This is a decent gem if you can find it cheap from a BT guild.

Just remember that as your haste increases, your mana per second goes up, as you increase your +damage your damage per mana goes up.

Both stats increase damage per second, just in different ways.

You should also remember that your own reaction time and a server lag does decrease the effect of haste rating, so with high ping or/and slow reactions you might still want to get pure damage instead.

Lag will reduce your dps pretty linearly no matter what you socket for, unless you're spamming 1.5sec casts (cos you can just whack the button on GCD).

eg. If you socket +spell damage the spell is still landing later than it would if you had haste, whether there is lag or not, so you are still losing damage because you have lost 0.1 seconds of time that you could have been using that +spell damage.

There are plenty of reasons that spell damage is better, and plenty of reasons that haste rating is better. To say that lag has anything to do with any of them is just wrong.

10 spell haste is roughly .1 seconds off a cast.

New Casting Time = Base Casting Time / (1 + (Spell Haste Rating/1570))

Icy Veins is about .5 seconds off a cast, so Icy Veins is roughly equal to 50 spell haste.

Given that most theorycrafters value spell haste as 1 spell damage = .90 spell haste, this gem is not better than runed crimson spinel. A simple conversion shows that the spinel is worth 10.8 spell haste, or that this gem converts to a total of 11.11 spell damage. This is a very small difference mind you, but it is a difference. You'll find a similar comparison to reckless pyrestones. This means, given a 2 socket item, putting in 2 runed spinels is approx. 1.78 spell damage more valuable than 2 of these.

If, however, your socket bonus is +2 spell damage or higher for 2 yellow sockets filled, then these become slightly better in that piece. However, reckless pyrestone is a better gem than these.

If you get 1, get more. Haste rating only works if you stack it.

Vendor price for this and all the other epic BC cut gems (Bold Crimson Spinel, Deadly Pyrestone, etc) has been reduced from 6g to 70s with patch 8.0.1
