrated to sleep. I got motivated to continue after I received the Fossilized Raptor. After only 34 solves for Tol'vir, not trying to brag, I got the scepter. I went back and forth between Pandaria and Kalimdor during my grind. Once I received all of the rares from Pandaria, as well as a decent amount of achievements, I decided to head over to Kalimdor as I wanted to grind the Professor title at the same time. The flight might get a bit tedious, but overall I think it boosted my drive to keep going. It's not going to happen instantly, unless the RNG gods are on your side, so don't get discouraged. I feel like both methods, in the end, lead to the same number of fragments overall. The real decision is whether you want to grind achievements, with a lack of ulterior rewards, or go for the extra rewards, and denounce an excess amount of achievements. To all those after this mount, good luck, and don't let the grind keep you from your goals.

Me and two of my friends just got this one! 3 mounts in 2 days. Yesterday the first of us got it. He had a total of 26 completions of tol'vir items. and there includes the mount, the hand and 2 other epics. I got it second at 24 solves and i i got 2 otehr epics as well on those 24 solves. The last of us got it 1 hour after me. at around 80 solves of tol'vir!

Is it buffed or is it still really hard to get?

From my experience, it's faster to dig those endless night elf sites in Kalimdor, stack 3-4 tol'vir sites and move to Uldum, rather than doing pandaria solves and buying crates.

2. tactics

the main goal is to farm as much common artifacts as possible in short time. how to achieve it?

1. buy Mantid Artifact Hunter's Kit for Mantid Artifact Sonic Locator. that will make ur digsites anvitable only at 2 zones of pandaria
2. go to digzones
3. dig as many as possible mandit archeology fragments and turn them to common artefacts ]
4. when you got ~60 of common artifacts make a restored ones from them
5. go to guy who sells tol'vir crates and buy them, all the time between make a tolvir artifacts
6. if you got rares, keep them in bag so you wont get a 2nd ones
7. pray to RNGesus for mount
8. repeat 1-7.

for me personnaly it took about 60sloves to get this mount

It was my 4th To'vir rare.

I had to buy about 50 keystones
Due to horrible RNG on Tol'vir sites, I switched to Pandaria: Sonic Locator+HS in Klaxxi'vess+Daily farm for extra spirits of harmony.

Pandaria archaeology has a massive advantage — dig sites are TINY often you get a few finds just by standing in one place. And you get bonus fragments for finding pristine artefacts. Also there's much less flying around. If you get plots on Sra'Vess, just use a portal at Shado-pan garrison that you unlock from the dailies.

I went through the comments of this item and people who have gotten it in X number of solves on both here and the scepters armory page to establish a set of quantitative data for a rough average number of solves for this item.

Out of a sample size of 40 (While a small sample it is a sample nonetheless and may help give people a rough idea of a number to shoot for)

Average 171 solves (only counting tol'vir solves)
Range 3-567
According to a scatter plot graph I made to represent the data 26 out of the 40 took 200 solves or less which denotes to a 65% chance of getting under the ugly 200+ threshold. Of those a further 18 took 100 solves or less which connotes to a 45% chance of getting it in 100 solves or less.

I myself sit at 239 solves on my paladin and 31 on my death knight and still nowhere in sight for this thing.

Got the Ring, Pendent, and then this scepter/mount (along with a bunch of junk in between).
Quite a nice surprise as I didn't know it existed.
Now, about that Vial of the Sands recipe...

Finally got mine too !

To get from 0 in archeology to the mount I had to solve :

- 15 Dwarf artifacts (1 rare)
- 13 Fossil (1 rare)
- 12 Night Elf (2 rare)
- 85 Tol'Vir (3 rare)
- 18 Troll (1 rare)
- 402 Mantid (2 rare)
- 14 Pandaren (2 rare)
- 28 Mogu (2 rare)

For the Tol'Vir I got the rare drops in this order : Ring > Pendant > Mount

The way I think is the best is quite simple : get exalted with the Lorewalkers, buy the item that makes every dig site a Mantid one, and just dig dig dig. Mix it up with some world Pvp or anything else, you'll die bored otherwise.
For the last run I collected 75 restored artifacts and bought Tol'Vir artifacts at the Seat of Knowledge.
It took me exactly 5 days from the moment I started.

Honestly starting to believe this mount does not exist, 6 days of non-stop farming resulting in one rare and 7k gold in trash items which makes the total solve count 270 this thing has been avoiding me since i first laid eyes upon it sadly under another person... oh and yes i still dont have it.

Just found the plans for this or at least the item in the log. This will be my 290th Tol'Vir solve. The route I went was I farmed Mogu, Mantid, and Pandaren for the Restored Artifact to turn in for Tol'Vir fragments.

I wasn't aware of there being a higher chance for Tol'Vir dig sites if all of the Nightelf rares were solved. I was however able to control what I turned my restored artifacts in for and they seemed to have a high rate of dropping Tol'vir Hieroglyphic from the crates.

I would like to thank Netflix for making this all possible. I think i watched all of Buffy again to get this done.

Hey guys, I've been farming for this one for quite a while, and have first gotten the Scarab Pendant and then the ring. I'm wondering if there is a better strategy, other than farming out any dig sites that appear as soon as I can. (After going through Nelf and Fossil dig sites)
Also, I was wondering if there is a code for seeing how many artifacts in total that you've solved. All of the codes I have tried just showed me how many artifacts I had solved on that login. :/

Well it took almost 4 years and over 600 solves but i got the mount.

And just for giggles it gave me the vial of the sands on my very next solve.

All i can say to those of us that have been on this grind is don't give up, hang in there.

Least i gained a whole heap of knowledge during the grind, watched tonnes of documentary's on YouTube.

Just stick with Mantid Archaeology, getting restored artifacts is very fast especially if using the Forager's Gloves which decrease the time it takes to survey and collect the fragments. It might sound like an unnecessary little speed boost but the time adds up. RNG man...

