Don't get screwed at the Auction House - all materials can be purchased from vendors for just over a silver. My server AH sells runned copper rods for 11 Gold - don't be fooled!

This is the starting rod for all enchanters. It will need to be upgraded as you level up, with progressively higher level materials and metal rods. It functions like a blacksmith hammer or a skinning knife. As long as it's in your inventory, you never have to fool with it. You only need one, it's never used up, and should never ever be destroyed or trashed. I'm willing to bet it's also the hardest, most expensive thing to craft in the entire game, requiring materials from level one all the way to 80

It will become your closest companion, traveling along with you throughout your many adventures, riding in your tiny little backpack that refuses to get bigger. Along with your trusty hearthstone, the stack of holiday food you never remember to eat, and that random item with one charge left that you can't find the heart to use up. Damn sentimentality.

As of 5.0 this is now the highest level enchanting rod, required for enchants of all levels.

Thus, the following items are now obsolete.

Edit: As of live, these are no longer obtainable and the old blacksmithing crafted rods (e.g. Verga d'Oro, Verga d'Argento) have become gray vendor trash, with their recipes apparently removed.

Enchanters need a Runed Copper Rod in order to perform any enchanting or disenchanting function (other than creating a Runed Copper Rod from the required mats). So this will be your first enchantment. Enchantment vendors carry the copper rod (no limit, but you only need one), and the two required enchantment mats in limited quantities. FWIW, you will get a skill-up making this.

If you happen to have one of the older upgraded Runed <whatever> Rods, I'm sure you've figured out by now that they still function just fine. There are several poorly worded posts saying "rods are out of the game (except for copper)" or "Thus, the following items are now obsolete <list of old Runed Rods>" or some such. What they are trying to say is that you can no longer make the other Runed Rods, you can only make the Runed Copper Rod; nor are they needed, the Runed Copper Rod does it all. But if you happen to have one, it still "Can also serve as any lesser runed enchanting rod.", specifically as a Runed Copper Rod; there is no need to replace it.

The Coltellino Multiuso Definitivo degli Gnomi functions as a Runed Copper Rod (and many other things), and has no level requirement. If you train enchanting and have this item, you have no need to make a Runed Copper Rod; just start enchanting and disenchanting.

The Coltellino Multiuso Definitivo degli Gnomi also works, but it requires Draenor Engineering to make one for yourself.

The older Coltellino Multiuso degli Gnomi does not work, it lacks the Runed Copper Rod function.

I went to chant up a ring with my trusty Runed Elementium Rod and I couldn't believe my eyes. As much as I winced when making the upgraded rods, they always gave me a great sense of accomplishment. Now we come full circle. What a crafty little world we play in.

With patch 8.1.5, there'll be a new enchanting rod with special effects, replacing this worthless copper one. I hope Blizzard will add its new effects to the Runed Elementium Rod or have us make an exclusive new rod from it so that we can keep our bling and still save an inventory slot like those using copper rods.

If you are trying to level classic enchanting and can't find this, go to your enchanting menu and make sure you select classic enchanting and you will see the recipe to make this.
