This is the WotLK version of the Shadowsong Amethyst, the epic purple gem (Yes, it's epic and purple). Already in the game files, it will be officially introduced in patch 3.2.0, when it can be obtained in the following ways:

prospected from Titanium Ore;
created by an alchemical transmutation using 1 Twilight Opal and 1 Eternal Shadow;
bought for 10 Emblems of Heroism from Arcanist Ivrenne, Magistrix Lambriesse, or Harold Winston in Dalaran;
exchanged for 10,000 honor points from Captain O'Neal in Stormwind or Lady Palanseer in Orgrimmar.

Dreadstone can be cut in the following variations by a 450 Jewelcrafter (the respective designs can be bought from Timothy Jones for 5 Dalaran's Jewelcrafter's Tokens each):

Sovereign Dreadstone: +10 Strength and +15 Stamina;
Shifting Dreadstone: +10 Agility and +15 Stamina;
Tenuous Dreadstone: +10 Agility and +5 Mana every 5 seconds.
Glowing Dreadstone: +12 Spell Power and +15 Stamina;
Purified Dreadstone: +12 Spell Power and +10 Spirit;
Royal Dreadstone: +12 Spell Power and +5 Mana every 5 seconds;
Mysterious Dreadstone: +12 Spell Power and +13 Spell Penetration;
Balanced Dreadstone: +20 Attack Power and +15 Stamina;
Infused Dreadstone: +20 Attack Power and +5 Mana every 5 seconds;
Regal Dreadstone: +10 Dodge Rating and +15 Stamina;
Defender's Dreadstone: +10 Parry Rating and +15 Stamina;
Puissant Dreadstone: +10 Armor Penetration Rating and +15 Stamina;
Guardian's Dreadstone: +10 Expertise Rating and +15 Stamina.

Update (build 10048):

Epic gem transmutations now have a 20-hour cooldown.
Dreadstone now costs 10 Emblems of Heroism, down from 15.
Transmute: Dreadstone now requires 1 Twilight Opal and 1 Eternal Shadow instead of 3 Twilight Opals.

The following gems can be transmuted by an Alchemist without a cooldown. The link is to a blue post confirming what Alchemists on the PTR are experiencing. I have xmuted dozens in a row and the lack of CD is not a bug. So, expect the epic gems to come more into a reasonable line as far as prices go after a few weeks of the patch.

(6/30/09) Build 10048: The 20 hour CD has been placed on epic xmutes and significant changes have been made to the materials required. The information below has been updated as of the stated build.

(8/6/08) Live Patch 3.2.0: Changed the Eye of Zul requirements to reflect the state which the patch was taken live.

Just sold one of these for nearly 500 gold.

I was trolling the auction house for commonly used items with a currently low supply and found that none of these gems were listed. I used my emblems to purchase one and list it. I threw it up using auctioneer and apparently didn't pay attention to the valuation. This morning, while checking my auctions sold overnight, this was in my mailbox for just under 500. Not sure why auctioneer listed it for so much, as they a normally 100ish gold.

Anyways, keep an eye for a low supply on these gems, someone might be desperate and way overpay for one.