Don't go the Mantid way, it's boring, you don't get any toys from it and it will make you quick the search for this mount.
Do it all the way in Kalimdor, you will get many toys and pets and even a mount (fossil) doing it there, keep going and it will show.
The digging for this mount will test your patient....

As of 6.0.2, this mount no longer slides after landing from a jump or fall while moving.
Considering the upcoming cash shop debut of the Razziatore Ghignante, I figured the new mount would have this fixed, but not the existing mounts using the silithid bones. This is my favorite mount and I'm glad this graphical bug was squashed in time for grounded adventures.

Funny thing, got the mount before any other rare item of the Tol'vir collection while farming for the 30 rare items achievement in Pandaria, through different zones, not just the Mantid's. I did spend a fair amount of hours on it and very rarely have any luck, but finally it hit me. To whom ever is still farming this, wish you luck. It'll be right around the corner!

Good luck to everyone else grinding for this, it's insane, and it's really really hard staying motivated at times. But, just think, eventually you will get it!

If you have some extra gold, go to the Auction House and buy all the Spirit of Harmony that you can afford, then go to Danky, he's the Spirit of Harmony vendor, and buy all the Restored Artifact you can get, with that, go to Brann Bronzebeard, he sells Crate of Archaeology Fragments, buy them, open them and start solving until you get your mount.

I had obtained the Vial of the Sands recipe back in 2011 (during Cataclysm) after grinding around 70 hours in Kalimdor. The grind was slightly slower than now because each dig site had only 4 objects before vanishing instead of 6. It had taken 34 Tol'vir solves.

Came back to play a week into WoD and wanted gold, so my goal at first was to try to complete a few more rares and sell the keystones. Grinded a bit more in Kalimdor. It was better than before, but still slow.

Tried the mantid method, and it was just perfect, and insanely fast. After 65 Tol'vir solves, the Scepter popped up. It seems to be lower than the average count so I would consider myself lucky. But it took just two days, and I got myself 10k gold out of selling keystones in the AH.

I will simply repeat the mantid method, just like I read in the other comments and that I followed strictly:
Go to Pandaria, grab pandaria flying skill. Buy the Mantid Artifact Hunter's Kit. It contains one item which makes all the dig sites be mantid, which are all cramped in two relatively small zones, and each dig site can be cleared in 1-2 minutes because their area is really small. The second item contained in the kit randomizes the dig sites, which will become mantid because of the first item. The first item disappears after 24 hours, which is a lot of time considering.

If you are low level (and by that I mean around 90), then it helps a lot if you talk to the pandas at Townlong Steppes 50.00, 72.00, because they will allow you to carry a companion around as long as you don't complete the quests they give out. This companion severely boosts your ability to get rid of the annoying mantids that you aggro while digging.

If you are level 100 most of the mantids will just ignore you unless you get on top of them. This saves a lot of time, too.
Mecha-blast Rockets save a pretty good chunk of time, too. You barely enter combat if any pesky mantid gets too close.

Got another two free days to farm (around 8 straight hours each) and managed to go from 65 to 115 Tol'vir solves. 116th was the Artiglio Strisciante, and now I think I'll do no more digging.

I noticed that it is very easy to get distracted. A good strategy that I used to keep focused was not pay attention to the number of mantid artifacts completed in each grind session. If I happened to count, and there were less than a certain amount, I would keep grinding. First I set this amount to 10, then 15, then 20, then 40, then 50, and at that point I was consistently getting at least 8 Tol'vir solves per session.

One of the few mounts i ever needed to farm were the scepter and after some months going one and off doing digs in pandaria i was losing hope to ever get it.
Then wod come and after a while i got 25 restored artifacts and after getting the professor titel today and i thought maybe i finally was going to get lucky and get scepter!
Then after months of farming one and off in pandaria i finally got it today this mount is a pain to get but it is worth every day of farming to get it and i hope everyone good luck getting this scepter mount.

I got this on my 65th Tol'vir solve today. This item is fairly easy to obtain if you have time or money. Theres two general methods that I used:

Buying Spirito dell'Armonia
Bought out all Spirito dell'Armonia below ~65g and Granulo dell'Armonia below ~6.5g. I took several hundred of those to Krystel at the outdoor area of Santuario delle Sette Stelle. I bought as many Manufatto Restaurato (Spirito dell'Armoniax3) as I could. I then took all my Manufatto Restaurato to Brann Barbabronzea and traded them for Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir. I then used all the Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir to get Frammento Archeologico Tol'vir and Geroglifico dei Tol'vir, which I obviously used to solve as many Tol'vir artifacts as I could.

Mantid Method
When I couldn't find any reasonably priced Spirito dell'Armonia on the AH I used what is called "The Mantid Method". It involves solving Mantid items in Pandaria and then trading them for Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir. I got exalted with Raminghi della Sapienza (about 2 hours of flying around from Neutral -> Exalted) and bought a Kit del Cacciatore di Manufatti dei Mantid which gives you Localizzatore Sonico di Manufatti dei Mantid. I used my Localizzatore Sonico di Manufatti dei Mantid and started doing all the Mantid archaeology stuff in Steppe di Tong Long and Distese del Terrore. When you solve the Mantid items you can convert them to Manufatto Restaurato and trade them for Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir, which like above gives you Frammento Archeologico Tol'vir and Geroglifico dei Tol'vir.

All in all I spent 52k on Spirito dell'Armoniax809 (~64g ea) and about two hours flying around doing the Mantid stuff and I got the item. If you have a lot of gold you could easily just visit the AH daily and buy the cheap items Spirito dell'Armonia and get it without casting Survey once.

This is driving me crazy...... 205 solves on one charcter ( 3 rares: pendant, ring and sword) but no f.... mount.
On other character got only ring and a lot of "common"
Tried all methods: mantid, motes, swearing, crying, begging... nothing worked :)
I mean I camped Voidtalon, Poundfist, Aeonax...... etc.... but this is really killing me.
Gratz to those who got the mount and did not went crazy :)

Some tips for farming this when using WoD arch.

