This is confirmed as the new Globo Congelato equivalent. Drops from Heroics and only drops once per Heroic instance.

Well if they stay BOP i see BS having a nice lead in terms of gear and also a lot of competition due to the various price range each BS will put his orbs at.
Guild runs will be the best way to gather these till maybe next patch.
And i dont see the reason not to pass on all loot from HCs and get the orb for myself in return.The gear i ll craft will prolly be better than HCs!(?)

You're comparing apples and oranges. The surestrike goggles did need BOP Primal Nether to make, but they were for lvl 70s, who could get BoP Primal nether.

However when http://www.wowhead.com/item=42554 for lvl 72 players was added, the frozen orbs did not bind. If they had, they could only be made by lvl 80 engineers, who had much better helmets, and would never bother making the beastly things.

When we can get the orbs, there will be better helmets available for lvl 85 engineers. The Surestrike Goggles were among the best headpieces in the game.

After roughly 20 heroics, I have yet to see an end boss not drop a Chaos Orb.

I may be suffering from a small sample size, and simply been very lucky, but they appear to have a 100% drop chance as of 11 December 2010.

These orbs, while somewhat rare, are selling for far greater sums than is necessary. I am wearing 5 different epics, raiding a bit, and have done enough heroics to know that, while initially difficult to obtain, these are far from the rarity most crafters will say they are. I have witnessed probably 20+ orbs dropping, and I'd say that most of my guildmates are around similar numbers. We all pass if we cannot use them, which begs the question. In same-server groups, where do these orbs go? It seems likely that many crafting professions are hoarding these, acting like they're rarer than they really are, and driving prices sky-high. It is absolutely ridiculous to be asked to pay 4-7 THOUSAND gold for one of these.

Regardless of whether or not you're doing this, the fact remains that the prices on these remain highly inflated. I don't know why this keeps getting downrated, it is both useful and true information, regardless of if you do/don't like it.

Looks like the following change was just made via Hotfix:

A hotfix was applied about an hour ago that changes it so Chaos Orbs will only be available for Need rolls by characters with Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, and Engineering (minimum skill of 425 required). This fix may not appear until the next time realms are restarted, which is likely to be early tomorrow morning.

Rolling for this item has been fixed, only those who actually can use it can roll on it. According to the blue post, you'll need a minimum skill level of 425 in Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, or Engineering to even see this.

As of 12/24/10, was unable to trade in a full guild group with a guildy who had won this item. Both of us were the only ones able to "need" on this items using the bliz UI in the 5 man group. These are REALLY soul bound. Strange considering the ability to trade all other "soul bound" drop items from a dungeon/raid instance.

Not totally psyched over this for some reason of valid:

- This may lead to really heavy crafting fee to get a special items, only the crafter can get it, so he controls the market a lot more.

- Can be hard to get something crafted due crafter are shorts on this, instead of wotlk system there you could buy orbs and give crafter so crafting was always possible.

Very true that it was like this in TBC and it was not a great solution back then either, remember having to run people through heroics to let them get their nether sometimes i wanted a gear piece crafted.

Personally i could get help from guildies, others people may not.

In my mind this is merely another example of Blizz's new guild-centric play model. The fact is that membership in a guild now has distinct, measureable advantages versus independent play. In addition to groups looking for a tank or healer to run a heroic, they will now be forced to another level of complexity in group recruiting (i.e. LF LW with Agi Mail chest pattern for heroic runs, pst.) This makes it more likely for guild members to form full groups to ensure they get the orbs and therefore the crafted pieces for their members.

I personally think it's annoying, and liked the frozen orb model better. Blizz got rid of rolling on shards because enchanters got uppity back in BC and thought they should always get the void crystal, leading to massive whining and entitlement fights. At the end of the run, I did as much to help the group reach their goal as did the crafter. This is penalizing persons who take gathering professions or who have alc, insc, or JC. Flip side, they are rewarding professions that are historically less profitable on some servers, but granting a monopoly on anything so widely sought by your player base is a bad idea.

As a leatherworker, I'm glad of the crafters only need change. We didn't receive any new bags to craft this expansion, so for medium volume sales we're stuck with leg patches. Gives us some higher end profits to focus our efforts on to counter the loss of common sales.

I don't see how this can be right, Engineering goggles "Requires Level 81" and are BOP, but to get mats you need to be level 85. Either an oversight or engineers are getting screwed, think it's the latter. It'll probably get changed to BOE at some point in the future but until then this implementation is underwhelming.

