This is incorrect. This item doesn't "grant" arena points and is not given to players who need a refund. It's just used for the currency tab - hover over the Arena points icon in your currency tab and you'll see this item's tooltip.

The same thing exists for Honor Points.

On a side note, please don't post speculation as fact.

Arena points are awarded at the end of a wow week (Tuesday). If you do about ten rated games u will be awarded about 300 arena points

Patch 3.3 is updating right now. In the patch notes:

All 71-80 Battleground daily quests will now award 25 Arena points in addition to their current rewards.

Uh, yeah I did the BG daily last night (post-3.3), was awarded the 25 Arena Points, and today, they're not there ?
Does anyone have any ideas about that? Is that supposed to happen? I've never done Arena before, so I don't know anything about it.

Ok I am confused....currently it is 10:15EST on Jan 28th. The arena masters are not allowing rated arena fights, I am not on any arena team. I know my points were erased (I tried to buy pvp gear the Monday before the reset and then resell it back to the vendors) but I have 178 arena points. Now I know I have completed BG dailies but there is no way I could have got 178 points mathmatically.

HALP!

Incorrect. The number of rated games you play in a given week has nothing to do with how many arena points you will receive. However, in order to be eligible to receive any points for a given week you must participate in at least 10 rated games.

The amount of points you receive is based solely on your team's arena rating.
The formula is as follows; taken from wowarmory's Arena Calculator:

If RATING ≤ 1500 → POINTS = *
If RATING > 1500 → POINTS = -0.00412 x RATING ) ]

Penalties:
2v2 teams earn 76% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating.
3v3 teams earn 88% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating.

*As of S6 and later this formula is no longer accurate. Instead, all teams with a rating under 1500 are awarded points as though they had a rating of 1500. Which calculates to 344 Arena Points for a 5v5 team.

No, you lose your arena points once you level at L71. Also, skirmishes don't affect rating thus they don't contribute to earning arena points.

However, if your team has played 10 rated games and, if your toon has played 30% of the rated games, then you will earn arena points as if your team were 1500 rated - regardless of how many skirmishes you queue for afterward.

Arena points are not honor points. You dont gain them per HK. You can't 'grind' them like honor kills in bg. What happens is you bring your team to fight a rated match. The arena system tries to pair you with teams of similar rating. Rating works very much like the ELO rating system in Professional Chess. The break point is 1500. You gain rating by defeating other teams, you lose rating by losing to other teams. At the end of the week, your team rating is cross referenced with the arena points awarded for that rating - and then your team (and the members who fought in at least 30% of the rated matches) earn their arena points, to be spent after every weekly maintenance on Tuesday. If your team is below 1500 rating, you will earn as if they were 1500. If above, then they will earn based on this awful formula.

AP = (1511.26/(1+1639.28*2.71828^(-0.00412*{team rating}))) <- go ahead and bung this into MS Excel. Just replace team rating with a cell reference.
Don't forget to penalize by team size. 100%, 88%, 76% etc.

This result is further modified by a team size penalty. For 5v5 you earn at 100%, 3v3 at 88% and 2v2 at 76%. So join a 2s team, lose every fight youve ever been in (heck fight nekkid even) and earn 261 points per week. Add 175 for random or holidy dailie bgs = 436 per week or approx 56% of a major piece of relentless gear (head pants chest). Which is approx 8 weeks of sucking large for a full set of relentless mains. If you actually have some skill at arena and manage to breach 1500, then you will earn at a faster rate (ie, 66% of a piece at 1600 hundred rating**). However, good luck getting over 1500 without full relentless gear. You might be capable if outfitted in i264 PVE depending on class/spec. Meaning, dont beat yourself up if it takes a while to not be pwn bait. It could easily take 2 months.

**1600 yields 358 from arena matches at 2v2; add 175 from dailie randome bgs (static) = 533 AP vs 436 for any rating below 1500.

Also, note: you can buy furious main sets with marks of triumph now. Its not a bad way to get geared and then grind rating.

For PvP, Arena Points are more powerfull that Emblems of Frost, as you can exchange the Points for Wrathful Gladiator's Gear, which is better than Relentless Gladiator's, obtained by Emblems of Frost. Of course, Wrathful Gladiator's Gear needs more than Arena Points to be obtained. You need: 1) Arena Points (obtained by Arena Combat), 2) Honor Points (obtained by every PvP Combat, versus the opposing faction players), and (Personal/Team) Rating (obtained by successful Arena Combat). As we can see, it's more than hard to get Wrathful Gladiator's Gear, especially the Weapons, Off-Hand Weapons, and 3rd Item Slots, such as Relics (Librams, Idols, Vigils) and Ranged Weapons (Wands, Bows, Crossbows, Guns).