Use Vivianne as a follower for Horde(or alliance equivalent) if you have her rank three. On demand portal to garrison can save you a lot of time.
Use the Spirit Lodge at level three, and set it to whichever zone is least convenient for you to get to. If you have Viv you can now get there with ease.
If you are an engineer use your wormhole generator. Just make sure you have a glider ready!
Use Mark of Supreme Doom from Kazzak, or any speed gear that you have. Not very essential but if you don't feel like mounting up all the time having a nice speed boost is great.
Buy up all of the keystones from your Auction House. Your garrisonville will cover the costs.
If you haven't picked up all of the relics of the outcasts treasures in Spires, do so. They net about 50 Arrakoa fragments each, and in full will net you 4 or 5 easy artifacts.
Don't overburden yourself. Set a goal for an amount of fragments/artifacts to collect in one day. But lets be real, there isn't anything else to do in this expansion anyways.

took me 19 raw hours to level archaeology, alchemy and lorewalkers reputation. and 29 tol`vir artifact solves to have this mount pop up. pretty lucky. but actually farming for the vial of the sands. I've tried a mix of farming kalimdor and Pandaria, i would definitely say pandaria is alot better using the mantid Artifact sonic locator.

Before you read this letter, forgive me that i'm not native english speaker.

I use pandaria mantis farming way.
Its strategy like this.

1. you can build up archeology proficiency until 600 in azeroth or kalimdore.
2. you must exalt steady reputaion of the lorewakers .
3. then you can buy items that enable only mantis popup site from npc at mogushan palace.
4. go mantis popup site
5. dig dig dig, gather as many mantis excavation items as you can.
6. exchange it to tol'vir box at mogushan palace.
7. if you didn't get scepter of azj'aqir
8. repeat 1-7

p.s 1. i got Scepter of Azj'Aqir after 287 solves (i know that i am lucky.)

Has anyone tried to get this after Legion update? I was farming this for years with no luck. After the recent Archeology update i started on the task on fresh character.*

I was farming Pandaria mantid fragments and turning those in for crates, seems way more fast than Kalimdor.

10th solve was ring, 21th was pendant and 32th was Ahn'Qiraj mount.

I would like to hear if someone else has had the same findings after Legion update.

Well, after starting the Tol'vir Archaeology farm back in Cataclysm just for this mount, I have finally solved it. I did however take a break during MoP. Overall I had 300 solves on my main character, a druid. I had 4 rares solved to that point not including the scepter or the sword.

Being disappointed in a rare not spawning in about 100 solves, I decided to try a different strategy. Hearing that some other people get the scepter in the first few solves or first couple of rares I leveled up archaeology on my rogue and solving Tol'vir artifacts once they became available. I got to about 50 solves and got 2 rares, of course not including the scepter.

Finally I leveled archaeology on a third character, starting from profession level 1 in Draenor, saving up restored artifact crates and again solving Tol'vir artifacts. I then got two rares and before I knew it, the scepter was next. Overall I had about 50 solves again on my third alt, so approximately 400 solves over three characters. I don't know if switching characters helped me in any way getting the mount or not, but it is a strategy to consider.

Probably the fastest way is to use the mantid sonic locator in Pandaria, use a druid, darkmoon firewater, and buy as many keystones as possible on the AH. To take your mind off the grind for the mount it helped to focus more on achievements like the seat of knowledge, Draenor curator, etc.

For the sake of your own sanity, DO NOT decide to farm this mount. You have been warned.

I finally decided to farm up this mount and the Vial of the Sands recipe. Starting from 0 archaeology, it took me about 40 hours to get these 2 items. That includes 5ish hours to get archaeology high enough to dig in pandaland, 2 hours to get the recipe, and a further 33 hours to get the mount. My sanity barely survived the ordeal.

(I also got the fossilized raptor, but the drop rate on that is comparatively very high.)

I used the mantid farming method, which takes a little while to get used to, but is exceptionally efficient once you get in a rhythm.

In total I solved 1031 mantid and mogu artifacts, all of which were turned in to Brann Bronzebeard. (I also got all the rares from these 2 races, but they are nothing to write home about.) These led to me solving 175 Tol'Vir artifacts, which include:

33x Castle of Sand
31x Engraved Scimitar Hilt
30x Tiny Oasis Mosaic
21x Sketch of a Desert Palace
20x Soapstone Scarab Necklace
19x Cat Statue with Emerald Eyes
17x Canopic Jars (=17x Mummified Organ)
1x Pendant of the Scarab Storm
1x Ring of the Boy Emperor
1x Scimitar of the Sirocco
1x Scepter of Azj'Aqir
1x Recipe: Vial of the Sands

The droprate of the Scepter appears to be around 1% (based on numerous reports). In comparison, the rate of the Fossilized Raptor appears to be 5%-10%. I cannot begin to estimate the recipe's droprate as (reportedly) only alchemists can get it.

This is your final warning: DO NOT begin the quest for this mount and/or recipe unless you WANT to take part in an endless, soulless, never-ending grind which may consume your very mind and being.

Your sanity just might thank you.

After digging around for a couple of hours, i pieced together this macro that will show your your Tol'vir solve count + an approximate percentage of the chance of you having obtained the mount at your current solve count (This is with a presumed proc rate of 0.5% for the Scettro di Azj'aqir).

A few tips for keeping your sanity intact and making the grind a bit more bearable (Some for the mantid method since that's what i am going with):

Set a daily goal instead of just going nuts on the grind, it'll make it more bearable in the long run (I do 75 Manufatto Restauratos a day)

Get 2 additional Manufatto Restaurato a day and save them for the next, getting 2 artifacts for a new mantid kit can be tedious

Corroborante di Lunacupa reduces your surveying time to 0.5 sec (worth it really!)