When the orbs are no longer BoP, an alt or new character below level 85 will be able to craft them. Instead of having to later change the level requirement to 81 from 85, it's likely they made it 81 to eliminate a step in making them possible to craft before 85.

As a tailor, I'll just keep rolling need on these for now. I'll hold onto them until Blizz finally relent and give us worthwhile patterns to use them in or they become BoE in which case I'll either sell them or make dreamcloth with them. Pretty lame for us, at the moment, in my humble opinion. Oh well. Can't have it all, I guess.

Actually, I'll give them to my alts who probably won't get to do heroics for a while but would still benefit from these such as my engineer. The head piece is sweet as is the crossbow for my hunter. Pfft.

I can see why Blizz would do this, give a chance to some of the other professions to make gold. In all honesty though, it sucks. My biggest problem is this, I am a druid alchemist. I run the heroic, same as say a druid leather worker, so why, at the end of the heroic, does he get something he can now turn around and charge me 2k gold for? Then, much like the kid at Starbucks with a tip jar, expects me not only to purchase said orbs, but tip him for crafting my new ridiculous priced item?

OK, I have the same issue with this numerous other people do...the two toons I play on almost exclusively do not have any of the requisite crafting professions (mining/Jc'ing, and mining/Enchanting). However, WE don't have any way of basically making an extra <insert your servers going rate per orb> per gem/enchant. And don't tell me it's difficult to get the orbs...we go into the same instances, we do the same work (in theory, some of us more than others), we should have the same opportunity to roll on the orbs that are still required for pieces we may want. Or else, make the higher end JC'ing, Enchanting and Alchemy recipes require the orbs as well. Or, stop charing for the orbs.

Disclaimer: I can get gear made from guildies without having to pay for the orbs, but not everyone is in the same boat as I am.

There is NO reason for someone who hasn't got a crafting profession to have these.

There "is" a reason for those of us who don't have a profession to be able to at least trade/buy on AH these orbs. (I do agree we non-crafter types should not be able to roll on them)

but, I mostly get my crafted gear from guildies. I gather my own mats (from alts who do have certain professions) and send those mats to my main, who is only mining/JC. I can only gather up "most" of the mats for instance for a Dragonkiller Tunic, and then trade them to my guildy. But, that means he has to use "his" orbs, or we have to go do a guildies run, so as to ensure we will be the ones who get the orbs, and more succinctly only that one LW'er gets the orbs so that he can make my tunic.

that part of it, is stupid. I should be able to buy from AH, or via Trade, and gather all my own mats, and just say "Here GuildyXYZ, please make that Tunic".

And what item drops for Alchemists, Jewelcrafters, Inscripsionists, etc. that only they can pick up? Afterall that's only fair as although the whole party/raid has to kill for the drops, giving only certain professions a shot at an item for their profession would be rather selfish wouldn't it? Especially since only they would profit from the selling of the item they make. Or do those get the orbs then bow out on getting other drops?

Wow is this Blizzards way to upset all there good players - 6 Heroic dungeons later and still not won 1 chaos orb.
WTG bliz - expect all the changes you have made over the past six months have lost you at least half your players, People dont mind spending time to get achievements, but the game is losing appeal to alot quickly now.

Everyone that needs an orb should get one at the end of a run, if that is too cheap then just make items require more orbs, but you can run 10 - 100 - 1000 dungeons and not win an orb. Thats what makes it wrong.

Chaos Orbs = BoP = Love it.

Kudos to those of you who understand how nice it is that these are BoP for crafters with professions who can use them. I'm a gatherer... mining/herb. I can't use these orbs for picking up herbs or mining and therefore I don't need to ever roll on them. I love it that these are something that only the crafters can roll on and acquire. It's a good incentive to level up a bs, tailor, etc. If ya'll feel like you're going to be ripped off by having to pay for an orb, then ask a guildie to help you out.

If these were available via AH then it'd be too ridiculously easy for anyone (including gatherers like myself) to get them and use them to have items crafted and then be resold on the AH... At that point I could be making twice as much $ as someone who spent a ton of time working on leveling their prof.

Just my opinion, but gold is fairly easy to acquire now so I'm not sure how you can boohoo about paying for some orbs if it's for some gear you really want. Do some dailies, craft your own stuff to sell, etc. Seems to me anyone who wants to complain about this obviously hasn't been playing for long and just wants it all handed to them on a silver platter.

