Nerubians are intelligent, hence you are skinning intelligent beings :P, I understand worgen and yeti since they are barely intelligent, but Nerubians are supposely one of the smartest races in Warcraft.

Why don't they just let us skin Tauren or Night Elves, it would be the same as skinning the Nerubians. And my dwarf always wanted a tauren's head for a hat. And my orc would very well like a stuffed gnome to play gnomeball with.

These also can be skinned from Scourged Flamespitters near Valiance Keep. Great way to get them right now that people are doing the beginning quests and this mob is needed for one of the first quests in that area.

Since I didn't care for the crowds doing the low level quests in WotLk, I went exploring. Found a nice little outpost in Ice Crown where I could dot the mobs(sometimes it took a few tries to get a successful hit), and the guards would finish them off before I looted and skinned them. Picked up 37 Nerubian Chitin, 120 leather, and 6 Arctic furs in about 2 hours. With a little practice this rate could probably be doubled.

I love theese, I farm them for about 1 stack / hour and sell for 350 gold, along with all the Borean Leathers that I get 10-15 stacks / hour, and sell for 25 gold / stack :)
Sometimes I get lucky and find an Arctic Fur or two too ;)

Run the two instances in dragonblight, the one's with the undead spiders. I ran both of tem tonight and got a full stack. Just make sure no one else is a skinner.

A reliable spot to farm these is around Kolramas, from the small skitterers. Not the best droprate, but I haven't found a better spot so far.

A good place for skinner to get Nerubian Chitin is Scourgeholme, in IceCrown.

U can alse kill the others mobs in order to get some Frostweave Cloth.

Incredibly low drop rate from the mobs around Warsong Hold. Probably less than 2% so not worth hanging around there to skin despite the loads of corpses lying around.

I have found that by far the best place to farm for these is the Forgotten Depths Slayer's and the Forgotten Depths Ambusher's they are found around the south-east most part of Icecrown in the area of 85-74 near the argent vanguard.

They may, however, only be available before and during the quest(s) that involve them, I only say this because I farmed them for a while whilst questing in that area but cannot seem to find them now that i have completed the quest(s) any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated!

I've found that obviously, a good spot is Azjol Nerub, and since the xpac, they've upped the drop rate of Nerubian Chitins. If you're level 80, a good place to go is around Warsong Hold. I just pull 6-8 at a time, and volley away. The best thing is that people are always questing there, and you can skin their kills as well. In about 45 minutes I got 25 chitins, and a decent amount of leather.

I farmed 20 for http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=60647... It took about an hour and a half, at Icecrown north of Argent Vanguard. It's great there because you never have to wait for spawns, you are always killing stuff! I also made 10 heavy borean leather, and 1 borean leather... I was an 80 BM hunter with a gorilla, that helped me a lot. Make sure you check inside the buildings, the one building in the north, has 2 guards and 4 guys inside, all give leather. Make sure you check in there!

The drop rates on this item aren't entirely accurate. I was just wandering around doing quests in Zul'Drak, skinning all of the Hath'ar Skimmers that I had killed, and got 12 of these Nerubian Chitins. I probably only killed about 50 of these mobs. Sometimes I would get a couple in a row, sometimes I wouldn't get one for a while, but the drop rate on these isn't too bad.

Very easy to farm the first two mobs in Azjol-nerub on normal difficulty (at least for me as a BM hunter).
Always get 1 chitin from the two, sometimes they drop two, but you can easily get 5-10 in an hour for very little work, and they give 3.4k xp at 77.