I use a combination of Archy, Archaeology Helper + GatherMate 2 (+GatherMate2_Data) and TomTom to make grinding as easy as possible, i highly recommend using these addons since it requires basically no configuration and it makes this nightmarish grind a little more comfortable

And now, after 127 more solves no other rare showed up, so I think I've got a way to go.^^

I'm using the mantis farming method and in between the digsites I'm looking for Esploratore da Guerra Zandalari and Araldo della Guerra Zandalari for the mounts, reputation etc.

After days of grinding with my mainchar and 456 solves I got NO more rares (no joke) except of the pendant and the ring - I was close to madness.
Out of despair I tried to farm the mount with another char and thats what I got

- 8th solve Anello dell'Imperatore Bambino
- 38th solve Artiglio Strisciante
- 67th solve Ricetta: Fiala delle Sabbie
- 97th solve Bastone di Ammunae
- 125th solve Scettro di Azj'aqir

I don't know what to say about this, but i think my mainchar was f***** doomed. Maybe it depends on the char ( haven't read about a similar case, or maybe I forgot).
Sorry for my english, I'm just happy to have this mount finally.

Edit: I kept all the rares in my bag, because superstition.^^

TLDR summary for Legion (7.3.2), all credit to those who posted before and actually found this stuff out.

Farm for it in Kalimdor, make full use of Org ports (or...wherever if you're Alliance), hearthstone and whatever else you can. Flightpaths are generally slower getting around than 310% speed flyer (and seriously, those prices...).

Rare solves for Night Elf and Fossils seem to lower chance of those sites spawning, even if you don't have ALL rare solves. I'm currently spawning Uldum digs about 50% of the time, and whilst I've all the Night Elf rares, I've not got all Fossil rares. NE digs are barely spawning at all, whilst Fossil are about the other 50%. QED: Number of rare solves completed for NE and Fossil incrementally affect the chance to spawn Tol'vir digs.

Cap your shard count for NE and Fossil to further increase chance for Tol'vir digs. You can literally dig up your finds in a NE/Fossil dig site, not loot the resulting item, survey again and move on. This will allow you to quickly clear NE and Fossil digs that do spawn, whilst keeping the fragments capped. I can't find any hard evidence that this works, but my experience is that it certainly does (may be RNG, would love to know other experiences).

It is possible using these methods to "push" the dig spawns down Kalimdor, and get all four in Uldum. Solving these can result in the next spawn also being Uldum, allowing you to quickly move through multiple Tol'vir digs quickly. At time of posting this, my best run was three sites at once in Uldum, each of which spawned another in Uldum, giving me a total of six straight Tol'vir dig sites before I had to leave and start "pushing" them down Kalimdor again.

Currently averaging a rare Tol'vir solve at an average of around 30-40 other solves. Four rare solves in and missing the Scepter, and the Scimitar. Every rare solve that pops for you has a random chance to be the Scepter, but based on reading and experience with other races (completed most rares for most races). it could literally be your first, or your last, but it does seem that you are far more likely to get ALL rare solves for any given race before you start getting duplicate rare solves. Hence, it should only be a matter of time, and every rare Tol'vir solve you complete increases the chance for the next one to be the Scepter, so it's not *entirely* dependant on RNG - you are unlikely to get two Crawling Claws before a Scepter, for example.

Update: Using the above method (again, an amalgamation of other user's ideas and data, all credit to them) it popped up as fifth rare solve, around 160 total Tol'vir solves in. A couple of dedicated days farming and you're good to go.

Welp...Just my luck. I have been trying for this mount on my main since Cataclysm, literally. I have had on and off streaks, sometimes farm for days, weeks, then take breaks when I feel like I'm going to snap. I have over 400 attempts, or maybe more, can't recall last I checked.

Couple of days ago I decided to grind up Archaeology on my alchemist to try my luck at the Vial of the Sands.

Mount pops up on my 8th solve.

I am just in in a weird state of mind. Happy that I got it, unhappy I wasted more than 7 years and it came down to complete RNG.

I bought about 75 mantid slivers from AH and a small handful of mogu version for when the sha's pop up to kill.
I was going to farm up until 100 solves and if I couldn't get the mount to pop I'd only work on it here and there.

This scepter popped on my 32nd Tol'vir solve!

I've probably got 12 solid hours in about a week.

so this is what i found to be the most painless (for me anyway) way to farm for it

addons used:
Archaeology Helper to make finding the artifacts easier (as of 8.0.1 the version from Curse/Twitch doesnt really work. i found this fix for it on a forum somewhere that seems to make it actually function https://pastebin.com/dd7E9UYz so credits to whoever fixed it. replace arh.lua inside \Interface\AddOns\Arh with the pastebin)
Gathermate2 isnt really required but makes guestimating where the artifacts are a little bit easier
Minimal Archaeology to make solving and keeping track of stuff a lot easier. automatically uses keystones, keeps track of fragments, solves, and places a waypoint to the nearest site
Tomtom for the Minimal Archaeology waypoint

so this is what my setup looked like: forgive the mess

the yellow box is Minimal Archaeology with the settings changed to just track the two relevant races, show max number of fragments and automatically use keystones. the red boxes are Archaeology Helper and Gathermate2. couple this with the MoP Mantid farming and its fairly quick and painless.

now i just have to wait for RNG to bless me..