In case you were wondering, these do drop off the final bosses in the new Heroic Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman dungeons as well. I assume if a new type of orb is going to be introduced it won't be until the next Tier of gear releases.

Edit: It just doesn't make sense that they can't. The Motes/Primals/Eternals/Volatiles/etc. that are used for specific crafting professions can be put in the appropriate crafting and/or gathering bags, but all the Orb style mats cannot? I wonder what the reasoning behind this is?

Being the nice guy I am, I just roll greed on these on my Engineer hoping that others with professions with better use for these win them with need rolls, and I still keep getting more. I've got over 20 orbs now taking up space in my bags. I can't bring myself to throw them away since I still hold out hope they won't be soulbound at some point.

Or maybe required in some new profitable Engineer recipe.

Why wouldn't you just pass or make something with them to sell on the ah? You can still make money charging ridiculously low prices by doing this. You make gold, someone gets gear they've been wanting. To roll on them then throw them away later is pretty idiotic and inconsiderate of everyone.

As a player with several crafter characters I hate that these are BoP and that I have to run an instance to get them on each character that needs them to craft. It's just stupid - I thought the devs had learned this lesson. Guess not.

There are other, better ways to make rare or special items for crafters, if that's what they want to do. Adding more grind to a grind-fest system does NOT add to the fun of WoW.

Extremely unfair to PvP based players like me. Blizz forces you to run a heroic for these which is near impossible seeing how I am in full PvP gear. How the hell do they expect me to acquire these if I do not PvE?

They should have made these around 3500-4000 honor points or 1-2k conquest points for PvPers to obtain.

It`s already item,where all needs for it(on rolls),but when i went specialy to deadmines to get it,i wasn`t able to even roll for it,because i don`t have any of those proffesions...

Can some one tell me,what`s the point of making alt for proffesions,if u can`t even make items for your self? Now i`m stuck,because i can`t get that 265 ilvl dagger on my main toon - mage.And my alt is too ^noobish^ to get into hc.... So,what can i do now?

All this week,i worked hard on proffesions & jp points to get pve gear & i was happy,to see,that i can make a good dagger from bs to start doing first raids after one & half year of break from wow,but now i have another one trouble - damn main-hand weap !

I understand the BOP nature of these. But, I wish they weren't. I'm more of a do-it-myself kinda player and not being able to get my hands on these is a huge buzzkill for my leather-worker and BS. Not a big fan of dungeons or random heroics. I PVP mostly and I wish we could at least buy them with 3500 honor points or some decent amount of conquest points. True we can always ask people with orbs to craft things, but that makes our own professions reliant on others, which sucks lol.They've already put the respective vendors for other items (Maelstrom crystals for example), seems logical. At least then we would not HAVE to run heroics. But, I'm sure they will be BOE soon like frozen orbs. So until then, I'll keep'on truckin.

As someone who spend most of my cooperative play time raiding, I find the whole chaos orb situation very frustrating. We kill firelands bosses daily, and get living embers, but still have to do heroics to get orbs to craft. You should be able to get orbs as a result of doing raids, either as drops, or through purchase with justice points.

Every person that plays, plays in their own way and for their own reasons, so try to not be critical of me when I say:

I don't "do" instances, heroic or otherwise. The group I used to run dungeons with have all left and I'm not interested in finding a new group, ...so:

It is impossible for me to get any chaos orbs for my blacksmith, leatherworker, engineer, etc., even though they are all top level across the boards (all professions and 'hobbies'), and lvl 85 (of course).

I don't make stuff to sell in the AH, just for my own characters, so, ....for me.... the BoP policy for these ABSOLUTELY needed items has always sucked.

....Just my 2 cents..., from a self-imposed loner, waiting patiently for the Orbs to become BoE... :-)

It's too bad I got impatient with my tank sword and simply paid another blacksmith to use thier orbs. I'm not sure why, but I get this feeling of accomplishment when I can use weapons and/or armor that I made myself.

These are currently selling for a buy out of 350 - 600 gold on my server. Just grabbed a number for some patterns for my priest and spent just shy of 3k gold for them. May just turn around and resell them for 350 with a buy out of 400.

Now, since patch 4.3 Hour of Twilight, it no longer Binds on Pickup allowing players to craft epic cata gear without the need to even run heroic dungeons. Specially those engineering goggles.
Also impact on dreamcloth, as in many realms 5 4 chaos orbs will be cheaper than 30 airs and waters.