An amazing place to farm Nerubian Chitin would definitely have to be right outside the Argent Vanguard. Make sure you don't complete many quests and make the same mistake I did. If you complete a certain quest (Can't remember which one it is), the area will change (Damn you phasing!) and all the spiders will disappear. I made this mistake on my main and regretted losing such a great farming spot. So, when I was leveling my hunter, I rushed over to Argent Vanguard when I was halfway to 77. I did nothing but kill the spiders near the vanguard from 76.5-77. After seeing how much money I made grinding there, I'm definitely going to stay there until 80. Here's the drops I got, from half a level, along with the average price on my server:

430 Borean Leather - 215g
2 Arctic Fur - 80g
68 Nerubian Chitin - 204g
121 Frostweave Cloth - 60g
25 Infinite Dust (From disenchanting greens) - 125g
73g in pure cash (These mobs act like humanoids, in which they drop money and cloth)
87g in vendor trash (They drop ALOT of gray items)

The 73g in pure cash is also subtracting the cost of bullets and repairs, so they dropped even more money than that. They also dropped a lot of food/water/potions which I didn't include. Anyways, it comes out to a grand total of 844g. Not bad for a couple of hours of farming (I was only level 76, with a level 72 pet , so an 80 could probably have farmed 1.5 times as much as me in the same amount of time).

The best strategy I found is to run around attacking whichever ones you see. If one of the spiders is getting attacked by one of the guards, put a DoT on it. As long as you do at least 1 damage, the kill will be yours and you can loot/skin the mob. Also, if there are no spiders in sight, break the webbings. There's about a 30% chance there will be a spider inside. Just make sure you're not right next to it when you break it, as it'll explode and launch you backwards.

Edit: One thing I forgot to add. There's an extra reason to break the webbings. Apparently (This never happened to me at 76, but happens now at 77), the crusaders inside give you a buff and heal you. I get a 30 min Blessing of Might that adds 350 AP and they usually heal me for about 5k or so. So definitely break open those webs. You'll either get another spider to kill, or a nice buff/heal. It's a win-win situation.

I find it strange that you can skin the Gundrak raptors. They're about the only beast that doesn't drop meat in Northrend. But they do give chitins, and they're easy to kill. They have a fairly decent drop rate. I just wish there were more of them, or more beasts that could produce nerubian chitins when skinned.

For nerubian chitin I like to farm at Argent Vanguard area. Pre-quest completion.

NOTE: If you have completed the quests there, the mob's will NOT be available.

1. The mobs have a fast spawn time.
2. Argent NPCs in the area will assist in killing attackers.
3. Cocooned NPC's can open a paladin who will buff and heal you, or yield another enemy to fight.
4. Good farming spot for arctic fur.
5. Good farming spot for borean leather.
6. Good farming spot for Frostweave. Especially if you are a tailor.

For lower level people who need these things, kill the nerubians east of the Westwind Refugee Camp (Anub'ar Ambushers) in Dragonblight. I found that they have around a 30% drop rate. The Anub'ar Dreadweavers in this area also drop them. =)

can confirm that Kolramas is the best spot to farm these from the skimmers there. about a 30% drop rate as well, however i have skinned 5 chitins in a row from this spot. very lucky. on average i get 1 out of 3 or 4 skimmer spiders which isn't bad at all. in 45 minutes i farmed 27 chitins, the rest borean leather and got 1 arctic fur. not bad at all.

Best place i have found so far is Kolramas in Zul Drak.

After 30 min of farming, i ended up with:

4 green items
30 drakkari offerings
about 19g vendor trash

I tried farming in Kolramas as most of you guys suggested, but I got unlucky, the drop rate was pretty low - only managed to get 15 chitins in an hour. However, I found another great place: Icemist Village in Dragonblight. The nerubians that overrun the small village drop the chitin as well. As they are only lvl 69-71, they are easy to kill, and drop rate for me was about 1 chitin in every 5-6 kills. In 45 minutes of farming, I got
- 40(!) nerubian chitin
- 3 arctic fur
- 5 green items (lvl 68-73)
- a few golds' worth of vendor trash
- about 35 borean leather (the mobs actually drop leather scraps only, but I combined them as frequently as I could)

I have tried Icemist Village too. After 30 min, i ended up with:

No one has posted anything about the chitin since Cata. The Hatah'ar Skimmers as well as the larger spiders, the Hath'ar Necromagus, were both dropping the chitin (after being skinned) at a pretty good rate around Kolramas. I got 18 in half an hour and an artic fur.