Just got it on my 309th Tol'Vir solve. It was my 4th rare solve
Tips i can give you to follow my steps and not loose sanity in the process is to focus on other things - achievements.
I've done all archeology achievements in Pandaria, big chunk of WoD ones and as i am writting this i am 227/250 legion digsites completed for Groundbreaker title. If you set yourself multiple smaller goals like that with actually VISIBLE end (250 digsites is lot but, but you can track it and every single one completed brings you closer) this becomes much more bearable. Instead of beeing frustreted for just wasting your 50 Restored Artifact crates you are working towards something else as well.
Keep going guys, mount does exist indeed ^^

For those wondering: I spent around 30-40 hours in total, most of it in Kalimdor because I preferred the more relaxed grind (since you spend more time flying between zones), and given the small testing I did do in Pandaria I don't think it's too much worse than going in Pandaria. Sure, Pandaria will probably net you slightly more solves/hr, but the difference is not that big after you get all Night elf rares. I was averaging around 180 fragments/hr in Kalimdor, and the farming was a lot more relaxed than in Pandaria where you never have more than a max 1 minute break, whereas in Kalimdor you can expect at least a 5 min break every 30 minutes, which *IMO* is nice during long grinds like this one! But, if you like Pandaria, all the more power to you!

Got it yesterday as my 60th Tol'vir discovery (which means quite a few more overall dig sites all over Kalimdor). A tip I can offer for dedicated archaeologists is to do archaeology on a mage. The ability to teleport saves a lot of travel time.

After grinding for this for quite some time, I decided to test and compare the Kalimdor and Pandaria methods of grinding.

I am currently on 230 tol'vir solves (I received the vial of the sands recipe after 205 tol'vir solves and 30 canopic jar solves) and the Scepter of Azj'aqir still eludes me. I have seen some speculation that the spawn rate of digsites in uldum is dependent on how many of the other race rares you have solved, so for that sake I am stating that upon starting this experiment I had solved all 6 night elf rares, 5 fossil rares, 3 tol'vir rares (ring, pendant, pet, in order) and 2 troll rares.

All of the grinding I did was on a mage, utilizing darnassus/theramore portals for the Kalimdor grind. My hearthstone was set somewhere else entirely, and I did not use darkmoon firewater.

Note that the sample size is kind of small, but I figured that some numbers are better than the current numberless speculation in this comment section. Also note that you can definitely achieve more solves in an hour than what I did here, as I approached this grinding with a casual attitude and would sometimes stop to alt tab or go afk for a couple of minutes to make coffee.

So, for the numbers.

In Kalimdor, during 2.5 hours of grinding I managed to go through 28 digsites in Kalimdor. Out of these, 7 were tol'vir sites. Every tol'vir site equals 6 "digs", so in total I got 42 digs during 2.5 hours, or 16.8 digs per hour.

In Pandaria, during 2 hours of grinding I managed to complete 48 artifacts, corresponding to 48 crates. Each one of these crates equals one "dig", meaning that I got 24 "digs" per hour.

This means that, based on my rather limited testing, the Pandaria version is around 43 % faster than the Kalimdor one.

This difference would also probably be further accentuated in favor of Pandaria by the use of Darkmoon firewater (since the Pandaria method results in much more time spent surveying than the Kalimdor one) and by not using a mage with the ability to teleport.

Do with this information what you will. It might still be worth grinding Kalimdor if you are interested in other rares too (such as the fossilized raptor) or if Pandaria just @#$%ing bums you out after all of those hours spent grinding mantid sites.

That said, Pandaria does indeed seem to be the fastest method.

I thought I'd leave my story as when I was farming the Scarab Mount it was stories like this that helped me keep faith and keep going.

I started farming this in 2011 when Cataclysm first came out. In fact I became so obsessive with the search for it that I put off doing most of the end game content in favour of continuously farming for the mount. I guess I thought that if I concentrated on it I'd get it fairly soon and then could move on in the game.

After 6 months I quit the game as it became so frustrating. As soon as I logged in all I could do was farm for it. Nothing else seemed to be a worthwhile time investment because I'd put so much time into it already and didn't want to waste that time. This was the original farming method where you had to clear endless amounts of non relevant digsites to make the Tol'vir ones appear. By the end I had about 85 Tol'vir solves but to get that many I had to about 800 other solves. I had all the Tol'vir rares except the scepter.

I took a break and came back in 2014 for the end of Mists and start of WoD. What did I do? I discovered the Pandaren farming method and obsessively did that for another 6 months. I then went back into my obsessive state and quit WoW again as I was so frustrated over the lack of Scarab Mount. I felt my time had been stolen from me, I couldn't justify doing anything else in the game as that would acknowledge my wasted time so I just quit again.

I came back in October 2018 for the start of BFA. Once again I started the farm...but after 3 months I forced myself to do other content and I'm glad I did. 7 months later after much of a break I started up again. I was in a guild raiding by that point and had faction changed my main to raid. I then started faction changing my alts including the one I'd done archae on (I didnt do it on my main for some dumb reason - the char I did it on levelled from 85 to 113 solely on XP from archaeology).

I started the Pandaren farming method, now using the addon 'All The Things' as a useful tool to track specifically my Tol'Vir solves as its a pain to count them manually from the profession tab. I was at 142 Tol'Vir solves by now but that equalled over 1500 regular solves by that point. You get so little in return for a crate and a crate is equal to about 1.5 digsites.

Within 4 solves the impossible happened! The Scepter appeared. I couldn't quite believe it. It's 8 years since I started this crazy obsession and I'm nearly 40 whereas when I started I was in my early 30s. In that time I could have become an actual archaeologist! Some infos hopefully someone finds useful:
You get your first rare solve "guaranteed" in the first 10 solves you make (but most likely one of the not so rare "rare solves" like the ring
nonetheless this can be a way to try if you have many characters skilling in WoD is fast to the needed 600 skillpoints to buy the Tol'vir

Set yourself small goals to not go insane tryharding it
I first completed every rare solve of the races besides Tol'vir then done Bfa, Legion WoD -curators and side achivements
Lastly gone for the real grind in Pandaria started for going curator again 10/20 then tryed the Mantis farm i immagined woud be doing for weeks

After 150 caches i turned in saw a rare find pop up thought Sword or Staff for shure (had the other 3 already) and was happy to see the first progress in ages
You cant immagine how startled i was as i coud click it and more so after i saw the mount emmerge from it (it was already 7.00am...)