Editing: Dream of Destruction requires only 4 Chaos Orbs since 4.3 noticed after post, sorry

They are a valuable item to everyone now that they're unbound. There is no reason someone with a profession should have any precedence over someone who doesn't. That is imbalanced. I'm not always on my characters that have orb professions but I still want an equal shot at them. Luckily everyone can need on them now so it's not an issue. I think it's better to remove the need option altogether like they did for frozen orbs. That way it's greed or pass. No one gets any better chance to win it than anyone else.

As of 4.3 you can buy these off the AH. Initial prices where 1 for 60 to 1000 gold, but over the week I've seen them drop to a buy out price of 50 gold.
I just garbed 35 of them for black smiting last night and the most I spent was 54g for one.

Now I am not sure exactly what happened. I know that now they are no longer soulbound. That is fine I can live with that. I took a short break come back ran some instances and boom last boss like always a chaos orb drops. I thought great I need 4 more. Boy was I shocked when as a Blacksmith I can no longer need on chaos orbs. This has got to be a bug.

How is it that as a blacksmith a profession that NEEDS chaos orbs can no longer need and people who have no use for them has a chance to roll. Like I said i can live with the fact that anyone can greed on them but they should not have taken away my need roll for them as well.

Heroic Stonecore is a very quick clear if you're 90 and somewhat geared (ilevel 460~). You can ignore every boss (though, you may want to kill Slabhide for a chance at Redini del Draco di Pietra Vetrosa ) and go straight for Gran Sacerdotessa Azil. On the way to her you can also ignore most trash. I only had to clear every mob leading to Corborus and one trash pack before Ozruk that I accidently pulled. Then of course the non-elite cultists leading to the final boss.

Of course, I wasn't a stealth class so they'd have a much easier time accomplishing this speed run.

I think the only real use for these now is probably for tailors, who use them for the extra cloth procs. Currently, the dream cloth still makes the best jewel crafting bag in game, (that I know of).

Interesting dual goals to get Chaos Orbs, mainly for mount farmers:

Zul'Gurub (Jin'do) is your best option. Killing Mandokir (Raptor Razzashi Corazzato) and Kilnara (Pantera Zuliana) releases Jin'do. Most thrash is avoidable.
If your goal is mainly Orbs, the Stonecore does give you an additional chance on the Slabhide mount (Redini del Draco di Pietra Vetrosa). Mind that the mount is farmable on normal, so this is not per se practical for the mount farming itself.
The Stonecore option applies to the Vortex Pinnacle too, although Asaad is more apart from Altairus (Redini del Draco del Vento del Nord) than Slabhide is from Azil.
Running the Hour of Twilight chain in order is relatively quick: might be an idea to run through it if you're doing Dragon Soul (i.e Esperimento 12-B, Redini del Draco Fiammeggiante and Ancella della Protettrice della Vita).
Daakara (Zul'Aman) can be an option at least once on your alts, to get Sacca Cenciosa di Malastoffa while you're there and/or a timed run (Orso da Battaglia Amani).

Coincidentally, the remaining dungeons are all relatively slow to run through without additional (permanent) rewards.

The only consistent use for Chaos Orbs has been mentioned in the previous comment, Sogno della Distruzione will give tailors a steady supply of Dreamcloth, for crafts or bags. Making crafts can be profitable too but is very server dependant.

Just some up-to-date info for those looking for it, since most comments are years old now:

Chaos Orbs are a Cataclysm crafting reagent, mainly used these days by tailors to make Dreamcloth (since the craft doesn't have a cooldown unlike the other Dreamcloth crafts).
Dreamcloth can be useful to make Cataclysm transmog items, not available by other sources. It can also be used to make leg 'enchants' (spellthreads) for heirloom items.
Chaos Orbs' main drop source are from the last bosses of Cataclysm heroic dungeons. Since the dungeon is heroic you will only be able to loot one orb, per dungeon, per day, however if you have several alts you can get multiple orbs that way. Any character 90+ can solo them, but higher level will avoid trash aggro.
The fastest dungeon is definitely The Lost City of the Tol'vir followed by Zul'Gurub and End Time. The Stonecore and The Vortex Pinnacle are also reasonably fast and have the additional bonus of dropping a mount if you're interested in that.
If you have several characters above level 90 and you're after a few of these orbs, my advice is to do The Lost City of the Tol'vir followed by The Vortex Pinnacle on each of your characters. The two dungeons are close together and easy to get to via the Uldum portal in SW/Org. The time taken to clear both dungeons is about 8 minutes. Just make sure the dungeons are on heroic :P