BUT WATCH OUT-the spiders in the area are mostly lvl 75 and I was caught off guard when I ran into an 80 elite Plague Sprayer spider. Fortunately for me I'm a lvl 85 but there would be an obvious problem for lower levels.

Well as far as i am concerned after farming Kolramas for over two hours i was not impressed.
However, I went to valley of echoes (pre quests) and after an hour of farming :

7 stacks borean leather
35 nerubian chitin
1 arctic fur
3 greens for disenchanting
and 22 gold worth of grey items

i'd say valley of echoes was the way to go.

The Argent Vanguard is a great place. You can do most of the quests... just don't do the quest where you talk to the gnome in the ammunitions hut and then use the cannons for the big battle.

The Sfregiatore di Ahn'kahar (and their siblings) have the highest drop rate, will chase you forever (i.e. group together in large numbers fairly easily), are all near the dungeon entrance, can be skinned for 2 chitins, and otherwise can be skinned for 2 Borean Leather. Plus, I believe you can now reset all instances 10 times (up from 5), so I think it is now possible to collect 35 chitin within an hour. However, the Scagliamagie di Ahn'kahar still pack a punch (even at 90) and can cast while out of sight (around corners). Plus the movement impairing abilities are slightly annoying. Still, I think farming this dungeon is much faster than all the other locations.

If you have done the Argent Dawn questline in Icecrown a good place to farm these is in Ahn'Kahet. There are a few large packs there with a good droprate.

In ICC, there are 8 Nerub'ar Broodkeeper's before Lord Marrowgar. I ran it 10 times in 25-30 min (I'm sure it could be faster, especially if you can see the traps and not get slowed) and received: 31 Nerubian Chitin, 134 Borean Leather and 155 Frostweave.

As of 8.0 pre-patch:

Location: The Argent Vanguard, Icecrown
Time Spent: 10 minutes
Results: 24 leather and 2 chitin
Notes: Very slow farm and low drop rate for chitin. The spiders and nerubians are very spread out in the field, requiring you to mount up inbetween every kill basically. The ones that come up to the walls are not a rolling wave, just one or two every 30 seconds or so.

Location: Kolramas, Zul'Drak
Time Spent: 10 minutes
Results: 52 leather and 20 chitin
Notes: Much better location than Icecrown in my opinion. Good drop rate for chitin. Most of the Hath'ar mobs are within walking distance and a few can be pulled together. Respawn rate is ok; did circles around the compound and they would be up again once you did a lap. There might be people questing in that area, but I didn't find it to be a big issue.

Edit: 10 minutes again at Kolramas yielded 47 leather and 26 chitin. This is definitely my spot for this item.

Did some test runs on a 120 druid.

Spent 20 minutes farming Icemist Village in Dragonblight:
110 Borean Leather (solid pieces, no scraps, contrary to old comments below)
32 Chitin
56 Frostweave
1 Arctic Fur
1 green BOE

Cleared all the trash bugs in Ahn'kahet dungeon on Normal, up to the first boss:
28 Borean Leather
16 Chitin
20 Frostweave
3 green BOEs

Same dungeon on Heroic up to first boss:
34 Borean Leather
10 Chitin
22 Frostweave
1 green BOE
1 purple BOE

repeated runs of the dungeon alternating difficulties resulted in about the same numbers with normal dropping slightly more chitin and slightly less leather than heroic.

The Pit of Narjun, north of Star's Rest in Dragonblight is a decent area for farming Chitina di Nerubiano on higher levels. Clear the area above and around the instance portals as Signore delle Profondità di Anub'ar drops them frequently and repawns fast.