Hope everyone good luck dont overdo it just stay at it over the weeks / months / years and you will get this wonderful reminder of past WoW

I'm going to post after years of watching this thread. I've yet to get the mount. According to my metrics i'm over 780 solves for Tol'Vir, no scepter yet. I honestly started farming again just to get canopic jars and get the vial of the sands recipe on another server... but I'm so disheartened. For years I've been reading that most people are getting theirs around 150-250 solves max. Yet here I am 3x as many solves and nothing. I've started thinking I may have gotten it somewhere but never learned or something and it bugged out? Is that even possible? I've been doing this on and off since MoP, this is many years down the drain. I normally farm for around 2 weeks with over 8 hours a day before I quit each time, or at least I used to, now i've been farming around 3 days like that but I don't have the time I used to be able to dedicate to the game anymore.

Well, this was a grind although it took me two weeks roughly of very casual farming.

This consisted of a couple of hours per day (excluding raid nights) in the Mantid dig sites in Dread Wastes and Townlong Steppes. After a total of 155 Tol'vir solves I finally claimed this glorious mount for myself. I would not suggest farming in Kalimdor it is much more efficient farming using the MoP dig sites with the Mantid kit.

I ended up spending 15-20k gold to speed things up because I did eventually run out of Tol'vir Hieroglyphic so I just bought them on the AH on my realm.

I would say this mount is achievable by anyone who is willing to put in a bit of time and manage your expectations going into it because it can become very boring at times.

Still farming this little sucker but I'll share my experience with you.

Farming in Kalimdor only, I get roughly 7-8 Tol'vir solves per hour, which translate to about 49-56 Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir.
Assuming you get 7 fragments per Cassa di Frammenti Archeologici Tol'vir (actually 5-9) and you need 45 on average for 1 solve.

I haven't done the Mantid-Method for quite some time but I believe that I farmed way less than 50 crates per hour that way.
Further, I think the mehtod is obsolete with flying in Kul Tiras and Zandalar because you get 1 Manufatto Restaurato per solve for Drust/Zandalari as well and the distances aren't that far away from each other, in addition to more flightpoints and Fischietto del Maestro di Volo.

I think that Druids are the best class for farming in Kalimdor since they have access to the Emerald Dreamway via Portale dei Sogni with Feralas and Mount Hyjal portals on a 1 minute cooldown, cutting a huge amount of travel time.

Keep in mind though that farming in Kalimdor will only net you more solves per hour if you have most, if not all of the other rares from the Night Elves, Fossils, Trolls and Dwarves, because digsites are more likely to spawn in Uldum if you've got all of the other stuff already.

As a Druid:
Set your Pietra del Ritorno in Ramkahen, farm until a spot in Uldum pops up > hearth to Uldum and dig > teleport back to the Emerald Dreamway and keep farming until the next spot spawns in Uldum. If your Pietra del Ritorno is still on cooldown, use Pietra del Ritorno di Dalaran and travel to Orgrimmar/Stormwind > portal to Caverns of Time.

If you want to know how many Tol'vir solves you've got, use:

tl;dr: farming Tol'vir fragments in Kalimdor gets you more solves per hour if you've completed most/all of the other rares in Kalimdor

Another way to get the mount (with luck) would be to level Archaeology in Kul Tiras/Zandalar with a new toon.
To buy Tol'vir crates you need a skill level of 600 and it took me about ~4-5 hours from 1-600 and I had over 100 Manufatto Restaurato.
One rare within your first 10 solves is guaranteed - I actually had 2 (ring 6th and toy 10th)

I started farming this again today. Did it long ago too but never got it. Right now it's at 19 counted attempts. It's so much easier now when you can do it in Pandaria. Easy mobs and I had 7 Lorewalkers's Lodestones sitting around on my character. So far I've got 1 Umbrella of Chi-Ju, 1 Pendant of the Scarab Tome and 1 Mantid Skyreaver. I already have all the other Archeology mounts. I just need the blue bug. So now I'm farming and leveling (yes it's a good way) my druid. She started at level 50 am now 51, halfway to 52 XD. Will she be 60 before she gets a mount? She gets about 965 exp for every dig.

I got the mount on my 110th solve (my 4th rare Tol'vir). Some additional info:
After reading that going to the Dalaran vendor to sell crates got some people the mount soon after, I gave it a try, and my 7th solve was the mount.
I decided to compare the BfA method to the Mantid one: I got 28 crates per hour using the BfA method, compared to 41 crates using the Mantid method. I can say for sure the Mantid method is far superior.

I also got the recipe for Vial of the Sands on my 7th Canopic Jar.
My other Tol'vir rares were, in order: Pendant of the Scarab Storm, Ring of the Boy Emperor and Mummified Monkey Paw. I should note that the 1st two came quite fast, in the 1st 15 solves, and the 3rd came much later.

192 attempts here and 4/6 rares discovered for Tol' Vir, still no mount...

EDIT: It finally got it after 229 attempts, which is not nearly as many as some people here but still took a bit of work. I did not initially believe that opening crates in Dalaran or any specific location increases your chances, however i did find the mount approximately 20-25 attempts after i started doing it in Dalaran for fun, so im not sure what to think of it anymore. I would suggest, even with no supporting evidence or proof, to just do your solves in Dalaran, since it's easily reachable anyway with the Legion Hearthstone and you don't really loose anything in trying. It could however all simply be a coincidence, so take it with a grain of salt.

For those of you farming in 2021: The Scepter still exists. This is to send out some good vides to all that are working to join the Brotherhood of the Blue Bug.

I'm another another statistical point that got the mount in the 130 - 140 solves region. I started back in WoD and started again recently.

I did mostly Pandaria Mantid technique and watched Korean dramas on Netflix to pass the time. Sometimes just went to Kalimdor to try my luck but flying around is even more boring.