Then you can enter Heroic Ahn'kahet, il Regno Antico and clear the trash packs around Hall of Conquered Kings. Neither Ragno del Profondo nor Brulicatore di Ahn'kahar are skinnable, so skip those when possible.
An efficient route is to clear your way north from the start point, head to the right side of the circular water pit, and clear all the way North. There's a web bridge at the right side near the end which takes you over the gap to a pack on the other side.
- Back again, then go westwards through the building on left side, but DO NOT pull Anziano Nadox if you want to reset the instance!
- When leaving the building you head left and clear the terrace. (You would head right and downstairs to Befouled Terrace for going deeper into the dungeon, but there are nothing skinnable further in!)
- At the end of the terrace is stairs up to the room with the circular water fountain and fast way out for reset.

is a waste of time with only five skinnable mobs, three of them being the bosses!

Tried the suggested locations considering how most will be farming these nowadays. In the end for me, Kolramas in Zul'drak was the best choice.

Summary: Good density of skinning NPCs in an open, easily traversed site both with a good drop rate. Respawning at a good speed to prevent downtime. Ranged class with good movement speed (including consumable) means most NPCs are in range for the next kill. Compared to the other sites it gave me the most consistent results on a high level character.

Character: Level 52 Worgen (for the fast skinning perk) Hunter, Beast Master using Multi-shot (most are single kill so not so important). Apripista with a Cunning pet for Esplorazione and Aspetto della Bestia to help movement speed which is important when constantly running between, mainly, single kills spread out. That gives +42 Movement speed, together with cloak enchant and gems for total of 161% Movement speed. Really anything that helps reduce time getting to kill.

Ranged is essential especially when using consumable like Tartare d'Orso which is really so useful for this type of farming.

NPCs: There are two Undead NPC targets for skinning, the Metaragno Hath'ar and Necromago Hath'ar which are spread equally across the site. Both have a drop rate of 24% which is at the higher end of those that drop the chitin (my own recorded rate was 26% for both so pretty much in line with this site). The decent density of NPCs plus good drop rate is what makes this the better choice in my opinion. Also the site is open with only one building and few trees making traversing it easy which helps.

Route: Route was starting in the north corner then working clockwise around the rectangular area. Then, on returning to north corner, fly up to the back of the building as there are four additional NPCs fighting others to kill. Then flying up to the top of the building and work our way down (flying down after killing the two on higher floor, into the ground floor for last three). Then back to north corner and repeat. The flying part and building is mainly to allow proper respawn for the main circuit. If you farm slower then you can cut this out, so optional depending on kill speed.

To give some idea, on my current (medium) realm the total value (before tax) just for the skinned items is 12K gold.

Notes:

Nearest flight path (neutral) is The Argent Stand, Zul'Drak. Kolramas is located a short distance south-east from there on the border with Grizzly Hills.
With 90/90 Northrend Skinning skill, it was all leather and no scraps.
I use a Worgen for the racial perk which reduces skinning to the minimum. Otherwise use Corroborante di Lunacupa to really speed up the process. Not doing so really reduces the farmed total a lot over time.
Most NPCs are quickly within 40 yard range for kill and the Bear Tartare speed boost. Also there are plenty of Coscritto d'Argento Contagiato around to hit also which means the boost is up most of the time travelling.
Due to open nature of the flat site there is no need for flying between mobs except if respawns are no fast enough which they should be for the full route. Flying is handy for the north corner and building clear to get that good respawn timer balance if you work fast at higher level.
A small point but the mobs are webbing and raising the unfortunate dead Argent soldiers which over time emerge as scourged. Just a bit more interesting to watch as you slaughter them. Plus shooting down the Spargitore di Piaga is kind of fun too.

If you're hoping to collect all the appearances using Nerubian Chitin, you'll need a whopping ~360+ of the material. Its 42g each on my server (Moon Guard), which comes out to about 15k, for reference.