Here are my solves:

1. Around 10 solves: Ring of the Boy Emperor
2. About 40 solves: Pendant of the Scarab Storm
3. Then nothing for a long time but I saved up Canopic Jars (kept around 10 to open but not loot as it gets randomized every patch).
4. 120 solves - Open a Canopic Jar - Recipe: Vial of the Sands !
5. 130 solves - Scepter of Azj'Aqir !

I was super demoralised after 100 solves but then I read that the median point is after 200 solves so I told myself that it would be another few weeks more before I see it.

But was slapping myself and jumping around the room when I got the Scepter.

I got this today after my 178th Tol'vir solve. I found all 5 rares before finding the scepter.

I went about 80 dry until my 154th solve which was the Staff of Ammunae, shortly after the scepter appeared at 178 solves while I gave up going hard for it through mantid farming and was going for Seeker of Knowledge title.

Still no sign of a vial of sands recipe.

I just want to share my experience with some who may be discouraged, I am currently approaching 1200 attempts for this mount, I have finished every archaeology achievement in game, I even started a 2nd archaeology alt after passing the 1000th solve on my main, but to no avail, so don't lose hope, remember, you could always be me :)

I set out to get it 24th of March, according to my screenshots folder, so today it's exactly six months to the day.

I was using the Mantid method, farming for hours a day and switching to other content when I grew tired of it. I collected every rare except the scimitar and the Scepter quite fairly on and I experienced a massive rare drought for over 100 solves. I started dedicating less time to archeology and spent more and more time farming other mounts and collecting other cool cosmetic stuff. Eventually I stopped farming archeology at all - the hunt for Scepter was indefinitely put on hold along with 87 leftover restored artifact crates.

Today, on the 24th of September, I randomly looted Cubo Misterioso on one of your regularly scheduled tmog runs. The cube starts a cute short quest chain with a toy at the end, and the NPC advancing the questchain is none other than Dariness la Dotta, the Legion Archeology trainer. I figured I might as well get rid of the restored artifact crates in my inventory, so I traded them in for Tol'vir crates - and there it was, the Scepter of Azj'Aquir, just after a couple of solves.

I still don't have the sword or the Vial of the Sands recipe, and I am very comfortable with the prospect of never obtaining it.

Finally got it as my 75th Tol'vir solve.

I started off with the Mantid method for the first 65 solves and after reading a bunch of comments here I decided to go try my luck in Legion content. Farmed enough to get 9 solves done in Dalaran and right as I was about to give up for the day the Scepter popped up. Going to go finish my farm via Mantid again as I find it much quicker. Legion was a fun break but I kept having terrible luck with the 100-120 artifact solves which wasn't as efficient.

IMO: if you get sick of Pandaland, switch up the scenery. It was most likely 110% coincidence but it was enough of a mental break to be worth it.

So i am curious what determines a 'rare'? Or is it just a random solve that yields a rare? Do you need to use the hieroglyphs to increase that chance?

I have managed to complete Archaeology and have all 63/63 rare artifacts solved that are in the game. Honestly, this is not a farm that I can recommend to the sane-minded people out there. However, if you do want to collect all the solves, then do NOT do this farm without having something to watch/listen to. Got it today after 108 solves amongst two different characters. Mantid farming is by far the fastest but you need to be exalted with Lorewalkers (you can get exalted in less than an hour by flying around Pandaria). I'm really sick of archeology now. Bleh.

Finally got it after a good 243 attempts on a character I was using to level up primarily through archaeology, mantid farming. The leveling went reletiverly quick using this method (aka it got my toon from about level 40 to almost level 55 through just farming archy) which made the lack of luck somewhat less painful. In the end, I'm happy to be finally done with this grind.

Got it after 150 tries.

Here how it went:

I did it on my main, got ring, toy and pet in the first 30 solves and then went dry for 120 solves.
So the Scepter was my 4th rare.

I tried the Alt method which I briefly discovered by looking at hundred of comments and forums.
I leveled up my Alt with archaelogy, and got ring in first solve. I however went back to my main and kept trying since I also needed the archaelogy achievments.

Took approx. 30 hours of grind I believe.

I can highly recommend the alt method, because in your first like 30 solves you guaranteed to see one of the six rares.

This has got to be the worst mount grind in the world along with the fossil raptor. I go both the Kalimdor and Mantid route (Druids can do Kalimdor quite fast) and with a quick napkin math of all my solves would be somewhere in the vicinity of 37,000 fragments collected, say 10% coming from things like the Mantid Sliver, 7 average from digs and it comes to over 5000 individual digs where I find something, for a measly 111 Tol'vir solves only.

But even at 111 solves I would expect more than just 2 purple items, whoever thought of this system is a degenerate.

Finally got the mount after a year of grinding, i have unlocked other mount rares in arch this one by far was the worst to farm, not only can you not farm tovar effectively you need to farm other regions and turn in artifacts just to get a chance to solve tovar I unlocked all rares for it before the mount...it took me personally 1700+ solves

Got this bad boy today after 256 long attempts, I used the mantid farm. The best advice I can give you "IF YOU HAVE THE GOLD FOR IT" is to buy as many Mantid Amber Silver and Tol'vir Hieroglyphic as you can, however they are expensive, I spent like 2 million gold in total for all 256 attempts, but they will accelerate the rate of solves by double. (500 per Amber and 4k per Tol'vir on my server).

Second advice would be, if you have completed the questline of Isle of Thunder, you can place your hearthstone in the Violet Rise, this way if you had all spawns at the bottom of Dreadwaste and got new spawns in Townlong Steppes, you can just hearthstone and click the portal to Townlong Steppes, it will reduce ur flying time by a small but nice margin.

Third advice would be, if you had a Dwarf character, they have the BIS racial for archeology, Survey doesn't have a cooldown and Survey time is 0.5 seconds, and you won't need to farm Forager's gloves from Pandaria to accelerate surverying AND you will get always 1 extra fragment from any dig, on the larger scale you will get some free solves while being a Dwarf.

If you weren't lucky you will lose ur mind over this farm, if you are not committed and a collection lover I would advice to not start this farm. I almost gave up yesterday after farming 150 crates and not getting anything not even a rare solve. But out of nowhere the mount appeared on my first solve after gathering 140 crates today. Dumped the rest of crates on Raptor and got both Scepter and Raptor on the same day. Remember never give up, it will happen eventually, and keep urself entertained :)

I believe that the easiest way to go about this today, is to farm restored crates from different expansions, and then turn them in for tol'vir artifacts.
I spent a few days leveling 800-950 in zandalar and kul'tiras as horde. I received over 60 restored crates from solving and receiving pristine items that I then turned into the archaology room in the great seal for tol'vir pieces. I solved 3 rares from those crates alone. Sadly none of them have been the scepter yet.

Hello ,
decided to hunt down this mount after reading comments below .So ,i leveled archaeology on a dwarf alt for archaeology racial trait and being a shammy with his ghost form helped a lot. Mantid method it is , for a while i thought aszuna legion area was neat because the scrolls were quite cheap on ah compared to mantid ambers but skip it and work with mantid method its faster . Didnt buy any ambers from ah ,kept digging and popped up after 248 solves.It does exist.

Have been farming this on and off since 2016, last week i decided enough is enough i NEED this mount so i leveled archaeology on 2 new characters and went to work, my solve breakdown looks like this:

1st character (human dk) 113 tolvir solves, i got ring > scarab > pet
2nd character (tauren druid) 86 tolvir solves, i got ring > scarab > staff
3rd character (dwarf shaman) 46 tolvir solves, i got ring > scarab
4th character (night elf druid) 45 tolvir solves, i got ring > scarab > MOUNT

290 tol'vir solves in total

My tips for this, druid is best hands down, beats dwarf racial any day of the week because of flight form. Ideal movement speed while surveying is 130-140%, any more than this and you're gonna find yourself running past the "dig!" and have to backtrack because your movement speed was too high and you simply ran past it. (Surveying thousands of times makes this movement speed issue absolutely infuriating which makes it a big deal in my opinion). And since you're a druid with instant flying mount, getting a red or yellow survey you can just flight form for 1-2 seconds and be in green color already. Dont get baited into trying to reach 200% movement speed doing this.

From mid August (when Spirit of Eschero quest was up) till the 16th of September I managed to get all 3 of the archaeology mounts. Took a week to get Spirit of Eschero and Fossil Raptor. Rest of the time was for this one. About 3-4 days a week, farming till I had 25-30 crates to trade in for fragments plus an extra 2 crates so I can buy that Mantid box for faster farming in Panderia. Prolly took me 25-30 hours for the entire farm.

One of the dullest grinds ever, having a second monitor that's playing something is a must.

Traded in a ton of restored artifacts for Tol'vir fragments and then got the scepter in under 10 solves, extremely lucky. Good luck everyone.

295 Tol'vir solves per Rarity. I didn't start using that until this past year, so it's way more.

I did Pandaria sites, then traded for the boxes. I only need 1 more pristine artifact to have completed all the Pandaria archeology achievements. guhhh.

Hi, interested farmer,

I'll leave this summary here, so you don't have to spend as much time researching as I did.

1. Start with getting Exalted reputation with Lorewalkers from Pandaria, the reasons are multiple-fold
1.1. The reputation takes ONLY about 40m-1hr
1.1.1. You get the rep by flying from one scroll to another across Pandaria to get Revered, which will grant you achievements, upon which completion you get a quest item in post, which you
trade to Cho for additional reputation, putting you to Exalted
1.2. You can get Red Flying Disc mount from it as well
1.3. You'll be able to purchase Mantid Artifact Sonic Locator for 2 restored Artifacts
1.3.1. This item will make all your digs in Pandaria related to the Mantid faction
1.3.1.1. This faction has the smallest digsites so farming them is extremely quick
1.3.1.2. The faction MOSTLY needs only 50 fragments to solve, making the Restored Artifact farm much faster
1.3.2. This will enable you to quickly obtain restored artifacts, which you can then trade with the Archaeology vendors for different faction fragments, such as Tol'Vir
1.3.3. This is extremely useful because Tol'Vir faction is in Kalimdor, which has random digsites across all zones in Kalimdor - getting digsites in Uldum, which is related to Tol'Vir is thus very random and time consuming
2. Farm Mantid Solves and the Restored Artifacts, so you can trade them for Tol'Vir
3. You can buy Tol'vir Hieroglypic (items that require fewer fragments for a solve) in the AH - price varies based on server
4. GRIND
5. Cross your fingers

I did the Manthid method while I listened to an Investment class on my second monitor. I managed to do 60 crates in around 2 hours, which translated to somewhere between 6-7 Tolvir solves. I Could not believe my eyes when I got the Scepter at a measly 31 solves in total (according to rarity). keep the hopes up, you will get it!

Here and there I've done Archaeology for gold ever since I came back to WoW in Legion. I've probably obtained eight of the claws so far? That's how much Archaeology I've done, and just now, after all this time, I saw the scepter pop up as my next project. I had to come on here to look up what it even was because I had never seen it before, but after coming to this page I immediately remembered this was the mount I desperately wanted back in Legion but couldn't get lol.

It's wild that I'm just now getting it...

Also, am I the only one who sees no difference between Kalimdor and Pandaria farming for relics? I'll go for a full ten hours in both places and end up with nearly the exact same amount of tol'vir relics(and that was before dragon riding). I guess Pandaria does make it feel like you're getting more since all the digsites are close to one another and so compact as well. Personally, I prefer Kalimdor without dragon flying. It gives me quick breaks in between digsites so I can do other things.
